Hey i know this is out of topic but i was wondering what you guys think
I have a toshiba netbook with windows 7 starter and i really hate because it us freaking slow and it lacks in features compared to ultimate
So what I was wondering is that if its a good idea to switch to ultimate
Will it affect the battery ?

oh wow u cant be more wrong about where to post this lol

but to answer ur question dont do it, ultimate needs more memory , and cause ur computer is already slow the processor will stay up longer trying to calculate stuff so more battery is wasted... consider going down to XP or switch to ubunto or other linux dist.

I have to disagree with the majority of posts on this thread. I scrapped Windows Starter about a week after getting my netbook in favor of Ultimate. Performance is greatly increased and the battery life has also improved. That said....Linux will always run better as it uses less resources "out of the box".

I run both Win 7 Ultimate and Ubuntu on my Acer D150 with only 1GB of memory. I don't use Ubuntu that much, but run Office 2010 regularly, browser, etc without any problems. I mainly use it when onsite to test things.
If Ubuntu (or any other distro) fits your needs, I don't see why to spend the money on Win 7. Just my 2 cents.
I got a free version of ultimate 7

Yea install the drivers. First of all, the sole difference between Ultimate and Starter, apart from aero are some features that a "normal" user will never ever use. The same goes for XP Home and XP Pro.
If i were you i'd install Windows xp. Ubuntu on my hp mini is retarded. I cant watch a single video on youtube without it going down to 5fps on the damn flash video.
But if you wanna use windows, and not XP, i'd reccomend you downloaded Windows 7 Thin PC. You will have to format every 6 months, but you get a really fast version of windows 7.
I'm going to try out ubuntu because its free and ill see if I nake the total change
Stewie just said that!
Chances are you aren't going to like Unity on 11.04, so I would install 10.04 LTS if I were you.
I have an hp mini 1000 and have been trying different linux distrobutions. I have settled with crunchbang debian. It is super light weight and lightening fast!

Windows battery management is way much better than ubuntu. My laptop battery lasts for 3-4 hours with windows however it reduces to 1-2 hours with ubuntu with normal usage.
So if you are looking for battery life, windows is way much better than Ubuntu.

win 7 starter and win 7 ultimate are the same operation system in means of it's core levels. therefore it's very likely the ultimate will perform the same as the starter edtion. however, as far as i know starter does not have aero and that's the point where ultimate might feel little bit snappier, while the cpu does not have to bother rendering ui. it's very easy to prove on any win 7 computer by turning the aero on and off ...
btw, your forum selection for this question is golden D
Hey man thanks for the tips but my decison was to sell the netbook and im buying a xoom in a couple of weeks!

Hello all,
Since there are so many flavours of ROMs around, I decided to do a little test with some of them (in my opinion, the more popular ones).
For the test I used the following ROMs:
2.1 Eclair
BeHero 1.3.2
Legendary 1.3.5
aHero 0.6.1
aHero 0.7.1
aHero 0.8
Villain 4.0 beta 2
Villain 5.02
Villain 5.1
Villain 5.2
Villain 5.3
Villain 5.4
CyanogenMod for Hero 1.0
Defiance 2.1
Androbin 1.1110
Legendroid 1.0.1
NeoRom 2.1
Raidroid 1.1
SlideVillain 1.0.1 beta
VanillaEclair 1.3 NAS
---
1.5 Cupcake
Kimera 1.7 @ 768MHz
Also the following for benchmarking:
For 3D Performance
Qualcomm's "NeoCore" 1.9.18 - Measured in FPS
For 2D Performance
Softweg's "Benchmark" 1.03 - Measured by an internal score
For CPU Performance
Linpack for Android - Measured in MFLOPS
All the tests mean: The higher, the better.
The method of testing was the usual flashing, a couple of reboots to make sure every caching necessary was done and the average of 3 benchmark of each test.
----
Here are the results from this first batch of ROM's:

Also remember that this tests are solely to measure the 2D/3D performance of a ROM, what in no way can be used to measure if a ROM is better or worse then another. It's only for games and overall "snappiness".
Bye
Hey. Thanks for the comparisons. This is very useful.
I have always said that BeHero was the best 2.1 ROM. It is very quick.
Villian was always the slowest for me but had more 'fixes' and features (just as google voice search).
I am currently running Legendary 1.3.5 (the 'upgrade' to BeHero...), which is as good as its predecessor.

According to the post you replied to, it is not as good as its predecessor when it comes to OpenGL performance - I would say it comes at an overall third place in that list.
That said, I wonder whether this should be taken as a measure for performance of a ROM.
Does OpenGL affect performance of the entire device? Or just, as I suspect, those processes which can make use of it - some games perhaps?

Hi. Yeah I did read the post I replied to and saw that Legendary came 3rd. But in fact, well in my opinion it is a better performer than its predecessor contrary to the benchmark statistics above.
To me, it feels snappier. Though the stats. say differently.
Just like a car might feel faster than the car you previously drove, but in fact it is not... if that makes sense lol...

Hello,
I'm doing this tests for my own pleasure since I like measuring performance and I saw a good opportunity here and for the moment I have some spare time
Anyway, this tests compare the 2D/3D performance across the different ROMs available for the users in this forums. For some people this might be important, like for me, since I have quite a few games in my Hero. Also it's important for people that cannot stand "lagginess" or "sluggishness" (I don't have a clue how to spell that...) in your home screen and/or browsing the ROM
Added Androbin 1.1110 & Defiance 2.1
Villain 3.4
NeoCore (with sound): 24.6
NeoCore (without sound): 29.9
Softweg (GPU test): 120
Favour
Could you do me a favour and chuck in a 1.5 ROM just for a sense of comparison, such as mr.bang performance rom. Just want to see how much of a 'gain' we get in terms of visuals from the switch to 2.1 if any at all, thanks
You should add Kagu Droid with JIT to the test.

Hi,
I'm trying to add the most number of ROMs possible and about the cupcake version, it's not possible since NeoCore doesn't run
But yes, I would love to check the performance between them.
Re: [Benchmark] 3D/OpenGL performance across ROMs
Ahh thats a shame. In that case could legendroid be uploaded please, i can a few tests and i think it could beat behero!

Are you sure OpenGL is used outside of apps/games specifically written to make use of it?
I figured sense the Evo is similar to the HD2 and the HD7 and they run windows 7 is it possible to make a rom that will port windows 7 OS to the Evo...Just a thought, I really like the OS and I want to at lest try it...BTW there not going to be a W7 phone on sprint for some time...What do you guys think?

First, before you get hammered, this question belongs in Q&A, not the development section.
It sounds interesting and would be cool to see it happen but I don't think it would be easy. Each driver would have to be ported to the phone and such.
Possible but unlikely but who knows? There as some amazing devs out there.

Why do you feel this question belongs in this forum? And like ricsim said, possible but unlikely. Take a lot of work to do such a thing, and the devs seem pretty busy lately, trying to port something like that would post pone their current work.

This might not be too bad of an idea. Have any of you nay-sayers actually used a WP7 device? I would bet no. It's not a phone that could replace my EVO, but the interface is kinda cool. It would be neat to dual boot WP7 - just because. It saves you from having to buy an expensive WP7 to use it infrequently. I think it's a cool idea, but I don't think there is support for it.
I would also love to see this idea come around, more as another ROM for our phones than anything else, just because I would like to try the interface and I like the idea of having Xbox LIVE on my phone, as well as having a choice of OS's, like Sense and AOSP. Maybe someone out there would like to contribute some time to this?
Windows 7, no. The NT kernel is x86/x64.
Windows Phone 7, technically it meets the requirements, but that's what the HD7 and other WP7 phones are for.
Windows Phone 7, of course. The title of this thread is a little off (Sorry OP). And yes, while we could all certainly go buy Windows Phone 7 devices, why would we do so if our EVOs that we already have are more than capable of handling it?
In terms of specs, the Evo meets the requirement. But there is no other way right now to flash a different OS on the Evo like there was in the case of the HD2 booting Android. There is a tablet coming out or is already out that can dual boot Android and WindowsCE6. So we might be able to find something from that if anything comes out of it. But it wouldn't do any good right now even if WP7 was running on the Evo, you need the genuine Windows phone services, which the HD2 doesn't have since it's not a certified Windows 7 phone.
You can flash Ubuntu to the EVO, I would define that as a different OS.
Ubuntu is also a unix based linux OS like Android. Windows 7 Phone isn't. You're not really flashing Ubuntu on there either, you're really just loading it onto the SD card like you would for Android on the HD2. There were and are tools available for WinMo 6.5 to boot linux on that device and other WinMo devices, but nothing like that for Android devices to boot up CE kernels and OS.
Simple answer:
Not going to happen.
Why?
Android is open. The devs can modify the source to tailor it to a device. Windows Mobile and iOS are not.[/thread]
There won't ever be a worthwhile WP7 port unless you can remove the stick from M$'s butt, because as Team DFT put it "Microsoft's Genuine Software check will basically disable all cloud based services like Zune, Marketplace and Xbox Live if the system can't pull a valid key from the handset's motherboard."
Which means, if your device wasn't pre-loaded with WP7, WP7 won't work on your device. Now they have ported it to other phones, and run it, calls, ect. They just can't access the materials that make WP7 what it is.
So you will need to expect to buy and install a mod chip in your Evo to trick a future WP7 port into thinking your phone is a WP7 phone, or you will need to accept the fact that no phone other than a WP7 phone will be able to fully utilize the software.

Android uses Linux for the kernels, the rest is something else I believe. This thread is talking about full Linux.
As good as this sounds, and/or Ubuntu or open WebOS, it's not all about the OS.
If other handset manu's don't "buy into the idea", then you have a single company with limited apps and limited support and no real infrastructure.
Apps are a huge deciding point when it comes to what people buy.
Phone A with android and a million apps? (apps = designed specifically for phone)
Phone B with ios and a million apps?
Phone C with ubuntu and 100 apps?
Phone D with tizen and 100 apps?
Phone E with Win Phone 8 and 20k apps?
Without the infrastructure and apps people won't come to it. Without people, developers have no desire to create apps and infrastructure. Catch 22.

Linux is the kernel. That's it. There is no "full Linux" as you put it. What you may be thinking of is GNU/Linux, which is the Linux kernel with the GNU userspace overlaid on top of it. That's what almost all Linux-based desktop operating systems (like Ubuntu, Debian, Mint, Slackware, Arch, etc.) use.

Yeah I was referring to the way Linux is on desktops, sorry about that. Thanks for correcting me.
The more options, the better. A duopoly isn't ideal for the consumer. Android is great and all, but more choices never hurt.
With 4gb ram and relatively powerfu intel lZ3580 64bit processor it looks like Asus zenfone can run windows 8.1
Anyone knows how to do that?
There are other threads discussing this, but theoretically we should be able to. I prefer going the chroot/wine route but the processor dies support vmx, so we could try chroot/qemu-kvm for full pc emulation.

Just because it has an intel processor doesnt' mean it can run windows. BIOS isn't same, doubt that 8.1 has the proper graphics driver, boot process isn't styled like a PC, etc. In short, I wouldn't hold your breath.

MrCpu You are right, it pob has a better chance running Ubuntu. Man it would fly too.
Why doesn't ubuntu go mobile .?.
Please dont be too harsh in reply, I dont know why but it just flashed in my head as lightning fast on a device like this.
If you are rooted, you can install chroot apps from the play store like linux deploy & XServer-XSDL is a really good Android X server, so you can install an Ubuntu distro really easily.

long live linux mint ^^
It would an interesting novelty to see a desktop Linux distro or Windows 8.1 running natively on the Zenfone, but would be of no actual use. Windows is just about OK on an 8" tablet, but even that is a bit cramped. I've had windows running on my ASUS memo pad 7 (not really running on it, but using the display via Splashtop) and that was too small. On 5.5" screen it would be unusable.
I did some thought experiments on this and then i promptly decided to do a real experiment and after many tries and different methods i got the state below. so i would say its very hard and dangerous and requires you to know the grub command line but its not impossible.

This is an Acer Iconia One 7 B1-750 Tablet. It uses InsydeH2O UEFI Bios.
P.S Bootloader is locked. USB OTG Keyboard and mouse got disconnected when the setup booted up and digitizer also didn't work but baby steps right?
