[Q] Sooo... Any update on ACS 1.3? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It's been a few months and 1.2 is STILL the best ROM in my opinion. Just... any new news on the development for 1.3?

John did mention a new kernel would be included with 1.3 but that it wouldn't be Vision Kernel as was expected a while back. Other than that, rjmjr69 (leader of ACS) hinted that 1.3 would be "coming soon" in the 1.2 thread not to long ago, so we shouldn't be waiting much longer. My GUESS (which should be taken with a grain if salt) would be that it's in its testing stages and being prepped for release, hopefully before Oct? We'll see what happens tho, someone on the inside is bound to tip us off with a teaser or something soon.

LOL ... yep , when rjmjr69 posted that , I got my phone ready , but still waiting ... LOL

Yeah, when they are trying to add a new kernel, new tweaks, Hotspot hack, etc it can get tricky. Especially the kernel part. You have to test so many configurations to confirm stability. For all I know, the kernel may not make it in. I will contact some people to try and get more details

It will be based on froyo, iirc, which would mean it'l be outdated at release. They may have considered that...

Thanks, Ceelos! That's what I needed to hear! In my opinion, I think ACS should just "strongly" suggest a good kernel for us to include instead of making one. But, I'm happy with 1.2 at the moment.
I tried the Hurricane ROM and the volume was waaay too loud. I reverted back to ACS 1.2 and I'm happy as a clam.

Usually teams seem to recommend a fellow team, member's or friend's kernel but the one that is the most current is Genocide 2.0 that has Voodoo 10. Maybe I will go through all of the kernels and test for battery life, speed, and whatever anyone asks

Since it is so easy to flash a kernel, and they dont normally change anything else in my setup, I tend to have as many as possible on my SD to cycle through until I find the one that works the best on my setup

ehhh , im done with froyo .. i dont feel like backtracking now.

Just hearing the part about you knowing 2 devs that are working on kernels is a breath of fresh air to me. I've been wondering when new kernels would start to roll out again. I was hoping for an update to Vision and Genocide kernels, especially after the efficiency keyboard patch was released by mkasick. Hope to see some updated, and possibly new, kernels.

I agree 100%. I have as much fun messing with a new kernel as I do a new ROM. Its more risky testing them because you can fry your phone but that's part of the fun! Lol

They should not include a custom kernel. One of the best thing in 1.2 was the stock kernel. Custom kernels sometimes make apps to FC. I had issues, random reboots, FCs with custom kernel. That why I choose 1.2 because it have a stock kernel, no issues since first install(well in my wife Epic it lost the root).

1.2 did not have a kernel it keeps whatever kernel you had before. Im sure it lost root on your wife's epic cause it was probably stock and root is usually baked in the kernel

Most stable gingerbread

I have spent the past week trying out several gingerbread ROMs trying to find one that I'd stable enough for daily use. The most impressive one I used was ASC Bamboozled v1.1. It was super quick and had some cool animations like the TV animation when you turned it off. I would like something kinda of like that. I know that the gingerbread ROMs have a reboot issue and that doesn't bother me too much. It is a slight annoyance but not a deal breaker. With the source of gingerbread from Samsung floating around I was wondering if there were any stable ROMs yet.

The animation is called CRT on and off I believe.

cm7 is the best. no reboots but it hasn't no 4g, which suxs.
I thought about cm7 but I heard there is a issue with voice calls and some of the standard things didn't work. Has that changed with the source? Nit worried about 4g seeing I don't live in a spot that has it. Yep throwing away $10 a month. I hate it.

Until the EXT4 kernel is released from source, find yourself a good stock RFS prerooted EH17 ROM to Odin and then Odin in mkasick's kernel from the new source. I don't think anyone put together a new ROM with the new kernel yet besides CM7. Or wait a few more days and I am sure there will be some.

Of all the GB roms, Thunderhawk has been the most stable for me.
Hands down acs ics. Its super stable and fast and its ics themed. cyanogen is also great if you don't mind losing 4g and video. Although battery on both roms are fantastic. I get about 18 hours average on acs and about 23 on cyanogen. And thats with a stock battery with moderate use. Ive been switching back and forth for a while now. But been running acs as my default rom. I havent had one problem with it at all. No reboots, lags, gps lock issues, or things of that sort.

Here's the thing about 'stability'. All the GB roms look wonderful out of the gate and perform flawlessly for 3-4 days and then start to disintegrate, act out, cause FCs and freezes. If you want serious stability, you need to use a Froyo rom. If you don't mind a few inconveniences, CM7 is the way to go. It is the most stable of the GB roms and many phone owners are very excited about its possiblities down the road. Honestly, I work in a hi-rise in San Francisco and I don't even miss the 4G, the phone is that fast. The battery life alone is worth the call sound and video issues which are minor at best. IMHO.
everyones phone is different
some people have issues with cm7 and acs ics, and some people dont. so best idea is test drive both roms, to see have your phone acts it them. and with the video issue there are other players in the both markets that can help with that. and with cm7 its just plug and play no extra steps to get it to work and with acs ics there other things you have to do to get it to rite.
ACS ICS seems to be pretty good so far. No major concerns to this point, albeit early stages of testing.

Don't you know not to invest in something for features it may have one day... that's what got us into trouble with the Epic 4G in the first place (6 month late Froyo, endlessly delayed Gingerbread, TV Out, FM radio...)!
Anyways, whenever someone asks "what's the best rom?", you'll always get very biased responses. You'll generally hear cries of "ACS!" and "Cyanogen!". While the acclaim is generally deserved, my own testing hasn't yet shown anything too fantastic in their current GB versions. ACS ICS has a somewhat glitchy launcher, but if you like it have at it. CM7 did not have anything special I could find, nor did it perform to my typical battery standards.
Try them all out, each has their own merits and each phone performs differently with different roms. Don't forget the others like Hurricane or Urban.
Or you can just follow the crowd .
When I came to XDA, I read the threads under each ROM to see what the features were and what problems people were having. People coming here now are too damn lazy to do this and want us to tell them exactly what to put on their phone. I would lke nobody to answer threads on "what's the best ROM" and maybe people will stop being lazy and read.
If everyone liked the same thing there would be only 1 rom. Read like kenny and random suggested. Find the one with the most features that you personally need or want. I try just about every rom on here and always find my way back to thunderhawk. It just has the best mix of all the features I need working.

POLL: What is your favorite rom thus far

Just wondering what everyone else likes for a rom. Feel free to tell us your likes or dislikes with your current rom. With the choices we have available to us on this device, I'm sure some are wondering which rom is right for them.... this poll should give people some kind of direction.
EDIT: I must apologize. I must of been tired to miss putting viperROM on the poll list. Don't suppose there is a way to edit that poll is there?
I'm loving Starburst and glad I finally budged out of my curmudgeonly ways off of stock as I wait for CM. It's very full featured and allows tweaking without turning into a theme-fest. I was very surprised with it.
Though I am also preparing my phone to try out some other ROMs today....I'm a big fan of Calkulins work so I'm pretty eager to try that out.
Calkulin FTW
Although to be fair I haven't tried starburst yet. Didnt boot when I tried it but it was my first attempt at a custom ROM on this phone so I am sure I did something wrong

To be honest, and maybe this means I'm a ****, but when I read about people having all kinds of problems with a rom or a kernel or a mod or anything my first thought is automatically "they probably fncked something up."
A vast majority of the times this is, in fact, the problem. I'm on my 8th? 9th? Android device. I hack 'em up to pieces. I try to be a good boy and read everything thoroughly...but I don't. I skim for the important bits. If I screw something up it's usually pretty obvious, then I fix it, then it works. I have never actually had a ROM that has destroyed my battery life (I have with experimental kernels, but, to be expected), I have never lost 3G function, I have never gotten unfixable bootloops, I have never killed my wifi or 4G to where a full wipe and reflash didn't bring it back...never. For years now I have been hearing some wild problems from people and never actually experienced any of them for myself in a way that wasn't fixable, by myself.
I have gotten better battery life, faster internet, working youtube, faster wifi (the 'wifi n' mod on Evo4G), etc etc etc.
I don't know, I'm always skeptical of people claiming a rom or kernel are screwing things up when there are other people with no problems at all.
Alpha and Beta roms notwithstanding, lol
viper for some reason not on here..
but anyway, my vote is for viper. Need to try Calkulin more though
yeah.. where's viper? I think the rom is quiet good.. and nobody 's seems to complain much on his thread..

I really like Calkulin's ROM. It's close to stock, which to me is an advantage, but includes some sensible additions. The latest version is based on the most recent leaked update and includes a modified kernal with a ClockWorkMod-based recovery.
I'd recommend new users check out qbking77's videos in this thread. They were a great help to me when getting started.

The "AOS bug" is not ROM related. Read the forums here for an answer to what it is and how to "fix" it.
As far as the "best" ROM it's all subjective but I would go for Calk's 2.0. The man knows what he is doing.
I have always used stock kernel and stock rooted ROM for this phone. This had been the best user experience I have had in an Android. I am so happy with battery life I don't want to change.

I had trouble with the earlier update scripts on Sleeper. It seems 2.04 has gotten all the bugs out. You can't beat CleanGB for convering to MTD and Toad seems to be on top of his game. I have not tried them on BML but I am sure they are comparable. The advantage that Sleeper offers is 2 versions, slim and full. Both seem very fast at stock frequencies. Since I restore advanced data from nandroid my setups always look the same and can compare performance. Sorry if this wasn't much help.

It's not for everyone. It is non-Touchwiz. That is probably the most important thing to remember so things will be different. I made a thread in General on both CM7 and CM9 where people can post tips and tricks to ease the experience of jumping over. I ran CM7 for awhile up to nightly 28. It is solid. CM9 as stated is in Alpha 3 now. It is pretty good for a taste of ICS but not for everyone.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
I think the OP is looking for a production build, so a nightly build version would not be ideal. CleanGB would be my recommendation. Just less overhead and room for errors.
side by side comp
Interesting thing, obvious too for most...
Each of the Devs use each other stuff(s) and they give credit for the mods each have used in the final rom...
As a side by side, I can see pros and cons of the two, I have used both and seem to lean towards Sleeper...not sure exactly why. but I have nandrroids of both ready to go.
Just cant seem to want to try the CM builds, would love to see what the Viper Devs could come up with in EL30 though.
