i advise for now dont do msl reset - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

its been reported by multiple people that doing a msl reset will soft brick your handset i would advise against it but there has been somecases that msl reset helps with there los or cod issues thank you have a great night !

after rigorous testing of came to the conclusion that los and circle of death are kernel related hence im on stock kernel with root and had no los or cod but on a zeo kernel once i leave a sprint zone and have zero service it never comes back on when im back in a active service area from what im reading i think there adding there tweaks into the stock kernel instead of building from source

Some details please?

It's a confirmed issue on stock as well. Hell even 3rd Party Retailers for sprint know that. It seems to happen more on root for some, i actually had more trouble on stock than zedo V1 or V3.

yes he did do a msl reset youll see for your self your phone will not boot!

but i do thank you zedo for getting the ball rolling i just wanted to make ppl understand that the msl reset is a no no and i think its a great idea that ur rebuilding your kernel using stock as ur base instead of source

What the hell are you talking about, with all due respect?

i personally tested 3 epic touch one stock one zedo and bubby and stock was the only one to repick the signal up im not saying the zedo or bubby did but sometimes they got stock keep in mine for zedo to get the kernel working he had to interject the correct command into the source so whos to considering this is his first kernel he wasnt missing a thing or 2 not saying he but but hypothetically speaking its possible i think by using a stock kernel that been tested before its released and that has the all the correct commands in it is gonna work better as a base for him im not bashing zedo i commend him for being the first for taking such initiative on something he never done !!! all hail zedo im just saying i know alot of ppl that did the msl reset and got stock with a unbootable phone i didnt say not to flash zedo alll i say was msl reset is a no go do what you want its a free world this is just what i advise

i did msl reset on 3 phones already and there were unbootable now this mite not happen to everyone like i said in my first post but why take the chance if it can happen

I got a lot of data drops today, at least 4-5 of them requiring a phone restart.
Too scared to do the MHL reset again seeing as the first time I did it on v2 it soft bricked my phone..
Has any progress been made in tracking the root of this issue down?

I wanted to really start from scratch so I went through some of the Samsung open source code and found that there were some unnecessary modules being loaded. That could be what's causing some problems (although I haven't had much but think it's signal related or Sprint's towers being updated), but with no overclocking and the changes, it could solve everything? Dunno still.
So I tried my best to trip the bloat-code out and try to keep it as stock as possible (no overclock), perhaps some of you can test this out for me.
Changelog
v.1
- CWM 4.0.1.5
- Superuser 3.0 + fixed su, now installs in /system/bin, you can update the binaries with SuperUser app.
- init.d support (/system/etc/init.d)
- Bootanimation support
- fixed Airplane toggle
Things to test:
- LOS?
- Video out? - sorry my video out adapter is still being shipped, I think I enabled it but can't really check???
-Airplane toggle should be fixed
Things I am working on:
- Boot splash logo? Still working on that, if anyone knows how to change it, please let me know.
- Recompiling CWM from scratch, add external SD support, fix wipe issue
- Add infrastructure to wifi tether and USB tether?
Devs, u r free to steal my stuff, or stuff I stole I really don't remember from taking too much energy pills, taking a big white line from Stevie Jobs, "Good artists copy, great artists steal.".
If you have some knowledge to share, plz don't forget to email me at zedomax [at] gmail.com
If this works well, I will build off it or otherwise I will keep optimizing until its fully stable.
Thanks guys, you rock!

Flashing now.
Boots up. Will be testing until I can get mine to work, but I think I had the same intent as yours does. Boots into CWM just fine too.

Flashed fine over 4.1beta. Seems to be working well, airplane mode working. Under 4.1 I seem to suffer routine LOS when on the road but not when at home, so it may take a while to fully test but so far so good.
Thanks for all the hard work.

Root is still messed up for me with your kernel Zedomax, so please make one that doesn't have root or even busybox(unless it's needed for the recovery) as root & busybox can be added through CWM if the user wants
great work zedo! i'll test it out once i get back to work. somehow i left ALL my micro usb cables at work like an idiot.
I had the LOS today, had to restart my phone three times in the span of three hours. So, being frustrated, I booted in to CWM, wiped my davlik and flashed back to v1.1. Then I wiped davlik again, flashed back to v1.2 and rebooted. Haven't have a LOS issue since. So far so good...

CWM probably can't cause issues since it's in recovery, it doesn't fire up unless u r actually in recovery but CWM we all using right now have issues as they are based off SG2 CWM binaries. Someone has to compile a CWM for Epic4GT from scratch or at least hack it. I am gonna try that soon but compiling kernels is just taking too much time, I've been 24/7 compiling for like a whole week, get no other work done, i seriously need to go out to a rave and get f--ed up for couple days. Then my head will be clear, compiling will be fun.

hey i just placed the zip on phone and then flashed waited 10 mins and started it up and it um starts up with yellow triangle and phone turns black screen and nothing happens further...... what am i doing wrong ? plz help<>

Have you tried re flashing or restored a backup?
Dude you posted like 6 minutes ago, don't bump. When someone knows they'll reply, and this is in the wrong section.
well im limited to where i can post >< so i just thought i will do it here
anyway i did a full wipe 3 times or so i connected the phone to laptop and formatted also the hard drive via laptop to make it totaly empty and reflashed again and it still turns right off after the startup i dont know what im doing wrong i do exactly as they say on juggernaut section
1. MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP! well i didnt did this i dont rely on backups><
2. Download rom.zip and place on sdcard i did
3. Boot into clockwork recovery i did
4. Choose to flash zip (choose appropriate sdcard location) did this
5. Once zip has finished installation, reboot did this aswell
6. Now wait a minimum of 10 minutes (I know you're excited but don't touch anything!) did this aswell
7. Reboot Fails
8. Now you are free to enjoy the unstoppable JUGGERNAUT! im not enjoying

If you can't follow the instructions, you shouldn't flashing ROMs.
No offense, but seriously, it doesn't say that for funsies, we really mean it for times like this.
Now... when you boot into CWM what version does it say up top. Also, did you check the md5 when you downloaded it?

This made me LOL.
The only person who can get a Tmo SGSII ROM to boot on an International SGSII is Chuck Norris. I can tell you are not Chuck Norris because of your Thanks count. Chuck Norris' Thanks count is so high that only government supercomputers have the resources to display such a high number. The rest of us just get rerouted to a 404 error page and then our computers start smoking before the blue screen of death appears and our motherboards melt. I went through 4 computers before I learned this, now I have to write to my congressman in order to get the real number. Even then, by the time I get the number I have to add atleast another 150,000 Thanks to that to get the real number, because Walker Texas Ranger is in syndication and even when you thank the fictional version of Chuck Norris when he rescues little white kids from Mexican drug smugglers, his Thanks count goes up. Its very frustrating.
Either way, now you know. Flash International SGSII ROMs on your device and you should be ok.

You would need to check the thread for the international version. Since I only have the T-Mobile version (and I am a Noob), I see no need to look at the other version's ROMs. I don't want to get tempted by another ROM and have a brainfart and think it will work on my phone.

[ROM][3.2]Contingency v1.0b1[5/16/12]

Alright members of the I957 community, I know it's been a long time coming, but I'm proud to (finally) present to you a custom ROM designed specifically for our devices: Contingency! There are a couple of things I need to rattle off in this description before I can get down to business. 1. Due to some error in updater-scripts causing incredible lag with CWM flashes, this ROM is Odin-based only. If you aren't very good with Odin/need a refresher, look down below for a quick little tutorial to help get you started. 2. Due to my lack of an actual cellular data account for this device, it's difficult for me to tell you whether or not the data is working... I'm 99% it is functional in this build, but in future builds I may need a tester to discern for me.
Features & Added Apps
Da_g's OC Kernel
CWM Recovery
Rooted
Zipaligned
Deodexed
Bloat Removed
Build.prop performance tweaks
System Tuner for OC/UV
Titanium Backup
Go Launcher HD (If you're a Touchwiz hater)
As you can probably see, this is a very bland ROM right now; I just had my first successful Odin flash of it yesterday, and the testing lead all the way up to today.
Stuff To Add/Do (Taking Suggestions)
Extended Power Menu
CRT-Off
Bravia
Xloud
Edit Name in build.prop
Put data monitor back in
Theming
Due to my little experience in the world of Tablet modding, I could really use some help as to what you guys would like to see in future builds of Contingency.
Instructions For Odin Flash (It's In Red Because It's Important)
A data wipe is optional, but I recommend it.
Download the .rar of Contingency from the link below
Extract out "Contingency vX.tar" to a place you'll remember it
Open up Odin
Navigate to your Contigency.tar and load it into the PDA slot
Make sure your Tab is in download mode (Power Button + Both Volumes)
MAKE SURE RE-PARTITION IS UNCHECKED!!!!!!111!!!!!111?!?!?!!11!11!%[email protected]^#
Hit start
Go grab a snack, sit back, and watch that progress bar
Screenshots
Look at your Stock Tab... Now back to me. Unfortunately, I'm not your stock tab, but that's what Contingency looks like.

if you want wifi hotpost use quick tether from market. it activate usb and wifi tethering.
I'm gonna charge mine up for a little bit and try this rom out later. I only got 30% charge currently.
Bought mine used a couple of months ago. Still has an active SIM in it from the original purchasers account. Guess the termination fee was too steap or they needed the cash and decided to live with the $30 a month
I mainly use it on wifi but will test it out on ATT network to see. I just pop it on once in a while to see if it's still active. Just checked and it was!
If it's a nogo I can just use Odin with the original rom from ATT/Samsung? I already have it downloaded as I've use it twice to reset mine.
Waiting for ICS sucks!
Does this still have the ATT data monitor app?
Thanks!

Yea the only one that worried me was the 3g booster and dalvik heapsize. Honeycomb also has a few already built in as most edits are based off of gingerbread.
Cool stuff tho

No issues with flashing the rom. First bootup was a little scary as it stayed on the Android animation screeen for a while. Wound up doing a factory reset once up and running to clear up some issues. Seems to get more responsive after it sits for a while and after a couple of reboots. Had a couple of issues with updating the app store and maps but it seemed to work itself out after a couple of tries.
ATT data is functional for those who are interested. I don't live in a LTE area but it's getting closer by the month.
ATT data monitor app is gone. No biggy but was nice to see how much free data I have left....Hoping original owner keeps my data plan going!
Active applications widget can be added but only clicks when touched. Guess the app is no longer included....No big deal just thought I'd mention it.
Looks like there is alot of stuff to play around with as far as tweaks go. Not sure what they all do but guess I'll check them out later.
Thanks again!
I'll let you guys know if I see anything else that is worth mentioning.

Now that you mention the AT&T data monitor app from the tablet, (poster above) I was trying to get the app working on the galaxy note and I failed. I installed the apk from the tablet to the Galaxy Note via Titanium and manually... I see the app and the widget on the Note perfectly, but I am unable to link it to my phone data plan... Any ideas? I was able to get to a screen were is asking for some credentials that are out of my hands... I guess they are AT&T credentials for my account in order to set or link the monitoring app...

So I've made a NANDroid backup from recovery with CWM already.
If this rom fails, will I be able to do a restore of the stock rom?
Thanks

It would be best to save a copy of your nandroid backup somewhere safe like on your computer just in case you need it later. Not sure if Odin will nuke it or not. My tab was pretty much stock when I flashed it today as I used Odin to restore the stock rom a couple of weeks ago. If I remember correctly a folder in root is no longer there. Not 100% sure what it was called but I'm thinking it was preloaded or preinstalled. Not needed anyways as it was ATT apps/bloatware if I remember correctly.
I'm not sure about the rom failing and nandroid back thing. Maybe somebody else knows forsure.
I'm thinking if you for some reason don't like this rom you'd have to maybe use Odin to flash the stock rom back first, then install the kernel you were using and then move the nandroid back to the tab if it was deleted and then flash it back.
As soon as there is a link to download the original Stock AT&T ROM I will be installing this ROM...

GPS Signal Broken -- Fix Found

Hello all,
Long time lurker, just wanted to share an issue I had.
I've flashed nearly every ROM that is out there since I got my SGS3 and have never had any GPS issues, however this weekend I used it without a problem but Tuesday all of a sudden turning it on and off still produced nothing...not even the increased battery drain from having GPS on.
Here's what I did in hopes that it can help someone or at least give some knowledge as there wasn't a lot out there when I searched:
1.) Restored a previous Nandroid that I knew had a working GPS --- Result = FAIL
2.) Searched XDA and Google...found a video with some USSD codes for the dialer, etc.. ---- Result = FAIL
3.) Pulled battery and sim card, etc... --- Result = FAIL
4.) Flashed Wicked as I know that is a stable and highly used ROM. Everything great but still no GPS. ---- Result = FAIL
5.) Found a suggestion about clearing cache in google framework, Maps and uninstalling Maps updates. Result = FAIL
**however Play Store wouldn't let me update Maps when I rebooted as it said it wasn't compatible with my phone. No clue why.
6.) Finally I decided to do Triangle Away and Chainfires unrooting procedure to get back to unrooted stock. ---Result = SUCCESS!
Not sure what about it made GPS come back, however the next step will of course be to root again and see if there are any issues.
Hope this helps someone who ends up in my situation. Feel free to PM if you need more details.
Thanks to all
Edit: Just as an FYI -- when I rooted again, GPS was still back and I've had no issues since.
Thanks man, I like threads like these because you never know when you may need them. Same issue for me. On CM10 ROMs,I have trouble locking onto GPS, and the fix for me has been downloading GPS test and running that before using something like navigation.it's a minor inconvenience but it works great
Overall, if you have something borked, no matter what rom you use... no matter how many times you wipe... odin back to stock, should fix it always.

True, but honestly, that doesn't always work. I have a second SGS3 Pebble Blue 32GB, and it won't play nice with Lean Kernel/Ktoonz, unless it's the touchwiz based kernels, whereas my white 16GB runs all of them flawlessly. They were rooted and booted the same way, and they both have the same GPS issue.
Out of curiosity, what's the chainfire way of going back to stock?
Also, do we have any guides here/on youtube that detail how to odin back to stock. I'm gonna give it a go on the blue one again/cross my fingers hoping I made a mistake, hence why I want a guide lol! *Searches*
thanks for the info jpk17!
saved us a lot of time here for whoever has that issue in the future.
can you provide the link to Chainfire's unroot procedure?
thanks!
Good to know but youcould have got straight to the point rather than writting five pages of useless stuff then saying something that to be honest is not any special invention anyways.

I love this thing!
The only time my gps was ever messed up was when i used a sprint leak JB rom and had the gps turned off. Flashed a couple roms after no gps whatsoever. Odin'ed with 2 or 3 different versions and still couldnt get the gps back.
Finally I flashed another JB rom based on the sprint leak and turned GPS back on and everything started working again. Lesson learned on using sprint leaks lol.
Had op's problem myself before, and full wiping and Odin'ing back to stock actually didn't work.. what did work though was after full unroot, doing tmo ota update.
Who knows, this info could help someone out as well..

Here is the procedure I followed to unroot...followed step by step and couldn't have been easier to follow:
I can't post links as I don't have over 10 posts yet, but should be able to figure it out from this:
www . androidrootz . com
Copy the next line after the .com and you'll get to the page.

Ok so i finally unrooted using above steps. Still no gps. Tried GPS Toolbox, GPS Test and the google navigation. Nothing.
What Im seeing is that the little Icon in the upper status bar never shows. Like ether it doesnt even see a SAT, or the receiver in my phone isnt even turning on.
If i cant figure out, i guess ill go back to Tmo....
Thanks for the help.
What I did was go to a stock ics based Rom then triangle away and then I followed the site that op posted. The download was ridiculously slow. Took like an hour for 690mb. That should do the trick. Do it in that order

HAHA funny, i actually did it EXACTLY like that. I tried a stock ICS ROM from wildchild and nothing. Then Triangle away, ODIN flash to stock with un root and factory reset and nothing.
If i wasnt getting lock, that would be different. But im not getting the little Icon in top left corner.
I have a friend with a Stock Sprint phone and his works in same room.
Thanks
Sucks cordell... Sorry you're not getting it working.
Only thought I had if I followed you correctly is you said you went to a wildchild stock. Maybe you need to go back to the older stock from the link that worked for osmosis and I?

I went to wild child stock just before i unrooted and went to Stock Tmo form the guide above. I didnt think that would have made a difference.
Im not gonna root and go to store, so ill go to store and see what they say.
The reason i went to the wildchild stock based ICS rom was hope that I wouldnt have to unroot....
Thanks.
EDIT>>> Just did the OTA from Tmo and back .. Yes GPS back,
Thanks minigame

[Q] 3G Data and signal help

Guys,
This might be a longshot, but I'm hoping someone might be able to give some advice.
I have the Epic 4G tough and had it flashed over to straight talk. At first it worked good(since Dec), but the 3G data speeds were never really there. Was getting a max of around 200-250k/sec, but things were pretty solid. Others around here with ST and flashed ST phones have been able to get 1.5+ Mb/sec speeds.
Did have a problem with the signal just disappearing and then coming back a few seconds later, even while in an area where I had 4+ bars. Just Poof, gone and then it would come back.
The phone did an OTA update a month or so ago and things were still working the same. I think a couple of ther updates might have happened in the past week because I heard my phone reboot a couple of times for no reason that I can find.
For about the past week though things have went all to crap on it.When 3G does connect I'm luckt to get 16k/sec. Still works great over wifi.
Here is my baseband version:
S710.10 S.FL24
Android version 4.04.
Does anyone have any advice that might help me out?
Thanks in advance.
I'm assuming that since you flashed over to ST that you are rooted? If so, have you updated your modem, prl, profile? There is also a thread on here where you can change your 3g settings using your MSL code, that may help you. From what I've read, sometimes OTA will jack with the 3g signal. Try those things and see if that held. You may have to flash different modems depending on where you live to find the best one. You're running ICS, I'd start in rwilco12's repository and flash the latest ICS modem, update prl and profile, and see if that helps. Good luck! Hope it works out

Unfortunately I had the phone remotely flashed by flashedphones.net and it isn't rooted.
It does have the newest ST PRL on it.
Could you possibly post a link for the MSL thread?
Looking over the repository and reading the thread about it, I see mention that there are ODIN 1 click modem files and someone mentioned that these will root the phone as well. Does anyone know if this is correct? If so that would be a great added bonus for me.
I think I can still flash a modem to the phone through ODIN even if it is not rooted?
Thanks!
Yes, you should be able to flash a modem without rooting using odin. If you can boot into download mode, Odin should flash just fine. However, in order to change 3g settings, you need to be rooted. You have to use terminal emulator(on the linked guide, there may be other ways) which requires rooting to have full control.

Here is the guide to get MSL code. Let me know if it works or not. And hit thanks if you think it helped at all! Good luck

Thanks done on both posts man. I really appreciate it.
I need to look through the root guide to see if there is a way to get this thing rooted without losingthe settings, etc.

First thing you'll want to look for is making a nandroid backup. The saying goes "if flashing breaks it, a backup should restore it".
You'll specifically want to look for recording your mms/mmsc/apn settings. Basically anything carrier specific settings that you can edit via the ##data# menu. Make sure you write them down and that way you won't have to hunt for them.
You'll need to know what your msl is as well. There are threads to help you get that.
When it comes to flashed over carrier devices, mms usually breaks and has to be edited for settings.
Check out threads that deal with, for example, Boost flashes and check their issues and expect the same to happen and you'll need to fix.

That's the first thing you do after rooting with a custom recovery.
One step at a time. Do your research, read and ask questions and you'll be good to go.
Tip, use Google to search the forum, the forum search can be confusing at best.

Grrr,Pancho you're too da*n fast for me! I actually knew the answer to that one. Throw a brother a bone will ya? Ha. On a serious note, Pancho is right. If you don't know what nandroid is, you're not ready to root. But once you do, you'll have the ability to flash a custom recovery that basically allows you to make a mirror copy of the current ROM you have. That way, if you mess things up, you can always reflash the custom recovery cwm, restore the ROM, and start over. Read, read, read. The folks here have encountered and answered about every type of issue.

Just had someone local take a good look at my phone.
Looks like it was a bad flash from the start.
Another flashedphones.net victim.
They want me to send it in to them so they can "fix" it.
The hell with that. I'll eat the money and get it fixed locally so that I have someone who actually knows what they are doing.

Thanks man.
Luckily this local guy is pretty good. I'm pretty sure he will let me watch so I might learn some things. Not interested in doint other peoples phones, but would like to learn so I can do my own stuff.
As far as flashing ROM's/ modems I'm comfortable with that. Just need more experience with the changing over to other services on them.
But hey, at least I have a pretty decent JB rooted rom on it now.
Has anyone played around with the radios and seen which ones seem to be pretty good in weak signal areas?

That you do(have a good jb rom, if you have jellyverse that is ). I'm using GB27 modem on mine. Works fine, but no modem I have will get goods signal in my office. Awesome that you'll get to watch live and in color. Let me know how it goes and if you need anything else. I may not know the answer, but can certainly find it or reach out to someone who does know.
