[Q] Moving on from the EVO 4g? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What is everyone looking at as an upgrade? or is there anything even worth considering currently?

Epic touch 4g, phone is straight beast

Nothing compelling to me. I am sticking where I am.

I'm cancelling Sprint at the end of this month. In a few months I'll probably buy a Sprint Samsung Gravity S2 from ebay, root it, and port it to Boost mobile.

I'm not upgrading until HTC releases a phone with ics and lte.

Got a photon and epic touch to play with, probably gonna keep the epic touch though and sell the photon. I love my EVO but I feel like its limits have almost been pushed to the max when it comes to sense roms. 3.0 is nice, but lag and lack of RAM are a major downer. Haven't had a chance to try 3.5, and I probably won't unless they somehow get 4g

I'm still waiting for something perfect to come along to make me give up on my Evo. There are features from the 3VO, Photon, and the ET4G that I wish I could combine into a super phone. Evo ain't broke, so don't fix it or get locked into another contract yet. Upcoming Prime is very intriguing (even though we don't really know much yet or even if it will be on Sprint at launch).

From some of the threads I've read the prime will be exclusive to Verizon, at least for a little while
Edit: looks like Sprint may be getting it afterall.

Sticking where I am for now, next year there will be a phone that is better than the
Samsung and Photon.

I actually switched to an Epic 4g touch for a week...absolutely loved the display and speed, but there were so many little problems I ended up taking it back and going back to the Evo... Main problems were bluetooth issues (with my car), wifi not connecting/staying connected to my router, and occasionally disconnecting from the cell network (requiring a restart of the phone). In addition, the signal strength seemed to be nowhere near as good on either wifi or the cell network vs the Evo. Maybe after a software update or two it will be worth the switch, but for now, I'm back on my old reliable Evo...it "just works".

That's the problem, even if you buy the latest and greatest, as soon as you get it there is a bigger and better phone out.

Who is or isn't returning their EVO?

I'm reading a lot of complaints about the EVO. But how many of you are returning it before the month is up.
As for me I had the HTC Mogul then the HTC Touch Pro2. Still love my Touch Pro2 but i'm going to sell it.
The EVO is the first android i ever had, the best phone i ever had. I'm keeping mine.
Sent from my HTC EVO 4G using XDA App at 3:36am. Sorry for the miss spelled word
I plan on keeping mine, after I get a good unit lol
I am keeping mine too. I love my rooted EVO specially using the tether app
I'm probably gonna replace mine.
Screen separation and a stuck pixel.
Return? Never unless the 30fps issues arent resolved.
I'm loving it. I'm unrooted and still love it. I don't plan on rooting until theirs a much easier, less involved rooting method. Also depends on when FroYo is expected to come out. I'm patient.
being rooted im sure every issue that is out is going to be resolved with the devs we have at xda minus the screen seperation which im not one of the unlucky ones.. im loving this phone, before having this phone the one thing i wasnt too fond of was the size of this badboy after actually playing with it now the size is one of my favorite things about it.. never thought id be one to have such a huge phone but when im messing with my wife hero im like "no way, too small for me" to think i used to think she had a big phone.. funny how things change, but im hanging on to this and am actually getting my wife one as well... luvinit
I love my EVO but I am a little salty that we got 440MB of internal memory and the droid X has 8 GBs. There's no way I am paying Verizon's prices.
I am keeping my EVO 4G being that the only competition is the DroidX and well...I get verizon's network without Verizon's prices on my EVO.

I still don't get how HTC thinks supplying such paltry amounts in a flagship product paired with 2.1 is a wonderful fit. They also supplied the EVO with a 16-bit screen so cost criteria is always at play..
I wonder how HTC-OEMs will step up their game now that the iPhone 4 is out but I think just bringing 2.2 will help a lot in the interim.
No way! This phone has been amazing so far, no issues whatsoever
I'm actually thinking about returning mine for the X. The big choice was between sprint and vzw and vzw only seems about $10 more per month for a much nicer phone.
"Their" not "There"
sorry had to fix that.
and no i'm not returning my evo, I would if sprint was coming out with a better phone but since the droidx isn't sprint no thanks.
I'm keeping my evo, because something new and faster always comes along, except with sprint, I can upgrade every year vs every 2 with verizon. Have fun with your droid x when I have my evo 2 in hand next year
I'm considering it. Both the Droid X and the Epic 4g are looking better in some areas that matter to me. The big thing that may keep me with the Evo is the user community that HTC has. I understand that the Motorola and Samsung dev group is growing but it is nowhere near as big as XDA. And since I like tweaking and improving stuff, that's important to me.
edit: Oh, and please edit the title. The "there" instead of "their" is driving me crazy. If this was an international phone, I would excuse it, but it's not. We're all Americans here and we all should know the difference between those two words.
I love the EVO!! I do have the screen seperation issue, but on a list for a new one at the shack that they say I should have this weekend. Other then that I couldnt see my self using anything else!!!

actually, I'm told that verizon is 12 month upgrades on plans over $45/month? something like that? Can anyone verify?

posting this again since no one has seen it evidently, but:
I called VZW and on any voice plan $59 or more/month, you get 12 month phone upgrades. So this is no longer a selling point in sprint's favor (there are others anyway, but this was the big one for me).
I'm almost 100% sure I'm taking my evo back this weekend.
I'm keeping mine. It's been working great!

Should I get the Epic 4g Touch?

Ok so I currently have the nexus s 4g, i am due for an upgrade. I was just curious whether you guys think i should upgrade to the epic 4g touch, or wait for a better phone down the line (galaxy nexus). These are my thoughts:
The epic 4g touch, in many ways IMO, is the best phone out on the market now. I have played around with it in the sprint stores and love it. But I have a few questions...I have read that the Epic touch has NFC technology, is this true? Also are there a lot of nice ROMs for it, i have searched the dev section but really theres no way to tell the quality of ROM by just looking at the pictures and posts. Also do you guys think i should save my upgrade for something thats coming down the line? I have googled searched as much as possible to see if there are any new sprint phones coming down the line and i cant seem to find anything that beats out the epic touch, besides the galaxy nexus which is not even confirmed for sprint yet, and no announcment of a WiMax version so im thinking if sprint even gets it it wont be until they get there LTE network up which will be for a while. Gimme Your thoughts...thanks in advance.
Be patient and wait for the Galaxy Nexus. wait for the news about it, see if they are going to release one for Sprint... if not get the Epic Touch 4g.
No NFC for the epic touch 4g. also, not many roms. development is slow but it will take off with a little more time.
I'd wait for the Galaxy Nexus.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
First things first, there's always going to be a newer bigger and better phone coming down the line no matter what phone you buy. Even if you buy a phone on launch day there's always something new in the works. That's technology, its constantly evolving. And don't go chasing fairy tales of a Nexus that isn't even announced to be coming to Sprint. Even if it was it would be an LTE device and that's a long time from now.
As for lack of custom Roms the epic touch hasn't been out all that long so there's only a few custom Roms out. But truthfully there's not much that needs changing or modifying to make this phone awesome. Straight out of the box you won't find much to complain about if anything at all. I was asking myself the same questions and I come to the conclusion that the epic touch is definetely worthy of an upgrade and even worthy of keeping for twenty months. Sprint. LTE. is a ways off so by the time that starts rolling out in a timely fashion, you'll be nearing your next upgrade anyway. Go buy the epic touch and give it a try for a few days. I promise you will not want to return it and go back to your current phone. Trust me on that.
The Galaxy Nexus probably won't come for quite a while so if you're anxious for a new device and don't want to leave Sprint, then the Epic Touch will be great. There are some issues such as loss of signal and no NFC included as stated earlier. I came from the original epic and I upgraded to this one since the next Nexus seemed like it would take a while to get to Sprint.
I was in your situation and decided to go ahead and get the Epic 4G Touch. I haven't had any problems with it at all so far and love the phone. There's lots of development going on for it too if you're into custom ROMs. The Nexus Prime will probably be great, but who knows when we'll see it. Like others have said, there's always going to be something newer on the horizon.
Get it its a beast by th time you think about it. Newer phones will be out just enjoy the now

I made the jump from the Evo to E4GT and I couldn't be happier.
If you keep waiting for the next best thing, you will never get anything. No one even knows for sure if Sprint is getting the GN
anyway.

Hi I own one and though the phone is great, the Samsung support is non existent. Also with Samsung you have to buy new phone to get the upgrade to the OS. I am waiting for HTC to announce their next sprint phone like Vigor. My experience with HTC has been much better...The only way Samsung with unlearn what they learnt from Apple is to let their sales get affected. I am telling this to everyone who goes ooh aah over my phone.
If you are planning to stay with Sprint and not looking to switch carriers, I would say buy it and enjoy it.

I think the phone is great, despite having left mine for ohhh say 30 mins in a steamy bathroom. No water damage signs inside sprint told me (I didnt tell them what happened obviously) but two weeks later after tons of complaining I got a new one and I am happy as a pig in poo. This "smartphone" maybe because it is my first one, but I can't imagine being without it.
When I purchased it was a couple days after I found out that sprint was getting the iphone, and after about two weeks of hard research (it was released in US MID september to the best of my knowledge) so I am looking forward to spending two years with it now. The two weeks (really 10 days because I rigged it up to work and got extra battery that I had sprint credit to my account.
The old phone already had drop marks and stuff, the new one go a TPU treatment right away and steinheil sgp screen protector 24 hours later. This, IMO is the perfect trio. Size of the iphone IMO is better, thats it. The screen on this thing will wow you with pretty much all you look at, it is fast, every iphone person that sees it LOVES it (ICouldGAF after reading jobs bio - ****), precesses fast, battery is nice, feel nice, fit finish nice. I dont want a metal phone, even though when I dropped it a few times, the edges that were worn looked a heck of alot like some sort of metal and it bent like metal in places, I also read it is somewhere (of course cant find link but maybe somewhere on Samsung site proper)
JC
I would get it. I doubt the galaxy nexus is coming to sprint. This is the best phone out for Sprint and will be for a long time.
Sent From My Evo Killer!!!
I would defintely get it, i came from AT&T's Motorola Atrix(the first one) and it was a great device and still is, had it since launch, but i been wanting a Galaxy S phone. So i decided to go into the sprint store and check out the E4gT, and loved it, the phones that i was tryna decided between were the E4gT and the Evo3d, i didn't want the photon cause i don't really like motorla, and the iphone 4s was too high, plus i really don't like iOS(i love mod'n my devices and u really can't do much with iOS), and the Galaxy Nexus is WAAAAAYYYY OVERRATED, sure it's gonna come with ICS but nobody's gonna keep it stock for long, they'll end up throwing a rom over it, and the devs on the E4gT are active and will keep you happy with enough roms(and updates with them), mods, and themes until ICS comes to the E4gT
But back to the topic at hand, i definitely suggest this phone, buy it, give it a few days before u decide to root it to test it out, stay up to date with the forum and if u decide to root, the instructions are super easy and you'll have plenty of help if u get stuck(eventhough some may give u a hard time) but i'll definitely help u if needed just like i was helped.....now GO FOR IT! lol
Its aight. Once the LOS is fixed (hopefully) it'll be the a great phone to hang on to.
......
when its 100% it is an awesome phone and there isnt one out that Id want more, but because of the bugs me and the wife both slightly wish we waited longer to pick these up or got different phones without the bugs this phone has...
Id say wait for samsung to send out the update to fix the phone, then get it.
I have 3 Sprint phones in my possession right now. This one, the EVO 3D, and the Nexus S 4G. They are all great phones & each has some sort if advantage over the other. The Nexus S, will surely get ICS shortly after the Galaxy Nexus comes out. It is a great little phone. The EVO 3D is a nice phone & with the CM7 alpha on it, it's every bit as fast as the E4GT. HTC has already announced they well be updating it to ICS. The E4GT has a beautiful screen & is fast as hell. It's simple to use, root & also easy to fix if you mess something up from flashing. I would go to the Sprint store & play with these 3 devices & decide for yourself. I don't think Sprint well get the Galaxy Nexus until mid next year. Samsung has not mentioned one that ics is coming to this phone. The others have already said they'll get it.

Sprint has alot more to worry about than making the nexus a priority as their next samsung smartphone offering. They have their hands full with backorders of Epic 4g touches all over. I have been on the phone for a week, try getting one in a rapid fashion when yours malfunctions day 15 - one day after the 14 day trial ends - Jump through hoops. Been a customer since 1997 here....
As far as ICS, I wont hold my breath, what were working with seems well enough, no?

[Q] Upgrade Question

I am on Sprint and love my rooted EVO, I am due to upgrade now and I am wondering what Android phone would be good to get if I replaced my EVO. I really want something that I can root and have the flexibility like my EVO. Is there something out there?
thanks for any insight you have.
Wait till Wednesday because Sprint and HTC are holding a press conference to announce probably a new phone.
Im in the same boat. iv had the evo since day 1 and my upgrade is due very soon. Im going to wait until next wait to hear about the new phones sprint has to offer at the press conference. As much as i want to upgrade I also do not want to! I love my evo and i love the support base it has on XDA with roms and tweaks! I feel like no other phone will have the support the evo has!

Hey,
I would wait because htc has the best phones, but remember sprint will be rolling out with more lte phones they might be worth waiting for since we are paying for premium data, just a thought
In a similiar situation myself. My upgrade became eligible 4/1. I am waiting till wend. But my concern is ...I have great 4g where I am and am concerned with upgrading to lte and being stuck on 3g for a year or more. The Cleveland area is in the third launch group.
To the op the epic touch seems great, I just added my daughter to my plan ( she got a free evo 3d great deal and great phone) and I got to play with it. The screen is amazing and very responsive. It also has great reviews. The only drawback is the forum for it here. I have been stalking it lately and it does not seem near as nice or active as the evo. 4g 's if I am wrong please correct me.

Hey,
I mean the development community is alright for the evo3d and it is a great phone, but the evo is one of the biggest hits and has a HUGE amount of support on the xda forums and we are truly blessed with that and it really isnt something you wont find on any other phone
i would definitely wait to see what the happens with the rumors of the htc evo one
if you're following development for your next phone, i'd say stick to the EVO series.
The Galaxy line heavily favors GSM (since its natively GSM) so development for CDMA galaxy phones are the tricklings from their GSM brothers and because of that ppl get more restless, constantly expecting more from their devs as they hear about what comes out for the GSM variant (i lived it - it WILL get to you, i had the S2 since launch), but no hate intended, the development has gotten up to speed recently and the devs that have stuck around are beasts, but the S2 forum had lost a lot of support/respect from devs bc of the overly anxious community.
The EVO line is basically reserved for CDMA/Sprint. i had the E3D at launch and now my bros E4G and the development/devs/community for each had better vibes. Development seemed to come naturally and more comfortably because there wasn't a GSM variant pushing the devs because "the same phone is getting more development". Ppl are more humane, so Devs stay happy. Devs stay, so we stay happy. From the way it looks, especially with most ppls upgrades coming up, the EVO One X, or whatever, is going to be the direct successor of this phone. so you can expect a lot of the development/devs/community to translate when it drops - of course, not to the same magnitude because its not so much of a game-changer as the Evo 4G was initially, but it will definitely get a lot of attention
I was obviously contrasting GNex + GSIII vs Evo One X but you could always wait a while to see the impacts of each phone and then decide. i'm probably pretty biased bc I cant wait for the EoX to drop but as long as there are CDMA and GSM variants of the same phone, one side is always getting the shorter straw

I wouldn't go for an EVO 3d for an upgrade.. its a nice phone but would be boring due to the sense 3.0 roms for the evo and 6 months after your upgrade you would want a newer one due to the 3d being.considered old now and the EVO 4G is so outdated sprint no longer sells it
I only mentioned the e3d because my daughter got 1 free I was looking at the s2. I really wanted the new evo one coming out but it being lte, I will lose my 4g till about late 2013 or about the time of my next upcoming upgrade. So if I want to keep wimax what is the best phone?

Question for EVO owners

Honestly the evo is a great phone but if i had a Nexus S 4g i wouldnt trade it for a evo. The nexus s 4g development is booming right now with ICS roms that are fully working. Also i believe the NS4G is better hardware wise as well
I've had my evo for close to 2 years now, and I still love it thanks to the awesome rom developers on this site. I'm not sure I would trade down for it if you have a newer, faster device, though.
Had my phone for 2 years. Would probably trade it for something else had it not been for the Deck Rom that I found on this forum. Phone still is very competitive with the rest of the models out there so for me unless i find a model that outperforms my phone by miles i'll stick to Evo. Plus with the new rom Deck Reloaded its better than ever (minus few minor things that need to be ironed out, rom was just released 2 days ago).

I've passed on "upgrading" from my Evo for 14 months, because nothing else was a good enough excuse to give it up. Still the overall best phone I've ever had, so far! I'm still keeping mine to play and hack around on long after my Evo 4G LTE is in my hands.
That's my plan too is to keep to OG Evo to use as a wifi device around the house when I want to listen podcasts and such that the wife doesn't want to hear. On that same note, can't wait for the LTE to drop.
I've had mine since the launch and I still love it. I also tend to stay with a given phone for long hauls; I had my Sony Erickson w810i for almost 4 years (I replaced it with the Evo).
I've had mine for almost 2 yrs. It's the best phone I've had simply for the modification factor. I like to tinker and try new things (ROMs, kernels, themes, etc.) w/o the lockdown hurdle I had with my iPhone. I wouldn't trade down for older tech though. I would think you could get one pretty cheap and not have to give up the newer phone you have.

Thinking of getting rid of my S2 and getting S3 wanted to find out how is the 3G service on S3 in the NY/NJ area . S2 I get Wimax which is ok . I had gps issues with my S2 but got solved after Sprint replaced it .
Any issues with S3 I need to be aware off.

Data connectivity/signal is a very one sided thing. It's 99% tower.
Meaning... no matter what phone you have, you'll likely get the same speeds using the same protocols. With that in mind, you'll not get WiMax of course, so you won't get that speed.
But at least on the S3, you'll be on the LTE technology, which is being actively deployed all over the country, and off of the WiMax, which is no longer being implemented or improved upon, and will be decommissioned in the next couple of years.
But honestly at this point, I would just wait till May to see what they come out with.
The S3 is great and all, but you're at a turning point where if you wait just a little longer, it will be better I think.
Since you're already on the S2 and WiMax is available in your area and LTE isn't, there's no reason to move to another device really...
I cannt wait and sold my phone already . Need a new phone so either s3 or evo lte

I came from an Evo lte. I kinda regret switching to an s3 but don't. Only reason I switched was because of the speaker and call quality is horrible. The rest on the Evo I loved but the call quality made me switch.
So s3 has much better call quality then evo lte

Idk if it was my Evo but call quality was horrible on it and speaker was no where near as the gs3. That's the reason I got the s3. Good speaker. Good call quality.

"Thinking about selling" and "sold" are two different things, tell us what REALLY happened or is happening and you'll get a better response.
Now, as to recommendation... This is ALL personal preference... With that... From a flat out "looks" standpoint... I personally dislike the weird color design they've done with the HTC EVO 4G LTE, Samsung's much more sleek and I personally like my device to not stand out like a sore thumb. Samsung's nailed that I think.
Now, from a usability standpoint, I've not had very much time to play around with the 4G LTE, but when I did, it felt very similar to my old 3D, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I personally dislike Sense. There are a few things I like about it, but in the grand scheme I always ended up using a different launcher.
The next point is freedom... HTC locks down their device pretty heavily. So, if you're going to root/unlock it, HTC's got some safeguards in place to prevent that and also a way to track that you have unlocked it. (They are all bypassable, but just more difficult to unlock...) Samsung doesn't lock theirs down as heavily. So that's a huge plus for me as well as many others, because from day one, it's unlocked, rooted, freed from restrictions.
So, if you don't root at all... and you are also content with HTC Sense, then you can go with the 4G LTE, but I've also heard many people that have returned their 4G LTE for an S3, for other issues, such as LTE not working unless you reboot the data services...
Samsung's also a little quicker on the updates for their devices and also don't End Of Life one of their flagship devices inside of a year. (EVO 3D is a great example of that...)
Personally I would recommend the S3, but it's of course all personal preference.
