[Q] Dual booting roms - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

Is it possible to dual boot ROMs on the Inc2?
Sent from my Incredible 2 using xda premium

Check out the boot manager link in my sig. Including the main phone rom, it allows you to have up to five.

This is really a question for the General or Q&A forums, but the answer is yes. There's an app on the market called Boot Manager which lets you set up and boot between 5 different roms - 4 on your SD card and one on the phone.
The good - it actually works.
The bad - it doesn't work.
At least that's been my experience with it. At one point, I had 3 different roms all working perfectly on it, now, I can't see to get anything to work. A little frustrating, but I'm still glad I bought the app - that it does work at all (if all the planets align) is pretty amazing, and I'm sure it'll get better over time.

In cases where it doesn't work, how easy is it to get back to using your phone? And how is the transfer of data? Do you use Titanium Backup?

If it fails, boot into recovery and flash the update.zip file from the boot managers phonerom folder. Visit www.init2winitapps.com for the complete users guide. It works well for me. I have four roms installed in mine.
Sent from my Incredible 2 using xda premium

I have 4 roms on the sd card. Takes time to set them up but once you are done, it works. For some odd reason though, I can't make it work with ext4, only accepts ext2 on the inc 2. Works fine with ext4 file system on the bolt I have. That's the only problem so far.

Moving to Q&A

I apologize for posting in the wrong forum. I bought Boot Manager and installed Virtuous Unity in sd card slot 1. Do I need to install a kernel separately or is it installed already? The install took some time and when it finished I hit "reboot into rom 1" and it told me there was no rom in slot 1. I am going to flash the update.zip file now.
edit: i've flashed the update.zip and tried an AOSP rom instead of sense and I get the same error.

can you mix sense and AOSP roms using this???

Convert your file system to ext 4 using 4EXT recovery. I have MIUI installed on phone as ext4 and works just fine for me

Boot Manager

I've been trying to get boot manager to work and so far no luck. Eerytime I install a rom it gets stuck at the ssplash screen. Sometimes it will freeze myy phone up when it's installing. The roms I been trying to install in the additional slots are Miui and pool party. It does ask something before install about either installing ext2 or ext4. Can someone explain what that is and how I can find out what my current rom ext is? I'm running SkyRaider1.1
Does it not say in the roms description? It usually does, a lot of the new roms are going to ext4, its basically just a different format for your SD card, ext4 is supposedly faster, I would try visiting skyraiders website to see, o, and I read that if the other roms you were trying to install to boot with this are ext4 roms, they will not work, this was only like 2 days ago I read that so unless they have fixed it since then that may be your problem also...

it doesnt matter the rom runs off the sdcard. the .img files it creates are each partition for the rom, it asks you what filesystem you want to use for those img files.

No I looked like 10x. Does not say what file extension it is on SkyRaider website. I talked to a dev. and he said the app isn't connecting to the servers and if I tried connecting using data not wifi which I have been and no luck. I'm just going to get a refund
I would listen to guy above me, he's pretty knowledge, but like I said, regardless of that issue, I red under comments on market, if the roms you are trying to use run ext4 they won't work for some reason, I don't know why, just what a lot of people said, it kept me from buying it cause I wanted to try it.

I love my boot manager. I always install as ext2 and don't have problem. I'm running CM7 beta as my main phone rom, with Magnolia, MIUI, Carbonite and GingerBangVanilla in the other slots. So much win.
Anyway you can always copy past the bootmanagers log.txt into an email and send it to [email protected] and they'll be more than happy to help.

Yeah I've already done that. They told me my app was connecting to servers to install necessary files in order for it to work properly. They told me to open the app using data while wifi disconnected which I always do anyways. I don't use wifi unless im downloading huge files. I told them i tried it and nothing seem to work, Haven't heard from them ever since. If i install as ext 2 it will install but when i want to select rom 1 it will get stuck at splash screen. If i install ext 4, it freezes my phone

Didn't find ext4. I see ext3 in some parts though. Weird.. If my rom is ext3 and it only gives me the option to install as ext 2 or 4. Look at my screen shot in OP to see what ik talking about.
I've been playing with boot manager and have found it a bit buggy as well. I was able to install Miui and stock GingerSense, but both Pool Party and OMFGB boot loop.
I'm not complaining though, I'm amazed it works at all considering what it's doing. I'll happily wait for it to be further refined, and I'm happy to support an app like this.
I think I may have found the problem. Correct me if i'm wrong. I'm running skyraider and the file system is ext3. I need ext4 installed on the main rom for boot manager to work? I tried converting it to ext4 but wouldn't boot so i converted it back to ext3 via EXT4 recovery

[Q] sd ext wont wipe or repair in recovery

Basically the problem I am seeing is when I try wiping sd ext in recovery (using ra-3.0.7gnm, a modified amon ra which has never given me problems since install months ago) I was getting an error that it could not be wiped and would be skipped. My next step was to repartition the sd card in recovery (8gb class 10 pny). That seemed to work but when I attempted to upgrade ext 2 to ext 3 it gave an error and would not let me. Currently I am using my computer to create the ext 3 partition but what could be causing the recovery to fail upgrading the partition? Any advice or recommendation or should I switch recovery? Tia.

Switching roms fast way?

Hi all I am currently using AOKP on my new GNex and am interested in trying out Miui.
What would be the fastest way to switch between the roms?
For example now I am on AOKP but if one day I feel like using Miui and then switch back to AOKP on another day without fully wiping everything and starting fresh on that particular rom again.
I want to be able to switch between the two roms while keeping each roms setup intact.
I know I may run into force closes so to avoid those type of errors what exactly would I have to wipe? Dalvik? Cache?
Thanks I advance.
Do a nandroid backup via CWM, then format system partition and install MIUI
Backup/Restore in recovery.
Never tried it, but there's also this:

Boot manager sounds interesting but if I read correctly it boots from sdcard right? Does that cause any type of performance issues?
I may have to read more about it to fully understand it.
Unless I'm mistaken, the Galaxy Nexus only has one storage device. Its just partitioned up.

there is a slightly performance hit on other phones that use SD cards (longer boot times most notably). Since the GN is just 1 storage set, there's no difference

It's one big partition.
Boot Manager, on my Nexus, sucks.
95% of the slot roms can't see the SD card. That means no syncing, no access to downloads from the main rom, and most importantly, no ability to reboot to the phone rom w/o going into recovery and flashing the update.zip first.
It's a big pain in the ass, and the Boot Manager devs don't care. There's been quite a few rants on different forums about this problem.
I purchased boot manager pro months ago ,then realised it doesn't work on galaxy nexus like it claimed an removed it not long after.CMW ect is the only reliable option for switching between roms.

Need help finding ROM for wfs marvelc that's stable

I've been looking for a ROM for this phone and I've used some of the best. Like cm9, wild child etc but every Rom has major issues like data or mms. So I just need a custom Rom that's stable.

I would try WildChild 3.3 DeOdex, i have been using it as a daily driver and have found very few problems. As for the mms if you use GoSms or even better GoChat i can send and receive anything. Backup and do all your wipes, now is not a bad time to partition your card, I have a 4gb card I partitioned in CWM I chose IM 1024, next 0M, now go to mounts and storage put the files on your SD card, flash the WC 3.3 deodexed, then flash the Virgin Mobile patch for HenseMod, yes even if your not Virgin Mobile, reboot and see if all works, mine did not the first couple times, it boot looped a couple times, I reflashed the ROM and Patch, for good measure I made sure to wipe again and it works like a charm. After that I rebooted back into recovery and ran the Data2SD script, it gave me 2.7gb on SD card and 915mb on Internal memory. I Benchmarked at 2069, so its pretty snappy.

How did you partition? And have you tried to go to CWM and under the advanced tab try to format everything and then try to partition again. If that don't work I would try and use a card reader and run some sort of disc utility and see if the card is corrupt.
I did it with cwm first then I was unsure about the mount so I mounted as disk drive and used mini partition wizard thingy. And just did it again. To be sure. But make sure you back up on cpu

[HOW-TO][GUIDE] So you want to install CM10 alpha on your Retail Droid Razr M? 11-16

SO YOU WANT TO INSTALL CYANOGENMOD?
SO! You might be new to Motorola, or Android, or Maybe even smartphones in general! I put together this Guide/Thread to help anyone new to the RAZR M with the installation and usage of Cyanogenmod on this phone!
First of all, i just want to say thanks to Hashcode, dhacker29, and any others who helped make this a reality on the Droid Razr M
NO ONE, OTHER THEN YOU, ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING YOUR PHONE INTO A PAPER-WEIGHT!! YOU ARE TO BLAME!
Before we flash, we must understand, there WILL be bugs at the beginning. most notably, Camera, WiFi and calls are a bit wonky so make sure this will work for you!
Requirements:
A rooted Droid RAZR M (either jellybean or ice cream sandwich, preferably jb ota)
The newest Safestrap.apk link (3.05.20 at the moment)
Rom of choice.
Now we have
CM10
CM10.1 Preview
AOKP alpha
The latest gapps for Jellybean Gapps
Steps for Installation:
0) Make sure you're rooted!!! This WILL NOT WORK UNLESS YOU'RE ROOTED!!!
1) Download ALL of the files above and put them in a place where you will remember, for me, i put them on the root of my SD Card.
2) Locate the Safestrap APK on the sd card using a file manager and install it.
3) Open the Safestrap application. You should get a popup from Superuser asking for permission. Allow it.
4) Next, hit the "Install Recovery" option and wait. This should only take a couple of seconds.
5) After safestrap is installed, power off the device. Once its off, power it back on. After the Motorola Splash screen, there should be a new, Safestrap screen. we're getting there!
6) On this safestrap screen, it should say "Safestrap Disabled" in red letters with the words "recovery" in the bottom left and "Continue" in the bottom right. Hit "Recovery"
7) Safestrap should boot up now. The screen will look like TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) to those that are familiar with twrp.
7.5) (OPTIONAL) Make a backup of your stock rom by pressing backup and sliding to backup.
8) Now, we must set up a Rom Slot. In the Safestrap menu, press "Boot Options" in the top left, which will have a blue outline.
9) Next, press ROM-Slot-1. System Partition and Cache Partition cannot be changed but the Data partition can. I recommend using 1 gb, unless you plan on installing a lot of apps.
10) This should take a while. After it is complete, the new Rom Slot is activated, meaning it will boot from that new slot from now on.
11) Press the home button to return back to the main screen. Now that we have a rom slot, we can install Cyanogenmod! From the main screen press "Install". It should launch and File Explorer-like UI with your SD Card already loaded. If it is on your SD Card, just scroll down until you see the rom and press it. Then slide to unlock.
12) After the rom installation is complete, we must install the Google apps (Gapps for short). When the installation is complete, hit the back button and find your Gapps package. install it like we installed Cyanogenmod. After the install, hit reboot system.
13) We are done! When you reboot, you should see the Motorola splash screen and then the safestrap screen, BUT, it will say "Safestrap Enabled" now and the picture will look different. Either wait the 10secs or press the "Continue" button on the bottom left. You should boot into Cyanogenmod
FAQ:
Q) Would you recommend installing the Cyanogenmod 10 Alpha?
A) Absolutely! Although it may not be a daily driver, its a good taste of what to come and VERY stable for a first release.
Q) Is it reversible?
A) Yes! 110%! If you want to go back to stock, but keep the CM10 on the rom slot, just go back into boot options, press the "Stock" option and hit activate. It should boot stock motorola android
Q) This is great! Who should I throw my money at?
A) Hashcode and dhacker29. They are awesome and TOTALLY deserve donations.
Q) This sucks! It made my phone come to live and eat my dog! Who do i blame?
A) Yourself. You take the responsibility for what you do to your phone. Not hashcode, dhacker or me.
If you run into errors, have questions, or any suggestions, don't be shy to post in here
Mods, I was unsure wether to post in General or Development, so if this is considered development, you can move it
Awesome guide. I have been playing with CM all day after it was released last night and loving it. However, I had trouble mounting my sdcard while attempting to install. I ended up using adb to push the zip to the new rom while in recovery and it worked like a charm. I am assuming that this might work for people without an sdcard at all. Perhaps this is worth noting? I am not quite sure, this is my first smartphone

Alright. This is definitely a good guide though! Keep up the good work.
The SD card is located as /external_SD/ in recovery, you can choose internal or external bubble but either way keep going up directories, until you get to the root, then locate the /external_SD folder
Also I suggest putting this link in op

So people can have the proper tools with which too root with or else safe strap and cm are pointless
And I have a thread in dev section with extra stuff and tips for making cm10 faster check it out maybe merge some of the links or info here?
