Hey all....I've had my Touch Pro 2 for a few years now. Thinking about upgrading to this Samsung. Is it really worth it or should I wait a bit longer for the Galaxy III?
It's a beast, in my opinion go ahead and get the Epic 4G Touch. Worst case scenario, you have 14 days to decide if you like it... you can return it in the 14 day window if you don't. You have nothing to lose.
sounds like u might like a evo shift. i stay htc.

If you are thinking of waiting for the Galaxy III, then when it finally comes out, you'll just be thinking of waiting for the Galaxy IV. But thats just my logic, get it nows, no questions ask. Unless your thinking about the E3d or the photon.
If you can hold out this long with the TP2, then the Epic Touch should hold you over until the Galaxy VII phones are out. You are obviously a person of infinite patience.
As someone who jumped from the TP2 to the Evo 4G, I would say you should definitely do it. Android basically kills WinMo for every single task outside of voice command. And I mean, it slaughters WinMo. And I used to love WinMo.
If you still use your slideout keyboard all the time, your transition to touch KB could be rough, but I'd still give the Epic Touch a go since the screen (and threrefore keyboard) is so big. I rarely used my slideout on the TP2 (mostly because it froze most of the programs in the middle of the portrait to landscape transition), so I had very little learning curve going to full touch.
I wouldn't go to the Shift even though the form factor is similar. Wait for a dual core slider if you absolutely need one. The Shift is already long in the tooth.

I was exactly in your position but I pre-ordered and picked up my E4GT yesterday . The reason I went from SERO to SERO-P is because I am a fanatic of AMOLED displays and Samsung's are the best in the marketplace. The device was supposed to support USB HOST (out of box it does not) so I am disappointed and I can't take pictures while on a phone call, which is also odd. Otherwise, this device is a powerhouse. I remember how I had to wait for the Touch Pro 2 to boot and then wait for it to show the lockscreen before I could unlock the device. Now, the device boots so damn fast that my reflexes feel slower than the phone (I might be exaggerating). The TP2 though feels like Windows XP after 4 years of use and no re-installs and E4GT feels like Windows 7 fresh install. If you have any questions, I will be more than happy to answer.
Thanks for the replies everyone. I really like the look of this phone and felt it is prolly time to FINALLY upgrade. I'm familiar with android using an Asus Transformer. I wanted the EVO 3d but held off for reasons unknown. I think this is the ONE.
forgive me...I'm OLD
Nothing to forgive you for, you're just trying to make the right decision and I can't blame ya for that. It's a great phone
I really think you will love this phone! Ive had an apache » mogul » tp1 » tp2 » epic1 » now epic touch... See a pattern? Ive still got the tp2 but this epic touch, even the epic1 blows the tp2 away... And this is coming from a long time windows mobile user, give this thing a try, go on down to best buy lol

Check the new windows mango then come again.... the new windows is smoking.... and I love Android now, but let me tell you Skype built in, and such it is going to start heating up very soon with these phone OS systems!
I just can't believe you have been using a TP2 for this long. Don't get me wrong, when I was with Verizon and it first came there I thought I was in heaven but 15 phones later i can't imagine still using it but I admire your loyalty but my god man..I mean..MY GOD MAN!
I was in the same boat last year, upgraded from SERO TP2 to SERO Premium with a Epic 4g. Don't miss my TP2 one bit.
I'm sure the Epic Touch is even better.
Do it!
Yeah man, I had the tp2 as well. it has been sitting in it's cradle charger for over a year. I did use it for a minute, as a temporary phone while waiting for a replacement for a lost epic 4g. When I did, I hated it. I love my epic compared to it. I can't wait till the touch comes in the mail. I will never go back to windows phones. Android is so ahead of the game and getting better by the minute. Until the nexus prime comes out, the epic touch 4g will be the best phone on the market and only the prime will compare for a while. Even with the software holdups that the galaxy s line has had, I wouldn't have traded my current phone for any other one until now.

I also just upgraded from TP2 to this, and yeah, you won't regret it. The only thing that bugs me is this phone is too thin & light, lol. After carrying around the brick of the TP2, I always knew I had it when carrying it in the same hand as my laptop (which is a lot). I could drop the epic and not even realize it.
thats like comparing the dreamcast to PS3

It's all relative...
phonedog.com/2011/09/16/samsung-nexus-prime-ice-cream-sandwich-and-galaxy-s-iii-details-emerge/
"Reportedly set for a debut at MWC 2012 and a worldwide launch in mid- 2012, the GSIII is said to feature a 4. 65-inch "Super AMOLED III" display with a resolution of 1280x1024 and 352ppi. Other features slated to make it into the Galaxy S III include a 2.0 GHz quad- core processor, 32GB storage, 1.5GB RAM, 10- megapixel camera, 1080p video capture at 60fps, 2,250mAh battery, and ICS beneath "TouchWiz 5." This new version of Samsung's skin is supposedly co-developed by Google and is less "intrusive" than previous versions of TouchWiz."
The GSIII will be a QUANTUM LEAP and leapfrog the current pretenders.
By next summer the Epic 4G Touch will be the Winmo device of its time‚ contemptuously sneered at by those with the then latest & greatest.
Count on it.
22 Months
I'll jump in and take a bashing with the OP. I too, am coming from a Touch Pro 2 as well. It's been a longgg 22 months. It's night and day the difference in technology then. I actually was eligible to upgrade for the Photon, which I did upgrade to; but then promptly returned it as I knew it was only a matter of time before the "Within" was released once it passed through the FCC.
I honestly think that in another 20 months when I can upgrade again, technology will once again dwarf what's out there today. But at least I think the design of the phone won't be that different. Just like the OP, I don't think either of us chose to keep the TP2 this long. It's just our upgrade time. Now if only Letstalk would actually ship it!
It's like comparing a PDA to a new tablet

Those specs don't even make sense. A phone with a 4:3 aspect screen? The screen alone would be 24.5mm wider than the body of the Epic Touch. It would be almost as wide as the Evo 4G is tall.
Someone is pulling someone's leg.
You're not going to get a 3 generation leap in less than a year.

Hey,
I have Verizon and currently have a XV6800 (Titan). I have loved the phone, I got it the first week it came out and it has never let me down. I flashed it when the ROMs first came available, and I use all the features the phone has: keyboard, touchscreen, bluetooth, GPS, Wifi, etc...
My contract expires on the 11th of this month, and I've been due for a phone upgrade for quite some time now. I can get the TP2 for $99 with no other fees, because I work for Goodyear and we have a corporate thing set up with them.
My question is: should I get the TP2? It's obvious that there's a lot of custom ROMs out there and the hardware looks great. I just don't want to buy this phone and another one come out a month from now that's better. I understand that phones are always being released and they become outdated weeks after their purchase, but I don't want to miss out on anything cool.
-Randy
If you love your Titan that much, I don't know what's stopping you from upgrading to the TP2. It's the Titan on steroids with a gorgeous 800 X 480 screen. The keyboard is much improved as well (I had that keyboard with the grid layout on my Mogul, and I barely used it). In fact, the soft keyboard even much improved and usable. Battery life is also improved.
The only real drawback from the Titan is the lack of a DPad (VolDPad does a pretty good job of turning the volume rocker keys into a DPad).
BTW, video playback on the TP2 is outstanding (TP2 does full DVD resolutions). Totally kicks ass over the iPod.
There will always be something better/newer coming down the road. Could be a month... could be 6... couid be 12 months. I don't think we'll be getting really new in the short term.
The TP2 is far and away the best WM phones I ever handled. I ver glad I moved to it from my Kaiser. Heck I'm glad I skipped the original TouchPro and waited for the TP2.
The HD2/Leo looks nice but not being able to use a stylus and lack of a keyboard just might keep me away. I like writing hand written notes in my note pad.
The other thing too is that the Touch Pro 2 just came out, so it should be quite a while until it is surpassed (but 3 months ago if you were to ask to buy a Touch Pro, I'd easily tell you to wait b/c of the Touch Pro 2...that and Verizon nubbed up the TP1 with locking the GPS and removing RAM). I'd say go for it!
Jason
Thanks for the good info.
Does this phone have a dedicated graphics accelerator?
I went from an XV6800 (titan) to a Tilt2 on AT&T...
Network sucking issues aside, the TouchPro2 is a GREAT phone and an amazing upgrade the the Titan.
I stayed away from the original TouchPro/Fuze phones because I didnt think they were a massive upgrade, only more RAM which helped run TF3D, but no WinMo6.5, and not much in terms of real improvement.
I love WinMo6.5, I love the TF3D 2.1, and the ram and speed of the new Tilt2 is noticeably faster than a Titan.
Oh, and did I mention the AMAZING screen improvement?
Upgrade. You wont be disappointed.
I was on a mogul, which then i went to the touch pro, and now I'm on the touch pro 2. The single biggest upgrade from the mogul, to the touch pro was the ram. Running Opera Mobile on the mogul was hell. It's a great browser on the touch pro although i preferred the speed of opera mini. The other big improvement was the resolution/ lack of recession on the screen. Notice how it's rather difficult to hit the task manager button on the top right of the screen? That was fixed in the touch pro.
The biggest improvements from the touch pro to the touch pro 2, for me, have been the increased screen size and the keyboard. The Keyboard is ****ing amazing. No more of those little bubble keys that were present in the mogul/touch pro. I still haven't heard anyone talk about the change from bubble keys, to actual keys that depress when you press down on them. Sure the offsetness and size of the keys is great, but the fact that they are actual buttons that depress when pressed sold me. The speaker phone is much nicer as well.
Don't forget that you also will get all the latest TF3D stuff as well until a new dominant resolution comes out (or we simply can't run it because of lack of clock speed). I'm currently running TF3D 2.5 and it adds loads of improvements over TF3D 2.1. The only problem currently with 2.5 is that it's sluggish in some areas such as the landscape transitions on music/pictures.
All in all I'd say hell ****ing yes to a mogul-to-pro2 upgrade. There was a big enough difference to ditch the mogul for the touch pro alone. Ram was always the biggest pain on the mogul, and now I can't find myself ever running out of ram even while leaving everything open. I don't have to fight with the device to have it do what I want it to do.
See.... I get all these good reviews from you guys here, and you're all saying "Go for it!" Then, I go in the Verizon store too look at it, and they don't have it. I guess none of the stores have them on display, and I have to have it shipped. On top of that, the sales guy convinced me to come in Friday morning to see the new Motorola Droid when it's released. They're gonna be the same price.... so I don't know what to get now...
No Vzn stores ever got the new phone. Yea the Droid looks like it can be quite nice, but at my heart I'm still a WM user at least for now (Android is probably my 2nd bet, then maybe WebOS, and the OSX mobile isn't an option for me).
If you want to play with one, go to a T-Mo or AT&T Store. My sprint store near me (and its a big one, with a repair center and everything) still doesn't have TP2's yet either :-/

You know what... I'm ordering the TP2. Windows Mobile isn't perfect, but there's a huge community on here for it, and Android is new and still isn't quite perfect.
It's just like running any distro of linux on your computer. Sure, there's a lot of great versions out there, but none of them are perfect, and when something screws up, there's not always an easy fix.
One more thing about the TP2:
If you want to run emus, the offset keyboard gives you a reasonable rendition of a Dpad. Diagonals won't work, but it's more than adequate for JRPGs or any game that doesn't require twitch action.
I use W,A,S,D as a Dpad.
just wanted to update everyone who gave me their input - I got the TP2 and I'm in love with it. There's nothing I've tried to do thus far that I haven't been able to do. I've tried a few ROMs on it and I'm on the latest MightyROM right now ad it's great. Thanks again for the input guys!
A question for my fellow Rhodium owners: What phone do you plan on (with the information on hand) going to next?
I'm on AT&T, and won't switch for many legacy reasons. I feel like there's no good options at this time. If I want to stay Windows Mobile, I either lose HTC or the keyboard, neither of which seems like an upgrade to me. If I go Android, the only good keyboard HTC phone is the Desire Z, and AT&T hasn't announced it yet. I want to stick with HTC on AT&T, but it looks like if I need a keyboard, it's LG WinPho7, or Samsung Android. Are there any better options? What are the rest of you, devotees of the amazing tilt keyboard form factor, planning on doing with this next generation of phones?
MS is unveiling Windows Phone 7 today, and a whole slew of phones have been announced for ATT, Sprint, and T-Mob. Many of the handsets will be available in the next couple months. WP7 is still an unknown. But MS has dumped lots of $$$ and time into its development. It remains to be seen if the new OS can compete with iOS4 and Android, but its worth considering.
Phonedog says the phones have appeared on ATT's website, but I can't find them. The HTC offering from ATT seems like an odd form factor, with a slide-out speaker instead of a keyboard. Multi-media is nice, but it doesn't trump the functionality of the keyboard, for me.
http://www.phonedog.com/2010/10/11/htc-surround-samsung-focus-lg-quantum-appear-on-at-t-s-site/
Sprint may have gotten the best successor to the TP2, in the form of the 7 Pro. Considering the name, this may be the "real" successor to the Touch Pro line. Looks like it even includes the tilt screen, and the 5th row of keys for the numbers; features which are both missing from HTC's recent keyboard-toting Android options (Desire Z and the T-Mobile G2).
http://www.phonedog.com/2010/10/11/htc-announces-five-windows-phone-7-devices-including-7-pro-for-sprint/
Assuming WP7 is up to the hype, we can hope and pray a version of the 7 Pro will come to ATT. But I'll bet we are in for a wait, if we get it at all. I'm in the same boat, as I am on ATT and don't plan to switch anytime soon.
Yeah, the HTC Surround, with the slide out speaker, seems useless. The sliding form-factor makes the phone really thick compared with a standard touch phone, and without a keyboard, there's not enough of a trade-off.
Thank you for posting the link to the 7 Pro, which seems like the best phone I've seen all year, and definitely the perfect successor to the Touch Pro 2. Given the Tilt's history with AT&T, I'm going nuts here that AT&T isn't getting it, at least not yet. Please, HTC, promise me it's coming!
I'm going to have to upgrade in the next six months if I don't hear about a "coming soon" keyboard phone that's going to make it work waiting a little longer, so somebody better start leaking info...

Look at that 7 Pro...
My goodness...thats my next. Without a doubt, although they say it's only coming to Sprint in the US, hopefully they will make an unlocked/gsm version. I'm on Tmo and I've never had 3G since before the TP2 I have the TyTn2. I don't think HTC would be that ignorant as to not release the 7 Pro on a GSM carrier in the US, It would make absolutely no sense.

I agree. I can't find any sales figures, but the Touch Pro 2 occupies a very important business professional niche in the market, and HTC would be ill-advised to abandon it. Expecially when they've already got an amazing design, it wouldn't make sense to limit yourself just to Sprint. After all, Sprint exclusives aren't exactly tearing up the market.
htc 7 pro. looks niice.
linky.
Nothing I've seen so far has the same 5 row killer hardware keyboard as the TP2 so far (including the Desire-Z). It really is unsurpassed. At the same time, capacitive screens, touchscreen keyboards and the predictive algorithms behind them have got so much better than when the TP2 was designed, and we have Swype as well.
Based on this fact, it isn't necessarily a compromise to move away from a hardware keyboard nowadays. It depends on what you find important on your phone. I like photography and browsing on a large display and it'll be great to have a decent camera on me wherever I go. My next phone will probably be the Motorola XT720 Milestone as a result.
Touch pro 7 looks good but why the hell did they give it only a 3.6' screen? With the size of the phone they could have easily stretched the screen size to 4' or made it 3.7' at least, so it doesnt look like a downgrade for us TP2 owners. If that screen was 4', I would have been tempted to go for a WP7 phone but for now I still want to go 'De Android Way'
Right now, I have lost my interest in the Desire Z cos of the delays issues we have here in Europe. I would have gone for the Samsung Epic but we are not getting here so for now I will be putting off my next phone purchase for about 8 months or so, say June 2011.
Right now I am not sure what my next phone will be. I already have a HD2 along with my TP2 and Touch HD. I prefer WM but I rather wait on WM7 until one of our Great Chefs/Developers port it for the HD2 so I can evaluate the OS
it should be HTC 7 Pro
My two bits.
I knew wm phones before and had decided never to make the same mistake of having one as my main phone again. The only thing that changed that was the full qwerty 5 row keyboard.
I will only change to a much better processor, and i repeat MUCH better, no smaller screen, larger battery (don't care if the phone gets bigger) and multi touch screen.
Again much much better processor
i went from a tilt 2 to htc evo. i love my evo but i miss my tilting screen and keyboard dearly. it would be more forgivable if the evo supported blue tooth hid keyboard support but stock rom does not and the only ROM that does, which is very popular, is a ROM that i don't like, aka cm6.
i poked around here tonight to see exactly what the op was after and i don't think we have anything in the future like some of want.
another thing is that i have pleged that i will not have another wm phone, me and my family stuck with wm since 8125 and we now have the same out look as m$ when it comes to wm. this is the only reason for stipulating aos.
here is my dream phone
aos
4.3 led capcitive
slide/ tilting keyboard
2 cameras
1 ghz plus cpu
dedicated gcpu
1GBram
16GB internal
sd external
bright leds on back for flash and light
it needs to stay thin and have good sound and battery life, lol
plus all the other things we have come to expect from a smart phone.
price: less than $500
basically, touch pro + evo + some upgrades.
Im also wondering what my next phone will be. Im afraid to switch to android for fear its too 'dumbed down' compared to what Im used to, but it appears theres enough android hacking going on that it will probably be fine. I use outlook sync and know that can be a pita with android.
Im also afraid WP7 may be too dumbed down as well. No 3rd party multitasking and cut and paste? what are they thinking?
Anyway, love the looks of the 7 pro, but am I reading it correctly that it doesnt have a microSD slot? that cant be right
Sounds like my dream phone... and u know its possible, but will they make it?? And for all the carriers like the galaxy did... of course not, they feel the need to keep us asking for more

well i always like phone that you can use with one hand.. hint hint t-mobile shadow 1, the touch pro2 was a nice switch but the t-mobile shadow had some advantage over it with it compact qwerty key pad, to sum it up the dell venue might be my next purchase... looking at the touch pro 7 spec it looks like Microsoft hint the jack pot using the first gen of snapdragon processor to power these deceive without having to use the second or third line up of snapdragon processor.
with that being said i feel like there not going to pull an iphone on me.... dell venue S, dell venue 2 SS, dell venue's SS 2.5, dell venue 3G, dell venu.... well u get the point
does anybody know if the dell ven going to support nextflic
The 7 Pro is amazing hardware, but the OS kills it. I just hope HTC brings the form factor to Android.
Hi all,
My Touch Pro 2 died a few days ago and I'm seriously considering a jump to Sprint and the Epic 4g. I was wondering if there are any former TP2 owners here, and what your experience has been jumping from one to the other.
I've been actively involved with the XDAndroid project and running Android on my TP2 for several months up to the demise of my phone so I don't really need an OS comparison.
I'm more interested in a comparison of the hardware and aesthetics. IMO, the TP2's keyboard is the best keyboard in the history of smart phones and was definitely one of my favorite features of the TP2. How does the Epic 4G keyboard stack up?
Welcome fellow TP2 user
Epic keyboard is solid compared to the TP2. Key layout, button feel, and clicks are a bit different and may take some getting used to, but all in all, on par with TP2's keyboard.
Some users have had issues with keys skipping when typing really fast, but that can be remedied with a patch by theimpaler747.
Keyboard on epic has more real-estate too.
i also went from the tp2 to the epic
the tp2's keyboard is the best one ever (imo) but the epics is not that bad once you get the feel for it. It does have an issue but if you install the fix that ghostrid3r mention made by impaler then that will fix it.
The rest of the hardware is great . After you start using the epic you will really think that the tp2 is slooooowww.

Hey Toad, as an old TP2 user, I can say the Epic holds up pretty well keyboard wise. The TP2's keyboard was a bit bigger and spaced nicely but I didn't have too much of a problem switching over. Sammy did slack with recent updates slowing down key responce on the Epic, but as ghost said above, flash the impaler's patch and you'll be good to go.

As an old touch pro 2 user myself you will not mess your touch pro 2 at all. With the official android gingerbread right around the corner. You won't be missing your touch pro 2. Question what did you use your touch pro 2 for. This phone is probably 5 times faster than the touch pro 2. The screen is way better, the graphic processor is faster this phone has 4G. Brighter screen, more better potential, newer software in the market, better text to speech. I must admit windows mobile has better voice command but android is catching up. I also miss TomTom from windows mobile too. Other than that android beats windows mobile hands down with everything else. This is probably the best android phone on sprint right now. The camera is also better too. If you do get the samsung epic get launcher pro plus with beautiful widget and you won't miss HTC Sense at all. I must admit in my opinion touch wiz sucks. The HTC Sense on the touch pro 2 is better than touch wiz 2. But Laucher pro and beautiful widget is way faster than HTC Sense. The custom rom are also a lot faster than the stock roms. You can also try out the leaked gingerbread rom for the Samsung Epic you can play Netflix movies and they fix the screen rotation problem too.
Thanks for the replies folks! I've been looking at other carriers and phones. Verizon is ridiculously expensive, AT&T is the reason I'm leaving T-Mobile and the other slider devices Sprint offers don't quite compare to the Epic, so it looks like the Epic will be it.

you want the truth? My last device was a tp2. Now I haz epic. Best transition ever. No early lcd fails, no chrome flaking, no lack of hmmph! on the gpu. Lol. I love epic.
Going from tp2 to the epic is like going from a 1989 ford contour to 2011 nissan gt-r.in terms of speed, size, and everything

Well if the TP2 is an 89' Ford Contour, then the phone I'm using while waiting for my Epic (I ordered it!) is a unicycle with a flat tire.
Any suggestions? Almost up to my upgrade, need some advice
Thanksl

E4gt by a long shot. Smoother ,longer battery life!
The epic 4g touch by a long shot. Samsung focused on software amd hardware instead of a gimmick like the 3d did and the nexus 4g is a great phone but it's out of date hardware wise.
Lots of other reasons, but those are the biggest ones.

Evo 3D isnt even used as a benchmark when comparing newly released phones, almost as if it is "old" hardware", such as the Nexus 4G Epic Touch IS the best device of 2011, IMHO it will beat out the Galaxy Nexus as well, once we have official ICS anyway. But by then HTC's Quad Core device will drop, making the Epic Tough "old hardware" If you want today's top of the line device, then its Epic Touch FTW!
I disagree on the evo3d not being a benchmark. A nexus feels slow compared to either of the other 2 other phones. When it comes to comparing a et4g and evo3d, u almost have to spend a week just you figure out what screen u prefer (i know people say a evo3d looks washed out when side by side). Truth of the matter is that both screens are terrific and depends on ur style. As for power, its like racing 2 new street bikes, both are plenty fast and to me, speed isnt a issue. The new sg2s actually has the same processor (almost) as the 3d. Now it comes down to the joy of using, and i pick sense everytime. Htc has of nice widgets that play well with sync'n ur accounts. Facebook is fully intergrated with everything. At the end, both phones dont leave much to be desired. U will be completely happy with a evo3d or et4g. Ill also add that the et4g takes.better pics, but also not 3d (so ur choice). To me 3d is great but i would trade cameras with the et4g if i could. I think the evo3d screen is way more responsive and feels alot better and smoother to use. This might not be a issue if u have never owned a sensitive device.
***i left out bugs and battery life because of it being a misleading issue. Xda is full of whinners who complain about every detail on both devices. Fanboys lie about battery life on both devices. Both make it thru the day and charge it at night.
No question the Epic Touch. I have had all three these phones. The EVO-3D was a major let down for the successor to the classic EVO 4G. I returned it after two weeks.
Bought the Nexus-S 4G and it was a cool little phone. Nice screen. Lightweight. Fast for single core.
Last week picked up the ET4 and man this thing feels and looks like a next gen device compared to those other two. Like those other phones feel years old. The ET4 has an amazing screen. Very thin. Lightweight...ridiculous long battery life. And the good ROM's are finally coming out.
For Sprint this is hands down their best device.

I agree, my Wife still has the Nexus and compared to my ET4 it is a huge difference. And this phone is much thinner which I really like.

there are issues with EVERY phone. The prime will have its fair share of issues, hell, they just rolled out an ETA for nexus users to fix a volume but.
I wouldnt take any other phone except for the galaxy note. and even thats too big. The et4g will be in my hands for at least the next 6 months. its THAT good. Had the nexus, evo3d, tried the photon, there is no comparison whatsoever.
Also, no point in waiting on new phones, because guess what, after you wait, then finally make a purchase, something better is going to come out 2 months later.
This is a great phone and you will love it. It is super thin but doesnt fell cheap. It is much lighter than the Evo (I have held the 3D so I cant compare). Very fast and the screen is beauty. You can even see it clearly in daylight at a medium black light setting.
The only issue I am having with it is when I play a game on it it just closing the app because of a sound issue.
Here is the posting on google about the problem:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=17623
And here is the possible solution to the issue:
http://www.grayfinstudios.com/post?id=ag1ncmF5Zmlud2ViYXBwcgwLEgRQb3N0GIHuBQw
But even with that problem the phone is still wonderful. I was looking at the Sprint forum a few nights ago and Samsung and Sprint are suppose to be working on a fix. But you know how that goes.
ive tried them all. epic 4g touch is bar far the fastest and best battery
Epic Touch 4G by a very long shot. The device is super fast and the stock rom is very well rounded. I am a flash-junky, and while my device is rooted, I am still running the stock rom. Even the default launcher is great, although I still prefer ADW Launcher. The device runs full flash and never laggy no matter what sites I go on. Even adult sites (just to test of course ). I can play every video type I've tried with the stock video player. Even AVI and MKV. Even things that my netbook has trouble running, the E4gT runs without a problem.

I have the E4GT, gave my Evo 3D to my wife. Nexus is coming out with new model called Prime.
E4GT vs Evo 3D = E4GT for sure.
Keep in mind E4GT has bugs for some people (including myself) loss of service and games crashing, a fix is "supposed to be coming soon". Even with this bug, I choose E4GT.
E4GT vs Nexus Prime:
Every aspect Nexus wins for me with BIG except the camera.
Note that in camera world 8mp vs 5mp doesn't matter, it's the lense. From the international version of Nexus Prime, the camera sux. This is a deal breaker for me because I take an average of 100-200 pics every month (like they say, the best camera is the one you have with you when you need it). UNLESS the Nexus Prime coming to Sprint I would guess around jan or February improve the quality of camera, I decided based on that.
Today's winner is E4GT. Tomorrow's winner is pending for me. If only I knew the improved Nexus Prime would be coming to Sprint, only then 100% Prime. Or if camera Quality is not important to you, 100% wait and get Prime...
IMHO
I've been with HTC Evo, 3D, and LTE and thinking about jumping over to Sammy when I get my upgrade in 5 months. I figured both HTC and Sammy will have just about the same specs when they release their next phones and I just wanted to know everyone's experience with dealing with Sammy.
I have been with HTC with 4 phones starting with the original Touch Pro. Before that I had a Samsung Instinct (Yuck). The TP was terrible. The TP2 was better. The phones got progressively better as I moved along. I am sure that the EVO LTE is a very nice phone. It was a tough decision between HTC and Samsung but I went with the GS3 for the extra RAM and removable battery.
I have been very happy with my decision. The GS3 has been the best phone ever.

i have personally been with Sammy a while (Epic (Galaxy) Epic Touch (Galaxy S2) and now the S3. Haven't had any issues at all with them. Dev support has been awesome (Tho i hear Sammy isn't very dev friendly and can be a pain to work with) But overall i've loved all 3 of my Sammy's i have had. (In fact all have been passed to other members of my family and are still in use!)
HTC wise, I have personally never owned them, However wife has.. Battery goes quick with Sense it seems. They have a clean UI for sure. But overall phone specs seem to be lacking imo. (Should have more ram for that fancy interface!!!) But either are good phones. As long as they offer what your looking for and meet your personal needs. Go the direction your comfortable with. (Both seemingly have great dev support.)
I just recently made the switch to the gs3. I've owned the OG evo, evo 3d, and the evo lte. I swore I would never go back to Samsung but I am very happy with the gs3. The lte was a decent phone but to me it felt like it was a rushed product and there were certain things like multitasking and a wonky proximity sensor that really started driving me nuts. I may get the next evo but definitely not on launch day. In my opinion HTC really dropped the ball.
My first actual smart phone was the original Epic 4g which I loved. The only problem I had with it was my 4G radio stopped working. Sprint gave me a refurb which had some hardware defect that was causing it to lockup on the stock ROM and every other ROM I flashed, but after my next replacement I had no problems until I finally retired it for my SGS3. The dev and community support for it at the time was amazing and I never had trouble rooting/flashing ROMs on it or my SGS3.
Their phones are good quality too, I've dropped my Epic and SGS3 countless times with nothing more than the bezel getting chipped up and a scratch on the Epic that turns invisible once the screen is on (I actually saw the ballpoint pen stab test on YouTube, so before returning my 2nd one due to the defect, I tried it out... stabbed the screen as hard as I could with the pen tip numerous times and the screen was still flawless.. it actually knocked all the dust and grime out from the bezel and was cleaner than before lol).
My only negative comment about their phones is TouchWiz (Samsung's launcher) but with the SGS3, it's actually pretty good and I'm running a stockish ROM. The stock ROM is just bloated with apps that I don't use or want, but that's true across most phones/carriers and they put in some pretty weird features that aren't easily disabled, the most annoying being the "Let me turn your screen on EVERYTIME you get a text message!". But there are replacement SecMMS.apks for that.

I have had fairly good luck with high end samsung phones. I had the moment and swapped it for a hero because the moment blew.....
but I have had the epic the sgs2 and now the s3 which were great phones. the evo 3d wasn;t too bad as long as not stock firmware... Htc is kinda slacking their phones are getting worse and worse... you made the right choice with the S3
Thanks guys, I'm finding it kinda hard not to switch since HTC won't update the Evo LTE, but they still have about 5 months to sway me back.

I hear you! I got sick of reading that "Jellybean today" bs thread for the Evo LTE. I had an upgrade available and on Black Friday I used it and sold them my old 3D for $50...so I only paid sales tax!
The first Sammy I had was the Instinct. Then I went with HTC...Hero, OG Evo, 3D, Evo 4G LTE. This SGS3 is the real deal bro! Never thought I would leave HTC as I am a big fan of Sense and I always heard how lame touchwiz was. Not sure about other versions, but touchwiz on this phone is pretty cool I think. Very happy with my switch back to Samsung!

Had positive experience with their device.
No shortcomings other than the fact that their material used can feel a bit cheap.

Samsung isn't dev friendly? Since when? HTC isn't dev friendly at all. Samsung doesn't lock bootloaders and have been releasing source right around the same day OTAs rollout. The only security Samsung implements in the bootloader is the binary flash counter. There's no need to find and exploit to gain full access to the device unlike HTC, Motorola and LG who all try their damndest to prevent customers from rooting their devices. I'd say aside from nexus devices Samsung is the most dev friendly out of all of the major device manufacturers.

I've never owned a samsung before the s3. I've had a lot of htc phones though. I had the touch pro, touch pro 2, hero, evo 4g, and was pretty happy with their build quality physically, except the touch pro, that phone just shattered. what i can tell about the samsung so far is that the interface and software just aren't there. the keyboards don't even have functioning t9 apparently. my phone would tend to freeze, sometimes every 5 minutes requiring a reboot. i hard reset it to no avail. i rooted it, got rid of most of the bloat, still froze. hard reset again and again, nothing. it was a complete headache out of the box. i switched to a custom rom and all is good. i'm not into custom roms but it seemed like the only option. anyways, i dunno... so far, i finally have a working phone after a week of struggling with it. the default sounds are awful. there isn't even an alarm that i can wake up to, and the whistle and water drops just annoy me. so those had to go as well.. i put my evo sounds on there, with a mix from the touch pro sounds, and an alarm from my blackberry, and i'm good to go. i'm a very picky person though so i understand if people don't mind being whistled at when they get an email, but that's not for me.

Yeah, I'm picky too. I love everything about HTC, but the lack of support. They basically put out a new phone with ics then a few months later they push out a different sense ics for the 3d. They push out a one x+ and droid dna, but won't push jb in the us other than those two. But man I do like sense over touchwiz and a bit over aosp. Now, a third leak about jb, it's like having a girlfriend who cheats on you, promises never to do it again, and cheats on you with the pizza boy and the mail man. Five months for HTC to change.
yeah htc seems to be more into creating new stuff than supporting their older hardware. i waited forever for ics on my og evo, but that never happened. they wouldn't even release a front camera driver for us haha
but yeah.. samsung is ok, just not my preference. i've spent too many hours just trying to make it livable, but it's working out pretty well now. there's just certain things that bother me, but at least the battery comes out.
