Does anyone here think sprint can track if you were rooted???????
i also read someone's post said when they take your phone in to repair they have the technology to see if you ever been rooted even if you unrooted to get the repair.
but i dont really believe it

I'm sure that many carriers can check to see if you are rooted. Google is able to see if you are rooted, so why wouldn't carriers know? (Google is able to block movie rentals on rooted devices).
As far as the "technology to see if you unrooted", I am positive that they have no way of telling if you did such a thing. However, if you have some files on your external SD card such as removed Sprint apps, that's a dead giveaway.
Without getting out the tin foil hat theories, I'll agree and say it's possible... with a catch.
One thing: IF you are running a ROM that the device doesn't ship with, it should be easy to tell. If they can do that with simple over the air checks, I don't know or care.
Checking for the su binary. Several apps already do this (WoW Authenticator) and such. The presence of this binary alone is enough to tip someone off.
The bottom line is, who cares. It's not that big of a deal to carriers right now (so it seems). Just return the device to stock if you ever need service.

About a month ago I had to return my EVO to the sprint store, left it rooted, and they could of cared less if it was rooted or not.
For a while I think they allowed it... I can only assume they were trying to figure out how to handle the situation...
When I had called into tech... they said they would charge $125 for rooted devices... No idea. There's disclaimers everywhere... you do it at your own risk.
Sprint can't track your rooting/unrooting.
There's no way they know unless you tell them or bring it in rooted.

Go back and read that thread. There's also one here in the General forum just started today in which the OP says he's being canned because of rooting his phone. The background is he was also using a ton of data, and it may have been roaming data. THAT'S the issue. Root has nothing to do with it.
Whether they can or can't doesn't really matter. Sprint doesn't care if you are rooted. Yes, it voids your phone's warranty, but that's it. It's your phone, you can do what you want with it. And you can always unroot and bingo, you have your warranty back.
Due to an issue where my phone will randomly turn off on its own and not being able to turn it back on for an extended period of time or being able to charge it (I think it was it too humid an area for too long), I want to take my phone back to Sprint but am rooted. So, I ran the s-on tool and have been trying to get completely back to stock but haven't been able to completely because I can still see super user in the app drawer. What is the best way around this? I tried flashing 3 or 4 different PC36IMG from bootloader but continually got an error saying something about my version being older? I was finally able to flashed a rooted stock image but still see superuser and can't get rid of it! As a last resort, I decided I would just go to system updates and let it upgrade me to gingerbread. However, when I click on system updates/software update, it searches for awhile and then says there are no updates available!!! What am I missing and what is the best way to just plain start from non-rooted scratch????

If you have s-on, then you are unrooted. There is no need to flash a stock rom if you are already on one. The SU app can just be uninstalled.

That means you are trying to install a rom that is older than the one you have now. You probably need the latest version.

From what I have tried and read, you can't uninstall superuser. As an aside, I decided to accept the ota advice figured it was the quickest and easiest way to be sure I wasn't rooted. I don't mind being temporarily unable to reroot cause I'm sure a new method is close. Here's the weird thing though, I did the ota update to 4.24 and installed it, but still have Superuser in the app drawer! Wtf? I even did a factory reset but it still is there! How the hell do I get rid of that program!?

I believe he is already unrooted so this question doesn't matter lol. Some people don't read when invaluable advice such as yours is provided and they are left freaking out about the SU app.
Yes, I am unrooted because my local Sprint store checks for root. What makes you so sure it doesn't matter to sprint? So, can either of you answer my original questions?

Super User gets placed in the system/app folder so as far as the phone is concerned it's a part of the core OS and cannot be removed without root. It honestly should not be a concern. You just have Super User preinstalled for when we get root for 2.3 OTA.

It doesn't matter to Sprint because Sprint says so.
Just had my EVO serviced and I'm on Synergy ROM and got the phone back without any problems but a friend of mine took his in and got it back returned to stock unrooted so I guess depends where you go.
I read the PDF but don't see how that means sprint doesn't care. All I read is what sounded like sprint cs employees talking about policy. How is that official? Or am I missing something?

What was your phone in for, hardware or software? It's supposed to be that hardware issues (charge port, screen, buttons,, etc..) do not require that the phone bo returned to stock. On a phone with software issues we are supposed to return the phone to stock, run updates then troubleshoot. I know it blows getting that finely tuned custom ROM/Kernel wiped but the devil you know is better than the devil you don't.
Now I personally will not flash a customers phone back to stock unless there is no other option but will generally start with a wipe to clear any crap out of the phone. Then again, when I was working with teamwin and orrebmas I was rooting/unrooting and flashing all the major ROMs as many as 10-15 times a day so I'm a bit more familiar with custom ROMs than most techs.

As a tech I can verify that for one, only Sprint employees have access to that forum and the service subforum from which that came is for ASC techs. Second, almost the entire thread was techs complaining about why should they service rooted phones for free. These are the same people that claim there is no way to be sure if a phone is rooted.
OK, now I see, I didn't realize you were a Sprint tech. Anyway, you know my situation, what would you recommend? What could be causing my random shutoffs related issues? Also, I've only had the phone since March. Is my issue covered by warranty? I don't have insurance

Thermal shutoff bug: If the phone gets to hot it will shut off and not turn on til it's cooled down. The sensor can get out of calibration and require lower and lower temps before it will boot. The worst case I have personally observed was a phone that needed to be below freezing before it would boot. This bug will also cause the charging circuit to not charge (it thinks it's too hot).
In a room that's no more than 75deg Fahrenheit turn on all the radios and run neocore interactive mode. Let it run for atleast an hour. If the phone shuts off immediately check to see if the kickstand is hot. Now I don't mean warm but hot. If the kickstand is not hot then your phone's temp sensor is out of calibration and requires that the phone be replaced. This is a known issue or "Device KIS". If the phone is within it's one year warranty there is no charge for the replacement. If the phone is out of warranty it is up to the discretion of the tech and/or manager to assist you in getting it replaced via Authorized Exchange or "AE".
I ran through the program as you suggested and the kickstand wasn't hot and didn't power cycle at all. Then what?

I have three Sprint stores in my area. Two of them are managed technically inept managers, one of them is managed by a techno-god, I don't know what he's doing managing a Sprint shack but so be it. I talked to him about rooted Evos and he said that the other two stores don't check for it because they don't know anything about the concept of rooting. But HE DOES because it's hard to guarantee a repair on a rooted phone. According to him, it's up to the store's management and also up to Sprint. They don't necessarily check for "root" but if servicing a phone requires a software update, they're going to use a stock RUU and voila! That was my experience.
So i've been spending a couple of hours over a couples of days trying to unroot en relock my phone.
I had some USB problems and Charging issue's So i wanted to return it in stock..
But Like I said my USB didnt work so I decided to take my losses and just return it, rooted with Superuser installed.
after Explaining my situation the Tech Guy from my Carrier Tells me...
O you have rooted your Phone. Well that might be a problem with the insurance... unless you got a Nexus Device.

I was in Sprint yesterday asking them about the newest radio for the JB build (I was having issues with a backup I made and having old radios preventing me from getting the JB OTA update). Anyways, the guy asked why I would need to know about the radios and I played dumb as to why I wasnt updating. My phone was relocked and unrooted but he picked up on it and said he wouldnt even touch the phone to give me help as modding the phone voids warranty. I was able to figure out on my own and fix it but they were pretty strict on the rules.
You're lucky man!! I asked in a shop and they said that I'll lose warranty. What carrier??

You can still have a valid warranty if you are rooted, but it depends for what you a claiming damages. If your power button stops working, that has nothing to do with root, they will just repair the button or give you a new model. However, if you call up your carrier and say something about your phone not turning on, then they might deny you coverage if they find out your phone was rooted/flashed

Reread what you posted, your first sentence and last sentence kinda contradict each other. Also, all I am talking about is rooting, not hardware failures, not water damage.
You should read the pdf I posted, they cannot deny you warranty just for rooting. Individuals may give you problems because they do not know Sprint's own policies, but if you escalate you should eventually find someone who knows what's what.
Oops I had it mixed up thanks for clarifying. Hardware problems can be fixed rooted as long as they don't check. If its something root related then no. Always best to return to stock everything and if you can reset flash counter.

Last year when I bought my Galaxy SII, I forget what I was asking the guy at the T-Mobile store but he suggested I root it (planned on it anyway), he rooted all his phones, and I shouldn't have any problems if I have to return it but if I do to just go back to stock first.
I've had my phone for roughly 15 months. It has been my first foray into Android and I absolutely it. What I don't like is TouchWiz. It makes the phone a hassle to use because of how slow it runs. I've heard rooting makes a phone faster but I've always been hesitant to root it because of how it voids your warranty. However, since I'm eligible for an upgrade come February so I figure I should root my phone to experience rooting. I don't want to do it if it prevents me from getting a new phone.
Can anyone help me out here?

you can always unroot your phone and im pretty sure that if you are eligable for an upgrade that they arent going to search your phone, more than likely is they send straight to factory and just flash it and send your phone to people who broke theirs lol
just saying from what i heard of, but you can root your phone and unroot if you want to experience how it is to have a rooted device, my phones een rooted for about year and a little more than half, soft bricked so many times but thats the fun part

Don't phone carriers have a way of knowing if you've rooted your phone in the past? The last thing I want to happen is to be told that I have to pay full price for a new phone after having it for like a week.
Straight from t-mobile website:
"As long as the phone you're trading in powers on, is not cracked, and has no water damage, you only have to pay a down payment for the next phone when you’re ready to upgrade."
At the same time it also mentions this:
"Once the used phone is received at the Trade-in Center, it will be tested and inspected. All personal data and corporate IT policies will be removed."
I would recommend reverting to stock first.

I've upgraded a few phones that were rooted and had different Roms I just flashed to stock and didn't even unroot they didn't check but might wanna just in case lol plus custom recovery is kinda a give away lol

I've heard that if they find it rooted, even if it is a big IF, they are able to void the warranty. Don't think anything it matters for an upgrade though. Either way, they probably won't check it, and even if they do, I don't think they will do anything about it. You can always go back to stock to be safe.
I heard for the Note 3 they are adding a detection hardware that cannot be undone once rooted, even if you go back to stock. These kinds of things are made for people who like to find ways around them though, and these people usually win.

Hey guys, so I just went to a tmobile store to trade my phone in on the Jump Program and the associate said I'll be right back I have to scan your ID and hook your phone up to my computer for a second. He returned a moment later saying that my phone was not eligible to trade in because his computer said my phone had been rooted or jail broken. He asked if I had rooted it and I lied and said no. Now I didn't remove the root or TWRP from my phone because I never ever had them check all I did was restore my TWRP backup I took of stock when I first rooted my device. I am baffeled. I had no clue they were even doing this now. Anyone have any experience with this? I am going home to completely unroot and then go to a different store and try again. Are the carriers getting this smart now? I searched but hadn't found any similar experiences

The phone rooted or not shows with "MyTmobile" app under "device management". You will see a warning about the device is no longer secure. So yes, Tmobile knows. TWRP tripped the Knox warranty to 0x1. So unless you could find some unexpirienced csr even the warranty is voided.
Some say it doesn't matter but it does now for Tmobile.

Yes they do have system apps that spy on device status and some other thing but that's another story. Its not just their apps but the system apps located in the app manager under all apps. You should notice that there are 3 apps(system that will auto start even if force closed and can not be disabled/removed unless super user access. Also log you GPS coordinates and more. Should notice a jump in CPU and mabile data usuage upon unlock/lock and power on/off/reboot. Logging with/out data enabled. And funniest is ota patches for tether exploits or data hack/mods but still not chance of getting a simple android update ota lmao. As for warranty least jump/replacement so far hasent effected it on me end probably because how much their making on these phones now since the manufacturers been cut out lol. Could change I'd flash the ota before either jumping or replacements is possible.
Forced me to root.
Right, of course, TWRP tripped Knox. So they're checking, be advised. Root only without tripping and don't run a custom recovery.

Was able to replace my note other day but had to install Ota and stock recovery. Side note I also downgraded back to Ota kk from lp no issues. Least this time. Set up was Ota this time. But on note 3 had custom rom lp but had hidden su binary temp, and hid su and other apps from being seen by Android via search bar and install devices. Oh and never had installed/updated or enabled any tmobile Knox or lookout apps. Device status stayed official offlinedevice) and online under device status. Even with xposed installed(status fix) no issues. But again have to hide stuff and never allow their Spyware aka device manager(the main issue) lookout kies and knox. Can try and see if u downgrading from lp to fix/reset knox. Since then system updated and noticed harder to keep them from spying.
Ps never do the device diagnostics. Smh data mining with a pinch of Spyware lol. Still track your things when you opt out but least your have a legal way to sue if we get chance. Opting out don't mean crap sadly. Thought Google put an end to bloat ware and mucking up android after they released lollipop. But ig we still can dream for that day
Ps Ps twrp was issue for knox being tripped people lol is when you root device and/or install rom/recovery. Thank Sammy for charging 600 or 800 then voiding warranty when you do decide to root device(I did simply to fix stuff broken in lp and the ton of cap Sammy messed up or deleted)

Yes, Knox was tripped but that wasn't the issue. I ended up calling my friend who works in a T-Mobile store and explained the issue to him. He said " yeah we have a computer in the back that we can hook your phone up to and check if your rooted or jail broken but I have never heard of anyone actually using it! He said to remove root and custom recovery and go to his store. He said they won't check at my store but just do it to be safe. So I went home and odin flashed back to stock and went to his store. His store did it in 10 minutes no problem. They didn't even take it into the back like they did at the other store.
Lesson is that it depends on what store you go to. They have the capability to check but if they do or not depends on the store. Also the guy at the original store said that his machine would know if it was rooted even if it was undone. Don't know if this is true or he was bluffing lol. Just wanted to share my experience with the community.

Umm, first things first, never let anyone take your cellphone out of your sight to "check" it. I don't care if you have nothing to hide on that device, that is not proper procedure for any cell phone store. That dude was most likely looking for nudes on your phone while "in the back", and if there were any, you can be sure they're now in his possession. Not to mention he probably read through most of your texts, since that's where the nudes would most likely be.

Thanks for the concern But I was going to tmobile with the intent of jumping to another phone so I had already factory reset to wipe all my data before going to the store. This is my regular practice.

That's all well and fine, but it doesn't change the fact that they should never have taken the phone "in the back" out of your sight for any reason. The time I Jump'd a phone, they gave me my new device and a padded envelope to send in my trade-in, they never took my old device from my possession.
This is new, never happen to me, I just go and trade for new devices. I guess it's difference now.
