On my Epic 4G, I could hold down the power button and get an option to disable data mode. However, I don't see this option on the EPT4G.
Are there any third party apps that provide this option?
UPDATE: I found the option to turn 3G data off down in the wireless & network/mobile network settings.

You know I thought it was weird that my NS4G never had that option. I was always able to toggle to 2G only on my N1 if I wanted to save battery.

My wife has a problem with her EVO. Not so much with the EVO itself, but with Sprint service.
Within the building she works, she has terrible reception. Because of this, if she leaves mobile internet enabled, after a 6 hour day, her battery will be at 30%.The battery status says that she spent 60% without signal. I did do the "trick" to change her phone from GSM to CDMA using that diag menu from the dial menu, but again, the issue with her is that when she is deep in her building, she doesn't have any reception.
And of course, if she disables mobile internet before she gets to work, her battery is just fine when she leaves work.
Now, I am aware that you can either hold down the power button and turn it off and/or go into the options and enable it. We use LauncherPro, so we lost the ability to add the HTC sense mobile internet toggle widget.
Here are a few questions:
1. Does the Locale application work on the EVO, and if so, does it allow you to turn on/off mobile internet on a CDMA phone based on your location?
2. Is there a widget for the HTC EVO that lets you turn on/off mobile internet that works if you're not using HTC sense? The few I've found don't appear to work on a CDMA phone, or had reported problems.
just out of curiosity... You can't use the power button because your launcher does not have that feature? ... or you are looking for an automated way?
Does verizon have better coverage there? You could always try using their towers.
Locale does indeed work on the Evo, however it might be because I don't have the specific plugin, but i don't see any parameters to just turn off mobile internet. I think you can alternatively turn on wifi and have it auto connect to wifi at her work if they have it, since having wifi connected turns off mobile internet.
Another alternative is settings profile, which i haven't used myself but from the description it looks like it functions like locale, but also has a widget.
Lastly, when I need to toggle mobile internet, i'm using switchpro widget, which does have a toggle for mobile internet, as well as 4g and a few other options.

How do you use their towers but wouldn't that be roaming ??
Try Timerrific. It let's you use time base profiles to enable and disable stiff and its free.
I use a widget called Dazzle.

Yes. Which is free. I do this all day every day. Where I work, service for both Sprint and Verizon suck. However I usually have one or the other and it will pick whichever one is better. Also, in the metro tunnels (subwway in Washington DC), Verizon has great service so I maintain a connection through them almost the whole way home.
Menu > Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks
- Check data roaming
- Uncheck the guards and the sound
- Click Roaming and set it for automatic
Anyway to turn off 3g in our cdma phones. Might save a lot of battery.

turn off "mobile network" and just use wifi at home?
I've read that the phone constantly searching for 3G and/or using 3G is a big battery drain. Also that unless you require the bandwidth you can do just fine with 2g. There are apps on the market to let you switch 3g off but the ones I found don't work with cdma phones.
Turning mobile network off like said above will turn off 3g...

Doesn't it turn off 2G or edge also. I want data when I don't have wifi. I also thought the phone switched off mobile network when connects wifi automatically.
If you hold the power button and turn off mobile network it turns off 3g. It goes to 1x and you basically receive text and phone calls..it helps turning it off in my house because I don't get great reception so its not always looking for that 3g
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Thanks. Is that only 1G? That's partially what I want. Better would be to be able to get 2G which would be ok for web browsing. 1x is painfully slow and useless. I'd like to be able to switch to 3x just for streaming video, downloading, or other high data needs.

Yes.
Hold power down.
I think ATT when you turn off 3g it goes to 2g.but if um not using 3g I keep it in 1x

If you still have sense, there is a widget from the settings that you can add to do this instead of having to hit the power button. Make it a 1 step process!
So it is not possible to shut off 3G and keep 2G?
analog = 1Gen network
1X = 2Gen network
EVDO = 3Gen network
EDGE is GSM 2G, does not apply to this discussion.

No.
An easy way to see what you can and can't do is to install the HTC Widgets (found under "Widgets", then "Settings").
The one's relevant to the topic are:
Mobile Network and Wi-Fi.
I also use Bluetooth and GPS widgets, and between the four, manage battery consumption as best I can depending upon what I'm doing and whether or not I have wi-fi coverage available. If I'm just doing calls and SMS text messaging, I turn them all off.
OK. Thanks all

Incredible. The OP is looking for wireless data (see his post #5) when 3G is off. If you can do that, post a how-to. When I disable 3G and wi-fi, I get 1x - which is 2G, as explained - but isn't what the OP is trying to ask for (but getting terminology mixed up).
Source: Here. Point #7.
7) Turn off always on mobile data
On HTC phones, the method for turning this off is menu, settings, wireless & networks, mobile networks, disable always on mobile data. This process may be slightly different for your phone, and the name of the setting may be slightly different as well. But what this does is prevent your phone’s data from ALWAYS being on. Often times this will disable data after your phone’s screen has been off for about 5 minutes. This won’t affect your email, weather, or other apps that require syncing; your data is turned on to sync those during their regular schedule.

Is there such option available in Arc?
Unfortunately, no. But there is an app called Green Power. You can set the intervalls according to your preferences and much more!

Just turn off mobile data i.e. uncheck it. And then you won't connect over 2G/3G.

I think you didn't read my original post clearly.
I have a problem that when i turn off my screen, my data will auto connect. i turn off again and it turn back on again. how to solve this problem?
My Arc S came with a widget called 'Data traffic' that lets you toggle data on/off easily.
I live in area that does not have 4 g so it stays off, however today at airport I tried and no 4G toggle anywhere! Where did it go, I swore when I got s3 I tested 4G but now it's gone? Thanks for help.

GS3 doent have a 4g "toggle" as you say...but you can make sure its enabled
settings-->more settings-->Mobile Network-->Network mode.
Preferred network mode should be set to "CDMA/LTE/EVDO"
If you have "CDMA/LTE/EVDO" enabled, anytime your in a Sprint LTE area your phone icon will switch from 3g to 4g.

it shouldnt chew up ure bttery at all, as all it does is search the network for 4gLTE and if it doesnt find it, it will automaticly go to sleep and try again like 2 or 3 hours later or periodically as it tells u. .however u do need to have sprint automatic connention left on in order for that work. atleast thats what i got from reading the sprint connection optimizer information it gave me.

The optimizer isn't for the LTE. I hate that garbage so I always leave it off. As long as your preferred network is set as stated above, it will automatically switch between them. Side note though, it may switch back to 3g if you don't have a very strong 4 g signal. It likes to be weird.

Sounds like your thinking of a wimax phone. I I had a Motorola Photon and you had to physically turn 4g on and off on it.... I think most wimax 4g phones are that way.

Do any of the custom ROMS have a toggle for 4g/3g? I live in a 4g area but sometimes the signal isn't strong enough so it goes to 3g. Quite annoying. It would be great to toggle 3g off and force 4g.
So I had s2 before s3, so I assume the s2 was a 4 -g wimax? It had a toggle widget.

Have you tried updating to the new radio? I believe they boosted the power to give slightly better LTE connectivity in those kinds of environments.
There is a way to force LTE on the GS3. I did it with mine so that I could map out the LTE zones with sensorly a bit easier while I was driving over the weekend. The way I was able to do this is you need to have Nova Launcher downloaded and installed.
Once you do this, long press on the home screen and go to "Shortcuts".
Next click on "Activities"
Next scroll down to "IOTHiddenMenu"
Then scroll down and click on "IOTHiddenMenu : HDR1X_Selection"
Doing this will allow you to force LTE only mode. Keep in mind you WILL NOT be able to make any phone calls while doing this. For some reason the GS3 requires the phone to be in LTE + CDMA + EVDO Mode to make calls even if you have a very strong LTE signal.
Another app I would recommend downloading is called OpenSignalMaps. Once you have the LTE only mode turned on or even the normal LTE + CDMA mode, you can use this app to refresh your network by clicking the little refresh button at the bottom left of the app in the Overview tab. What this does is pretty much turn your phones mobile networks on and off and then scan for LTE first before scanning for EVDO. I have been able to connect to many more LTE sites by doing this. Even ones that are fairly far away.
Hope this all helps. Let me know if you have any extra questions.
No data connection at all
I have the settings on GSM/HSPA/LTE, but lost data connection completely. Tried to restart and turned on/off flight mode - still no data. Voice in and out is OK. I finally managed to reconnect by repeating the process. Is there a better way to reconnect?
Thanks.

with the latest l13 radio my phone will not stay on 4g it is heavily biased to 3g and I do not know how to fix it. I am right next to the 4g towers.. ... any thoughts? Thanks
Thanks
Thanks. Unfortunately, the "Network" app would not run. So I followed a similar line, and found "3G Reconnect". It does not fix the connection issue. Any other thoughts?

Turn on airplane mode? I believe wifi is the only thing that can be turned on in airplane mode.

Try turning off the mobile network. Settings>Wireless & Networks, uncheck Mobile Network. Than go to Mobile Network Settings and at the bottom uncheck Enable always-on mobile data. Only thing I can think of! Hope it works for you!

From terminal type:
su
radiooptions
This will display the list of options for the radio (if I remember correctly 1 disables)
Make your selection and exit terminal
The only thing is it doesn't stick on a reboot. You'll have to do this each time you boot. I do have a script that you can use that does it for you and you can set it to run on boot to turn the radio off on boot. I'll post a link soon if you want to look at it.
Edit: Here's a link to the original thread. Download link is still good. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16615634
