Am I the only one - Windows Phone 7 General

Am I the only one who thinks that Microsoft is doing really well with the platform? They launched last year have had one issue (with the Nodo update) and are already ahead of schedule on there Mango update.
To me honestly my Dell Venue Pro looks better then my brothers android phone it may not have as many features but it has all I look for in a phone. I just don't see why everyone is complaining so much :s?
Oh and if I have missed something about the platform please tell me

No, you are not the only one.
I had WP7, then some friends tried to persuade me to pass to Android, i used it for a month until I trow it out of my car window (It was a Nexus One, so exactly the same hardware as LG E900 I was using and I am currently using).
Far too bored from system lockup, too much energy consumption from the OS an applications, Android is just a bunch of buggy software.
Now back to WP7 and breathing again, no need to travel with battery charger, fast and reliable os...

What kind of battery life do you get on wp7? I get around 10 hours while my android phone usually gets 26-30.
For all the strong points on wp7 battery performance is not one

I have to agree with this. My Focus is horrid for BL. I have all syncing set to manual and even deleted all apps that required syncing data except the weather app. My Focus, not being used, will drain the battery in less than 2 days...remember, I said not being used...the screen is always off, the sim is out and the wifi sleeping.
My Androids are much better. Even my HD2 with Android lasts several days with mild usage. My iPhone is unmatched, though. It just lasts and lasts. I can go a week with mild usage and still have 75% battery.
MS needs to focus on the BL.

Totally disagree, I have the 1.3 focus and have no problem getting through a 12 hour work day with moderate to heavy use.
I think comparing Android battery performance to WP isn't a direct comparison since Android runs on a plethora of different hardware with different battery sizes, cpus, gpus, etc, etc... WP has what, less than 10 models currently on the market?
Although that's soon to change.
I do know this for a fact: My colleague had a Samsung Infuse and her battery wouldn't last 8 hours. Returned it for an iphone cause the Mango wasn't even close to RTM at the time.
That's probably because her battery is 1400 mah and mine is 1500 mah. Also her CPU is 1.5 ghz and mine is 1.0 ghz.. After that, then the OS would come in to play.

No, and millions of others including myself think it's doing well too.
But remember, there's a lot of money at stake and people will do/say anything to try to stop their camp from potentially losing any market share.
Be patient. MS has some very big things coming. It's a long term plan, and time will reveal it. And only then will the doubters finally see what's going on.
But the haters, there's nothing that can be said for them except please leave this forum and keep your nonsense to yourselves.

If you are basing your assumption that you are the "only one" off of the forum posts on XDA (or on any forum really), don't.
Its a well known fact that complaints are much louder than praise. But the number of people complaining is minute compared to the many others who are too busy using and enjoying their phones to bother with any forums.
Especially here on XDA, where one of the reasons we're all here is because we see something that could be improved or better, and we gather here as enthusiasts and developers to make those improvements. Its only natural that these improvements are based off of complaints that people make here.
Its not a perfect platform, but then again, no platform is. And for being only 1 year into the platform, its doing quite well both in terms of the app Marketplace, and the general development of the platform.

How do you get that much battery life out of you iPhone? Everyone I know with an iPhone, especially the iPhone 4, can't get through a whole day without looking for a charger at the end of the day. With a battery pack case, they can make it through two days. I'm just wondering.

I'm a mild user. I rarely make phone calls and do minimal things with it. It's my main phone and I keep it with me all the time, but it basically just sits in my belt case and once in a while I'll pull it out and check emails, market apps and do some other things with it.
But if I do make or receive calls, it will drain much more than it does. But there is no exaggeration about the BL I see with it. I can go several days forgetting about it and when I do think about it I figure it might need charging. But I pull it out and look and it's barely moved away from a full charge.
And this is the same type usage I do with my others phones, except my Focus. My Focus just sits at home in its pouch never used. But the battery will drain in less than 2 days.

I wouldn't really consider an idle phone a good benchmark for battery life, though it is the easiest. It is non-standard usage and probably not something they are optimizing around.

The only idle phone I have is my Focus. And all of my Androids and my iPhone are used, but used minimally. For music on my iPhone, I get around 50 hours. The standby time on the iPhone is literal and true. The standby time on the Androids isn't. The standby time on my WP7 phone is the most horrendous I've seen since my Blackberry Pearl Flip.

My surround battery life is great. I don't use it much for talking but i do use it to check my fantasy football scores, constant emails withour exchange server (push mail), comcast home email, yahoo (for fantasy football) and text messaging. I also use the internet frequently off 3G throughout the day and usually have an app update or 2 and in the morning i use the fm radio for my 40 min walk with the dog and mp3's for another 30 min walk after work.. After all this i'm at 30% - 40% battery life. Also my charge time is up to 90% with only about a 45 min charge. Surrounds have 1500m batteries.

Android obvious has superior hardware...they needed it to run their laggy OS.

Samsung infuse with custom rom eaquals 10 -12 hours of battery life moderate usage and no lag. Its overclocked to 1.6 ghz also. I left wp7 2 months ago and feel free all of a sudden. I really was pulling for wp7 for a while but unfortunately its not gonna make it.

Well, I was comparing two similar hardware phones (LG E900 with Nexus One); the have same CPU, RAM, DISPLAY and more or less, battery (50ma minus for the Nexus One).
I make exactly the same use of both phones, since my habits didn't changed in 3 months.
So yes, I will never come back to Android, for battery life, for reliability, for buggy OS, for smoothliness......

I find the two day battery for the completely idle (all radios off) Focus to be a bit surprising. I had mine in a similar situation for a few days and all indications pointed to it lasting around a week. It's definitely short of my old Touch Pro 2's month of full idle, but it's an unrealistic test either way. And we'll see what the new firmware with the official Mango update brings to the table.
I'm a reasonably light phone user in general, and I have no real qualms with the battery life I get on the Focus... at least after setting the screen brightness to low. It's pretty obvious that the screen is going to be a huge power draw when having it on high with a light-coloured display for a few minutes makes the entire device hot. Another strong point is the consistency of the battery meter - my Blackberry could end a day with anywhere from 90% to 40% battery remaining on very similar cross-day usage profiles, while my Focus idles at a very predictable 1.5-2%/hr with 3G, one EAS push account, and The Weather Network's live tile.
For a full wake-to-sleep 18-20h day to rarely consume more than 50% battery is totally reasonable, especially when the device doesn't freeze, crash, lag, or generally spaz out without regular reboots unlike every other mobile I've owned.

What hardware revision do you have, v1.3 or v1.4?

I'm actually surprised at your battery life, MartyLK. My Samsung Omnia 7 (which I assume is the same as the Focus in terms of hardware) easily lasts a day and a half with all radios on, push email/notifications, and light usage (usually web browsing or videos). It seems strange that your Focus would only last 2 days when sitting completely idle.

Yeah my HTC surround has a really small battery (1230mAh) and it lasts almost a full day with moderate usage.

wp7 might not have the best idle-time batterylife. but on moderate use, they last about as long.
and with mango, batterylife while using improved massively. can't wait for mango with actual updated device drivers. can't be long anymore.
omnia 7 here.
but in the end, nothing beats my dumpphone from nokia that i use at work. idle time of two to three weeks.
hope to see wp7 go more into that direction. instead of upping the performance (which is not needed), use the more efficient newer hardware for longer batterylife.
and yes, so far all friends who have a wp7 are very happy with it. except they still don't have mango, and have seen it on mine

I think battery life is a useless topic, especially in Android. People used to flashing custom roms and kernels can never have same battery life on all roms or all the kernels and themes they are flashing.
Besides their are a lot of settings and culprit apps in Android which can eat away your battery if not recognized and managed.
So, battery life largely depends on user habits as well.
Just got my focus today. Have yet to see things in here.

Battery life

I have charged it in the morning until it was full, and started playing with it.
It was on for 9 hours until the battery was completely dead.
I used it since 11:30 until 3:30pm, then I left it on standby for a 2 hours (battery was at 14%). I came back used it for another 2 hours, and it went dead.
Everything was on except for bluetooth and GPS.
Android Operating system used 83% of the battery and all the other application were under 5%.
I did quite a bit of browsing, photos, movies, youtube, downloaded some apps, etc...
What do you all think about the battery performance?
At the moment it is charging and I will leave it plugged in until the morning. It is also turned off.
What are your experiences? Opinions?
9 hours only? That's not good ... But probably you have quite some widgets that actively sync etc. etc.
i wouldnt worry to much as you probably just received it and you must have played with it for a while, and also try turning off the auto update of facebook, email etc etc
thats kindda dispointing, ... even with updating i expected it to last at least one full day, I mean when they put many widgets they should take into consideration the battery life ... hope its cuz the battery is new, and needs some few charges to feel maximum capability
As I said, I did have everything on apart from GPS and Bluetooth. (including updates).
And yes I did use it for 6 full hours (medium screen brightness).
Downloaded apps, watched videoclips, played some flash games, wrote e-mails, wrote texts, browsed the internet, etc... funnily enough I EVEN made 1 (one) phone call!
I wouldn't worry about it though. ALL my phones only lasted for about 8-10 hours the first day when I got them.
Doesn't new Lithium-ion battery needs a couple of charging cycles before
reaching optimal capacity!?
Would be nice if someone could update us in this thread about the battery life when you've had it a few days and it's being abused less
We must however point out a couple of things regarding the Desires out there at the moment, although we certainly do not wish to discredit anyone else's reviews.
We have been informed by a reliable source that some HTC Desires have been out for review for several days now, but these devices did not come from the same source as ours. These early versions did not contain the final ROM that we have been waiting for and I am reliably informed that those devices will have essential features missing. They have also had problems with the OS crashing and serious battery issues which is clearly down to the fact that Google had not completed the ROMS when the devices were shipped.

I'm fairly sure that 9 hours of constant use is pretty damn good for any device. If I use my Touch HD for browsing the net/listening to music/ syncing etc it will die in far less than that.
Remember that it is a miracle that the iPad lasts for 10 hours of constant use, and thats got a massive battery in it!
So yea get used to it! At least while you are playing with it being a new toy and all.

dont forget that the iPad has 9.7-inch (diagonal) LED display, so that shouldnt be a reason, and dont forget that the Desire's display is AMOLED which should be a battery life saver.
For the OP, if you could try using it the same (constantly) but disable the live wallpaper

Agree with the AMOLED, but it's running a 1ghz processor along with the already perceived power hungry android.... Gotta admit that if you expect it to last more than a few hours of playing with, will be sorely dissapointed.
Compared to my HD which had a 528mhz processor but lcd screen, which lasted less than 10 hours when playing with non stop.

It's not the same thing. "LED" is a backlit LCD-display, AMOLED is an active matrix OLED-display, completely different technologies.
TFT-LCD's use a backlight, OLED's has active pixels that light up per pixel and does not need an extra backlight.
The battery life is really poor.
I went to bed last night with it fully charged and this morning it was completely dead. Albeit I left meebo running in the background along with lookout and advanced task killer.
Nothing was set to update as I've deleted the friend stream and rss feed.
I'm pretty sure this phone should last a lot longer than 9 hours on standby.
If you have read the whole thread, you'll see that there might be an issue with the pre-released models. Unlocked/retail phones coming out next month with latest software will probably not have this issue.

I think someone should actually test turning everything off except gsm. No data connections, no updating of anything. No GPS, bluetooth, sync, no applications running. See how much it goes down overnight with everything off.
That could maybe be a good idea, just to see how much it goes down. But if you can't use the phone at all, I just can't see the point of having t his phone. It's made to be used and you are supposed to be connected at all times, so if HTC has made this phone with so bad battery performance, that just basically sucks.
On the other hand, it seems that the final ROM from HTC was just confirmed at Google this friday, so im guessing these early phones out there does not have the final ROM.

My Nokia E75, i run wifi all day, with push mail, and Zozoc (WiFi/GPRS Messaging client) and i can easily go through one whole day (and few hours). the screen is TFT, non-touch, and small.
I know that we cant compare cuz they are entirely different, but the point is, the battery life should not be (and i hope it is not) that bad, even when running apps in the background. one day (or few hours below that) should be decent.

The OS in the T-Mobile versions have already been approved by google, so its not a pre-release.
and i agree, someone should try to stop live wallpaper and updates (just use it as simple phone, calls, messages and a little bit of WiFi) and see how much that goes
I quote the following from the first detailed review from techradar
The battery in the HTC Desire was 'only' a 1400mAh effort - we'd have like to see a 1500mAh option there, as is the case with so many other smartphones at the moment.
We're also a little concerned about the battery life - it dropped rather quickly, and although you'll get a day's worth of use out of it under normal use (ie web browsing, calling etc) it can drop a little alarmingly fast at times.
We had a little look at what was munching on the power so much (thanks to the Android battery meter) and it seems to be the widgets (in particular FriendStream) and synchronising that's taking a lot of the power, along with the constant flicking to roaming networks and back to 3G.
We found a big increase in battery life if we stopped updating Peep, Friendstream and emails all day long, and when set to '2G networks only' the battery life also improved to three days' use without problem.

this seems good, this is decent! i dont use 3G much, i would probably update the friends stream on demand, and with a little bit above average use, i should get 1.5-2 days without problems (based on the review)
No I want some people who already have the desire to try this and come back with the result

What Do You Consider 'Good' Battery Life?

NOTE: Fourth Option Should Read 16-24 Hours of LIGHT Use!
I see a lot of people constantly talking about battery life on here and how they are disappointed by what they are seeing from ROMs, kernels, or the OTA release.
I'm interested to see exactly what sort of expectations people have on the lifetime of their phone.
I've been fairly cognizant of my phone's power consumption and have done a lot to ensure I understand how I use it and what effect that has on its life between charges.
I understand that a first generation phone with the largest screen, the fastest processor available, the most processor intensive camera, with animated wallpapers, synchronization to various web services, flash, and borderline experimental next-generation wireless connectivity that can tether to multiple devices. To have all that on a unit marginally larger than my old Palm Pre and roughly the same battery size (1150mAh stock) is going to come with some compromises.
I tend to overclock, ROM flash, and beat the snot out of my phone on a regular basis. Therefore, I have a super gigantic Seidio battery that I absolutely adore. I found that even before that, I was able to get my battery life under control if I controlled my phone properly, so I'm not sure what the problem is.
Did some people just get bad phones? Are some people just being unrealistic with their expectations? What goals do you think people should be setting for the lifetime of their phone between charges?
Its an honest question.
I used to get almost a week out of an old motorola flip style phone (v500 something).
Everything since then has been downhill.
I'm not under the false impression that these new phones are going to last as long as the older "dumb" phones, BUT.....Id like to be able to get through the day without charging my phone. I keep my screen about 40% brightness, I'm usually in an area with good reception, I only sync my Gmail, I've calibrated my battery, etc. The only real USE my phone gets is texting. I unplug my phone at 5am and its more than half gone by noon. Not real great IMO.
I think this will provide valuable insight as to expectations for this phone. Personally I have used smartphones since I can remember and I was bread to expect a nightly charge.
It may be unacceptable to some that we have to "mod" our phones to get reasonable battery life, but I really dont have too many complaints. Out of the box, the EVO is running a 1gz processor and powering a 4.3" display. Not to mention if you're running wifi and various apps. I think some people are just expecting too much from these phones. Look at laptops. When my dell was brand new, I could get 2-3 hours of steady use before it conked out. The battery life our phones are getting, modded or stock, isnt really that bad. If you're unwilling to do some research and easy mods or buy a spare $20 OEM battery off eBay please dont complain about it.

A nightly charge is acceptable. It's when you have to charge 2-3 times a day from moderate usage that is a little out of hand... Understandable that with heavier usage, more frequent charges would be needed.

I want to power a small village from my phone please
I want my phone to last a day. And call a typical day something like:
- l/2-1 hour talk
- 12-24 text messages
- 45 minutes - 2 hours web browsing
- 2 hours music
My iPhone 3GS would do this without a problem, my wife's iPhone 4 might do 2 days like this. The EVO just barely does this.
But.. I prefer the EVO for enough reasons I just dropped $10 for 2 extra batteries and a phone-less charger on ebay, and keep chargers in the car and at my desk, and get it plugged in for like 30 minutes somewhere during the day. I rarely use the backup batteries, but it is nice to have them.
Totally worth it for a bigger screen, 4G, more open OS.

This definitely sounds doable. If you aren't getting that out of your phone, I'd reccomend calling support. I'm going to assume your dedication has already lead you down your own troubleshooting path.
My standard was set with my BlackBerry: less than 5% discharge rate per hour under normal use, and I am happy.

Well what do you guys think? Are you satisfied by the battery considering the HOX's demanding setup? Mine lasts around ten hours with moderate to heavy use. Which is similar to my last phone, the SGS i9000. I found this quite acceptable.
HTC are a very reputable company, and often listen to their consumers (hence HTCdev). Is this latest move a shy away from that?

Gawwd why do people expect something with the resolution of a tv, and the same amount of cores of a high end pc, to not take much battery? I think its a bloody miracle these smartphones last longer than 5 minutes! As I've said before, you wouldn't expect a supercar to be economical?
Plus, the battery is an improvement to my dhd , so that is another miracle, considering the extra horsepower behind the one x

Where's the like button? I really do wonder what people expect. Get a Motorola if you want the battery to last you for a week.
More than happy with the battery life of the handset. Lasts me from when I leave home in the morning till when I get home at night and then some. Beats having to charge my phone during the day like on my DHD.
People need to get used to charging their phone every night, really don't understand people's issues with that. What's the big deal?

I know!!! My DHD is on the charger every night! It doesn't bother me
Why would they? It's fine.
To all the "glass half empty" whining types. You guys do know these things charge from USBs right. I got a great solution; plug it in when its running low.
Besides, the battery life is staggeringly good if you think about it. Mine lasts 2 days for simple calling and texting here and there and a whole day for quite heavy usage, browsing, YouTube, calls and so on. 18hours total, 4-4.5 hours screen on, 40/50mb data and 1.5 hours of calls yesterday, put it away at 1%, still not dead 2 hours of standby later.
Mine's OK, not great. I really didn't expect it to be. It'll be interesting to see how the S4 One XL does now that it's shipping. If it's about the same (with LTE off) than it's not a Teg3 issue. If it's dramatically better than we know it's not the display alone causing battery challenges.
I think that no update coming anytime soon is acceptable but no update AT ALL?
Im sorry but f*** that! Why can't they focus abit on the battery, some simple things would be to have less CRAP and bloatware, maybe if they could release 2 versions 1. simplified with the sense camera ONLY and rest ICS and the other with the full sense package that is really no necessary.
The most important thing to remember is that this a a PHONE to make calls and for that it works nicely and the battery lasts if you keep the screen off most of the time, but for a phone like this that was made to do more things I think you need to at the very least have a battery or a software symbiosis that can last for 8,9 hours of screen time.
Its Tegra 3 for f*** sake! With the super-dupe-triple-super-important-kill core2dou like nothing-quad-core-and a dedicated 5 companion core THAT IS SUPPOSE TO DELIVER KILLER BATTERY LIFE.
What is the problem?
I think there is simply too much Sense on the phone, too many uneceassy widgets and other crap that run in the background (oh you can flash cusom rom bla bla, you can freeze services with Titanium backup bla bla, but what if I want to use a stock rom?) bull**** I say, wih such and advanced CPU and memory and so on I do not see why you cannot have better battery life.
My Samsung Galaxy S2 can work for up to 3 days (ok it has a AMOLED ok ok but still, touchwhiz seems to not over run ICS) On stock ICS. Why? Because they have less 'painted over ICS functions that almost makes it run 2 OS's at the same time so maybe its no wonder the battery gets chewed up by all the sense applications.
This just my opinion from observing the phone and all the fanzy sense stuff after a week.
I believe this phone could be better in terms of software (without a doubt).
One thing they have to adress is the camera, why cant the image files be bigger than 2.9 megapixels? This is so stupid considering it has an 8 mpx camera... Also the full HD and 720p records in the latest firmware 1.28xx at approximately 24 fps and it should be 29 or 30. My Asus Prime records at a steady 30 fps at 1080p and 720p and its running Tegra 3 too.
They MUST at some point focus on battery life because if you dont have the juice to run all those fanzy apps and UI then why are they there in the first place?
I LOVE the weather graphics but I could live without it too (If I absolutely HAVE to....) the only thing necessary is the camera sense app because its the only thing that makes the phone unique and very fun and nice (but again whats the point without proper battery life?)
I hope HTC continues to work on making this one of the best first quad-core phone.
Another thing I noticed with SetCpu is that the phone is very high frequencies very frequently, if you install it and use the phone for a day you will see the graph scale, it uses 1.4 abut 40% of the time, but why? I never played games during this period or anything.
Im gonna keep my 1X because I love it and I believe in it and in the HTCdevs if they cant just be more positive perhaps
Cheers!

4-4.5 hrs screen on isn't typical usage that the majority are getting though. Closer to 3 hrs.
It's easier to be quick to judge others when your own device defies the norm for the better.
If you were struggling to get 2.5 hrs , I doubt you'd be as chirpy about it all.
Two words that will help battery life without HTC - "custom kernels"
If you need to see the difference they make just ask in one of faux's threads, e.g. in the Sensation dev forum.
did the update improve the batterie life and if so , does the HOX still run as fast or did things low down ?
Pretty much echo the below , i have had an sgs2 and have an xperia s and this phone with its companion core is at least 33% worse on battery than both of these, and the processor is supposed to be more efficient . The display excuse won't wash much as the xperia s display is at least as bright/power hungry if not more .
I would love to see the exchange / return rates on this handset due to it not living up to its hype , let alone the fault rates.
And i am not whining, i upgraded to one, i like it , i will keep it and maybe one day learn to root it and replace the rom, but lets not kid ourselves its just not a finished polished product in terms of software !
thats my 2p, thanks for reading

Battert Usage - Former iPhone User Surprised - 4G LTE? PowerAMP Wakelock?

With these larger screens and powerful processors, I can't say I'm totally surprised at the lower battery life compared to all the iPhones. They have smaller screens and the O/S is more tightly controlled and optimized for the hardware to maximize battery life.
With that said, I must admit, I'm somewhat disappointed with the battery life on this S3. I've now had it for two weeks so after lots of tweaking, rooting, apps installs and configs, battery and task monitoring, etc, I've kind of settled into my normal usage pattern which is typically pretty easy on the phone as more than 50% of the time I'm working from my home office with the phone plugged into USB so it is rare I have to leave in the morning and go the whole day without having to eventually sit back down at my computer and plug the phone back in.
However on the weekends, with kids sports and such, I'm now seeing the limitations on battery life on this phone. I have it set to:
Auto Display Brightness
No updating of apps unless on WiFi
GPS and Wifi turned off when I leave the houose (automatically via Llama - I turn them on only when I need them)
Power Saver Mode, all options except CPU power saving checked. (Kind of bought the phone for fast CPU although I'm not a gamer - just a multitasker and web browser)
Auto Screen Tone Turned On
Most other specific apps that have option to not download data except wifi I have that option turned on (aside from Taptu news feeds - 2 hour updates and Alerts from ESPN ScoreCenter - get maybe a couple alerts every few hours)
Haptic feedback turned off
Here's where I was shocked. First time I did some serious browsing was in a movie theater where I got there early and had about 20 min to burn so I did constant web browsing over the LTE connection. Watched batter plummet about 15% in 15 min. Whoa!
So is this just "how it is" with this phone that heavy LTE data usage eats battery like no tomorrow?
Other thing I noticed, is Using GSam, I see a task usually being in the top 3 or 4 most of the time with around 15-20% of the App Battery Usage total. It's called "System (*wakelock*)" and when I look at properties it shows around 6-8 wakelocks and Included Packages is just one "PowerAMP Full Version Unlocker" Included Processes: *wakelock* and com.maxmpx.audioplayer. But this is when I'm not using PowerAMP. In fact it happens after phone has been rebooted and I have never launched PowerAMP once!
I did notice something similar on the HTC One X+ I tried then exchanged for the S3 where I found a task associated with beats audio was eating up CPU/Battery when no music app was open as if it was periodically scanning my large MP3 library of 2,600 songs. Maybe PowerAmp is doing something similar?
I've found I'm not the only one noticing this:
http://forum.powerampapp.com/index.php?/topic/2662-battery-drain/
Well, first off, i think the main reason why the iPhone gets better battery life isn't because of the smaller screen or iOS being "optimized for the hardware". It's probably more due to the fact that it doesn't really run much of anything in the background. Very few apps actually continue to run when you leave them. It's kind of a pseudo-multitasking environment.
As for the S3's battery life.... it could be PowerAmp causing it. I also don't see why you'd want to keep power saving on the CPU off. It doesn't really seem to have that much of an impact on performance that i've seen while generally using the phone for web browsing and such. And no matter what phone you're on, LTE will kill the battery in no time flat.
I think you should give some time to settle your battery first...even after flashing a new rom its take couple of days for the battery to settle down. The first day i used my phone, the battery doed in 4 hours...now after 4 months it lasts for 15-16 hrs of normal to heavy use.
LTE does eat lots of battery, whenever i go in LTE area i have to switch my data off to keep my phone alive. That's why people like to have the ability to switch between LTE and HSPA+. Search to find that mod.
You can never compare iPhone with S3. As the above poster said, there is no multitasking in iPhones. The screen is small and not as good as S3. SAMLOED screen takes lots of battery.

I totally agree with you. You have to give it time to settle in. You can also run a battery calibration to try and help as well. I have LTE here in Omaha and I usually get at least 15 hours before I need to charge my battery. I have a QCell battery and it works awesome.
I will live with the battery life so I can actually see the screen without having to squint my eyes. I used to have an iPhone as well but that was years ago now and Android will always be the best.
Don't get me wrong, as a "Power User" coming from the iOS Jailbreak world, hardware and customization-wise, I love this phone a lot more than I like my iPhone - but mostly it's the big screen that I'm enjoying. Have had a couple crashes in the first two weeks which never happened in iOS but no biggie.
So I suspect its primarily the LTE, but combined with large screen, true multitasking O/S, etc, obviously battery life is a challenge. I would slightly criticize Samsung for maybe being a little too obsessed with keeping the phone thin. I know you can buy the bigger batteries with a replacement cover but that looks like it really adds major thickness to phone. They should have went for a 2500-2700 mah battery and increased the thickness slightly IMHO.
But hey, at least the battery is removable. So I can spend little money and get a QCell, charge it and keep it in my car or on my desk and if I know I'm not going to be able to charge the phone all day, just pop the extra battery in my jacket pocket.
The LTE usage is a bit of a mystery to me. You would figure, with LTE, you can download files faster so you spend less time actually using the phone. But obviously it appears the energy consumption is trumping the increased efficiency in data transfer! Too bad.
Why the battery 'breaks in' over time is even more of a mystery. This latest battery technology should not have any sort of break-in or memory issues. But I'm no battery expert. But my gut says there's something else at play. I've seen many threads over past couple of years that discuss an issue relating to Android doing some sort of "media scan" after boot and/or periodically. Maybe the battery break-in is more about the databases the O/S is creating and updating in the background "settling down" more than anything to do with the characteristics of the physical battery changing?
One thing is for certain though, battery life IS a common issue for most higher-end Android smartphone users. Not a deal breaker in the least for me, but will be interesting to see how the phone "seasons" over time regarding battery. I used Titanium Backup to freeze Power Amp and downloaded N7 instead just to rule Power Amp out. I just took a 1.5 hour shopping trip. Didn't use LTE data. But spent about 45 minutes at the grocery store using their wifi to access all my coupons and shopping lists. Battery was 97% when I left house, 77% when I got home. Ouch. Well, that was probably more like a 2 hour round trip. Still 20% in 2 hours is not good especially considering I had 0 talk time and wasn't using LTE data.
The crazy thing is, Gsam says 12% screen, 86% apps. Under apps it says 23.6% Kernel, 19.3% Media, 19.3% N7 Player!!! And I didn't play any music!!!! This is leading me more and more to believe this all has something to do with having an extremely large music collection (2600 songs) on the phone and the phone is building a database and it just takes time. Pure guess.
Get his app disable autostart of the applications that are not needed. Also, get betterbatterystats to get a more detailed idea of whats going on with your phone.
how bad is your battery life? fwiw my wife's iPhone 5 gets horrendous battery life. makes the s3 look like a miser.
16 - 20 hours would be reasonable IMHO, or a average drain of 4-5% per hour. assuming you're actually using the thing... I never understood people who cripple the thing and never touch it in order to get max life.

You know when someone pushes away an iPhone groupy I'm pretty sympathetic but this post is just a noob rage idiotic post. I didn't even read through all your points but will just say you need to spend more time learning
-there is autobrightness on root (and non rooted) and in fact autobrightness doesn't necessarily save battery...as much utiltiy as having say a brightness notification in the app bar or something like lux that allows you to control brigntness by environment/app etc
-it says nothing of what you have running in the background, spam apps, wakelocks etc (bbs) The fact your apps and music is taking up more battery than say cell tower stanbdy and screen display is an obvious red flag
- says nothing of how you checked your connections and how reception is in your area
Another point is the iphone 4 and 5 are MUCH thicker than the galaxy s3...they hold relative to the backgroudn processes etc running, a much larger and thicker battery. The same physical thickness of the s3 battery you could buy a battery with nearly twice as much juice.
We dont' know how you optimized your phone for your uses or whether you cleaned up processes, apps etc, how cleanly you flashed. Go and learn then come back and cry
Wow.... you tell him to learn then come back and cry.... say it's a "noob rage idiotic post".... and yet:

Well here's an update. As I mentioned, I froze PowerAmp and installed N7 instead. I could have swore I reset the GSAM battery monitor, AFTER N7 scanned all my media files. Yet once again, like PowerAmp (via System *wakelock*) N7 was third highest battery eater over 2 hours of "normal" usage WITHOUT LTE Data Use, only Wifi and NO TALK TIME and WITHOUT USING N7!
So I dumped N7 and installed Player Pro. Just went out again for 2 hours to my son's basketball practice. Spent the 1.5 hour practice reading e-mail and doing some web surfing ALL ON LTE! Battery went down like no more than 10% !! At the beginning of the practice I played a song in Player Pro for a few seconds then backed out of the app. Checked GSAM 2 hours later, no significant PlayerPro battery usage!
It is more and more looking like something is going on with PowerAmp and N7 regarding cataloging of large music collections. So I'll stick with Player Pro and see how things go over the next few days.
Thanks to those with the constructive criticism. This has been one of the pluses of moving to Android. There's a lot larger population of "Power Users" than on iPhone that are willing to help someone relatively new to the platform.
yea... that's the one thing i had a feeling it might have been doing, but wasn't exactly sure as i've never really been that media-crazy with my phones. Good to see that you found the issue, though.

Yeah, "battery break-in" is a bit of a misnomer. What's actually happening is that the stats the OS keeps on the battery capacity and usage are being rebuilt. It takes a few charge cycles for your system to "learn" what it needs to accurately show you remaining capacity, etc.

Good move! I use PlayerPro and I love it. It's one of my few "must haves", not least of which is its ability to sync ratings back to iTunes with iSyncr. None of the other major players have this. This is important for me as I'm also an iOS refugee and I still have all my music in iTunes.

power user here too coming from iphone 3g, 3gs, 4 to samsung skyrocket, note, nexus to the current at&t sgs3. all have been jailbroken and rooted for "customization" purposes and the first thing i noticed going to the android phones was how poor the battery life was when compared to any iOS device; even when the devices were stock. I can deal with it because of how much customization i can do with android that i can't do on iOS so for that reason alone i stick with android. and also nothing apple has done has impressed me with their iPhone series yet. might pick up an iPad mini retina one day
anyways, back to your battery issue. have you tried going to stock rom or formatting just to make sure its not a hardware issue? i know for mine, one time my data partition that had my music had some corrupt file that had the media scanner always running and killing my battery. i had tried everything and there was no way that in 8 hrs i'd have < 30% left with no usage. i finally deleted and formatted everything, went to pure stock with no files except for my contacts and no email sync. then i got 15 to 20 hours... that's usual for the sgs3, a tad less than my old iphone 4. that told me my battery wasn't bad.
i ended up keeping an eye on wakelocks and re-installing all my apps and putting all my music back on and my battery issue dissapeared and i'm happy. still have poweramp installed, but moved to using google music for cloud and local music. what made me really happy was going to a hyperion battery and the slimmer extended sedio case for 2 to 3 days of battery life on this sucker for a decent price. :good: still have the stock batter for backup too!
I'm not on a Custom ROM. Just rooted.
I installed Better Battery Stats to see how it worked. Don't like it as much as GSAM. Seems you can get a bit lower-level process info upfront, but the graphing is barely readable and it doesn't show percent usage of battery for each process. Just number of s(econds) and blue and red line? Maybe I'm missing a setting? I think BBS may be popular as maybe it existed before GSAM (formerly Badass Battery Monitor I think) or maybe there is just something about BBS that I haven't realized yet is a major advantage over GSAM? They both do the job. Sorry for going off on a tangent.
The process hogging the battery the most now is Google Maps and I know from searching and reading this is VERY common. It can be related to ANY app wanting to poll your location. I'm not yet sure though if the usage is excessive. Looks like not. I turned off all of the Location settings in Maps (but left "Location and Google search" in main Location Setting ON as I read that really defeats a lot of functionality. Google Now wasn't happy I turned of Location History (in Maps) but I still get the current commute times and local weather on my Google Now so I have yet to discover any big disadvantage of turning off most (not all) of the Location settings in Maps if you don't want to share your location or see your location history.
Apparently Google Now and potentially other apps like Facebook, etc. want to use Google Maps to poll where you are. One user said turning off History helped on the battery - makes sense as now Google Now isn't constantly trying to see where you are even if the phone is just sitting on your nightstand! I hate that big brother feeling so anytime an app has an option to turn location awareness off, I usually use it. When I go to use Maps I just turn the GPS on. But I still need to learn what I'm missing out on, when turning off some of these settings. Now I'd like to figure out how to get GPS to turn on automatically any time Maps is manually launched and then turned off automatically anytime maps is closed! That would be nice. Surprised that function isn't built-in to Android as opposed to just prompting you to take you to settings. Guess I may have to break down and learn how to code in Tasker instead of using Llama for my automation needs.
I've left the phone unplugged for what, 8 hours now. Very light usage today. I'm at 80%. BBS is showing 3.5%/hour. That's 28 hours. But like I said, no talk time on the phone today, a half dozen texts, no web browsing and maybe 30 min of total app usage so I would expect 3.5%/hour.
Bottom line is it looks like I don't have any major issues like I had on the stupid HTC One X+ that was getting hot. Seems like the media player switch is what did the trick. I'm just curious why apps as popular as N7 and PowerAmp would be any different. It could have been just timing in that I switch to Pro Player about the time the O/S was done doing it cataloging of the media or whatever it does. I'm sure 2,600 high bitrate songs (14GB) of songs on the sdcard is pretty above average for your typical Android User. Wish there was more in-depth technical documentation on some of these processes though published by Google for us Power Users to read if so desired. Guess that's why we have XDA Forum.
-- add --
Duh, just saw the first condition in Llama is "Active Application" the problem is, I only want the GPS to turn on when I manually launch the app myself. I hope an app trying to use Maps in the background doesn't trigger the GPS on. Guess I'll find out.
-- add --
I forgot why this isn't possible. Google doesn't want to allow ANY apps to turn GPS on/off automatically due to privacy issues. Is there a setting to let the user decide this? Make me feel like they're treating me like an idiot!

I am seriously tempted to get a Pixel 5 instead, which I am willing to sacrifice the performance + 120Hz because I'm just another daily user.
Is there a way to underclock Snapdragon 8 Gen 1?
Let us hear your thoughts too. Thanks.
Which s22 model do you have?
Also I felt like I got more battery drain with adaptive battery off so I kept it on but slept all apps except ones i need notifications for
I have the 901e and updated to the Vietnamese firmware avdf running very similar set up to you getting 7 - 9h sot
Try removing that optimiser and using the doze setting in galaxy max hz
Also 96hz works with power saving on
Get galaxy app booster it's with in good guardians (can just download the apks online if you can't find it in the galaxy store) from what I've read it wipes dalvik cache
I'm on S22 SM-910E/DS.
I see... I'll give it a try on your suggestions!
But do you still face quite abit of heat during screen on and using of phone after the tweaks?

No heat at all, also in battery powersave settings you can limit the CPU to 70% (in case you didn't know already) from what I can see in adb it's on even when powersaving isnt
Mine is an SM-S9010. I rooted it and did some work on it. I turned off cores, underclocked it, turned off adaptive battery and so on. With all the things I tried, the SOT differs from charge to charge. I stopped even gaming altogether on it. I managed to get 30 more minutes out of it.
So the average SOT for me sits at 4h. I've got the Prime core and the last Middle core turned off, the Little cores underclocked to 1.5GHz and the rest to 1.9. The phone still overheats but the drain is slightly better.
Then there's the idle drain. The main culprit is Google's notorious Play Services crap with its services framework and all the other Google BS. I even installed a module to let it be optimized/dozed. It worked half the time. The other half the drain was even higher than before so it did worse than good. Now I've got Battery Guru installed and this thing monitors everything I need, plus it has a lot of stuff embedded in it, like the Quick Doze mod, power saver and Sensors Off with the screen off, etc. I've got the Powersaver on after the screen turns off and Data saver, and the idle drain sits at ~1%/hour. It goes at 0.7-1%/h, during the night unless the Play Services start spasming again, and they tend to do that a lot. And before having someone suggest a fix, please don't. I tried them all. They're just temporary solving the issue.
So yeah, there's no way in HELL someone can convince me they get 7-9h SOT cause that's just silly and exaggerated lying for a reason I don't understand.
In a 20h time frame the battery will lose 30% while the phone is idling. That includes ~10% which goes to some music listening and calls. I'm then left with 70%. After cutting off the 10-15% at which I plug in the phone, I'm left with ~60% of actual battery for the SOT. That means ~2150mAh. The battery is simply too small to be capable of anything more.
If you watch hours of YouTube, yeah, the SOT will turn out better because you're barely touching the screen once in a while and the CPU does the bare minimum and nothing overheats or goes into seizure mode. And the longer you use it in a smaller time frame, the better the results. When you use it over a longer period of time, go from idle to active use, idle again, and so on, that's when things start to take shape, so to speak. Then the moment you start scrolling and loading and loading things on Reddit or TikTok for example, or you browse the web, switch between apps and so on, things also change. The CPU will jump from a range of frequencies and produce more heat. The battery will share some of that heat and thing will get hot relatively hot soon, especially if it's hot outside. That translates into even poorer battery performance cause the hotter it gets, the worse the active drain is. And also, the lower the percentage, the worse the drain is too, I have noticed since I got this piece of crap phone. But yeah, if outside it's hot AF, the phone will be hot too. Today here where I live it's 30C right now. Using this thing and doing nothing intensive on it still gets it hot. It's too small to dissipate heat properly. Those saying "not heat here" etc, it's not possible unless you live in a slightly colder climate.
Not to forget to mention, I debloated this thing, removing pretty much everything Samsung included and I left only their bare minimum BS. Did it solve anything? Yes and no. It's a small difference but definitely not as big as I was expecting. It mainly reduces the idle drain, but like I said, the difference is extremely minimal.
I used a Pixel 5 last year. It was a great little phone. The battery life was fantastic on that thing. It was basically the first phone I've ever had with such a great battery life. The I moved to an iPhone 13 Pro. The one was even better. I never had to worry about running out of battery. Then after getting bored with iOS, I preordered an S22. Did I even consider the battery life? Absolutely not.
In conclusion, if you keep trying to find a solution to the problem, you won't fix much. Thing might improve today but tomorrow you'll be disappointed again the cycle starts again the next day.
The 8 Gen 1 built on Samsung's 4nm architecture is absolutely rubbish. It's terrible in terms of efficiency and when you pair it with a tiny battery you get a Galaxy S22, the devil child sent on Earth to destroy your mental health.
So don't bother trying much. Just use the phone as is try to use it as is. Just have a power bank with you when you're away and you're fine. Otherwise you won't enjoy the phone one bit. I, for instance, got to a point where I took it out of the case and now I use it with just a screen protector and the rest completely unprotected. If I drop it and it gets smashed into a million pieces, I don't care. Cause this is the worst phone I've ever had In my life. It's hard to like.

Sorry to disappoint but I'm not being silly nor lying, I have absolutely no reason too i have nothing to prove or anyone to impress by talking s***, I'd be here doing the same if my battery was rubbish which it was to start with. I don't get any over heating, phone drains roughly 3% over night and barely get any google services wakelocks so you can believe what you want i really dont care what you think I'll chill here happily with a mint running s22 with plenty of sot

It's fine. It's like a described it though. A continuous run of usage with with barely any stops or very short ones, will offer better stats. That's "very light" usage. Anyone complaining about battery life is doing a lot more on their phone just like me, the one who created this thread and the majority of S22 owners, with both variants of the phones.
Sorry if I offended you. You wouldn't be able to get the same SOT with our usage though, not even close, especially of you're 100% on cellular data.

Thank you for this. Probably the most honest review about S22's battery. Like you I tried everything under the sun (except the rooting and underclocking). This phone is just disappointing. I could relate to every single line as I read through your post. Weirdly, I'm just happy to know that Im not the only one feeling this way about this "flagship" device.
I'm coming from a very old OnePlus6 which STILL works perfectly fine on a custom Android with close to 4-5 hours of SOT in a full days usage. I charge it only in the night, sometimes it even makes it through the night..
I thought S22 with a higher battery (and NEW) will at least give 6 hours SOT but man was I wrong!!
So initially I used Smart Switch, and I got a terrible SOT of 1-2.
I did factory reset and manually set up the phone and I got about 3 hours of SOT.
I went through the debloating process and now I'm 3-4 hours of SOT.. Still that is so horrible for a flagship!
Its such a let down honestly! I get a flagship and paid so much money and this is such a huge issue! And I hate the font size on the notifications/panel.. it is just not proportional to the overall system font size! And not to forget, the phones takes about 1-1.5 hours to charge. Such a pain when are used to the OnePlus DashCharge which blazes through. Fast Charge on Samsung is such a shame
S22 is seeming to be a mistake. I'm considering swapping this for a Oneplus 10 Pro OR an iPhone 13! You made a similar switch? Looking for advice on fixing this brick of a phone or recommendation on alternate device.
Maybe custom ROMs or Updates in the future will make S22 better?
Edit: I too have a SM-S9010

I doubt anything will improve things the way we want. Unless we see a complete revamp of how apps use the CPU, which is a deep optimization process, that should done by Google all the way to a system level, things simply cannot improve in such a drastic way. After doing some math, a 1% idle drain or 15-20% active drain is something relatively decent because it's based on the battery inside the phone. The real capacity of the 3700mAh is actually 3590. So it's even worse than it appears. We've got to accept in the end that Samsung ****ed up this year with the smaller phone, despite the sales numbers.
Anyway, I also had a OP6 which I really liked until the software went completely 180 and disappointed me with that insane redesign which went against everything OP started with.
Anyway, back to the S22. I'm not really bothered by the charging speed. However, considering the terrible battery life, a much quicker charging speed was rudimentary to compensate for the other thing. Samsung doesn't give a **** though. So long as business gets better.
The bottom line is, and I reached to this conclusion the hard way cause I can say that I lost a lot of money in market value in the past 3 years, is that in the Android world, if you want a flagship device with very good battery life, you've got to go big. Otherwise you'll be disappointed. On iOS, you can get that with the smaller phones. Choosing the bigger phone in that situation, will get you the best battery life on the entire phone market. Android needs more mAh to compensate for sudden idle drain, services that have seizures out of the blue and the regular active drain due to poor app optimization. The bigger the battery, the more mAh for those unexpected things to eat and the less you'll have to worry about the battery life, as long as it easily gets you through the day. But if you want to keep using a smaller phone, something that actually fits in your pocket, then I'm afraid only Apple can offer you the best. iOS is in a completely different league in terms of optimization. Not to mention how perfectly smooth everything in every corner is. That is the true definition of buttery smooth no matter the action you do and no matter the app you're using. On Android frame drops/stutters are a regular and no matter the phone I used, they've always been there, despite the claims. I guess I've got more sensitive eyes. Even so, on iOS, those frame drops are so rare, that you really get a truly delightful experience 99% of the times. Not to mention that the 120Hz experience on iOS is actually smoother than the 120Hz on Android, if that makes any sense. All the polish the OS receives is very noticeable on that 120Hz panel. The way the OS works is what you need to get used to, the restrictions and so on. If you can get past that, you're good to go.
So if you want to throw away the S22, thing that I wouldn't blame you for, a 13 Pro is what I'd suggest to you, if you wanna keep using a small phone but if you want the best of the best, go with the Max brick version.
I'm personally waiting for the 14 lineup and I'm most confident I'm gonna get the 14 Pro Max. I want to never worry about battery life. For me it's 2 big compromises I have to accept: iOS and the phone size.

Ha Ha! I don't believe in miracles. A company that decides to address the issue by creating a mod or something to replace the back glass with something else that fits a bigger battery inside. That is a miracle to me
Thing is, the more you try to optimize this phone, the worse it gets
This is also the case for the adaptive battery that samsung has put on.
Sure you'll get good sot on any phone if you're locked in an app at low brightness for few hours that just scrolls through or plays videos.
But as soon as you start auto killing running apps and do multitasking with them after that, you'll barely get 2-3 hours sot.
Best I got from the exynos version on this was about 4.5 hours SOT with all settings I need enabled and gw4 conected to it.
But the average days (phone outside on higher brightness) are way below that. Using the doze mode when screen off, fingerprint disabled when screen is off, most of the bloatware /junk apps disabled or put in deep sleeping mode. (no root). I keep my phone at 85% and recharge when Im home/office whenever possible
Iphone really naied this down since the by just freezing the active proceeses for the standby adavantage.
The cpu doesnt really have to do anything when you relaunch them.
Im quite surprised android cannot do the same in 2022
Such a shame, this would've been the perfect compact phone if the software was done right on it.
But where is the $$$ for google/samsung for tracking everything you do ?
No matter what settings you try to disable, the phone constantly scans for gps/wifi/bluetooth devices (google's gms even claims this is for covid purposes in their TOS now)
Thank you everyone for the debate above. Understand that battery differs from one another, it seems that most people probably belongs to the side where the battery is insufficient to last through the day, or barely.
I love this phone so so much, and I got the Graphite model.
I hate to say goodbye, but I'll be going back to Pixel 5, and hoping S24, or whatever, will be a more optimized S22, keeping the compact phone size.
I use a snapdragon gen 1 s22. The battery is not terrible but also not great. An SOT of 3hrs for 3 days standby is what i get with max hz app installed, power saving on, debloated, sync on for two mailboxes. I get more SOT with less standyby time( if i watch youtube videos). I think its a nice balance for a compact phone. I had the pixel 6 before this but it was too heavy and big though the battery was slightly better.

Im a pixel fanboy. But recently with the bugs, poor call quality and the random battery drains i chose to move on. I hate the material you in android 12. Atleast i need an option to switch it off. I cant root as i need to use bank apps in my phone.
Here is a screen shot of my s22's battery usage for the past two days.

Yup I got one myself now. Only downside is the under display firing top speaker which makes the volume thin and muffled. Other than that, I'm very happy with the phone!
And for god-knows-what reason, Pixel 5 rocks a 4080 mAh battery. Wonder why tf S22 weighs heavier and unable to carry a bigger battery. Bells and whistles, but neglected this basic need of a phone

If im not wrong the pixel 5 is made of aluminum(sides and back) but the S22 is made of glass(back). Thats the reason for the weight difference.

That is true. But SN8Gen1 is too much to handle for a reduced battery size. I'll go to Samsung shop to see how S22+ feels in the hand, as the battery size is bigger. But for now I'll stick with Pixel 5.
