Does CWM Recovery work differently on Samsung phones or is it just currently only available through a hacked kernel because the E4GT is not officially supported?
It’s my understanding that by flashing CWM through Rom Manager just replaces the recovery partition but does not change the kernel on the device.
Lastly, do Samsung devices have any security measures like HTC’s S-On/S-Off that will effect the ability to flash CWM through Rom Manager?
Thanks,
No it doesnt work different on samsung phones. The one we are using now is hacked and it needs to be made specifically for this phone. Rom manager is not updated for this phone yet. We never had rom manager support on the original epic. No there is no security on this phone. Bootliadet is not locked.

Hello Folks,
I recently purchased ROM Manager Premium and am unable to use it as anytime I try to flash ClockworkMod Recovery it says "An error occurred while downloading your recovery."
Now, I'm still a beginner when it comes to this sort of thing; Could it be because I already have this flashed from when I oden'd my phone to DK18/EB13? If so, are there any tips to get this functioning as I'd like to use it's features.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Last I've read in this forum, ROM Manager is not compatible with the Epic. Someone please correct me if I am incorrect.
Ugh. If that's the case I'll just have to use it on my gf's EVO to get my money's worth. I would find that disappointing since it is one of the options it allows you to select during the "Confirm Phone Model" dialog.
Hey I could be wrong, since I've never used the application. However, I believe I've seen theimpaler747, our local moderator, post that it doesn't work with the Epic. You can try using the advanced search feature on the forums to search for ROM Manager. There have been a few posts/threads about it in the past.
You are correct, Rom manager does not work correctly with the epic.

Yep sorry it doesn't flash cwm like it does for other phones. Have to run the one click root with cwm.

umm
I own an Epic and have used CWM to flash a few different ROMs, so I know they do have at least some compatability. I am currently in a "bricked" state, however- so take that as you will. I do not think CWM had anything to do with it though.
Rom Manager did work when I was on DI18 and successfully installed CWM. Now it sometimes works and I usually use it to just easily rename my backups I made with CWM in 3 fingered salute.
Lately I have seen that it will DL a couple of versions of CWM, but they won't work properly. The main reason I bought it was to send the developer of CWM some slush funds.
Is there any way to get CWM on this phone without compiling a custom kernel based on the source? At this point it seems obvious that the LOS issues are caused/increased when replacing the stock kernel.
I am coming from an EVO and I don't believe CWM needed to be included in a kernel to be installed. Is it different with this phone?

have you looked into this?

From my understanding....and I'm not a developer I don't think so. The Kernel has to be recompiled to add CWM and you need thave access to source code to be able to do it. I don't think you can just pull the stock kernel from the phone and add CWM it...don't think it's that simple.
The Captivate has a solution where they can go into regular recovery and run an update.zip to get into CWM recovery. The CWM recovery isnt permanent in this case, it is loaded into RAM each time. I wonder if something like this could work for us?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
what i do each time is flash the kernal that has CWM.. make my backup of the rom or flash whatever zip i need to flash.. then i flash back to the stock kernal.
Yeah I never understood that, coming from the Evo, Evo 3D, and Nexus S 4G. On those phones, or at least the Evo and 3D, recovery has its own kernel (usually built of the AOSP kernel), and has nothing to do with the kernel on the phone. So why does it work differently on Samsung phones?

Hello
I have a Samsung Tablet 10.1 and I remember using Odin and pushing a file to the Tablet, the files were SU binary and maybe the SU app, that's it
I liked what I did because I have pretty much the original tablet with original Kernel, I only "pushed" the SU files
However, with the Samsung Galaxy S II (Sprint Epic 4G Touch), the only root that I found involves changing the kernel
Any way to do it WITHOUT changing the stock kernel?

You can always flash the stock kernel pulled from a nonrooted device and have complete stock but root.
I did this with the tar file from acs pulled from a nonrooted phone....

These are root with no kernel. The former is deodexed if you want to install any mods, the later is stock.

I don't think that's true, and neither does the developer of those ROMs, but okay.
I was wondering why we can't use superoneclick

curious why you'd like to have the stock kernel intact after root. is there a benefit to this? i'm coming from an EVO 4G where it seems where the modded kernels were almost always better than the stock kernel.

There's a vocal group of people that seem to insist that the loss of service (LOS) bug is not affected by the kernel. Most of their evidence seems to be that people get hit by the LOS bug even on full stock.
However, the LOS bug seems to hit people on stock once a week, if that. I've never seen it and I've had the phone since launch day, which is about a month now.
The LOS bug seems to hit people on custom kernels as much as multiple times a day.

I just rooted my phone using Zedomax's guide and I want to flash the Starburst ROM but I downloaded Clockworkmod in the market. Is it the same as using Odin to install Clockworkmod? Will I run into any issues using Clockworkmod from the Market?
Clockworkmod recovery is what you need to get and it is not available in the market. You will need to use Odin to flash one of the kernels in the development section that has Clockwork included. After that, you can use it instead of Odin for almost all flashing needs.

I got confused with thos 2(rom manager and clockworkmod) but i used the market one to flash backup and restore with no issues.

What you downloaded from the market is ROM Manager from the same person he maintains the official versions of Clockworkmod. It integrates with CWM to allow for easier flashing of custom ROMs and what not. Unfortuantely the E4GT is still not officially support so you will have to use CWM manually for the time being.

Thanks for the replies!
Hey guys. So, I've been rooting for quite a while now. My most recent is the Epic 4g Touch. I've had it for the past 2 months and just recently managed to stump myself. There is a new kernel out there called fluxxi ics kernel. Well, I flashed it after I flashed my AOKP ICS rom, and now my phone won't boot. Normally, I would just reflash the stock el26.tar file with odin. However, all of a sudden my computer won't recognize my phone. So I'm at a loss. I did some research on the usb jig, and I'm curious as to whether or not I should get it. Would it help in my computer finding my phone due to the reset, or do I needa JTAG? Thanks in advance guys. Hope for some answers soon.
You flashed a kernel that is for I-9100 it's Galaxy S2 yes but totally different phone. So it seem's like you are still able to get into download mode am I correct, but the computer no longer recognizes your phone? I don't think a jig will help if this is the case your best bet is sending out for JTAG repair. Hopefully you will get this straightened out and this will be a lesson learned not to flash any random kernel.
Did you not read that you were in the wrong section and about to flash an international kernel for a different phone?
Install/reinstall the usb drivers needed, including the international drivers if that helps, than just Odin one of sfhubs Odin one clicks.

Thanks for the quick replies guys. The kernel isn't an international one. The forum said it was designed for all Galaxy S2's, including the Epic Touch 4G. And it does work, as long as you flash it before the ROM and not after. When I enter download mode, it still says I'm running the D710 with a custom binary and yada yada yada. The international drivers won't help me in this situation it seems.
Just to give yall some more info, I'm running AOKP Build 37. Everything I have found online so far has said they work well together. If there were a way I could either mount the external sd card to the phone (which when I try to do in recovery, it says it can't be found) or if I could mount the phone to my pc, I'd be set.
Do you have mobile Odin?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
I do, but the phone will not boot past the Galaxy logo.

Could you please direct me to to this forum and to where it says that this was designed for all Galaxy S2, including the Epic Touch 4G only reference I seen on this kernel is that it is an I-9100. Might give us more reference and info also.

Wouldn't the ROM overwrite the kernel anyways. Every ROM has a kernel baked into it unless you removed it first then flash. I'm never heard of a kernel that needs to be flashed before the ROM unless you need to use it's recovery like el26.

I think you may of missed read something my friend. Also for future reference I would only flash things from my section of whatever forum you are in. Something as critical to the survival of your phone as a kernel or a modem I would not flash on a whim from anywhere else outside of xda.... I hope you get your phone back up and running and hopefully this will make you and others more cautious in the future.
Question - did you post a thread in the area that you got the kernel?
just use odin one lick
