Missing/Broken Features in Mango Maps - Windows Phone 7 General

I have the following issues in the maps application after upadting to mango. would be interested to see if others have the same issues.
1) The option to set maps to "rotate with my current direction" does not do anything. Maps always stay facing north, even when dricing directions are listed.
2) No voice announcements for driving directions, this was well publicised in several videos. I cannot see the options for "tap screen to announce next turn" under setting anywhere.
Anyone else verify these are bugs/missing features (I am in UK on o2 carrier on standard HTCHD7 - no hacks)

So:: 63 views and no replies? Somone on mango must be able to confirm if they see that issues as me...

As far as I remember voice notifications are region specific and not available in every country. Concerning your issue with the map rotation, I can only assume that this uses the compass feature of the device. Now if you lack the correct drivers for that feature, which many users seem to struggle with, it simply won't work. Works fine for me though.

1) My map rototes when I was driving yesterday to follow my direction of travel.
2) Correct, No voice annoucements, very annoying! Although just reading the large instructions isnt too bad I suppose.
I am also an UK O2 user with a HD7, which I forced to Mango.

I also forced to mango, but I`m left thinking that my compass driver is not working or completley missing. I think I will flash a pre-nodo O2 rom and re-apply the update.

I have a Samsung Omnia 7 and I forced the Mango update. During the update I did see the Samsung Firmware update take place first. I had the same problems with the map rotating feature then found out that it only works when you have set directions to somewhere and leave the direction list on screen. Saying that you must also be on the correct path (the blue line on the map) set for you by bing. You will see that the line will straigh down the middle of the phone and when you come to a turning it will turn the map to get it back to the middle (rotating with your current direction). It lame that it just doesnt work without all that but still that how i have found it to work on the Omnia 7.

me too
Just got my 02 UK HD7 back from HTC after a warranty claim. The phone came back with official mango on it and no option to activate audio in maps.
I think thus must be a UK nanny state thing. As the authorities don't want us having to tap the screen to hear the direction as this is how the TBT in mango works
Either that or 02 have blocked it because they want to sell us something instead !
Typical
Custom rom flash me thinks !!!!

Not an O2 thing as I forced Mango on my sim free Omnia 7, have the OEM firmware update too and no voice here either

Get GMM 2.0 to work on your DASH!!!

I read it on a thread (I WISH I could remember where so credit could be given where due)... but the solution worked like a charm.
I have a Dash running WM6 on T-Mob. Since the launch of GMM2 Ive been both excited and terribly disappointed that I couldn't get it to work. However... the solution is simple: get "appunlock" (from surreal networks) and install. Then reboot.
That's it. After I did this, my location showed IMMEDIATELY on the GMM app as a happy little blue dot. YAY!!!
Happy locating everyone!!!
Thank you so much for the tip. I used the APP unloked on my S621 and MyLocation feature works now.
Where you been?

Um honestly where have you been? It's been known for quite a while that you can get MANY smartphone apps to work on the dash by simply app unlocking it. I'd suggest hunting around first before posting because you're dishing old info...
yeh you haven't app unlocked your phone yet?? wtf
You guys are butts. I don't even know what "MyLocation" is or what it's for, but I have app unlocked my phone and performed many tweaks. That's why we come to this site--to learn new things!
App Unlock for GMM
Okay, my HTC S621 also says 'location is temporarily unavailable' Since I've had the phone I've upgraded it to Rogers WM6 (although I'm with Suncom), I've installed numerous applications like Google Maps, Microsoft Voice Command, TCPMP + plugins, Palringo, Fring, etc. I did have to use the methods mentioned on this site to temporarily lift the CID lock to install WM6.
But I'm thinking that this would that mean that my phone isn't application locked. Or does the application unlock, do something else. It seems to me that since I can pretty much install anything I'd like, that my phone is not application locked, and therefore this GMM proposed fix isn't really a fix.
I look forward to your responses.
Thank you,
Tim
just tryin' to lend a hand...
Im no expert.... clearly. However, Ive never had to appunlock my phone to install or run the software I have added to my Dash. Ive had it for well over a year and the "My Location" feature of GMM is the only thing Ive run across (that I have any need for) that has required appunlock to work. Old news or not... since GMM2 has been released nearly all (I'd say 5 out of 6) of the postings about it that are associated with the Dash say that while the mapping software worked fine, the "My Location" feature did not. It always and immediately (without attempting to connect tot he network) gave a "You location is temporarily unavailable" message. Since adding appunlock the feature now works as it was designed. My intention isnt to waste your time with 'old news' (if you already know it); It's simply to help others out there like me who just want the program to work and are looking for a solution. If you already have it working, why bother reading this thread?
Just trying to help a brotha out, you know? :-D
My S621 was app unlocked. I've installed many unsigned apps, including GMM2.0, but the MyLocation feature didn't work. I just ran the surreal appunlock, and now it works!
Weird, no idea why it works, but it does...
as I understand it, appunlock makes a few registry edits that allow your device to run 'non-microsoft-certified' programs. Ive added a number of other programs without issue (just as you are saying), so I was a bit surprised that this solution would be necessary...nonetheless, it worked, and was an easy fix. Hope it works for you too!

Same with my phone. It was already app unlocked but the Sureal Network app is the only one that work on to get My Location working.
You were correct!
Apparently the appunlock cab file does something to the settings. Because now it works just fine! It zoomed to within 1700 meters or so from my house. If anything it'll at least get you in the vicinity of where you're at.
This really makes the Google Maps worthwhile having on your phone, even if you do lack GPS.
I just want to say thanks to whoever started this thread because I HAD Google Maps, but was not aware that there was an update! I already had the Surreal Networks AppUnlock, so when I upgraded to GMM 2, (which I discovered after reading this thread), I was able to see "My Location." It's great! Thanks to those of you who know who you are!

My comment wasn't a "hey retard nur nur" but it was a response to your apparent "fix" to get GMM to work. I was simply stating that app unlocking your phone is your answer to many installation and functionality issues. Sorry if i came off as abrasive but it wasn't meant as strong as it appeared. Let me reiterate: "App unlocking isn't just the answer to get mylocation on gmm working, it's your answer to many of your installation issues" there problem solved..
No Prob. And likewise, I appreciate your clarification. :-D
Now... if only we could start digging into/toying with the 'upcoming' WM6.1...
I just unlocked my phone and all but my location is still not working. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Did you use Surreal Networks AppUnlock program?
Are you somewhere with a decent signal? It won't work if you're in the Boonies!
Yes I have three bars on my cell phone, and I do not see why it would not work? Any suggestions?
Yeah i also have no luck with the my location feature, i used the appunlock from surreal, I have four bars and am on the Edge network right now, but it always says that my location is unavailable...
doesn't work on my cavalier either
not working
be sure to reboot your phone after the appunlock and then 're-set" GMM2. I believe you go to "Menu/Options/Reset Google Maps".
That should work. beyond that, unfortunately, I would have to suggest going to one of the Google community forums, but I really didnt find much there when I looked.
Good Luck!

Telus Vogue Update finally here!

So Aaron McCarthy discovered a new Vogue rom for Telus users (I REPEAT: TELUS ONLY!!!). It was at one of the known IP addresses which HTC has used. It was accidentally leaked or opened for a tester, I suppose. It's also seemingly no longer available... I get "Directory Listing Denied" when I follow the link now. So, of course I've uploaded my copy to rapidshare. Back up any important files on your phone and then enjoy:
http://rapidshare.com/files/1282900...4350H_3.41.00_Ship_withPPSTPatch1.20.exe.html
It'll be easy to install, just run the EXE on your windows XP/Vista computer, connect your vogue with Activesync or Windows Mobile Device Center when the program prompts you to do so, and follow the on-screen instructions. It took me approximately 15 minutes to do this. Add five for letting the phone customize itself.
I also did some messing with it to get everything working. It does not fully function out of box (which is probably why it's not actually released yet).
For me, the steps that got the GPS and Internet to work:
-Dial *22803 , 1 (for English), 1 (program your handset). Wait for reset.
-Install Google Maps and a registry editor.
-Search for a registry key called GPSMODE and change it's dword value from 2 to 4. This may not be necessary, but it worked for me.
<EDIT>Registry change is definitely not necessary, I've tried it both ways with no different effect. What this setting does might be explained better in the next post.</EDIT>
-Soft reset.
-Run Google Maps and any other freeware, no problem.
I'm certain that some GPS programs will require initialization/tweaks, and I'd bet that most of those have already been examined elsewhere in this forum. Anyway the GPS is seemingly solid and accurate. I placed it next to a handheld garmin unit and speed, lattitude, longitude were matched on both devices over a half-hour trip. It will certainly NOT work indoors.
As for Rev.A, I honestly cannot tell you anything about it. I'm in a CDMA only area for the next 3 weeks.
Thanks again to Aaron McCarthy for discovering the Rom and letting us know so that I could copy it before we got locked out. Here's the thread he started : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2385096
by setting GPSMode to 4 you disable the GPS. Not the best idea....
GPSMode 1 = ONLY pure GPS
GPSMode 2 = GPS + aGPS
GPSMode 4 = aGPS only
Got it installed without any issues. However Google maps and the Telus Navigator programs don't seem to be able to find the GPS... Well, to be more precise, googlemaps doesn't give an error. It just sits there seeking satellites. The Telus NAV doesn't get past the startup screen. Any suggestions?
WM6.1 is working fine on my phone but is it possible that I actually don't have the built in GPS even though it is a Telus HTC Touch?

It has been known since a while that all Vogues phones (or CDMA Touch) have the GPS hardware built in. It is just not activated by Telus yet.
This new ROM should be released officially by Telus soon in order to let users have GPS and better performance.

Also, does this ROM improve Bluetooth and device overall performance?

Thanks for this ROM. Can't be more easy to upgrade a ROM.
GPS is working fine. It took several try and a very clear sky (no tree) to make first connexion. It was so slow to connect that I suspect AGPS (cellular tower triangulation assist) is not working.
At 3 bars of reception, in EVDO REV A zone, I get a DL speed of 150 to 400kb/s which is pretty lame and just a bit better than before rev A.
One problem:
When clicking on status icons on the top bar (volume, battery, etc.), it used to display the control directly. Now it displays an intermediate screen repeating those icons but in a larger mode. It is buggy because it doesn't display message icons if I previously clicked Dismiss. Then I can't go to my messages.
In Start, Settings, System, TouchFLO, there is no setting to remove this screen.
I tried HKLM->Software->HTC->EnlargeTitleBar->Enable=0 without success.
Is it something that comes with WM6.1?
Is it Telus ROM specific?
Do Sprint official ROM got the same problem?
Any reg to remove this?
That is too funny

If you go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=406320&page=2 and go to post #14 you can see the guide to improving GPS locks on the telus rom. I mean DRASTICALLY. From initally loading the rom I went from getting 4-5 locks maybe after a few minutes on a cold GPS start then once I changed all the settings and did a soft reset I was getting 6 to 7 satellite locks down in my basement. Pretty impressive
It's not as complicated as it seems to be in the post I made. Pretty straight forward actually and I would recommend it to anyone who wants better GPS reception
In regards to Rev A speeds. I'm in London ontario so would think there would be rev A in the area but I dont get any better download speeds. I still download around 600-800 kbps. Which is really good enough for me. I dont know if rev A actually was supposed to increase your download speed or if it improved upload speeds making Voip easier and allowing you to have data and phone stuff going on at the same time. All I know is my internet speed didnt change but Rev A was enabled.

Every time, before using this, an already established data connexion is needed BEFORE looking for GPS satellite. The GPS will not establish the connection if it's not there. A simple solution is to open Google map and move the map up to a download is required BEFORE making the GPS satellite connexion.

Yep - and it appears to be identical to the one referenced in this thread from 3 weeks ago. That's kind of a disappointment considering how much trouble the tech-naive user is going to have getting the gps to work and getting their data connection back after flashing.

2 weeks ago I sent a support ticket to HTC stating that the GPS fix is difficult to get, mainly because all GPS assisted features (aGPS) are disabled by default in the radio (can't be fixed by a simple registry tweak). I even pointed them to one solution of many (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=406320&page=2 post #14). Then no correction and not even a mention in the documentation.
I just can't imagine how many phone calls they will get from upgraders complaining that the GPS can't find satellites after 5 minutes...

Access orangeworld from generic desire

Hi Guys,
I have been following this forum for years, but have never had the need to post til now.
Coming from a G1, I've just made the transition to a glorious Desire on a Orange UK 'Panther' tariff, from Phones4u.
One of the highlights of the tariff is fee access to their Orange Maps app (supposively pre installed), which I'm told is a semi-decent sat-nav software. But I found no reference to it, or any other pre-installed Orange crap on my phone. After spending over 30 mins on the phone with an strong indian accented Orange Rep named 'Ricky' (suprisingly better informed then the usual monkeys*), it seems I was sold a generic Desire phone from Phone4u with none of Orange's pre-installed crap....YESSS!!!
Here is the issue, it seems you cannot get access to the Orange Maps app from a non-orange branded phone. More specifically you can not access h**p://orangeworld.co.uk which has links to download it from a generic phone. Even though i'm paying for the service as part of tariff.... frekkin Toasters!!!**
In my determination to stick it to the man, I have found what may be a solution, but do not know how to apply it to the Desire. The following thread with a non-obvious title: "How to install Orange Maps on non Orange Firmware" (google it, can't hyperlink it, as I'm a new poster), has a solution for a Samsung phone and I'm wondering if I could get it to work on the desire:
The fix.
1) Enter Admin setting menu *#5239870*#
...........
5) goto number 7, UAgent
should look something like this:
SAMSUNG-S8000/S8000
XEII2 SHP/VPP/R5
Jasmine/1.0
Nextreaming
SMM-MMS/1.2.0
.......
change the second line to this:
POIG1 SHP/VPP/R5
so it now looks like this
SAMSUNG-S8000/S8000
POIG1 SHP/VPP/R5
Jasmine/1.0
Nextreaming
SMM-MMS/1.2.0
.....
save and exit.
Click to collapse
what is a uAgent and how do I change it on the Android OS? Will it even fix my issue?
Whilst the maps is a feature I want, I'm not desperate enough to cancel my contract => goto new contract with Orange phone with Orange ROM. So It'd be great if someone could help.
Many Thanks,
Digital_Apoc
Update: Ok so it seems I can't access orangeworld.co.uk via WiFi on my phone but CAN over 3g if I switch off the WiFi??? Still going the the maps page gives me "Sorry byt Orange Maps will not work on your handset...." though the desire is on the support list...

Definition of Ironic:

"Welcome to Orange and your Panther plan. Get started and setup your inclusive services by clicking h*tp://orangeworld.co.uk/r/panther"... lol
I had that installed for around a day before I flashed my desire with the generic Rom to get rid of all the orange cr4p. If I remember it looked just like google maps which is free unless someone can tell me differently.
I tried to set it up, as it was free, on my Orange branded handset. I kept getting an error about not being able to set it up correctly; this is quite common on this phone it seems. The app itself was installed but the maps would not download/configure correctly.
I rang tech support for another issue and they told me that the phone is listed as not compatible with Orange maps, god knows why it comes installed on their ROM. So until they either update the program (or more likely enabled a flag saying the Desire can use Orange maps) we probably won't be able to download it. That said you might be able to get the apk from somewhere? May just be tech support were lying/drunk
I flashed my handset with a generic ROM to get rid of all the Orange garbage anyway and now I can't even re-install the app itself using the link from Orangeworld (You can text 'Orange Maps' to 247).
I seem to only be able to access the orangeworld portal using a gprs/edge connection, it doesn't like umts it seems. Maybe someone with it stilll installed could try setting it up over a 2g data connection?
Sorry I can't be of more help, good luck =D
I used it when I first got my phone but it was pretty rubbish to say the least, google maps navigation is a much better product.
With Google maps navigation available, what's the point in sticking with Orange Maps providing you don't download more than your FUP permits.
I hate what Orange have done to this phone. The salesman on the phone even lied to me saying that they were using a generic ROM.
Are you sure you can't visit h**p://orangeworld.co.uk on a generic rom? Make sure you go via the Orange APN and not through a wireless network as that is not allowed.
I'm a bit confused by this.
My Orange Desire (I'm on panther) once charged first time, I tried to connected straight to the net and the phone seeked the settings and worked without any intervention. In fact I think it did it right at the beginning when gmail wanted to synch.
A few hours later I debranded, and upon reboot.. the same thing, was all automatic.

Orange Maps
You don't say but I assume yo're in the UK? FWIW I tried the Orange App and it wasn't a patch on the updated Google Maps with Navigation. It was sloooow and poor definition. So IMHO, forget it!
The commets about only connecting to Orange World through the 3G I can also confirm, but I have no idea why they'd want to do that...?
I agree use google maps navigation, coming from using TomTom on WinMo I prefer Google Nav, only thing I miss is the speed camera updates and custom voices, the google one is crap

"Map it" option is missing

Does anyone here found out that the map it function is missing from the "my windows phone" site?
I had found a similar issue with the thread below,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050891
but another question arise, how about those countries that are currently unsupported?
Like myself, in Malaysia while I cannot keyin my phone number now...
I can do that (Map it) before the official Mango update, but now... sad case... Just want to share with you all and to remind those who's country is unsupported to check it out.
On the left-had side, right below the image of your phone, there is a link with the text "Find, ring, lock, or erase your phone." Click on it and it'll take you to the mapping feature. It may be that your country isn't supported at the moment, however, since you were able to map it before, I don't know why you shouldn't be able to now.

This is the problems, the option is missing and from the thread I linked to, it show that you need to update the phone number to have this option, but Malaysia is currently on available yet, thus no luck huh?

Force updating to Tango - a warning

A lot of people have seen the links on WPCentral and WMPowerUser for force updating to Tango using the cab sender method.
I've been posting in that thread since yesterday and I'm seeing countless people messing up their phones by (a) not using the cab sender tool to make a backup before sending the updates or (b) not installing the language packs with the update or not installing the correct language packs.
The other thing people should be aware of is that for some people the update is removing INTEROP unlock. If you have a very recent Samsung firmware there may be no way to unlock again.
Tango adds very few features. Location awareness icon is not there. Export to SIM only appears to be there for a select few. Unless MMS is something that your life depends on, wait until more work can be done by the developer community analyzing what effects the 8112 and 8773 updates have on all the different phones & variations (carrier/unbranded) thereof.
EDIT: One user with a Dell Venue Pro has most probably irreversibly bricked his phone by applying the update.
If you want to force the update, try it:
http://www.wp7connect.com/2012/06/28/how-to-force-tango-update-on-your-device/
Worked for me. Needed two updates. The second one was 8773, then I received Nokia firmware.
i don't understand how those steps are able to work. if the wlan connection is killed while zune is searching for an update it returns a 'can't check for updates right now' error.
If you do it the right timing, it will stop the checking of the phone carrier etc. So thats something like
Connect to server > Check Atual Version > Check Last Version Available > Check if allowed to update > Update
When you kill the wlan, you are supposed to it exactly in the part that check if you are allowed to update. When it doesnt receive a response from server, it just update. Basically, you jump one step.
And it works perfectly. I've done this with Mango, now I done this with Tango too. Believe, it's not troll.
Another method is to count how much time it takes to answer you that your software is up to date. And then take 1-3 seconds off. That's when you have to disconnect. So you keep trying alternating the time you disconnect your pc.
thanks for the explanation of the sequencing.
i love wp7, and the lumia has been great...but i think it's a bit strange that updates are via zune software only, yet they stripped the marketplace accessibility functions from that same software making them ota only. sorry for the stray OT.

WP 8 is going to have OTA update. And a rumour that 7.8 too (I dont know what for. Will MS release updates after 7.8 to 1st and 2nd generation?). But I think the Kernel CE is the one to blame here. Its not a big problem for me. You will have like 2~3 updates in one year. That gives one update every 4 months or 6 months. I dont mind connecting my WP to computer.

on what carrier are you?
It worked for my carrier unlocked Samsung Focus.
At first I installed the OS updates (4), then I tried to install the 5 lenguages that my phone needed but an error prevented that, so after I tried to install only my main lenguage and it worked!
I agree, it's not really worth it, I use the MMS feature, but this cab update method it's not very stable in all phones.
I finally couldn't take the disappearing keyboard issue on my HTC HD7s. As far as I read, AT&Crap had no intention of providing that update, or Tango for that matter. I followed the steps for the cab loading updates and they worked fine. Haven't noticed any adverse effects for the past few days. Now I just bide my time until my contract ends so I can grab whatever decent WP8 phones that come out.
We've been doing force update thing from the Mango days. It's a easy process *IF* people follow the directions. It does work but, you must have the correct language packs/files to install with it.
It also could remove your Unlock.
If you READ THE DIRECTIONS and RE-READ THE DIRECTIONS, then FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS you should be fine.
It's people who are in a rush who brick or screw up their phone.

I read a few comments on wpcentral that AT&T people with devices such as the Focus Flash have received the update through regular means/disconnecting from network while updating method.

Anyone else experience this?
Tango on at&t Lumia 900???
So is there any confirmation that people are able to do the Tango update on the Lumia 900 on at&t via the disconnect internet trick? I've tried a couple of times and been unsuccessful. I don't want to waste my time continuing if it won't work.

Yep I only have pictures/video enabled, anyone knows how to enable voicenotes?
After several attempts finally got the prompt for update OS to 7.10.8112 however the update was unsuccessful!! Did it 2nd time but again the update was unsuccessful???
Not sure why it's doing this? If I cannot update to 7.10.8112 then I cannot update to Tango 7.10.8773.98
Has anyone else experienced this on unlocked European Titan? If it helps I'm currently on OS version 7.10.8107.79 and with Bootloader version 2.6
What is your free space on your:
a) PC?
b) phone?
Also it should say some error number.

Have enough space on my laptop more then 50g and have around 5.95gb of free space on my handset.
Yes there was a error code displayed but remember what it was? I'll try again tonight after work and post here with the error code.

I followed cab sender method, which seemed to work fine. However, I also do not have Voice Note, instead I have Ringtone.
Any ideas? How do we enable Voice MMS? Is it a Carrier-restricted aspect?
