I've searched this whole forum (and learned a lot) but I'm still stuck!
I upgraded from Leedroid (Froyo) to InsertCoin (Gingerbread) but the upgrade failed and now all I get is the white HTC screen.
I have:
BRAVO PVT4 S-ON
HBOOT-0.93.0001
Clockworkmod v2.5.07 (installed when I rooted with unrevoked earlier this year).
I can access HBOOT, fastboot, clockworkmod, but not the main system.
I tried restoring from Nandroid. Had MD5 errors, but once I fixed those it still doesn't work.
I've tried RUU to no avail (Got error 170).
Tried flashing Leedroid via Clockworkmod, says it's successful but it makes no difference.
So, no Nandroid, no RUU, no ability to flash new roms. What else should I try?
Your suggestions are GREATLY appreciated
go to mounts & storage, format boot, system, userdata, cache.
go to flash zip from sdcard, and choose your ROM. Should work.
Aye, it just worked then - with an older version of Leedroid.
Do newer ROMs require newer versions of Clockworkmod? Or S-off? Because I have an old clockworkmod and S-on. Those are the only things I can think of that might have broken my Gingerbread installation (and caused the Nandroid restore to fail).
S-OFF and try flashing RaDesire, it's probably the best recovery for the Desire.
Also being S-OFF makes the phone a lot easier to "fix".. e.g. if your recovery mysteriously died and so did your system then you'd have to use a RUU to return to stock, then re-root or S-OFF again.. however with this you could just flash a new recovery. Simples.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=839621
they don't require a newer recovery.. it probably didn't boot because you didn't do a full wipe that's all.
My only hesitation with S-Off is that after screwing up this ROM upgrade I was thankful of that 'safety net'. But I agree that it would make things easier to fix. As long as I can get into the bootloader

Oh, I didn't see that post until I already started the process via Unrevoked. It seemed to work though. I have AmonRa Desire v2.
It's late here now though, so I'll try installing InsertCoin in the morning. Thanks for all your advice, greatly appreciated

Hey guys and gals,
This is my first post and i need some help. Here's the story.
I rooted my phone a few weeks ago, everything went stunningly easy, and worked great. Clockworkmod recovery was installed (by unrevoked) at this time. While driving home I broke my phone's screen and had to get a replacement phone. Asurion had a phone to me within 18 hours (my word they're fast). I slapped the 16GB SD card from my first phone in and I was off and running.
So I have my new phone with my original 16GB SD card and set it up normally again. I wanted to wait a bit and get it set prior to rooting again. Tonight I rooted the phone with Unrevoked 3.21 as I did before. It went much faster than before. I now have S-Off but clockworkmod recovery is not on my hboot screen and recovery mode doesn't work at all. Just a black screen for about 15 seconds before loading into the OS.
Have I screwed up a one click root? I've tried a few things.
I used droid-life as a guide to help me root.
Phone Stats:
Droid Incredible
Asurion replacement
OS 2.2
radio 2.15.00.07.28
kernel 2.6.32.15-gb7b01d1
build 3.21.605.1 CL231334 release-keys
Although clockworkmod recovery isn't in Hboot the reflash tool still says "Recovery Image: ClockworkMod Recovery" on the bottom. I have tried renaming the clockworkmod folder on the SD card to see if it would create a new one, or boot into clockworkmod recovery after realizing the folder is not there.
I have also tried formatting my SD card and running the reflash tool again. Again no dice, no recovery mode.
I have tried unrevoked 3.21 after every change.
What have I done? what do I do? any suggestions?
Thanks for anybody and everybody's input. I appreciate it. I would like to start flashing roms but really dont want to mess with it if I dont have a recovery option.
-MOJO
Is it a complete download of the unrevoked tool? Sounds almost like the recovery package isn't there. Try redownloading unrevoked and run it again. Do you have root and Superuser app at least? If so, try downloading and running ROM Manager and tell it to flash Clockwork again. Still no dice, try telling it to flash RA recovery. And for the record, which screen do you have?
I wish I knew

thanks for the quick reply I will try that. Yes I have root and the superuser app.
I dont know how to tell which screen I have, but I was wondering the same thing. BoyGeniusReport says its incredibly hard to tell the difference and I haven't found were it says SLED vs AMOLED
Grrrr

Downloaded unrevoked 3.21 straight from unrevoked twice.
Tried the reflashing clockworkmod recovery, no dice.
Whats an RA recovery?

It's an alternate recovery. Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=758874
It's also the second to the last option in ROM Manager. Flash Alternate Recovery: RA_GNM Recovery v1.7.6
I actually like that one better. It was able to format my SD card correctly. I just miss the integration with ROM Manager.
Phew... It worked.
the alternate recovery worked.
now if I want to flash ROMs do I need to know anything in particular before doing so with the AMON_RA recovery tool.
I downloaded the a4d utility that I found when doing a search for AMON_RA on appbrain. It asks if I want to flash my phone to unlock my bootloader (and void my warranty, haha).
do I need to unlock my bootloader before flashing ROM's
I like the sense UI. thats all I have actually used. Is there anything better? what are suggested, STABLE, ROMs/kernels for the DInc? or should I stay "stock 2.2 rooted"?

Uncommon sense with king kernel bfs # 5 is as good or better than stock.
Btw. Hboot only shows recovery, not clockwork recovery. Did you ever try selecting recovery from hboot?

Uncommon sense has some of it removed. Some of it you can remove yourself. It's the only rom I've donated to and had on my phone more than two days.
Just be careful if removing stuff. Some of it has other dependencies. There are guides on how to remove things safely without breaking other functionality.
Also do a backup first. I'm not sure how amon ra works, but it must be in there somewhere.

It is. In the main menu, just like Clockwork
So I definitely have recovery with the amon_RA 1.7.6 alternative recovery with the ROM manager. but from what I have read I can no longer use ROM manager to flash.
Now I have been searching for information/instructions on how to use AMON_RA but have come up short, at least recently written stuff. I can find a ton of information about clockworkmod which I assume is because of Unrevoked 3.21.
PonsAsinorem as you said you miss the integration of ROM manager. I really want to use ROM manager.
I read somewhere in XDA that people were having trouble using clockworkmod and ROM manager and it could be because of a corrupted cache. there were some LIMITED instructions about using ADB to fix it but I wasn't completely understanding them.
I think my problem is spawning from using my old SD card and maybe a corrupted cache. I have made a back up using Amon_RA (actually two).
Does anyone think that completely formatting my SD card (after moving my backups to my MAC) and factory restoring my phone. then reflashed using unrevoked 3.21, or reflashed clockworkmod recovery using rom manager would work to solve my problem with clockworkmod recovery?
I would have backups if it didn't work. I would just have to restore the Amon_RA backup if I screwed anything up or wanted my SD card back... Right?
Thanks for all the help so far.

Dirtpan. you're a lifesaver thanks for pointing me at this. saved clockwork for me. All this time, its because I have the new SLCD screen as opposed to the AMOLED screen.
For the record, my wife has an AMOLED screen and I an SLCD. I can see no discernible difference.

OK, so I'm a bit of a n00b here, and I need just a quick hand.
I'd flashed Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo a few days ago and was attempting to use metamorph to tweak the battery icon. Ran a Nand backup beforehand. Something went wrong with the metamorph and I was stuck in a bootloop afterwards.
So I hit power and held down on the volume rocker, hoping to get into my Nand.
Instead, it wouldn't let me select anything, went through its own update/recovery process, and now that it's done, I'm back to stock (complete with sprint bloatware) and totally unrooted. I DLed Rom Manager off the market and tried to get into Amon_Ra recovery, but it keeps telling me I don't have permission (thus I deduce I've lost root access.)
Is there anyway I can flash my Nand at this point, or do I need to go back through the rooting process?
Thanks for your help.

To get a recovery on your phone, you need to have root.
To get root need superuser permissions and/or nand unlock
To get nand unlock and superuser permissions you need to go through the rooting process.
If you've used unrevoked 3.21 and have S-OFF. You can flash recoveries and superuser permissions without having to go through any rooting process.
So I guess then what I need to understand is how would I go about flashing the superuser?
edit: at this point I've already gone through the whole rooting process, including unrevokedforever.zip and the additional ENG bootloader. I get into ROM manager, and go to recovery, but the clockworkmod recovery doesn't see my most recent backup. Reflashing to RA recovery, it finds it, but tells me I have to run the recovery via ADB. ???
Pretty sure what happened is that you left a stock pc36img.zip on your sd card, leftover from your rooting process. When you booted into hboot, it loaded it automatically and you must have hit update. Not sure what caused your bootloop though.
Check your sd card, and if theres a pc36img.zip on it, delete it. Look for the superuser app in your app drawer, and also check your hboot to see if you're s-off. If you are in fact back to unrooted stock, you can always run unrevoked to quickly root and then you can restore your nandroid, just make sure you have the same recovery that you used to make the nandroid.

When you go into the loader (Vol Down + Power) does it say S-Off in the first line?
If it does then you still have root and you can flash the custom recovery's .zip and you will be able to load back into recovery.
If you have S-Off read this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8285266&postcount=1

Definitely. So now I need to get my microSD card reader and remove it. Can do.
Any idea why both Clockworkmod and Amon_RA are unable to load my backup? Versions for RA should be the same, and I think the same for Clockwork as well.
OK, I deleted PC36IMG.zip, now it just stays stuck in bootloader.
looks like I'm hosed, but here's what I'm learning on Freeza's thread, where I DLed the PC36IMG.zip in the first place:
freeza said:
UPDATE: It appears as though everyone is getting stuck in bootloader after this procedure. You can get out of this by reflashing your current ROM (without wiping) and/or restore a nandroid backup. Some have reported errors when trying to restore a nandroid backup. YMMV
Karadorde has put together a package that works. Read his instructions below:
First and foremost it seems that if you get stuck in the Bootloader (no matter what method you are using) then your Nandroid backups are broken. I don't know that anyone has been able to successfully restore from one of those yet.
The file in the OP allows you to apply just the engineering HBOOT.img (hboot_0.76.2000.img) This works flawlessly for some but not so well for others.
The file in Post 71 and Post 91 allows you to apply a full PC36IMG.zip that contains the engineering HBOOT.img (hboot_0.76.2000.img) This is a fix for some who have gotten stuck in the Bootloader after using the file from the OP. At the same time this has also caused the some of the same issues people were having with getting stuck in the Bootloader from the OP. This file will not downgrade any part of your phone, however, it will wipe the phone. Also it is reported that it broke root on one phone. I believe this only happened to one person, need confirmation on if it happened to multiple.
If you get stuck in the Bootloader you can re-flash your Kernel to fix the issue. Not sure if this works with the stock Kernel or if you have to have a custom Kernel. Looking for feedback on this.
If you get stuck in the Bootloader reflash your current rom. Need feedback on this as well.

i do believe so, but someone correct me if im wrong, i do know when i unrooted a few weeks ago with the RUU i went to the newest hboot, but now that i'm rooted again im back to the ENG .76 version.
Running a RUU will put you at full stock, including radios and hboot.
If you are still stuck, try running the most current RUU and then rerooting.

Hi all
I have a HTC Desire which I initially rooted using the UnRevoked method. Using Clockworkmod Recovery, I began installing ROMs to my hearts content. Everything was perfect, and I was changing ROMs every few days, testing them out, trying to find the perfect ROM for me, restoring back to the one which was currently my favourite
Later, being a newbie, I discovered that when I try to use ADB to push apps to the phone, I realized my NAND was read only, and my phone was S-ON. I then used AlphaRev HBOOT to S-OFF my phone, and this is where things have taken a turn...
It seems that since I have done the S-OFF, I can install ROMs fine, I can back them up and restore them too, all with no problems or errors during the process. But now it seems that whenever I restore to any backup, when the phone boots up, it gets to the point where the screenlock is visible, and then once I unlock the screen, I seem to get loads of force closes for various apps popping up on the screen and not letting me do anything! I can no longer rely on my Clockworkmod backups anymore
Extra information:
HTC Desire S-OFF via AlphaRev 1.8 HBOOT, CWM-AlphaRev Recovery 2.5.1.8Problem seems to occur with 2 ROMs I tested after S-OFF. Currently running InsertCoin1.8h DHD ROM port, and my last backup of this ROM when restored gave same problem as above. Previously running Oxygen 2.0 RC7, last backup also gave force closes when restored. With the Oxygen ROM, I managed to solve the problem by re-flashing the original ROM zip without wipe, but all my customizations and themes are lost. When I flash any ROM, I always wipe using the "Wipe user data and cache" option, then wipe the Dalvik cache, and then flash. I do the same thing when restoring to any backed up ROM too. My phone is rooted, I have SU permissions, I can push files to /system/app via ADB without any errors, so it is S-OFF. I do not get any problems using the ROMs, they are fast and very fluid, I can install themes and zips cooked in UOT kitchen, other kernels, patches, etc. I have formatted my SD card 3 times, and re-partitioned it each time using ROM manager initially, and later Clockworkmod Recovery 3.0.0.5 (temporarily installed this recovery to create 1GB EXT partition, presumably on EXT4?)
Sorry for the huge dump of information, its just to provide as much information as I can, so to not frustrate anyone kind enough to help me (assuming you are not already frustrated because I asked a complete newbie question with a simple answer!)
Any ideas what the problem can be? I thank anyone in advance and really appreciate any responses

Initially I did not install the AlphaRev recovery, and was running 2.5.0.7. I think I still had the same problem, thats why I installed the AlphaRev. But honestly speaking, I cant remember properly, so I cant be sure. I will try other recoveries and post back.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Hello, I have successfully rooted my HTC Desire running android 2.2 with HBOOT V 0.93.0001 using the Unrevoked method. I Installed ROM Manager and installed ClockWorkMod V 2.5.0.7. I also made a backup.
The purpose was to install a custom ROM, in order to get rid of the Orange bloatware that is on the phone, as well as trying something new.
However whenever I try to instal any ROMS I get an error (Status 7 - installation aborted.)
I then updated the Radio to radio 5.10.05.30 and tried again, same error.
I've tried Cyanogenmod 7, as well as the Oxygen ROM and both aren't working.
I have spent most of today trying to get it to work, and googled alot however I just can't fix this error
Thanks.
you have to do a full wipe data and cache then go to advanced and erase dalvik cache. After all the above you can now install new rom. And if your trying to install new gingerbread you must s off your phone and then update the recovery to the latest one. which i believe is 3.2.0.2 i dunno something like that
When I do a factory reset it just says E: Can't find MISC
No app2sd partition found.
E:cant mount cache:recovery/log
etc etc
says the same thing with wiping the cache, although it does say "cache wipe complete"
when I select wipe Dalvik cache the screen just flickers and appears to do nothing...
What do you mean about updating the recovery, you mean the HBOOT?
Why can nobody answer this? I've literally been reading stuff ALL DAY just to fix this error, yet still can't solve the problem.
Didn't think installing a ROM could be so hard....
I get it you need to back everything up onto your pc from your sd card then go to market on your phone download rom manager and partition your sd with 512mb ext and 0mb swap. and then install any rom u like
Thanks for your help but that didn't work. Not sure what to do.
Which hardwarerevision does your desire have (boot into hboot and read the first line, number behind the word pvt)?
"bravo pvt4 shop s-on"
Just did a hard factory reset, installed ROM Manager and tried again, still didn't work
Also just tried to get my backup restored in the meantime (so I have contacts) oh no, "This does not seem to be a valid backup. The MD5 file is missing"
Can anything else possibly go wrong?
So your hardwarerevision is pvt4. You cannot use clockworkmod recovery and still less rom manager with this one. Download amonra recovery, integrate it in unrevoked (file>custom recovery>choose downloaded amonra recovery) and run unrevoked (like last time) again.
No warranty for any damage.
And a real good advice: Never use rom manager, it's a horrible software which mostly causes heavy and horrible problems!!! Run all operations directly in recovery instead.
Trying that now

Yes, there are known issues, especially the one you had, which is imho the most important and worst one, because you cannot flash anything.
This disclaimer was referred to me. But yeah, warranty of your provider should be okay if going back to stock.

Hi there. This might be a bit late but I think I finally find out hot to solve it. It is all because you haven't S-Off your mobile.
so m not goin to get a solution over this,.,.
Hi, I've researched this problem to exhaustion, but with no luck. Im hoping someone here has some insight.
I have an HTC Desire CDMA with:
Bravoc DVT2 SHIP S-off
Hboot 6.06.1002
Radio 2.15.00.11.16
Andriod 2.2
S offed with revolutionary and rooted with unrevoked.
I've tried 4 versions of clockwork mod (even the one revolutionary auto flashes), and every time I make a backup, it'll complete fine and restore fine if I restore it right away, but after I reboot the phone once every backup will have an MD5 mismatch error. I want to start using a custom ROM but I'm too afraid to flash it without a working backup.
Anyone have any advice?
Anyone have any ideas?
