Apparently, the battery life and the low internal memory are some major drawbacks of this otherwise great handset, so I though of putting up some experiences of what users report from their experiences with internal memory and battery life.
(After installing all programs and under normal usage)
ROM:
System 260MB => 32MB free
Data: 150MB =>32.7 free
Strategy: rooted, uninstalled htc stuff.
Battery Life:
24-36 hours
Remarks:
I feel the battery behaves rather strange, think there is definitively room for improvement. Some days, it hardly uses 5% over 12 hours!! Then, on others, without touching it, it looses over 50%!!
I am currently playing around with the Network settings and will see what I find.
Underclocking on demand should further alleviate the problem I hope!
With the original WF I easily got 4-5 days and the battery is only marginally smaller so should be possible to get closer to this range
Here my results:
About 50 MB free of ROM.
About 100 MB free of RAM.
Stock ROM, S-ON (waiting for htc unlock and cyanogenmod)
Battery lasts under normal usage 2 days, light usage 3 days. (When i sleep phone is in fly mode and there's no battery drain)
Normal usage: little browsing, messaging, mailing, music listening, checking news and weather, maybe a phone call.
Light usage: messaging, mailing, a bit music listening, calendar checking, very very little browsing
The biggest battery drain is the screen, especially when playing games (15 minutes dragon fly gives 10 % battery drain) and browsing, market checking/updating.
Everything stock:
free ROM: 47
free RAM: 122
Around 2 days battery use if I don't play too much Airport Mania 2, or else 10 minutes play equals minus 5% battery
UPDATE:
I changed some settings to maximize battery performance, notable
Location => Disable "Use Wireless Networks" (battery eater!!)
Wifi&Networks: Mobile Network Settings:
Network Mode: GSM only (OK I don'T need the fast one)
Enable Always-On: DISABLED
Plus I set it on Flight Mode during night (I used Gentle Alarm to do it before, but apparently there is a bug where it makes it consume engergy nevertheless so do it manually now for the moment)
Results:
For now, 3-4 days!
Will continue trying out (but now it will take a week or two to finish some cycles ;-) )
RAM : 241 free / 160 used
ROM : 70 free / 80 used
Cyanogenmod 7 / 1500mAh HD7 battery
1,5-2 days with fully wifi opened.
Sure you can kill 3G, WiFi etc but then why have smartphone and dumb it down?
Here are a few battery saving tips I've learned from owning a GSM Hero and Desire HD (my gf has WFS which is why I'm lurking here... just ordered a XTC Clip for it).
Unfortunately when the green light says you're phone is fully charged this isn't always the case. The battery is likely to be mis-reporting its capacity and % used, this can cause your phone to die when the battery still has remaining charge. So, we're going to fix that.
Assuming you have already rooted your phone, download Battery Calibration tool and CurrentWidget.
Place a CurrentWidget widget on your home screen and charge your phone until the widget says 0mA. This means it has reached fully capacity.
Once it hits 0mA on the widget, open Battery Calibration and wipe battery stats.
Reboot your phone whilst still plugged in and upon reboot it will recreate a new battery stats file, however now it will know the battery's max capacity and will correctly report battery % used.
I do this about twice a week. Maybe once a month I will also let it completely die and then fully recharge whilst off, before powering on and repeating the above steps.
Other things you can do to increase battery life are:
Change the sync interval of apps like Facebook, Weather etc. I usually set most things to every 3 or 4 hours, with Flickr only being once a day.
Don't run the screen at full brightness if you don't need it. On my DHD I find 40% to be best for most conditions, with only really bright sun making it hard to read... in which case I bump it up to around 75%. Auto-brightness if ok but it tends to be on the bright side on most Sense ROMs so hopefully someone will work out a way to tweak the values for WFS. I had a play about with custom values on DHD but after testing for a while I still prefer to control it manually. It's a personal thing though.
Remove crap you don't need. Stocks, News, eReader, Twitter etc are always the first to go when I install a new ROM. I use Root Explorer to delete them but there are various ways to do this including Titanium Back-up or by using ADB. You can find everything in /data/app & /system/app. Just be sure to do a nandroid backup in case you delete any system critical apks.
Change Wifi sleep policy to Never.
Limit your homescreen widgets to only ones you really need. Having 7 screens packed with widgets and apps will cause battery drain.
Turn off Power Saving mode. I tend to find it doesn't really help and just makes your phone quite useless when you hit the pre-set % where it activates.
Never use Task Killers. This link gives an excellent explanation.
Finally, wait in hope for an overclocked and undervolted kernel, different radios and custom auto-brightness values
If I can think of anything else I'll post it here
don´t know why so mutch people get worried about the battery. for me the only thing that counts is that the battry takes me over the day. i mean i go out an seven am and get bat at 5pm, so thats the time i need my battery to hold. maybe i need some backup to get until 22 pm and everything is alright.
for me i doesnt matter if i´ve to recarge after one day
Yeah, for some people it can become a bit of an obsession. However, it still think it's worth taking a few simple steps to get the best out of your device
For some people 8 hours between charges is fine. For me, I like a phone that can run for 8 hours between charges, but also run for 48 hours between charges (without having to go to dead mode by turning on airplane). I go camping, stay the night someplace else, forget my charger while going on a trip or just want the freedom of not having to find an outlet and drag my charger with me if I want to have a phone run for more than 8 hours. So I get off work, change my clothing and run out the door to my after-work sporting event, then head out for a few beers afterwards with the team and I barely have enough juice left to call my wife or check on a few game scores.
It's important. Not having it be important means your phone is running your life or you just always have the same routine, which is fine for you maybe but I like to head out.
About 7 hours running CM 7. Battery life is very bad at the moment.

the screen needs lots of power, processor needs to,
everything needs the power
look it is same like brand new commputer (whit very good graphic card, processor, memory, MB) - you need good and strong power supply without it is crap ...
if you need good long working phone buy something else like :hmm: i dont know what maybe NOKIA with small BW display
no offence
I noticed on the JPC the battery drains soooo fast!
did a full charge while the phone was off today and also deleted the battery stats.. lets see if it improves

I get 2 days of moderate to high usage with JPC. I think it uses less battery because the GSM signal is better, but the screen uses more power, is always over 90% in battery stats.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
For me it all comes down "display on" time.
if using 3G/edge i get 4,5h
if wifi then 5,5h (no difference if im using it during 1 day or 4 days)
JPC is same as JP3 or JMx
Screen brightness
Just thought I'd say, incase you didn't know, the web browser has it's own brightness setting. That could be killing the battery.
I, for one, already set the brightness to the first level for all aplications that have brightness setting, and still the display sucks the battey like crazy, at list with JPC. With other FW it drops even to 40%.

Battery drain was ridiculous with me. The first night I went to sleep I remember my phone was nearly fully charged, when I woke up at morning it had used around 50%... that is, 50% of the battery for around 6 or 7h just sitting in IDLE! When I actually USED the phone it could barely handle 10h with a full charge, and that's with very moderate usage. I had to leave the phone charing all the time to survive a day with it (charging in my car, charging every time I stopped near an AC outlet, etc). And yeah, the funny thing was noticing how exaggeratedly high the screen battery drain was, even though I wasn't using the screen all that much...
Some other symptoms of the high battery drain:
-Charging the phone took FOREVER with the phone being used, took a LOT of time with the phone sitting Idle, but if I turned the off the battery would actually charge very fast... that proved that the phone was draining so much energy even the AC charger (or USB outlet) couldn't effectively charge the battery while supplying power to the phone...
-The phone got HOT very easily...
How did I solve it?
Well, yesterday I decided I would reflash my device. I did a full reflash (as I always do) including a re-repartion. Now the funny thing that I noticed was that my phone actually wouldn't flash! It would always crash at the Galaxy S welcome screen... I have never flashed it using my notebook (since I'm traveling), but I used the exact same procedure I always use with my desktop back home, for some reason it wasn't working. Maybe some corrupt file? I re-downloaded ALL files (that is, Odin with the 803 pit file, and the JPC files)...
For my surprise, this time my phone hanged in a green screen, and it was really scary. I even thought perhaps the Nokia USB cable I was using was causing some kind of incompatibility problem, but that would make no sense at all... so I entered the recovery menu in my phone and reset EVERYTHING, and tried flashing it one LAST time (this time closing ALL background apps in my notebook, to avoid any problems)... and there it went, a perfect flash, as easy as they go with my desktop PC back home.
1st thing I did was a hardreset, and then I reflashed it again with Doc's RomMod V2 (was using V1 the day before), and new hardreset in the sequence. Then I changed as little as possible in the phone configurations, I just turned everything off (GPS, wifi, and even the data connection through the power button shortcut), and went to sleep...
For my surprise, the next day I checked the phone's battery use, it had drained only ~4-5% for more then 10hours, this means it would, at least in theory, be able to last for days and days in this setup...
So I installed my apps again (not that I have many), did lagfix, turned widgets and network connection back on... and it has been working like a breeze, although battery drain can still be considered high, it's nowhere close to being as bad as it was before I flashed it, now at least the battery will last a full day with a charge @ my standards of usage, that's good enough for me...
One thing I did change, I remember my screen setup was always at 10/30min for shutdown, I left it like that because I'm always using the phone in situations where the screen will constantly shut down at my face, and that annoyed me... well, this time I actally left the stock 30 seconds for screen shutdown, not sure if it has anything related, but one of the things I noticed before was that my IDLE battery-drain was as high as you'd expect from a phone that had it's screen on all the time... maybe some bug makes the phone drain screen power even with the screen turn off, let's say if you have the 30min turn-off config, your screen will continue to drain power for 30min (and there you have the reason for so much screen draw in the stats), even though the screen is turned off... despite my hardware knowledge telling me that a black screen should NOT be draining power from your phone battery, you never know how far a software bug can fck things up hardware-wise, so I wouldn't be surprise if that actually DID happen...
I could even try setting my screen back to 30min-turnoff just to check if the battery drain will go back to insane levels.. but the fact is that I'm scared of messing it up again, it's working fine the way it is, why mess it up? I figured out some things that get messed up with this phone appear to only get fixed with a new firmware flash, and I really don't feel like having to flash my phone every two days...
Either way, I hope others here can fix their battery drain... it's just my tip: try reflashing, leave everything as stock as you can (only thing I did was Doc's RomMod v2, and later Ryan ZA's lagfix, none of them seem to be related to JPC's battery drain), and see if it helps...
wth I can only get 3.5 hours max
Sent from my phone so excuse the spelling errors
After a week of using JPC I don't see any real difference in battery usage from the original stock rom and JP3, I charge the phone every second night ( battery is usually around 25% at this point).
My usage isn't that high, I have a couple of notifications running and a weather widget that updates hourly, its my alarm clock, my mp3 player to and from work (about 90 minutes a day), I make and receive 4-5 calls a day and send and receive a dozen texts a day, I check face book 3-4 times a day and on a daily basis someone gets a 10-15 minute demonstration of the beauty of this phone(note: don't let a taxi driver play with your phone whilst in heavy traffic, even if it gets a confession that it makes his iphone look like a piece of crap).
As far as screen time outs are concerned, I set mine at 1 minute but always turn the display off manually when I finish doing something with it including after I have started the music player (btw I use bluetooth headset to listen to music but not for phone conversations).
The highest display percentage I have seen is about 85% but the is usually tied in with using gps or browsing, on a day I don't use gps or browsing display is much lower, on a day that the display is pretty much off it drops to about 10-15% usage.
This phone is the first, of the several pda/smart phones I have owned over the years, that I haven't had to charge every day.
Id battery usage is not a problem for me on JPC, 8hrs idle ( sleeping ) and I still got 100% started to use the phone and it rapidly dropped.. now im playing a 2hr movie and see if i can get it to loop for 2-3 times before it shuts off.. if it reaches 6hrs then i would consider the battery usage the same.
Please turn off the GPS and a-GPS....
You will get a much better battery life.....
As I posted in another thread:
I am lucky to even get 12 hours with minimal use. No calls, just some texting and maybe browsing my bank website. Screen is always the killer for me, even on 20% brightness. If I go lower the screen actually flickers.
I bought the red HTC Chichitech batteries and they didn't help me at all.
Tried overclocking module, didn't change much.
The only app that ever shows any significant battery use (over 5%) is Maps, when I use maps.

I am rooted, S-OFF, using the Sense Modaco ROM. Battery usage was no better with the Stock Bell Rom before rooting or S-OFF.
My main concern is the screen flickering at low brightness. it's as if it's unable to decide on a specific level of brightness and makes me question if it's actually saving any power.
I set my phone to Auto brightness and I am going to see if that is actually worse of if it's on par with 20%.
Ugh - just realized there is another thread pretty much all about this. I thought it was a different issue. Still, does anyone know if there is a better batch of phones or something? I have a FutureShop warranty so it'd be easy enough for me to replace if it will actually provide a solution
No-one has posted anything, to my knowledge, about a different batch of phones having better battery life. I would check out the other threads about battery life (including those on the G2 side too) and see if you can get yours to last better. But it could just be something faulty on your phone/battery.
Auto-brightness would make it even worse..because there is some type of bug or something that isn't making it function like it should. I was also getting terrible battery life until I followed some of these steps: http://www.goodandevo.net/2010/05/20-tips-to-improve-htc-evo-4g-battery-life.html
Biggest killers are any widgets that are constantly updating..or facebook/twitter apps that are constantly updating. As well..i recommend SetCPU to underclock your phone when your screen is turned off. This should also help with conserving battery life along with some of the steps provided in that link.

The reason I want to try auto or higher brightness is to see if lowering it was actually saving me any battery life. I am curious if there's a driver or display issues that causes it to use the same amount regardless of the setting. So far I don't seem to be running out any faster @ auto than I was at 20%, but it hasn't been a long enough time to tell for sure.
Also I am unable to do the battery tip for the evo because once I turn off the phone and go to charge it again, it's instantly green. But I am going to try it anyway even though it's green.
Since writing the first post I used the OC module to get my phone to 1.2ghz. I have SetCPU set to run on boot with the onDemand setting. I have a profile that says to slow the CPU when the screen is off. From what I've read it doesn't make a ton of difference with this particular phone, but we'll see...

Yep, that's what I found too, when you try and charge it thinks it's already charged and goes green straight away again. But as you said, worth a try.
I just wanted to report back and say that I had my phone replaced. So far so good:
- No screen flicker issue at low brightness
- Battery has lasted nearly 20 hours with moderate-heavy use (played NFS Shift, setup basically everything on the phone after rooting, installed all my apps, backups, flashed some roms, 20+ texts, 3-4 short calls, showing people random apps.)
If it's not all in my head then this is definitely much better now!
Curious. It seems that everyone who reports the screen flickering problem has poor battery life.
Defective displays?
I feel my battery life is pretty bad as well. I've unplugged the phone this morning at 7 AM. Now it's 2 PM, and I'm at 37%. In between, the only things I've done are: send/receive a few emails and chat on gtalk. Brightness is at 40%, animations are turned off, wifi and gps location off. Using latest Cyanogenmod (6.1.1) and have no screen flicker issues
Edit: 17 minutes later, it's now at 27%
How long have you had the phone for?
Initially the first few days I got the phone, battery life was really bad, could drain in a few hours.
After a week or two of use, I now have reasonable battery life, the phone can last all day with light usage and still have lots of juice left. Actually I think if you make a few calls and a few txts, battery could last 2 days. If you play with it, one day for sure but you need to plug in over night.
(if you're talking to me) It's quite new, just picked it up on Friday actually. Also I've kept on researching, and it seems that poor coverage (like I have at work, from 7 til 3) tends to drain the battery even more, since the phone keeps switching between HSPA, 3G, etc.
I had my first one for about a month at least. This replacement was from Saturday.
Today I've had my phone unplugged since 8am, it's 5:30pm and I have 45% battery left, but the screen is the #2 user. Standby is #1 @ 40% of my battery usage, due to over 4 hours of time without a signal. The screen is only 24% and has been on for 48 minutes. Voice calls is #3 at 23% battery usage, with 23mins of calling.
My other phone would have died by now.
Also I spent an hour of streaming bluetooth audio to my car. Bluetooth doesn't even register on the battery usage. I've never seen it use more than 2% and it's always on. I am not sure why people say it uses a lot.
Just want to share my experience.
I too had poor battery life. Stock Bell ROM. Got to 3:00 pm and it used to die. Use this for work. Pushing data all day from Exchange server, bluetooth on all day because I'm in and out of the car, talk on average 30 minutes per day, texting, surfing, tethering, blah blah. Believe it or not, my old Omnia II would get me thru the day no problem.
I was also tempted to return it. But I decided to try a few things. Installed Set CPU and a task killer at the same time. Shut down as many tasks as possible on start up. Widgets and accounts, except Exchange-push, run and sync every hour. I get about 40% battery by dinner. I am happy now .
I'm quite happy with my Desire Z's battery life, It lasts for about 36 hours with moderate use. I have Juicedefender and Ultimatejuice installed, data or wifi are opened only when an app needs data connection, this increased my battery life by 10 hours or sth like that. Nice app.
I had terrible battery life until I went overseas. It is a stock Bell ROM, but I arrived in Spain Monday and am using a Spanish SIM card.
My battery life has increased from 14 hours with Bell's 3G signal to my current 27 hours and 35% remaining battery using GSM and WiFi always on. Funny thing is that no matter where I am it says the screen is by far my biggest power drain.
Where did you buy your Desire Z and how did you get it replaced? I'm with Bell and they would take mine to send out for "repair" but not sure if that will do anything. This will take 3-6 weeks apparently and I'm not sure if they it is worth it.
I'm running 10 hours with that I consider fair usage (few calls, text, map/gsp, and facebook.) My display is the highest battery usage at 60% and on for about 1:45h. I'm very disappointed.
Hey,
it's the same with my G2.
Max 24h.
I've standard ROM installed.
No WiFi.
Brightness to about 30%.
Juice Defender is installed and I'm surfing and just the regular stuff, but even if it's just in standby, it's taking a lot of power (display takes most)
Best!

I bought mine at FutureShop since I didn't think Bell would let me without buying at least a month of service (or being an existing customer). I also purchased FutureShop's extended warranty which is how I was able to get it swapped for a new one so quickly.
I use the extended battery for the evo. Lasts about 1.5 days with ass loads of use. Just have to trim the plastic edges a bit.

I have a couple of those red chichitech batteries but I wasn't able to notice any improvement with the problem phone.
My Desire Z also has a flickering screen at lowest brightness, and with moderate use it dies after about 12 hours max. Even on lowest brightness the screen ueses 59% battery. I rarely manage to make it through the day without having to charge the phone. Im on stock ROM with latest OTA (1.72) btw.
Gonna have it replaced next week just cause of the flickering screen. Has anyone tried the 1700mAH battery from seidio?
Hi
Had my phone a little over 24 hours and I may have a very poor battery
I have a LIVE screen on the one with the water and the leaves plus, I haven't made or received any calls but I have used it a little for internet and a few text messages
The green bar was on full about 5 hours ago and if I had to guess how long my use has been I would say 30 mins in total of the 5 hours, now my battery is indicating less than half full
Imagine if I was out all day making and receiving calls?
Does this sound normal?
This is normal for the first week or two , the battery is adjusting itself to your needs
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
It's absolutely normal and you'll really notice a difference in about ten days, a couple of weeks the most.
That said, live wallpapers do use more battery. I much prefer a static dark one
adding to that make sure your phones nicely drained before recharging to ensure you get a nice full charge for next time... i took my desire's battery at least 5 days to start having a long term charge
bettery
same here took a week also what really helped me is having advanced task killer and setting it to kill unwanted apps after i lock the screen
i dont think you should use task killer, the apps will end them selves, i used task killer and got alot of force close after and errors etc
however force stopping unwanted applications is also good.
Android system 30%
cell standby 25%
phone idle 17%
android OS 15%
Display 11%
Internet 2%
5 H 55M 55S unplugged, hahaha no joke its all 5's
and now my battery is almost dead surely this cant be right
has anyone ever been given a replacement battery for their phone or do they ask for the phone to be returned if this is infact a fault
Battery sucks, phone is power hungry. Get used to it
I've had 2 desires since a week after it was released, i can count on one hand how many times I've got through a day without plugging my phone in.
I get about 2 days on my phone if I don't mess around with it a lot or get many calls. I normally plug it on overnight. Every night.
Nowadays that seems normal for a smartphone. Personally I think the battery life is slightly better than the iPhone 3GS.
Angry Birds means it lasts about 4-5 hours...
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
It's all down to how your using your phone. If you have a live wallpaper and many widgets and apps that run in the background like running in the notification bar, then yes, your phone will die pretty fast. Also it depends on how much CPU your burning. When I first got my Desire, I was like WTF. This is useless battery life and was starting to play hell. Now it's fine. I can leave it for 2 days easily if I just text or flick through settings. It just depends on what your running.
BTW, no one should have a task killer. It defeats the purpose of Android. You can get a lot of force closes and other things. Just leave them alone and let the OS handle the apps. Android does end the process if it's idle, eventually, but it's not using anything really other than a bit of memory just to keep it going a little.
As GoogleJelly pointed out, it really does depend on what you do with your phone and what's apps/processes are running on it while the device is using battery. Even I found the battery life pretty poor at the beginning...I found it quite annoying having to charge this thing nearly every day.
After some light tweaking, I managed to get the battery life to go over 3 days and I now have no reason to complain about my phone Mind you, I'm not a heavy user....As for background apps, I think i've got about 5/6 apps running at a time...
EDIT: I've attached a screenshot of my battery meter.....
What app are you using to view your battey history?
I also tested task killer when I got my phone. I thought it was fixing battery life, but after bedding the phone in a bit I took it off to see how much difference it would make and I didnt notice any difference at all...

I configured Quick Battery app to go to battery history from my phone settings every time I tap on it. You can view your battery history through:
Settings > About phone > Battery use.
If you want the graph, just tap on the top layer which shows the length of time you've been on battery.
EDIT: This works for Gingerbread based ROMs (it's the standard feature lol)...can't remember this being on Froyo.

adding to that make sure your phones nicely drained before recharging to ensure you get a nice full charge for next time... i took my desire's battery at least 5 days to start having a long term charge

This is irrelevant with Li-ion as this is a myth from the ages of NiMh batteries. Your battery will not get ruined if you don't discharge it completely before first charging.

I configured Quick Battery app to go to battery history from my phone settings every time I tap on it. You can view your battery history through:
Settings > About phone > Battery use.

Ah right, cheers for that. Didn't know it was all built in
One of the main reasons why new smartphone owners experience fast battery drain lies in the simple fact that they fill up seven homescreens with widgets that sync over mobile internet every hour or even more often, which really kills the poor juice like a massive gas leak.
After about half a year of use I've reached a stage where I use just 2 screens on my Desire (CM 6.1.1), of which page no2 is a full 4x5 agenda and Page one has just one actively updated widget (home weather).
Combined with restricting network usage of random apps by means of DroidWall and underclocking the processor at certain parameters (eg. battery <50%) the phone lives for 2 days pretty easily, with moderate browsing, music etc included.
But TBH I've really decided that the battery usage is absolutely random because some days it just drains like there's no tomorrow with no apparent reason that I've been able to identify. Carry a spare microUSB wire tbh :/
I read so much myths in this thread concerning Li-Ion batteries.
First of all Li-Ion batteries do have instantly the capacity they are intended for. Even 5 charges won't change that. The only thing which can change over time and charge-cycles is your phone recognizing a new voltage level as "full" (read more: "calibrating htc desire battery") or you playing less with the phone or having power-consuming apps uninstalled.
Also a full first charge is not necessary. This "requirement" are from past days with NiCd or NiMH battery-types.

The calibration during the initial week or so of using the phone arises from phone-side calibration, not the battery itself, which is why deleting battery stats from recovery can at times resolve battery issues :V
Phone didn't last half a day after flashing CM 6.1.1; after a couple of days I charged it to 100%, deleted the stats and voila, it's about as perfect as a terrible smartphone battery can get.
Here's a thing that keeps bugging me - either i'm doing something wrong, or there's something wrong with my settings, or maybe it's defective battery or device, in the end (gosh, hope not).
So the problem is, running mb525 with xd11.2.5 (nordic .177 - based), VSel 300/22,650/32,100/52, stock battery, few if any "side" programs- basically Elixir and DroidWall.
a) I know people around do get 24+ hours from their Defy's, and by the look of the battery size it's OK. But I hadn't been able to get close to that, much less go "2 days" - battery go down in 12 hours of "ordinary use" or so.
Battery Manager always shows "mobile standby" as the foremost juice gnawer (50%+).
b) The ordinary use above is - wifi bt gps off 99%, data on 50% of time. I'd say it's very fair, and really expected to, as they say in spam mails, last longer All sorts of process monitors, task managers and killers absolutely fail to find any "rogue app" that could've been responsible (and I control those managers themselves pretty tightly, aswell). Other people running xd1 rom do not report same problems.
c) But that's not the worst of it. At times, my battery would really heat up. Not cannot-touch heat up, but, well, speaking my native Celsium, if the normal operating temp is 32-34, when it's "hot" Elixir would show 40, even 43. That's still far from scary, but not sure if normal either - noticeably warm to the touch.
Last two times it really heated was
- when i DLed a big (20mb+) app from Market over 3g - it took about 5 minutes and by the end of it back battery cover was seriously hot, 43 Celsium seemed accurate or even understated.
- while doing full nandroid backup in Clockwork recovery (heck, neither ROM nor VSel aint loaded yet!). Again about 4-5 minutes and 40*C, give or take.
Granted, I can't guarantee it's battery itself or something in the phone (core, anthena) spreading the heat, but net result is the same.
So, any idea what's the problem is and what should I do?
Any advice, similar experience and other helpful bits are greately appreciated. I fell in love with Defy bigtime, but quite honestly, 12 hours battery life is not something I can live with Especially when people are getting 48 out of the same device with the same battery
P.S. Might be a baseband problem as it's a UK-bought defy with Nordic ROM being run in Russia... but i've no idea how to check it out or fix...

Dude.. Try using another sim card and see if you see any improvement in the battery.. The sim card you are using might be old and may be the phone is not able to suspend it when it is in deep sleep mode..
It is normal for this battery to heat up when running different big things....3G ussualy causes it to heat up
I get 2-3 days....i dont know why you get only ~12 hours. When i bought this phone i "formated" the battery (some people say that is no needed for newer batteries) - charged it 3 times, each 8 hours (from 0% - when phone powers off itself to 100%)
If you are using Nordic version you SHOULD change your baseband (900/1800/2100 in Russia)

I kinda fail at it, asked in original thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052745&page=4 - basically it's either "850/1800/2100" called ChinaME722 1.10 or "900/2100" variants...
How do I check if the phone is "able to suspend or not"? I just got a just-pulled-out-of-holder-card new SIM card from my operator less then a week ago (old one wouldnt work with net access at all, for some reason).
Is it the same as SetVSel's "limit to vsel1 while screen is off" (which I have enabled the whole time), or a different thing?
Just today had another "controlled use", unplugged right with hte last post (e.g. 11 hrs ago, give or take), 1.5 hr voice calls total (2x of 45 mins), 1hr GPS on + data on for GMaps, 20 mins watching youtube via browser, the rest standby with everything off. 2 hours ago battery hit 30% where my VSel goes to "paranoid mode"(99% + vsel2 limit) and there it stays so far. Battery manager attributes 38% battery usage to "mobile standby" and 31% to voice calls.
^^tough luck
Have you tried watchdog? 3g also drains a lot try minimizing background apps to see if there are differences in the batt life. As for the battery, check if it is bloated or bulging. If it is then you need to replace it. If phone is still in warranty. unroot and have it checked out. Good luck
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
At one time my Defy got into a state similar to the one you describe; unaccounted by any measurements battery rundowns (in my case also excessive data use). Only a reset to factory settings (wipes and all) restored sanity to the phone operation.
____
Tapped into XDA app on Moto Defy
As wrote earlier, data/3g is completely disabled most of the time - batt drain still there.
I currently switched baseband to chinese 850/1900/2100 - will see if it changes anything. Also with some luck some people might just know the "correct" baseband to set for Russia (either here or in baseband svitcher topic).
Will give watchdog a try, but then again, i've been closely monitoring processes with tons of other stuff. Almost nothing's running (as I hadnt installed much yet). Plus the fact that "battery usage" gives foremost percentage to mobile standby hints the problem might be there, not in runaway app.
Had several wipes, if all else fails i'll try some different base ROM (e.g. not .177 nordic). Admittedly, I hadn't used anything else much so far.
And for "double tough luck", as said, friend brought Defy to me from UK, so getting is serviced it no easy task - if I find the battery to be in fault, might be easier to just order a replacement (or that Mugen extended one).
I still kinda hope it's some kind of settings/software/ROM glitch and not a hardware problem. The battery looks and feels OK most of the time - I would've definitely seen an obviously defective one. It charges and discharges pretty linear, any soft I tried that checks battery (such as Elixir or SpareParts) returns normal. Uptime not counting deep sleep and real uptime are different, hinting the device does enter sleep at times (no idea if properly).
Since I'm going to buy it today, I have some questions about Defy+.
1. Does it shoot HD videos
2. How's the display in sunlight
3. How's battery life under normal, non hard usage
4. Any known issues?
1. Yes, after applying the 720p patch and build_prop.
2. Display is ok not so bad. Under a direct bright sunlight always give you headache no matter how good the screen is.
3. Should be around 48hrs under normal usage, but can go further if lowering clocking and Vsel.
4. Earpiece breakdown. Should be fixed for the Defy plus. Still recommended setting the earpiece volume below 12.
Sent from my awesome Moto Defy: Stock Rooted Gingerbread 2.3.3 - XDA Premium
Ok, so I bought it - it's quite a nice phone. I little slow...
And here's my first problem - the market updated, and now I can't download any apps, except via WiFi. On 2G/3G - it starts and a "!" sign appears in the notification bar and nothing happens. Tried cleaning market's cache - no good?
Any suggestions?
Edit-data saver was On not used to that.
After one day of usage I have some more questions:
1. I've installed Sygic Aura and even though it's not running, in battery usage it says 98% for it, and 4 hours after unplugging the charger I'm on 90% without any heavy usage.
2. Considering the low battery life - is there a way, or rom, which is AOSP or deblured, as you say, and how to install it
3. As I didn't create a motoblur account, it says that I can't check for updates - is there a workaround
4. Even though I don't have a motoblur account, there are a huge amount of even foreground motoblur processes that obviously eat my battery
My previous phone was with a 1500mAh battery and lasted longer than 2 days. This one can't cope with 1, with the same usage....
More asking soon
after my adventure with the broken defy1 (defy minus) i should walk past the plus now,
but there is no other decent screen/ big battery/ 2.3/ and acceptable price,
there is the xperia ray, but its smaller and not rugged

There's a lot of ways you can tweak and customise your new Defy to maximise the battery life. Some stock roms came with no blur and some custom roms came with overclock enabled. 3G/2G selection too playing big role in battery consumption as well as having data background auto sync. And knowing which app you must remove/freeze permanently is a way to avoid them from silently running in the background.
And since it is new, it must take a few charging cycle of the battery before it can be deemed working in full capacity.
