At first I want to apologize if someone already asked this question but I haven't found any Thread with this problem.
I have been using Miui now and then and never really had problems with my headphones. At least no problems I could not resolve with "Headset Blocker".
But for the last 3 weeks or so every Miui rom I try (wheter original or optimized by the cookers here on XDA) has this headphone Problem.
It feels as if the DHD recognizes the Headphones as Headset and jumps through the music. This happens sometimes on Cm7 or Sense-roms too but could always be solved with "Headset Blocker".
It's just jumping through the tracks but no calling any numbers or something.
Anybody with the same Problem or a Solution ?
Tom
Headphones are incompatable. A set without a mic has 3 connections on the plug. The larger band grounds out 2 connections on the phone and causes this. You need headphones with 4 connections. This is not an mp3 player. It is a phone. So in fact you do need a headset and not just headphones.
Thanks for the answer.
I think the Dhd is not just a phone but a multimedia-tool and as this it should work with normal headphones too.
Sense-, cm7 and previous miui Roms did also work with them so why did they suddenly decide to only support headsets ?
I played a bit with the phone and the music seems to work if it's lying on the back and not moving or held in front of you. But its skipping tracks if i turn it clock- or counterclockwise or rotate it back or forth.
Any idea why?
It is because your headphone jack with the longer contact is bridging together 2 contacts. When the phone is bumped or moved, it moves the jack just enough and the connection bounces (a quick on and off and so on) so the phone thinks you are pressing the button like on the original headphones. Look at the pics and you will see what I mean.

Picture of incorrect connector
Now you see what I mean about the longer contact that will bridge 2 connections together. This is not a good thing. Shorting together 2 pins that are not supposed to be connected is NEVER a good thing. If you want to use your current headphones then I suggest picking up something like this.
It also depends on the music app you are using. A different music app that does not have remote control (pause, skip tracks) may not have these issues.
Of you knew anything about Electrics you would know that by grounding something you aren't "shorting "it and its a phone problem not a headset problem, I have noticed this aswell so you are not the only one

Thank you Agoattamer. I think I can follow you and it seems reasonable.
But do you know why this don't happen at Sense or cm7 Roms but at the Miui ones? This is the point I don't get. If the Headphones were the reason shouldn't it happen everywhere?

Maybe you need to learn something about electronics before you open your mouth and contradict someone who does. Above I did say "grounding" and should have said "shorting". Better choice of words. But in fact that is what you are doing as that one connector is a ground so you are grounding the mic connector. It is NOT a phone problem, it is an incompatable headphone issue. And it is "electronics" and not "electrics". I have a degree in electronics. Do you? So shows much of your intelligence.
So you would say shorting? No its grounding the connection, and no that wouldn't make it skip track as the Mic would just be registered as not there, unless something has changed in recent year's that means a ground connection is active
Ignore me I just realised I'm a tway and appologise I forgot it had buttons on a headset

It does happen with sense ROMS FYI. It depends on the music app you are using. If the app has remote control using the stock HTC headphones like the stock HTC app it will do it. Most people notice it that when they first plug the earbuds in the music app will start automatically. Some music apps do not have remote control and you will not notice it. Also as your jack on the phone loosens up it will allow the 3.5 plug to move a little more causing this bounce.

Dude why don't you listen for once instead of speaking of something you know nothing about. It has always been this way. It is the mic control that causes the skipping of tracks. It is designed that way. When the mic goes to ground it causes the track to advance to the next song in some music apps. In other music apps it causes the music to pause and unpause or even activate the music app. And some apps that do not have remote control it has no effect. Even the iphone uses the same type of headphones.
Edit: I see your response and now know you understand. Not sure what a tway is but that is good enough for me. lol. Still good info for others to understand what is happening.

Smartphones are designed so when the Mic/control pin and ground pin are shorted, it knows that a headphone has been connected and not a headset. Fudge with the headphone not plugged in all the way and on cm7 you'll see the icon go from headphones to a headset. Those pins are MENT to be connected when headphones are plugged in as part of the phones detection system. That's why I can talk on my phone using the phones mic when headphones are in. If my phone always assumed headsets were in then the phone would automatically turn off the onboard mic expecting the headphones to have one. I may not have the same phone but I use my Evo every single night as an mp3 player and it doesn't cause problems unless my headphone comes out of the Jack. It occasionally will skip a track if it bumps it funny when its part way out.
Tl;Dr the mic pin is designed as a detection pin as well so the phone knows if it has standard headphones or a headset plugged in and having normal headphones plugged in won't mess anything up. Phones are designed with users using standard headphones in mind

Very correct. But a looser jack will cause the bouncing which causes the OP's issue. If the jack was nice and tight and you were careful to not move it much then you would experience no ill effects. Did not know about the detecting part. Thanks for the added info. We all learn something every day.
Thx guys that was really interesting.
I will try different music apps and hopefully the miui app doesn't interfere with them
Or is there a way to block the remote control of the standart music app? Then it should work too or am I wrong?
Anything is possible. You may have to decompile the app and look there. Or it could be elsewhere. Would be much easier getting an adapter or another set of earbuds with the correct connector.
There is a option to disable headset buttons and response, I can't remember where on miui, I use poweramp and there is a option in there to disable all headset functions

Others have probably figured this one out, but from my searches I found no other posts.
I am somewhat of an audiophile, and i wished to use the in-ear headphones which came with my Sony Ericsson Walkman W810i (old phone) to listen to music on my universal. unfortunately, these earphones have a 15cm cord, which won't even reach into my front pocket. To fix this issue, I decided to get a handsfree adaptor (why pay ~$5 for a plain old extension cord?). Mine cost ~4.50 AUD on ebay from hong kong, and was originally designed for an iPhone. Many people have assumed that these (plain 1 button + mic + headphones/headphone socket) iPhone headsets will work with the Universal. this is not the case. After pluggin this in with my wonderful sony heaphones I noticed taht the sound was tinny and sounded very washed out. I realised that this was because the ground pin and microphone pin on the universal are in opposite locations to those on the iPhone. The ground wire (feeding the power back from the headphones to the Universal) was going through the microphone first, and it's semi-conducting nature was screwing up the sound. Holding in the button (completely analog, just provides a fully conductive bridge on the mic channel) fixed the problem. So to fix this whole issue, I opened up the case of the headset adaptor (where the mic is) and swapped the wire from the headphone socket ground to the other side of the switch (which connects to the other wire (iPhone mic/Universal ground)) with my soldering iron. It took me only about 5 seconds of soldering and it was done. After snapping the case shut again, the headphones now provide excelent quality for my hardstyle beats.
I do have a question still though. On the iPhone (and Universal) the mic pin is grounded to provide a button click. This pauses and plays the music and answers phone calls on the iPhone, and a double click skips to the next song. Does this button answer phone calls on the Universal (I don't have a Universal headset and never have. I think it has a button, but correct me if I'm wrong). Is there any software/driver I can install to let this button pause/play and/or skip tracks in media player/pocket player? This would be very usefull software, and should be easy enough to write if anybody has the skill/desire to make this software (since the microphone is accessible to software, isn't it?). The signal should change from the mic having lots of resistance to having effectively none (showing a constantly high signal for microphone (not wave)). Maybe it could just be programed to run as a hardware button so that other software (such as voice command) can use it.
I'm unsure if this software exists already but I havn't found anything in searches.
Thanks for any help you can give regarding this software, and also happy modding to anybody looking to convert an iPhone headset, I hope this info helps.
#Edit#
If the phone uses the headset button as the "green button" then maybe this software is still possible. Call Of Duty 2 for pocket pc uses the green and red buttons as game controlls, which doesn't change to the phone applications.

HI the software exist but it didn't work that good for me well search in devs and hack section and you'll find it and it can only function with some other 3rd party music player not WM player..
and yes uni did come with wired headset with button in it just to answer the call nothing more and it might be because uni is old and had wm5 as original rom....
Cheers
Rajiv
ah that's what the button was for. I never could figure it out, it didn't seem to do anything!
on another note, I got a nice BT headset. Seems a bit agressive, but you could buy a cheap headset that has AVRCP (Audio/Video Remote Control Profile) and rip off the earbuds to be left with the remote control.. (then again I'm unsure if you're wired headphones would fight with A2DP on the BT headphones, and you may need a way around disabling that)
(or for less agressive, look up AVRCP on dev and hacking and see if anyone has another suggestion).

hey jonny can you map a program in any key in your motos9 ????
I use my bluetooth headset and a long press gets me Voice Command, the only difficulty is working it with Pocket Player. I got it setup to work with Voice Command instead of Media Player which I don't use at all, but it only works for starting the music and getting your media selection (album/artist/genre or anything), but once you have your music playing there is no way to make another selection or advance to next or revert to previous. Still... not a bad going, I say.

I haven't really tried... mostly because it does exactly what I want
I have hands-free-phone controls on one side (volume +/- and pick-up call/make call button, can be used with hands-free dialing etc), and media-player controls on the other (next/prev song, play/pause button) (nb, yes, other volume +/- control also controls music volume).
I don't see why not extra mapping if you really wanted it. Perhaps make search on AVRCP.
Hope this helps.

However, if you don't want your music over bluetooth and prefer it playing over Uni's speakers, there is no problem using BT for commands, it's only becomes problematic when you send audio over BT. Starting programs and apps with Voice Command over BT works fine as well. Doesn't have to be A2DP either, a single mono BT headset works just as well.

Yep, you can definitely do all that. For me the primary purpose was to get the music going while my Uni is in my bag in the backseat, I just select 'Anything' and Voila!
Basically, a long press will get you a Voice Command prompt, no need to map anything specifically, and you say what it is that you want. I amuse my friends by asking my Uni all sorts of inane questions, like what time it is etc. The worst thing is when I don't have my BT on - the blasted thing reads all my txts and e-mails out loud. So people now send me all sorts of **** on purpose, just so that people around me look at me and my talking bag funny.

Handsfree Headset Pinout
I'm making a car cradle for my Uni that uses usb charge, and a 3.5 mm splitter to plug into the car stereo and an ext mic. I have no idea how this will sound with no extra noise correction (I have very loud speakers and a crappy freebe test mic), but I was trying to find the pinouts for the headset jack. the first post in this thread is as close as I could find, and after cross referenceing the iphone headset, the pinout for the Uni is left (tip), right (next ring up), mic(3rd ring up), gnd (closest to the wire coming out). really I'm doing this post so I can find it later; once I confirm this info as true, I'll add it to the wiki with a nice little picture.
I'm interested to buy a new car stereo, in the way to stream directly the music from mine Desire over bluetooth. Someone got some experience about it? I would look to buy an used car stereo from ebay for this... any clue?
I have a kenwood KDC-X8016BT
does almost all.
can use the headset buttons to change the music being streamed via BT on phone OR other wy around.
Handsfree

etc etc
the only thing I don’t like is.... when scrolling through the phonebook via the headset.... you can't use the first letter shortcuts .... you have to scroll them all from a to z. But you can set 10 numbers to the one push favorites button...

Really ? I use my Desire with Pioneer BT600 everyday for internet radio, spotify, calls. Never had a reboot at all everything fine with mine, on Leedroid 2.1a atm
So, normally a stereo with a Bluetooth connection "should be" compatible with the Desire?
I have the JVC KD-R901 and the bluetooth streaming works fine, as does hands free calling with the Desire.
Good to hear! someone got another experience with Desire + one car stereo with Bluetooth?
Another question, can two different bluetooth devices work together or there would be a conflict? for example using the Desire plus this remote for the radio:

I have a JVC KD-BT11 few years old now but very good and never had any problems. Works very well with the desire both for calls and music.
Connects within seconds of turning starting the car and also works with the steering wheel controls in the car to skip tracks on the phone etc.

bump, no one know?
I just bought a new car stereo with Bluetooth 1.1 and 2.0 with A2DP (Marquant MCR-1257) but I got problem to play the music from mine Desire, can someone help me?
I connected the two devices together, then the instructions said that I need to change the autoradio mode (there are Radio, Aux, and BT-Play mode) but only the first two are selectable.
What I have done wrong? how did you connected the Desire with your stereo?
After some settings I finally connected the music via Bluetooth...but...
DAMN SUONDS SO BAD
The music volume is lower then the AUX mode, and there's this costant background sound that ruins the sound so much
It's that normal that Bluetooth sounds so bad? Als digital sounds should not be better compared to the Aux?

That doesn't sound normal. I've had a similar sound problem with stereo headphones when it thinks the headphones are mono headset. Rebooting both devices and reconnecting helped.

Check the media volume on the phone is set to full whilst you are streaming over Bluetooth.

Resurrection of post
So for bringing back a relatively old post, but I am about to invest a considerable amount of money into my car stereo system, and am looking for the perfect head unit for the following:
Samsung Galaxy S I9000 to work with A2DP for streaming music and making calls (needs phonebook reading etc)
Ipad to work with Apple Connector direct to headunit (Mainly for audio, however Video playback would be awesome via the Apple Video Connector)
AUX input for other people's devices
DAB Radio
USB port for flash disk
Do you think all these requirements can be satisfied with one super mega ultra headunit?
Sorry for posting in this forum despite my lack of a Desire, however I couldn't find a similar topic in the I9000 forum!
Thoughts on a postcard perhaps?

Bucketchem,
I'm also considering buying a Kenwood KDC-8016BT to use with my Android phone. Can you confirm how the voice dialling works that you quote it can do? The manual on the Kenwood website implies that only the KDC-X7016/KDC-X7016L can perform voice dialling calls (perhaps because this unit uses the external Bluetooth box which may be higher spec’ed that the one built into the KDC-X8016BT? Anyway, it seems strange that the higher spec'ed unit overall couldn't do this. Can you please confirm voice dialling is indeed a feature of the KDC-X8016BT? If so, does it require pre recording of voice tags (as the Kenwood manual implies is required for the KDC-X7016/KDC-X7016L) or does it just activate the voice dialler built into the phone - thus the intelligence for the voice dialling is in the phone rather than the car stereo?
Thanks,
David.

Hi everyone!
I am quite sure my problem is not ROM related, because it happens on my HTC DHD and also on my HD2.
Following happens when i listen to music over my headspeakers ( it also happens with all different kind of headsets, even when i have the phone connected to my car over aux ), the phone suddenly starts to call the last called person and it skips the songs randomly.
When I unplug it from aux or headspeakers it ok, until I replug it again.
I know there are quite a few people out there that have had or still have this problem.
Does anybody has a solution to that problem?
I hope, somebody can help me out there.
I had a similar problem but had a little crackle as well. I found that it got progressively worse with time as well. Thought it was just my stock headphones so did tests with other types and same problem so I figured it must be the socket. I was gonna buy some Bluetooth headphones but found that a clean restart sorted the problem. Turn off fast boot and turn off, leave it thirty seconds or so and boot up. it seems like it was something up do with cleaning out the temp files with a clean boot sorted it. Hope your problem sorted itself out the same way, if not then i'm all out of ideas and you need someone with a better knowledge of the system
Failing that try checking if there's some fluff in the headphone socket that may be causing a short of sorts
Funnily enough I was using earphones a few days ago when watching YouTube and my music kept starting and flicking through songs on its own. (I was also using WiFi.) I'd never experienced it before. It was like the phone was controlled by some remote source. It even continued after rebooting the phone and not even starting the music myself. After pulling out the headphones and quitting YouTube/ switching off Wifi it stopped doing it. It could be a bug or maybe simply the Evil Google is taking over.. Does anyone actually know why the OS is called `Android'?
It is a bug caused by using incompatible headphones. Headphones without a mic. Plug has 3 bands instead of 4. Try this free app from the market as it gets great reviews and supposedly stops the issue. "Headset Blocker"
Or use a set of headphones with a mic and 4 bands on the plug.

Thanks for this information. I hope this headset blocker will do the job.
But if not what kind of aux cable would I have to buy, for plugging my phone into my car system?
Pick up something like this. It is an adapter cable that adds a mic to an ordinary pair of headphones. This stops the short between the ground and the mic connection which seems to be giving MANY people issues.

I don't know if it is the port loosening up and the plug has static bounces between the ground and the mic connection or if it is just buggy software but this will fix it. Most electronic and cellphone stores should sell something like this.
to be honest i doubt if what you say is true because i´ve had the same problems with the stock headphones and same problems using my wifes sensation headphones( i know they´re both the same) so considering both have a microphone and are banded the same as your pic you posted that kinda makes the idea of it being incompatible kinda redundant. i´m not saying that your lying or anything but as a technical explanation of why there is a problem it leaves a lot to be desired from where i´m standing unless i´m the exception that proves the rule.
like i said for me just a cold restart did the trick and i´ve found people on forums elsewhere who solved the problem the exact same way.
A reboot doesn't fix the issue. Just stops it for now. Using the aux cable has stopped this issue for many. So has the app that I suggested. The only people that I knew that had this issue was using headphones without a mic and this has worked. And it could be a bug in the software. Music apps stay running in the background. So if you have different music apps installed this may cause your issue too. They may be interfering with each other. It is just suggestions to try. It all could be redunant. Rebooting is redundant as the issue will come back anyways.
that may be so but turning the phone on and off again costs a bit less and doesnt require a second cable to be connected between the phone and headphones
and again htc original headphones were the ones with the problem so i still dont see the type of headphones being the problem. seeing as how a complete reboot fixed the problem (maybe only temporarily, only time will tell) what that leads me to think is that its nothing more than a software conflict somewhere as the reboot cleans out the temp files somehow stopping the problem.
Been having this problem for months when connected via a normal 3.5mm jack in my car. It will call the last person, skip tracks and then open audiogalaxy. Thought it was the phone overheating or something to do with the socket. It all makes sense now, will try this app and report back after my next long drive if it works...
I've had a similar problem. To solve it, I did a small hardware hack to the 3.5mm socket of the phone.
I used some sugru silicone (sugru.com) to carefully cover up the first contact of the socket and it solved all my issues. It blocks out the headset commands (no more random calls during music playback) and also eliminated the static noise.
The hack is very easy to do and the sugru stuff can be removed again, so there's a minimum of risk involved.
Hope this helps
Ok so far. I downloaded this "Headset blocker" app from market and I have the feeling that it does its job.
Try it out yourselves and tell us your opinion.

headset blocker solved the problem for me, but just for a time...
since a month or sth, same problem again....
tried new clean boot of the phone reinstall of the app several times seems not to work anymore
When I rotate/disturb the headphone jack even slightly, the music player pauses. I'm guessing this is a hardware issue (I've tried with multiple headphones and the problem remains).
Is there an app to fix this? Is there a way to set the stock ICS player to not pause when the headphone gets disconnected and will this actually help? Is there a 3rd pary music player that can do this? Is there an alternate do-it-yourself hardware fix I can try? I really don't want to go through the hassle of giving it for warranty, since it would involve shipping to the UK but I desperately need a solution :/
Thanks

You might have a hardware defect with your headphone jack, but I just did a test.
If you have headphones in, and unplug them, it will pause the music. The same goes for bluetooth. Last night I was playing music over bluetooth to my cars sterio, and normally I would hit pause on the stereo before exiting the car, so my phone doesn't keep playing. But I had forgot to do that, and my phone didn't keep playing.
I think this is either a function of ICS or the Galaxy Nexus, as my previous phones would just keep playing when disconnecting from bluetooth.

Poweramp has an option for what happens when disconnecting. I think by default music pauses for all.

Thanks, will try the PowerAMP trial version, if it works out will spring for it. By the by, is there any decent free music player that can do this?
Almost every Android phone I've owned would automatically pause when removing the head phone jack. I listen in my car and just unplug it when I'm done.
Also I had some weirdness with headphone jacks before. For one they are open all the time and normally on top so lent just falls down in there. Fortunately the nexus is at the bottom so hopefully gravity helps this. Sometimes the jack you use doesn't make good contact. Supposedly you used different ones so I'd say that is eliminated. Probably just a bent pin or something. I wouldn't risk attempting to do this yourself.
I had one where it would think it was in headset mode all the time and would route all audio to it thus I would miss everything. I ended up doing a warranty exchange.
Hi All
I am getting a 2013 N7 that will be mounted permanently into my car.
I'm looking for app suggestions etc to get the best experience possible out of it in this function.
I will be using it mainly for Music/Emails/Navigation and maybe the odd video etc.
- What Car App's would you all recommend? I have started trying this one IG88 Car Dock Home (sorry I can't post a link, its on google play though)
Which looks good so far (testing out on my S3), I can manage to get it looking nice with a button for navigation and a widget for my gmail. The main thing I'm looking for to make this Car app better is a large music player widget? I currently use Mixzing, but the play/forward buttons are too small on the widget for this Car app.... Does anyone know of any music players that have a massive button widget? All I really need to see is play/pause, skip and the band and song name on the widget. Nothing else really?
- I will be getting a microphone installed (hopefully in the steering wheel). So is there any decent voice control apps? For this I imagine I would love to control music, and navigation. And maybe dictate emails perhaps by voice?
- I plan to make a wifi hotspot on my phone when ever I get into the car (so the tablet can use my mobile internet for navigation/emails). Is there a way also to take my calls from my phone through the tablet (and thus through the car speakers and microphone?
- I am planning to look into Tasker to set all this up to run smoothly. Like when the car gives the tablet power, to bring it out of sleep mode, turn things on and start the car app etc. Is there a way to do this on my phone (currently S3), so that when I get in the car, my phone automatically starts a wifi hotspot?
- Would there happen to be an andriod accessory that could send play/pause/skip commands to the tablet? Like a remote control I guess. As I could gut this and mount it into the steering wheel?
Lots of questions I know, there will probably be more to. The main one is the music widget to be honest, that car app looks pretty good as long as I can get the music control widget buttons big enough for ease of use in a car. (I'd almost be willing to pay someone to develop a little music control widget if its not that hard)
Thanks in advance for all your help.

Thanks for ths suggestion. Ill check it out, though it doesn't look to be what I'm after as I dont need a speedo etc.
Have you tried Car Home Ultra? Awhile back I was following mp3car.com and he was using that on his head unit, I've used it before but you'd have to try it yourself to see if you like it.
As far as getting your phone to start tethering automatically; if your car always stayed at the same location it'd be easy, but the only thing I can think of is using an NFC tag to swipe your phone by, or lay on, when you get into your car. And use Tasker from there. There's got to be something better though with two devices knowing they're in close proximity in some instances, I don't know.
For the wireless audio controls... Sixaxis would work, but you'd have a ps3 controller floating around your ride. And your bluetooth would be tied up.
Edit : Here is a good read.

heres my nexus 7 car install
GMD Gesture Control
Tablet Talk
Zooper Widget Pro
Media Utilities
Tasker
Secure Settings
Car Mode Control
Car Home Speedometer
ADWLauncher EX
No Lock
that about sums up my app list for car use
---------- Post added 28th November 2013 at 12:30 AM ---------- Previous post was 27th November 2013 at 11:56 PM ----------
follow up to my post
use zooper and media utilities to make a large widget for music metadata and cover art
use gmd gesture control to make gestures for play/pause next and previous shortcuts from media utilities
gmd gesture control will also have gestures to pop up 5 different docks that you can put whatever apps you want on, they hide as soon as you select something \
best thing about gesture control is that you can do the gesture anywhere on the screen from any app on the screen so you can play/pause skip or back track while maps is on the screen or any other app, so rather than looking for a music widget with bigger buttons just use gesture its far superior
Car Home Ultra is a great dock app for a standard dock but I find creating your environment yourself far more rewarding and more informative, standard docks rely on making big easy buttons I like having no buttons and being able to use everything i traditionally use a home screen for on any screen I am looking at whether its maps gmail pandora play music or even the play store I can launch my docks with that app open
going to make another video of my dock using gesture control and will link it here as well
I've gone the way of a full fledged car pc a few years back...

I've come out of it a fabricator, but realized what features are important in a car entertainment system and what are... fluffy.
1. Find a way to control as the driver. No one will use this system more than you.... while you drive. I had grand ideas of air mouses and fancy keyboards, but IMO nothing can replace a few well though out buttons as near to you as possible. If your car has built in steering wheel controls, but this!
http://www.rcjoycon.com/base_3/menu_10.php?com_board_basic=read_form&menu=10&com_board_idx=14
even if it doesn't buy a few resistive switch buttons and this board will still work. You can map the keys to do whatever you want them to do on your tablet.
2. audio quality.
If you're rocking stock audio basic system, bluetooth would suffice. but if you've put any money into your system then bluetooth is just such a sacrafice in fidelity. Some people are using digital to analog converters. I've always been able to get excellent quality from the 3.5mm.
3. OTG cable.
currently there is very limited support of this feature of the gen 2 nexus 7. Elemental kernal provides support, but especially with the new release of 4.4 it's working through buts. But i feel relieable otg/charging y cable is essential this provides:
a. slot for removable storage
b. periferasl (mouse, keyboard, joycon)
c. reverse camera
d. charging
4. Apps
-n7 player
-audio glow wallpaper (SOO slick)
-google experience launcher (GEL), incorperates translucent nav and status bars which adds a lot of vertical screen, excellent voice command integration (good for driving).
-nexus media importer
-Torque (need correspondingblue tooth module)
...still working on this list myself
5. Freedompop (should be number 1, can't believe i forgot this)
I bought a wireless hot spot device from them for 40$. It was a sale, it includes 1 month of free 2gb internet. BUt this is they key... after the first month you can continue to use 2gb of data for 20$ montly, or downgrade to 500mb... FOR FREEE.
Will you be streaming videos, no of course not, but this would allow ample bandwidth for the important activities in a car, namely: navigation google maps, plenty of data to browse with, and even moderate music streaming.
I did the whole create hot spot with phone thing for a bit and phone gets hot, drains battery like nuts, and i never figured out a way to automate it.
It is SOOO nice to just have one dedicated device that sits in the car and provides free internet for not just me but guests.
Wow thanks guys for the responses, seems I have a lot to work through.
I think I'll tackle one question at a time.
So it seems that I need to set up this OTG cable thing.
My questions is, I need to have the power permanently attached to the microUSB port of the Nexus (otherwise it will go flat haha). From google a OTG Y Cable is what I need as it can charge and give usb data at the same time?
I have searched and searched around NZ sites (I live in NZ) and I can't seem to find one, I can find plently of OTG cables, but not one with a USB for power and USB for devices.
So after more googling it looks like I could go down the OTG cable to Powered USB hub path? With a powered USB hub would I be able to plug the power supply into one USB port, and then a remote/memory stick etc into the others? Would this provide charging and use at the same time?
In regards to powered USB hubs, do you guys know of any well known products that I can use in a car environment? (voltage and all that)?
Thats it for now, its all quite complicated and confusing to me so I'll just ask one topic at a time
Thanks in advance
I understand what you are doing but couldn't you use a unlocked n7 (im sure you got your n7 already). And with kitkat and google always on would you have a need for a lot of the add ons. I,was thinking of doing the same thing. So I will follow this thread for a while.

Well I'm certainly keen for some physical buttons on the steering wheel. I am installing it into a Mazda Atenza dash navi compartment thing replacing the not functional japanses navi screen. Its a bit of a reach from the drivers seat so basic media controls would be awesome in the steering wheel.
And to use that thing for steering wheels I would need a spare usb port (as well as charging).
I just ordered a Y cable OTG from Ebay (that ships to NZ woo) but that might take awhile so I am going to have the car installation guys install everything so I can access it through the glove box. So I can set this up later.
About the accessories to control music play/pause/fwd/red:
I know of two options:
1. Paired Pebble watch (unfortunately it only pairs with one device so you would have to manually pair it of you also wanted top use with your phone)
2. Paired Bluetooth audio control in the car (mine only pairs with one device) like this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B009NLTW60/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?qid=1385907362&sr=8-7&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70
I use 1. With my phone and 2. With my tablet and have a switch installed so I can control where the audio is generated from to my car speakers.

It is, but it has controls on it. Play/pause by a push on the device itself, fwd/rwd on the top edge. It controls Google play music without any kind of set up. Though you probably have to start it on the tablet first, I'm not sure if it can start the music app too like the pebble does. They both use Bluetooth to connect and control.

Ah ok didnt see the controls, so that 2nd one can connect to the tablet (which has all the music and music player on it) and can control the music? So there's no need to actually plug it into anything as the controls are all sent via bluetooth?
But I wont be able to pair it to my phone at the same time right?
This might be a good way to go as it doesn't require massive cable work.
Edit: Ah I see, no I dont think this will work... The Nexus 7 tablet sound out will be connected directly to the head unit under the dash (hard wired). What I need is something to bluetooth media controls to the tablet, and the tablet to send out sound to the head unit like normal. I think this thing takes the sound via bluetooth to the kit thing and then the kit thing plugs into the aux port on the head unit?
Would it be possible to just not plug in the kit thing? And have it just send media controls but not recieve sound?

The Nexus 7 is getting mounted into the dash professionally so I don't need a mount, I'm currently investigate ideas on how to get controls onto the steering wheel for the media part of the tablet.
You say "disable Media Option on your phone in bluetooth"
Would this mean that I could use the bluetooth handsfree kit suggested above as a controller only? With the sound still going out the tablets 3.5mm jack?
Scosche Universal Bluetooth Handsfree
a cheap bluetooth media controller, just make sure when its paired you unselect media from the bluetooth properties

My tablet is not permanently installed, but needs no wires. The Bluetooth kit connects to the car's aux in jack, and the N7 connects to the Bluetooth kit wirelessly via bluetooth. So you can have sound through the car speakers whether the tablet is docked, in your coat or purse or wherever. I also have a home made version of a qi charger dock, to avoid dealing with usb charging wires when I need the display. (It barely charges so i need to improve on that). I don't know how this would change for a permanent install. I do have a switch to control input to my aux in jack, because my phone dock audio is connected to that also. You may be able to rig up something but its beyond what I know.

I've heard that bluetooth audio is bad though.
I sent an email to Kinivo about that product, and they replied back saying they tested my scenario in their lab and it worked, so I might be going down that route after all.
