tryd several pc's, and just about every trick i could google...still will not connect to device
I was also having days of trouble with this, but I can connect consistently now. Here's what worked for me on Win7-64:
Get yourself to a fresh start (uninstall drivers and Kies):
1) with your phone plugged in and USB debugging OFF (in my unprofessional experience, Kies will never connect if your phone's usb debugging is enabled), go to your Windows Device Manager. You should see either yellow bangs because your phone's drivers aren't installed correctly, or you'll have "SAMSUNG Mobile USB Composite Device" under USB controllers. Highlight it, click Properties, Driver tab, click Uninstall. Delete the device if it's still visible.
2) unplug your phone
3) If you're using the most recent version of Kies, I recommend downgrading to 2.0.2 because I read other forum posts about complaints with 2.0.3. Go to Windows Start - All Programs - Samsung - Kies - Uninstall Kies.
4) reboot
Now install stuff fresh
5) install Kies 2.0.2. I just googled it. Start Kies. Do NOT update it when you get the popup asking.
6) plug in your SGS2 (remember, USB debugging = OFF). You'll see a lot of typical driver installation bubbles. Go back to your Device Manager and confirm that you have no yellow bangs and you do see your SAMSUNG device under USB controllers.
At this point, Kies should already be connecting. I hope it works for you; it did me.
As an aside, Kies sucks. It's good to prove you have connectivity, install drivers, and to flash your firmware. If you actually want to sync Outlook contacts, Outlook calendar, and music, use MyPhoneExplorer (which btw requires USB debugging ON).

Ok so I want to root my epic, there's just one problem... ADB doesn't see my phone. It is listed in my device manager and is showing as working. but when i try and list adb devices it shows nothing. My phone is in USB Debugging mode. I have the Samsung drivers installed. I just cannot figure out why this is not working for me. I have looked everywhere and have been unable to find anything that has helped my problem at all. Tried to upload a pic showing my device manager but i guess i cant yet because i haven't made enough posts yet. Device manager show my device in three different sections one under USB Controllers as SAMSUNG USB Composite Device, One under Ports (COM & LPT) as SAMSUNG Mobile Modem Diagnostic Serial Port (WDM) (COM4) , and one under Modems as SAMSUNG Mobile Modem. Thanks for any ideas.

Try different USB port, switch data cable and also uninstall - reboot- reinstall driver - reboot - reboot phone - try again.
If you are using a laptop sometimes it's flaky. Reboot often and remember that you may have to kill that exe process... Think it was adb.exe a few times and just screw with it until you trick it to work. Trial and error

Ok so I wated a video on rooting samsung epic and one thing that I noticed was that when he hooked up his epic it showed up in the device manager under ADB Devices and mine shows up in 3 other locations. Is this where my problem is... am I just having issues with my drivers?

Turn off any security and uninstall the samsung drivers. reinstall drivers and watch and make sure your phone is detected by your pc. Now run your rooting app.

Hello. I am having the same problem as described above. The Epic is installing as a modem (on my Win7 PC) instead of an Android Composite ADB Interface. I cannot connect at all to the Epic (cannot connect via adb with debugging turned on and it I try and mount the Epic no folders show up on the PC). I have reinstalled the drivers and checked all of my serial ports. Also, I have a Samsung Captivate that works fine using the same system. Incidentally my wife took the Phone into Sprint to get the latest android version and they gave her a hard time cause it was rooted. I think they may have done something to the phone cause I pulled pictures off her phone to the PC last week. Help please!!
OK, so I got the Eipc to work. I still do not know the root cause but here are the steps I took to "fix it":
1) Unplugged USB cable and disabled usb debugging
2) Plugged in phone to USB and selected Mass storage. The drivers were installed correctly
3) Unplugged phone and turned on USB debugging)
4) Plugged in phone and the proper devices were detected but windows hung on installation of a "strange" unkown ADB device
5) Unplugged phone and plugged back into the USB port and all was working!
Hope this helps.
Hi.
Have Boostmobile Epic that came unrooted.
Downloaded drivers and phone shows in device manager under com ports.
Tried 11 USB cables then saw a video from qbking and bought a blackberry to use its cable making it 12 cables, none work.
Tried 2 computers with Vista and Win 7 x64.
Epic won't communicate with either comp with debugging on or off.
As i said in topic, one click root won't work. Says Phone is not connected.
I also cannot sideload content onto SD card because it does not show in My Computer.
It has been flashed to boost so i assume it has communicated with a PC in the past.
What can i do to fix this?
Reboot pc and phone then try again. If that doesn't work then uninstall drivers from pc then install again. Reboot pc after install after reboot plug in epic then wait for it to finish installing drivers then reboot both again then use odin.
You can also connect the phone with usb debugging on, then go into device manager on the computer and look for "other" or samsung android in USB section. Click on that and select update drivers and let windows update search and install drivers...it takes awhile.
just did the uninstall drivers then reboot both thing.
Driver installation shows device ready to use as...
SAMSUNG USB Composite Device
SAMSUNG Mobile Modem #2
SAMSUNG Mobile Modem Diagnostic Serial Port (WDM) (COM5)
All ready to use.
But Still not showing in my computer for file transfer or working in usb debugging mode for root.

Try the update driver choice in device manager. The CDC driver is missing. I think it loads 5 drivers if I remember correctly with USB on...yeah the mass storage driver is missing too. Let Windows update find them all.

Hi, thanks for help.
Just tried uninstalling everything and letting windows find drivers. Windows found a different driver package from S3 studio or something but I still get no mass storage or root.
I've read you can root and install roms without a computer Guess that will have to be my route.
As far as mass storage goes... It's annoying but I pulled the back off and put SD card directly into computer
You are sliding down the pulldown on your epic screen and pushing mount sd card for mass storage right?

Some computers are finicky and will only work on the USB port used to install the drivers. Odin only works on the left side of my laptop and mass storage works on the right...go figure!
The fact that the phone thinks it connects and the computer probably makes the connection noise shows there is still a driver problem. Did you reboot the computer and phone after the full driver installation?
Yes I restarted both several times while installing/uninstalling
Drivers... I have just accepted that I need to remove the card to sideload content.
On a side note, I am now afraid to root my phone and change the roms because I'm on boostmobile and will be unable to connect phone to a computer to fix if something goes wrong.

after you install drivers, reboot, then plug in your phone w debugging on, it should install a bunch of drivers, then take forever on modem, unplug and replug the usb from the phone really fast, this should trip it up into moving to the next device... there should be at least two or three more. If you have GB loaded for some reason the RNDIS drivers are wonky. Make sure you use a USB port on your motherboard, not on a PCI, not on a front port... the drivers are acting weird lately, like they changed em up a bit... idunno... but once you get a setup, dont mess with it! Hope somethin helps... Its almost guaranteed the drivers, unless the Boost is the issue, idunno...
ive had that same problem ever sense ive got the phone, what if you havent given up there is another way for you to connect to your computer. It is very simple and fast it is how i connect now and it works every time.
1. Have computer on and Phone off
2. Boot your phone into ClockworkMod 3.1.0.1 (Power/camera/volume down)(it must be this version of clockwork)
3. Go to mounts and storage
4. On the bottom of the menu you must click mount usb storage.
5. Plug your phone into the computer and your computer should recognize your phone now.
Also if your on Vista / Win7 you should run the command line (cmd) or the bat file to root with admin rights: Right click cmd or the run.bat and select run as administrator and that hould help.

good to know.
OK, did a search in this forum for "Found New Hardware SAMSUNG Mobile MTP Device" as well as "connect to Kies USB XP" and other variations of these. I believe I have tried all suggestions that I have found, but advice would be appreciated
Firstly, I have a Dell mini 10 running xp that my E4GT connects to fine through Kies. My E4GT is running StarburstROM 1.9.5 with LoStKernel 1.0.0.8+EXP
My old HP pavilion, running the same version of XP however just says over and over "Found New Hardware SAMSUNG Mobile MTP Device" and the new hardware sound plays about every 5 seconds.
After a fresh install of the most recent version of Kies, I tried
Different USB ports
Different cables
Making sure no files have extensions longer than 15 characters. (or was it 16...?)
Recovering the drivers through Kies
Downloading and reinstalling/reapplying the USB drivers found in various links here on XDA
Uninstalling and reinstalling Kies
Going to Device Manager, right clicking on the yellow triangle of the samsung mtp device and directing the computer to install drivers from there
Still I get an endless loop of Found new hardware. Unplugging results in "a problem occurred during hardware installation...etc" Any thoughts I haven't tried yet?
Make sure usb debugging is not checked in settings/development/applications.
what? i thought usb debugging had to be checked?
and either way it shouldn't matter if the phone is in download mode, correct? maybe i am wrong. i would assume that since he got it to work on a different computer it is not a setting on the phone and a problem with the computer reading the device's drivers.
Yeah, USB debugging is off. Tried it with it on just for giggles, but no joy. I may just have to accept that it won't connect to that compy. Can't get it to connect to Kies or even connect just for file transfer. Had same trouble with my OG epic. Maybe something about the original driver install from back then....
I'll try manually removing all drivers associated with the device and see if a reinstall from scratch (again) will work. I'll also check the .net version again, but I think I already did that. Thanks all!
Hi all,
I've read a lot of forums on what seems to be a pretty common issue, however, with each attempt at a fix the answer is still elusive.
the problem i'm experiencing is that when I connect my (unrooted) Galaxy S2 to my pc (running windows 7) the USB device is not recognised. The phone says that it is connected (USB Connect MTP-Connected), however, when I try to access my phone via Kies or explorer it is not there. I also get an error message saying that the 'device is not recognised'.
I've taken the following actions:
- Reinstalled a fresh version of Kies
- Reinstalled samsung drivers (once prompted by Kies)
- Tried at least 3 USB cables including the original Samsung cable
- As per one of the blogs i read, i switched to USB debugging on and then off as there was no effect
- I've tried turning on bluetooth, then connecting the USB device (also a 'fix' i've seen on another forum)
- I've restarted my phone a number of times
- Connected via different USB ports
- Restarted my PC
Could anyone please help me.
Thanks,
Rob

Uninstall all drivers, and Kies.
Restart the computer.
No go to device Manager under Human Interface Device/Universal Serial Bus controllers and see if there is that little yellow triangle there. If so click and uninstall any device with the aforementioned icon.
Now reset again.
Go to the Samsung website and download the drivers for the phone. Restart the computer yet again. Almost done.
Now attach your phone and it should be identified.
Go ahead and install Samsung Kies and you should be ok. I hope all this works.
I had a very similar issue with my last SII. One day it just simply would not be recognized by many computers using various USB cords including the OEM one. Windows always said something along the lines of " USB device not recognized, a device connected to this computer has malfunctioned." The computer would pick it up bit was listed as an unknown device in the device manager. Turns out it was a hardware failure so I had so get a warranty replacement

Not very helpful answers... you may have sorted this out already but...
One solution found on other threads that worked for me was this:
uninstall Kies
key in the dialer *#7284#
it has 4 option there..
UART (MODEM/PDA)
USB (MODEM/PDA)
Only change the USB setting.
Select PDA, if it already selected, select MODEM, don't hit "back", try reconnect, wait for windows to respond.
Unplug, then select PDA, try reconnect.
usb device not recognised

Hello everyone. My E4GT is unable to connect my computer after I install the drivers. I tried reinstalling them, used different usb ports, and different cables to find out that it still wouldn't work. The weird think is when I connect my phone to another computer after installing the drivers, it works. I'm hoping that someone knows of a fix to this.
OS: Windows XP SP3 32-bit
Edit: I solved this problem. What the problem was that I was missing usb.inf in WINDOWS/INF . To get this file, I got it from the other computer. At the time of me doing this, my only goal was to fix my webcam because I was getting an error about a missing .inf file.

Looks like you tried different USB cables (hopefully NEW ones), and different ports too. Along with Kies.
Try going into device manager (check show hidden devices too!) and uninstall ANY Samsung drivers or software you have installed. And reboot.
Download and install the latest drivers for the Epic 4GT [ http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.c...342248/Sprint_d710_USB_Driver_v1_3_2360_0.exe ]
Reboot your system. Then try to connect again.
If you have some type of Antivirus/Antispyware application you may also want to try and temporarily disable it too. I've seen this happen before.

I'm pretty sure it is not my antivirus because the other computer has the exact same antivirus. Also, in Device Manager, I enabled hidden devices and I do not see any drivers that seem like they have to do with Samsung.

Wow not sure what else to try. If you've tried removing all drivers and re-installing them, using brand new USB cable(s), using different USB ports and disabling AV software and if it does connect and show up on other PCs yet it still wont show on one PC, then something is amiss with that machine.
When you're connecting your device you do have it on too right? I'm sure you do but just checking.
Did you install any ROM on this device already? There are some international versions that if installed on this device disable the USB port.
And does it show up on other machines just not this one?
If it shows up on other machines than it there is something amok with that PC.
If it doesn't then..
One last thing you might want to attempt is to download sfhub's One-click FF18 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721229 download the 'reset data' and extract the exe.
Make sure you phone is off and NOT attached to the PC.
Run the One-click application.
Simultaneously Press and Hold [Power] [VolDn] until confirmation screen appears
Press [VolUp] to enter Download mode
Then Attach your phone via USB to the PC and see if it shows up on a COM Port (anyone is OK).
IF it does you can then at least flash the stock rooted FF18 and get the device to probably work correctly next time you plug it in after of course the entire Odin/Update finishes and your phone restarts.
Just reaching here but hope that helps.

Well then that's it. PC is the issue it won't show. Something is pooped.
Good luck.
Just to be clear, when someone says, 'try different usb ports' make sure you only use the ports on the motherboard and not the ones on the front of the case or door.
It's the difference between powered and un powered.
