Prls and 3g roaming - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Any prl that allows normal sprint operation but allows 3g roaming in California?
Samsung Galaxy S Dos indeed

I was using 11115 on my OG Epic. Just flashed it on my Epic Touch.
The prl can be found here
Instructions can be found: here
If this helps ya out, please click the "Thanks" button.

Are you located in California
Samsung Galaxy S Dos indeed

No. There are some areas where you just cannt 3g roam. I saw a explanation once as to why, but I forget. I did use that prl when I drove across the country and back (5300 miles!) a couple of weeks ago. I was forced roaming almost all of the time. I got 3g about half of it. Almost always in citys though.

I have also -101 dBm 35 asu (what is "asu" i see it and think of the college in Phoenix, AZ.. ) on 4G where as my dad's samsung stratosphere in the same room has -79dBm.

ASU stands for Active Set Updates...it's a number that indicates the rate your device can update it's location to nearby towers.
i went from -78dBm up to -105dBm...with an asu of 35.
Is anyone aware of a way to manually change the PRL on the gnexus LTE?
reason I ask... many users are old legacy alltel users and for some reason Verizon leaves us on a different PRL that sucks compared to the full verizon one even though we're verizon customers..
I did a *22899 before I knew that you weren't supposed to do that with 4g devices, nobody at verizon felt the need to tell me I guess.
So I'm on prl 52642 and was on a 15xxx before that. Not really sure what to do here.. I still have 4g and it doesn't seem like signal was degraded at all, but it is definitely not updating automatically.
Mine had a PRL of 14008 or 14009 (I can't remember which). I am in an Alltel/VZW area. I got basically no signal for voice & data (-120dBm virtually the whole time until I got within a couple of miles of the tower). I unfortunately returned it - it is too expensive to just be a paperweight.

Mine actually doesn't allow me to dial *228 numbers (although it dialed *22899 by itself yesterday around 6 AM), and I'm on PRL 52642 as well.

Mine did that too, in a place where I had zero signal, which did a nice number on my battery.
I'm 15098 here in Philly. You might be able to 'reset' it by removing the SIM (power off!), rebooting, then putting the SIM back and rebooting, other posts seem to indicate that works.

[Q] How do I know I'm on 4G?

I'm in Chicago (both in the city and suburbs), and my S3 always shows "3G" in the notification area.
I know AT&T has an LTE network here, so shouldn't it say 4G or LTE? Could this be a problem with my account--or even the phone?
Thanks.
somewhere in the settings should be a network selection to choose between GSM/LTE(4G) and GSM(3G) only....at least on the Verizon phones there usually is, of course it says CDMA/LTE(4G) or CDMA(3G) only

I have ATT GS3 and it says 4GLTE tiny icon, if you are sure you are in LTE zone and only getting 3g , call AT&T or go to their store , sim could be old/wrong and or your account was not properly activated.
When i got my GS3 i wasnt getting any data at all , called AT&T and they sorted it out.
Run speedtest see what you getting ?
I have at&t in chicago as well. I live up in lake county and work in des plaines. I was also at navy pier a few weeks ago. Never had anything other than 4g or LTE. I literally have never seen the 3g icon on my phone

Thanks for the replies. I'll give AT&T a call.
I did run speedtest, while the phone was displaying 3G. the download speed was 7686 and upload 5704.
Well, I called AT&T and they couldn't find any problem. After 20 minutes, they said, "There's a network outage reported in Chicago, so that must be it." I asked how long the outage has lasted, and she said 17 hours. But I've had the phone for four days, and have never seen anything but 3G.
At any rate, they said I would have to call back in a couple of days. That conveniently got the rep off the phone.
I live in a 3G area, and it says 4G on my phone. Makes me feel like they are BSing us to believe 4G is everywhere.
Only time it has been off of 4G is when I"m in an Edge area. Speaking of which, I found it interesting that while driving up I90 in Wyoming (didn't look like anything was there for miles and miles), the data speeds were great. I was so surprised. Driving the much busier highways in the midwest, it is Edge, and it sucks.
Sorry...went off topic.

Your account does need to be flagged as LTE or you won't get LTE service. I'm up in Gurnee and all over Chicagoland has pretty good LTE coverage.
Also, check your APN that you're on the "PTA" and not the older APN settings. If you see anything about cingular wap, you're on the old one.
I recommend going to an AT&T store, it's harder to blow you off when you're up in their face.
I have friends in Aurora, Lombard, Lyons and I used to work downtown; I always had great LTE signal out and about as well as my home area of Gurnee/Libertyville.
Lastly, AT&T distinguishes between "4G" which is HSPA+ and "4G LTE" which is their LTE network. Unless you're running a custom ROM with different icons, you'll have an E for edge (2.5G, total ****), 3G for a 3G area that hasn't been upgraded, 4G for a 3G area that's been "backhaul upgraded" to HSPA+ and 4G with a little LTE beneath it for an LTE area.
For me, I can tell speed-wise between "4G" and "4G LTE" mostly by the upload speed. HSPA+ (4G) I never see above 1.2Mbps or so, whereas on LTE I get up to 5Mbps roughly. Sad story is the LTE network in the Chicago area is the slowest of their LTE networks that I've seen anyway. I get so jealous of people in TX and whatnot that get like 24Mbps!
Sorry for the rambling...
One weird thing...when I click on my results in speedtest, it lists the network as LTE, even though the icon always shows 3G.
So maybe it's connecting to LTE, but not showing the correct icon? Does a download speed of 7686 seem faster than 3G?
To follow up, in case this helps anyone...
I spent another half hour on the phone with AT&T--level 1 and level 2 tech support. (The level 2 guy was much less informed than the level 1 woman.) Their bottom line was that I should exchange the phone.
However, when I use the network signal info app, it says I'm on the LTE network. So, I think I have an icon problem, not an actual network connection problem.
I think I'll just live with it, rather than exchange the phone.

Does Sprint's 4G LTE Rollout Upgrade 3G Networks?

That would totally depend on the market you're in.
The teams that are going around putting in the 4G upgrade are doing multiple things depending on the market.
For example, I asked this question specifically to a sprint tech the other day when purchasing my S3.
I live in Miramar/Pembroke Pines Florida (Just West of FtLauderdale).
Signal here is great in some spots (near I-75 or the turnpike) and almost non-existent anywhere else. Hell the other day I saw the nice little "Hey you're now roaming" message on my S3 (I never saw that on my Evo, though the signal was horrible).
The tech said that they are in fact upgrading EVERYTHING in my area, 3G, normal phone cellular and 4G LTE (they said the wimax would not be upgraded of course). It took them a minute to find the info as they had to look it up for my specific area to see what is and is not being upgraded.
She mentioned specifically that it wasn't just upgrading the current towers, but putting in more to improve coverage in areas such as Plantation, pembroke and Miramar specfically.
So my advice is to either wait and see what happens, or try to contact sprint and find out about your area.

Roam control/prl 11115 question

Has anyone had in issue running this prl and roaming? My download speeds are not any quicker at all. I can run the 00001 prl and speeds pick way up, but roaming on 11115 doesn't like it's supposed to. I ran this prl on my et4g and it worked great. This prl also didn't seem to work on my previous HTC phones (Evo4g and 3d..).
Any thoughts?

Two possibilities:
1) 11115 is not going to guarantee 3G roaming in all markets. Sprint only has 3G roaming for certain accounts in certain markets. No Sprint PRL will help you in those locations. You may just be in a location that Sprint does not have a 3G roaming agreement with anyone.
2) 11115 is a rather OLD PRL... It may be referring to 3G towers, but those towers may no longer be in service or have been reclassified in a roaming agreement to be 1x only.
That being said... 11115 provides 3G roaming in Milwaukee on my SG2, but 1x on my SG3. My SG3 gives me great 3G speeds on 12121.

Thanks! It must be the phone. My GS2 has great speed while roaming on the 11115 prl, while my GS3 can be sitting right next to it and be very slow on the same prl.
The 12121 prl wouldn't 3g roam for me in metro Detroit, but 1337 does. Fyi.

12121 roams me onto US Cellular as a first choice. 99% of the time it's a 3G signal. Sometimes US Cellular only has a 1x signal in an area, then I'm screwed.
If US Cellular isn't available at all, THEN is goes to Verizon.

4G LTE On Verizon PRL

So this was strange.
Riding the bus in Los Angeles listening to music and surfing the web on my phone when LTE pops up. Now as you can see I have PRL 1 which forces roaming on Verizon towers. I checked my speeds to see if this was indeed true and I was hitting 16mbps+.
This lasted about a minute until I moved out of the area and signal went back to 3G.
Anyone can explain?

Sure, you rode by a Sprint tower that was broadcasting LTE. You can't connect to Verizon LTE as you don't have the proper hardware (VZW LTE: 700 mhz, Sprint LTE: 1900 mhz)

That doesn't explain why I don't get LTE signal on the Verizon PRL on spots I know to have Sprint LTE though. For example at home I get a steady LTE signal -although at joke speeds. sometimes I'll be hitting 4mbps other times I'll get lucky if i even hit 1mbps- but I'll still use PRL 1 and not get Sprint LTE.
So was this a glitch that made me jump on Sprint tower although I was on forced roaming?
I think of going back and testing if this happens again. For anyone in LA, this was in Figueroa and Colorado Pasadena, CA

This has been explained numerous times... when you are roaming (on Verizon) but you have an LTE connection, it is two different signals. You are getting EVDO/1xRTT coverage from Verizon and LTE coverage from Sprint... no one on Sprint is roaming Verizon's LTE. Two different frequency spectrums of throughput.

Actually, I think the OP meant it's impossible to grab Sprint's LTE 1900 on a Verizon only PRL. Due to common belief, it's said you must be on a Sprint PRL that has LTE enabled to connect to it. The OP's situation is a rare one.
I wonder if Digiblur can enlighten us here, since I've always believed you needed a Sprint-Only LTE capable PRL to connect to Sprint's LTE network.

I wasn't aware I could jump to Sprint LTE on a Verizon only PRL considering in areas I do get Sprint LTE coverage, I won't get 4G unless I update my PRL to a Sprint one.

Can't you just check your assigned LTE IP address to see if it was issued by Verizon or not?
I bet if you look at the LTE engineering screens it shows a Sprint PCS G block connection. From what I have seen in the past, you do need a PRL with the MCC/MNC records for that Geo. I have seen the Nexus not need this, probably because it doesn't have a qualcomm chipset.

Will someone please link me to the file for PRL version 1? (assuming this is still the best option) I am in a rural area where Verizon has 4Glte but sprint data sucks. I've searched but can't find it. Also, if I switch to s stock rooted rom, flash it, and then recover my current rom (Eclipse), will the PRL stick or revert back to what it was?
