Anyone know when roll on on Ice Cream Sandwitch for arc 'll start ?
i dont want to exactly date , but maybe month ?
First Google has the release 4.0, then SE can bring it to our Arcs.
Rumours say it'll be before christmas but I'd say Q1 of 2012, maybe february.

any official news about this ? some from se blog ?
and when google release 4.0 ?
It would be nice to get the update. Rumor has it ICS has great Memory Management which increase the battery life. I read somewhere On Moto Xoom it had a battery life of 70hours.

i heard the xperia nozomi (se 2012 flagship) would be release on march 2012, and will have ICS. so i think ICS will come out before that. maybe by the end of the year, or on christmas
but, i'm still not sure if our lovely arc will get ICS update too
I look forward to this new version of android
its been confirmed arc will get it.

Wasn't there an agreement by all manufacturers to support devices for 18 months after launch? Including providing the latest android version etc.
I think that was during the Google I/O conference or something similar. [I could be wrong].
I'm a Ice Cream Sandwich lover! I want it release faster!

Well, according to this source a Sony Ericsson representative was quick to reply saying that all 2011 Xperia models will receive the Ice Cream Sandwich update. The quote was quickly retracted to an official statement of:
"When it comes to future platforms of the Android OS, we will make them available to consumers in a timely manner, as long as they improve the user experience and are viable from a hardware point of view."
I'd say Ice Cream Sandwich will greatly improve the user experience, and should be working fine on single-core processors as Android hasn't fully migrated to the dual-core world yet. Good chance?
As the Arc S is about to be released running 2.3.4 I would be amazed if it did not get bumped up to ICS. I mean that would be really bad of SE not to update that phone. I can't imagine it would take one of the talanted devs on here very long to port an Arc S 4.0 ROM to the Arc even if SE do not officialy update. So we will get it. Well, thats my opinion anyway.
Ice cream shud be too heavy for the 1GHz processor like Arc.. except the DoomLord had succesfully make the kernel overclock perfectly gonna be awesome !
ICS is supposed to be lighter than Gingerbread, and by the way Nexus S is also 1GHz and it works fine there - http://www.gsmarena.com/ice_cream_sandwich_gets_leaked_on_video-news-3199.php

Agreed - dunno where everyone gets this idea that each release of android gets slower - it actually keeps getting faster.
It does however tend to get larger with every release, so the limiting factor tends to be availability of internal storage - and even this only becomes an issue when large bloated UIs are bolted onto the OS (e.g. HTC sense on the Desire).
are u sure arc can update to ICS???
maybe ICS only for Tablet or smartphone with Procie dualcore, like honeycomb is only for tablet
we'll wait and we hope arc can update to ICS

In Q4, 2011, Google intend to combine Honeycomb for tables and Gingerbread for smart phones into one universal OS. Ice Cream Sandwich.
Developers will be able to account for all form factors within this same version of the OS. This seems to be the end of the OS fragmentation that has plagued the Android system since its release! The announcement has been made around the same time that Windows Phone manufacturers Microsoft announce a universal OS in the form of Windows 8, and Apple's iOS5, which means universal operating systems are the way of the future. But the question is, will the Defy get some?

no way man! telus just released a version of the defy a couple of months ago.we've got at least two more years of love coming!
i am hoping as well... but here in indonesia, not even gingerbread
There's absolutely no point in getting excited till there's even confirmation of getting Gingerbread.
Right, Q4 huh... so that's end of the year. Then add a few months of delays and small scale release, that's mid 2012. Then add a year on that for motorola being slowpokes with new releases.... that's mid 2013. I don't know about you, but as much as I love my defy I'll probably be having a new phone around then rather than getting excited over what will at that point already be old news.

Man you said the right situation in motorola process , BUT even if they didn't release it for defy , they might unlock the bootloader, like samsung galaxy S2.
tAKE lOOK Here:
Samsung Sends Free Galaxy S2 To Hackers For Inspiration
According to the company, it has already sent a free Galaxy S2 to the CyanogenMod team as part of the plan.
http://www.itproportal.com/2011/06/13/samsung-sends-free-galaxy-s2-hackers-inspiration/#8
so i hope we can wait for something cool later time.
It's still possible, when CyanogenMod 8 comes...
Maybe this?
Ok so maybe Motorola will launch a new Defy. This time more powerful. So we will buy it and have that with running Android 4 and this one as an old phone with CM version of the new Android tweaked for it.
I personally use 2 phones. Primary smartphone Defy and secondly a phone only Nokia (no camera, radio, internet). But i would like using 2 smartphones. Actually that is the future. So in my case i can wait for a Defy2 and than keep this as well
Keep in mind that a smartphone's life is somewhere between 2-4 years. Battery/hardware and software wise . But who knows the Defy can prove even more resistant ....

The current fragmentation issue has nothing to do with Tablet and Handset form factors. I understood fragmentation is about manufacturers putting too much layers on top of OS to make their own version of Android i.e. Sense, TouchWhiz, Motorla, and so on.
User experience is a science, now imagine how much damage these manufacturers do to an OS that no one would want to learn how to use them. That is why many people would want to use handsets from the same manufacturer. Android introduced a new market and after few years everyone involved realising the cons and pros of it as no one had the experience working in such market model before.
My prediction is... Most manufacturers will give up putting their own layers for three main reasons:
1. Manufactures eventually can't catch up with the progress of Android's development and it would become a complex and expensive process to have.
2. The cost of hardware will significantly will be reduced, that means smaller manufactures giving stock Android start stealing market from the big boys.
3. Future Android versions would become rich in user experience that the cost of putting layers on top of already a rich interface is no longer justifiable.
and hopefully with this, release of OS will be much faster due to the more vanilla usage of Android instead of each company spending time and money on 'fragmenting' the OS....and devs like the MIUI and CM guys (plus all the other solo devs) can start porting it over much faster and easier.....and leave the fragmenting and customising to the community!
true
but if each developer releasing their own os like miui and cmd and etc you will never have stability in the os.
thats why i always stick to the official os.
((consider Camera issues and AGps fixes plus notworking parts in os properly))
Ice Cream Sandwich will be released this October/November.. There's even a Nexus S shipped on EBay which has ICS!!!!! Here it is!!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3Pb6IyFvfg&feature=player_embedded
I'm really hoping to see it on Motorola Defy!!
Btw I noticed that all Android versions have a codename based on deserts..
Cupcake 1.5
Donut 1.6
Eclair (a cake) 2.1
Froyo (frozen yogurt) 2.2
Gingerbread 2.3
Honeycomb 3.0
Ice Cream Sandwich 2.4/4.0
lol
I think there will be a custom rom, but i don´t think we get it official.
Sorry for my bad English!
Julian
I don't think T-Mobile US Defy owners will ever see an official Gingerbread update, or anyone else for that matter.
Why would Motorola put one out when Defy+ is here? Defy team was moved to working on Defy+ long ago, that's why we still have a buggy official Froyo. They're just not working on Defy any longer.
They re-released the Defy calling it a Defy+ for the sake of a Gingerbread update. What makes you think they wont do the same for ICS. And ofcourse the Defy wont even get Gingerbread forget ICS.

there is no question of getting official GB update in future. But I m sure there will be CM8 for defy
Anyway, CM8 sounds way better than a crappy ICS released by Motorola .
cannot w8 4 the ICS . even if our defy will not get an ICS update i'll buy a new phone

Incorrect, All phones with Gingerbread computability can run ICS. Also EVEN IF "Sony Ericsson" DOES NOT upgrade us to ICS, once the source is released for ICS, custom ROMS will start appearing on the community within days, possibly hours.
oh right, YAY!!!
Yeah CyanogenMod is very popular with customRoms. The last version of CyanogenMod is CyanogenMod 7.1 which rapresents Android 2.3.7.When Android 4.0 ICS is launched keep searching for CyanogenMod 9(Android 4.0)xperia Play.Pls reply if I helped.Gd luck.
P.s.It s a bit difficuilt do install it.
I don't think I'll ever unlock my bootloader. I just don't feel the need to as I really love the stock launcher and the games I play don't require overclocking. So I put my faith in SE for delivering ICS to our devices as they have said they will. Flashing it with flashtool as soon as it comes out!
Faith alone won't sustain us anymore...
Lol, the rumours are ICS will be released january/march according to an employee

Calm down, boys, we all very well know that official Jellybean won't be on our phones that fast. It's Sony, so we have to wait(thanks to CM, no more. After CM I see little reason to use stock). We saw news about early november/late october, now it's december, after december it will be january, and some site will yell OMG EXPARIA S IZ OPTODET TO JILLYBEAM!!!!111111
No, it won't happen before the time Sony decided. They won't just say "Hey guys, let's make a surprise" and release JB.
Hi, I'm currently still using stock rom on my xperia s. Is CM really such a huge difference? And which CM should I take? (CM 9 or 10) Thanks!

Yeah, that made me mad a bit... I mean I love the camera and the screen of the XS but since ICS it's a piece of garbage... Losing focus, music stutters, no quick launch for cam, network drop out, random slowdowns, home screen redraw, etc... Last sony for sure... I'll try to enjoy it until it dies and then either a Nexus or WP. Enough of Android's fragmentation, late updates (if any), childish UI on other manufacturers roms, etc. I'm looking forward to see if JB improves anything but so far from what I saw on other devices (mainla cooked rom's however, it won't). We'll see (or not)

Hello guys! I was wondering today why that annocement hasnt been considered here on Xperia S forum, while it makes such an impression on Xperia Z forum. Its all because of http://blogs.sonymobile.com/2013/07/25/on-android-jelly-bean-4-3/#more-9209 . It clearly says: "We’re also looking at uplifting some of our other devices running 4.1 direct to 4.3 – we’ll share more info / deets / timings when we can, so be sure to follow @sonymobileNews for all the latest.". Guys i got used to it that you owners of XS should actually be full of hope and pleasure hearing such words, but unfortunately you always blame on news that type, so please make exception this time and try NOT to blame on me for sharing this great news (yea, ive been here around for year with my lovely xperia s but i switched to xperia z a time ago)

We all know that our device will only get a JB Bug Fix Update and that's it, no more official updates.
Please, close this thread before some "I HATE YOU SONY", "I'M GOING BUY A NEXUS" appears.
Anyway, I'm going to buy a Honami at the end of the year, so I don't care.
x10 reloaded? skip x.2 and give x.3 would be too nice, but a proper 4.1 update would do the job as well.
A smooth non buggy 4.1.2 is perfect enough for me.

One reason some old devices had so much development was the fact all the source code was available. Now Qualcom is unlikely to give the source code to the dev community but Sony may be able to so this could come to the S3 chip devices. Yes I am being optimistic but it could happen and would help Sony establish itself in the device world. I just wish they would focus on less devices and create some really good phones with a longer life span. I don't get the concept of build 12 devices every year. It seems you could build four and cut more cost in parts and save a ton in development cost.

Yea, Ive got the same situation in my mind as I was an owner of x10. Most of you guys dunno that x10 was running 1.6 then 2.1, then was said to be by SONY not efficient to run properly 2.2, but then they realised that it can run 2.3 smoothly- it was highly unexpected by anyone. Also x10 as i remember at first wasnt capable of using multitouch, but SONY also here surprised us and came up with multitouch few months after x10's release. I would say that most companies cannot afford to update every portfolio smartphone thay have with every android update i mean 4.0.X->4.1.X->4.2.X->4.3.X, but some of them are able to skip minor updays only for major one and so they do.

HTC removed One S from their Android 4.2 update list because some models were with S3 processor.
There are very, very low chances (almost nonexistent) for official Android 4.3 for our Xperia's...
And that is not so much of Sony's fault, it's more Qualcoom... however, Xperia S had older processor even at the time of its launch so at the end it is Sony's fault
Guys, we have good 4.1.2 ROMs, some excellent and always progressing 4.2.2 ROMs, it is not so dark as you guys present it

I'm guessing this thread has really said what 's got to say and those that have mentioned OpenGL ES 3.0 have really put the nails in the coffin on Android 4.3
Isn't there a thread in the general section dispelling even Android 4.2 updates from Sony for the XPERIA LT26i?
If Sony do a bang up job of getting this puppy to fly on Android 4.1.2, what more could we expect of a Snapdragon S3 MSM8260 chipset anyway.
And at the end of the day when the sun sets on the XPERIA S we have a bevy of excellent XDA developers that'll make sure the wheels don't fall off our trolley that is the XPERIA LT26i.
My XPERIA X10i (64GB MicroSD, 1.15GHz CPU, 1800mAh battery) is testament to that.

And I agre with you 100% for whenever to buy S or not. I just wanted to say that Sony decided which CPU will they put into their devices. They have chosen older generation. They didn't knew how long will Qualcoom support it and I think they didn't think they'll put som much time into upgrading 2012 Xperias.
But, to say Sony is completely innocent for not being able to provide 4.2 or 4.3 to Xperia S - I disagree.

How is it Sony's fault Qualcomm didn't provide the CPU drivers? Xperia S is the first flagship of the ships launched early January. Hello everyone ;
i just read an article stat that old phones with weak memory 512mg didnt get any new updates but this could be changed with new android !
it says that and i copy from it : ' One important feature will be the ability of low memory models to update to newer builds of Android. Low memory handsets made by Huawei, Samsung and ZTE that have 512MB of RAM inside, are at a major disadvantage to today's mid to high-range models that are packed with 2 to 3GB of the stuff. These low memory models usually are not updated to newer builds of Android. That could change with Android 4.4. '
idk but i guess if they did it it will be such a great news for old beloved old devices like my xperia ray !!:fingers-crossed:

I think 4.4 will just run good on low-end devices and it might be easier to port to those devices. But I'd wager quite a lot that Sony isn't going to bother with our phone anymore, 18 months have passed and they have dozens of other devices to support.
No Qualcomm support - no official 4.4 for our devices, get over it. We can only hope to get KitKat beacuse of Letama or Rayman.

Letama doesnt have a XS anymore however ,soon enough i will be taking over letamas 4.3 project and just maybe i may be able to port 4.4 to xperia s. I assume RaymanFX will build 4.4 via CM10 it seems like he always has
also sony has compltely abandoned these old devices, most of the contracts end next year but sony dont care enough to even look in this direction.
they dont even care about the Xperia Z and more, then again cant blame them, they are almost bankrupt again :/
try to keep your hopes up , although xperia S is a orphan we have got some great devs
No KitKat 4.4 for Galaxy Nexus.

I don't really think there would be anymore support or anything as such for SXS.. SONY has and completely will abandon SXS.. Already as Envious said SXZ is also old now and will soon be obsolete in another year.. Tech keeps on moving guys, everything gets old.. U just gotta live with it..

Since Galaxy Nexus even is abandoned, then Why are there rumors in the first place.. Its so confirmed that they themselves have said its OLD and crossed 18 months.. So i guess old in their words mean basic low end budget devices.. Its like in "Pink Panther 2" where the HERO does both Good Cop Bad Cop Routine all by himself.. :silly: And still we gotta accept it..!!! Don't get any hopes up YET guys..
I dont think any old device will get 4.4 unless its a part of some new licence
I guess its good for old devices to run newer android , 4.3 is extremely smooth compared to 4.2 and 4.1 (on xs)
Speaking of which
The first thing im trying to fix with letamas 4.3 build is the HDMI and the graphics crashes and errors
Just waiting for source code

Someone please tag raymanfx.. I can't do it as I am on tapatalk app.
Kitkat is the way to go.. may be the best thing that can happen to xperia s and above all it features the much hyped screen recording feature out of the box as displayed by koush for CM.

@RaymanFX This is the source to 4.4 already.. I hope this helps.. Thanks to @fundoozzz.. :good:
Not gonna happen guys. Xperia S is pretty much EOL. I will be getting my new phone tomorrow. So I'm ready to leave this place
4.4 Will not be given by sony as the phone is now classed as "discontinued" and is a archived sony phone. I don't know if the end of support for updates has been done yet if not they can update it but very unwilling because they have lots of newer phones.
Most likely a developer will port it over
The only thing that I'm concerned of is, will it run smoother than other ported JB ROMs.

It definitely should as according to google it will run smooth on devices with mere 512mb of RAM.
The major challenges is hacking the code for our soc as it has been discontinued by arm too..
If Google is not upgrading the Galaxy Nexus, why are you hoping Sony will not do the same?
