need to know if i should purchase a screen protector.
is the touch screen made out of gorilla glass?
I still don't understand what the obsession is with gorilla glass.
I'm 99% positive it is...
...but sand can still scratch GorillaGlass

It's the brand-name for hardened glass that everybody knows about. Like all brands of tissue are "Kleenex" now.
Even though most products do indeed use Gorilla Glass brand hardened glass even if they didn't I doubt anything ships with the poorly thought out glass and plastic that PDA touch screens of yore had on them.
RIP iPaq and Casiopea
I'd just buy this screen protector (it's only $5).
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0057RMT3C
But looking at the gorilla glass website, I noticed that the overseas GSII is on the list, but not the US varients (which I'd assume does have gorilla glass.)
http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/products-with-gorilla/samsung
Oops, screen protector is only $5.
I wouldn't bother with a screen protector. They just make the display look muddier, reduce sensitivity, and the glass used (which I'm pretty confident is Gorilla Glass) can stand up to essentially everything that the screen protector would protect against.
Waste of a beatuiful screen getting a protector. Gorilla Glass holds up to anything a protector would like the last post says.
Sprint's Epic 4G Touch guide was leaked a couple weeks back and it said it's got Gorilla Glass.
Save money and enjoy your awesome screen the way it was intended! My original epic got dropped sooo many times on hard floors, cement, etc. Not a single scratch on it. Even accidently put my keys in the same pocket on accidnet a few times. Nothing!

I've seen my friend attempt to scratch the surface of his phone with his keys as hard as he can and still did not scratch. that being said I tend to have my keys in the same pocket thus wanting to prevent scratches.
As other poster stated, i rather not have a screen protector since it makes display, sensitivity, ect... crappier.
If it is indeed gorilla glass then no need for screen protector, if not i will buy one to protect the phone.
i'm not asking because i'm afraid of screen getting cracked, i know gorilla glass is just as easy for regular glass to crack. people have a misconception that gorillas glass does not crack. it's just scratch resistant and nothing else.

Have him try that with sand...sure, the screen protector is even less resistant to sand but at least it's a barrier.
...that said I always use screen protectors. I don't know what kind of screen protectors everyone is using that muddys or dulls the screen. There may be a nearly imperceptible level of sensitivity lost, but, my phones have always been as bright clear and sensitive as I could imagine I would ever need them to be, often more and I've never noticed a difference with the screen protector off.
Anyone not putting on a screen protector?
I have never used a screen protector. My screen is perfect and I've had it for almost a year!

I do love the screen on this phone without the screen protection but i am still putting one on. I tried using nothing with one of my epics and was extremely careful with it but still managed to get a nice big scratch right in the middle. I don't even know how it happened. I plan on having this phone for a while and want to keep it in good condition.

I have dropped my OG Epic, carried out in my pocket, never had a protector and the only thing that scratched was the frame.
Live the naked feel of my screen.

I completely agree, never had one for my Evo 4g and I had that since launch.

I bought the $15 pack of screen protectors today with the phone and the guy put it on for me.. it adds a slight haze to the screen which sucks and I think I may pull it off later and see if I notice the sensitivity being any better and if the screen looks that much greater to me.. normally I like my phone naked.. but my last phone.. the galaxy s 4g for tmobile.. within a week I had little light scratches on it..like my keys hit the screen in the middle in my pocket.. which always slightly bothered me.
Screw it, I'm naked loving every minute of it
I have used with and without. I notice that it is harder to play games that require constant touch WITHOUT a protector. I love the feeling of the bare glass as well but I also like to play games.
Specifically: Gun Bros Pocket Legends, Legends Arcana.. any that require lots of constant touch.
Also, you do Not want to chance getting a 2$ screen protector from someplace like Ebay... I would recommend something of a bit higher quality..
I used a protector from Monoprice on the wife's Thunderbolt and you cant tell its on there. That one Was cheap but I also trust Monoprice supplies.
Besides, why even CHANCE taking damage on your investment? We do so much with these things, why chance hurting our enjoyment of them.
I'm not...never used one on the og epic with gorilla glass...won't use one on this one....I will however keep it in a pocket by itself

I took off my t-mobile screen protector yesterday and to day discovered a deep scratch on the "gorilla glass"...
To be very clean. Im very very verrrryy careful with my electronics and never damaged any in anyway! But its how how people say you can stratch it with keys or pens or put it in a bad with bolts and screws and the glass wont be scratched.
It false advertisement because i had my vibrant in an empty pocket fresh dry cleaned too! no dust and anything inside to cut it.
I had many average phones where i only got a tiny scratch on the screen from the phone falling from my hand after 2yrs of use and landing on concrete...
its funny how this glass gets scratched up very deeply without being dropped or scrapped at! and its a scratch for sure because when i move my thumb on it pressed i can feel the sharp line of the scratch on my thumb
Maybe there is a big misunderstanding, maybe only euro galaxy S phones have the gorilla glass... because this sure doesnt!
So for those who want to go naked!!! DOOOOOONT! buy a screen protector!
man... although a simple glass wont scratch with nothing in your pocket..
Maybe someone touched it when you didnt know, or something happened.
I've been using my vibrant for about three weeks now and have no scratches, only some marks on the battery cover.
The samsung vibrant does indeed have gorilla glass. Just because it has gorilla glass doesn't mean its un -scratchable. It just means it's more resistant than regular glass...if you don't mind me asking...what did you have in your pockets? A machete? A light saber?!...I kid, I kid...the morale of this story is, get a screen protector, prevent your vibrant from getting scathed by a light saber!

I really dont care, i got it replaced and finally bought screen protector that i really like. (anti glare and anti fingerprint)

+1 not a scratch.
Real Gorilla Glass takes alot to scratch. The ZuneHD is known to have the Gorilla Glass. My ZuneHD has been naked since the day I brought it and today it is still scratch free. It is possible our Samsung Vibrant does not have the Gorilla Glass as part of carrier modification to cu cost. who knows.
that sucks man, i would be pissed too.
but what did it get scratched on? must have had something in your pocket with it...?

Interesting post...I'm actually a screen protector freak and have ordered multiple brands of screen protectors for the Vibrant (actually even Galaxy S just to try it...) so I'm all FOR screen protectors...best one so far is from Korea.
About your scratch...unless there's a scratch fairy, there is SOMETHING that caused that scratch. It may be foreign to you because you may not have known when it happened...It's highly possible someone else without your knowledge was the cause of it. Scratches just don't appear out of thin air...
Bottom line...the glass on the Samsung is solid...very solid...I've dropped my phone before so I know first hand how durable the glass is...it's some tough $#!t....

Its just the way of the world. If you put a screen protector on, soon after you take it off your will get scratched.
If you put it in a case, soon after you take it off you'll drop your phone. Call it karma, or just dumb luck, but it always seems to happen this way

just to say this... like many people who were surprised by vibrant getting scratched so easily... Im on of them too! Because in theory if it has gorilla glass its suppose to be a lot tougher than average glass! I understand its not un-scratchable but it deff got scratched very easily being that i had nothing in my pockets! and that whenever it did recieve that scratch it wasnt from something really bad because i would of noticed it... since the phone is around me all the time!
So if any kind souls who believe this is a gorilla screen please demonstrate it for us on a video.... Take a key and scratch it the glass around and we'll see then....
I don't use a sp, but my phone still looks brand new.. No sp, no case, usually keep my phone in my pocket when walking around. Screen is still smooth a glass. Could samsung have used different materials depending on when it was built, kind of like the problem with the shortage if amoled screens?

I would never personally do this, and a 3 dollar screen protector to protect the integrity of a very sweet piece of equipment, is a very small price to pay.
I just find it hard to believe that with only cloth surrounding it it got scratched. Not even lint in your pocket? I call BS
LOL
Trying to get ahead of the game. Isn't the Infuse the same screen size and layout as the Epic Touch? If so Seidioonline.com has some great screen protectors.

I'm not asking sarcastically, I'm generally curious: Why bother with screen protectors on these? They only cloud the view and the screens are so incredibly hard to scratch that I can't imagine what you'd have to do to them that a screen protector would manage to prevent. I know my Epic 4G didn't acquire a single sign of damage in its year, and that's pretty unsurprising given the Gorilla Glass that's used on it. Same should apply to the Touch.
I've got the same seidio protector on my epic. You can't even tell its there. Looks and feels exactly like the screen.
Sorry if I sound like a fanboy, but I've tried another companies invisishield?? and it totally sucked ass! Paid dearly for it too, like 30 bucks. It was nothing more than a piece of vinyl.

I've had my original epic without a screen protector since the first day it was released and it still doesn't have a scratch on it. The salesman at the sprint store even commented on how it looked brand new when he was trying to sell me a screen protector for my new Epic touch.
With gorilla glass it's really not needed, unless you just like spending money.
I ordered the Skinomi one too.. but you guys (and others) are making me doubt its necessity. I'm just paranoid that one day it will be scratched by some sand or keys that I forgot were in the pocket.
What if you drop it on sharp pavement/asphalt in such a way that it simply slides across it, would it still not scratch the gorilla glass?

Just search YouTube for Gorilla Glass and watch the absurd and painful things they do to it without effect. RAZOR BLADES across its screen, baggies full of screws, etc.
And in your scenario you'd be far more likely to shatter the screen than scratch it, and no protector will stop that.
I agree with the no need for a screen protector on Gorilla glass. I used to sell phones on craigslist all the time and did find that some people managed to scratch iPhone screens. I'm sorry, but if I pay that much money for electronics, then I am gonna take care of them. Then again I've seen people with ragged out Mercedes and Audi's also, so go figure.

iphones use "scratch resistant" glass also which is all gorilla glass claims to be. All it takes is one grain of sand in your pocket to get micro scratches or worse on gorilla glass.

Because they don't cloud the view at all if you use the clear ones and they actually do scratch quite easily by sand and other debris. Look no further then the plethora of scratched iPhone 4s with gorilla glass and you can see it's nowhere near scratch proof.
i made this for every1 asking about screen size of infuse v epic touch
The dimensions listed are sometimes misleading on those sites; I owned a Vibrant which was techincaly a different size than international SGS yet every single accessory fit like a glove. That is obviously not the case with this device, but the dimensions are pretty close.
I opened like 4 boxes of Infuse accessories at Best Buy this morning looking for something temporary to protect my device while better options appear and aside from a few minor things, all of the cases fit the ET4G well. The Infuse is more square than our device and the headphone jack and volume rockers are a tad off (though still usable). Only major incompatibility is that mic hole is in wrong place on all the Infuse cases. I ultimately did not end up buying anything, but I am almost positive that Infuse screen protectors would be the exact right size.
All it takes is one scratch to ruin your phone experience. That's my opinion.

3 pack. 1 antiglare and 2 normal.
Advice, unless you really need antiglare dont use it. Makes the screen look grainy. The normal ones are awesome though and maintain the glass feel and beauty of the screen.
14.99 for the 3 pack btw
my gf and I each got a pack of the sprint screen protectors. I put anti-glare on mine and regular on hers. the anti-glare sucks hard core, but the regular ones seems pretty good. im actually surprised how good the regular ones are. silky smooth, went on with 0 issues. no bubbles or specs. the anti-glare simply makes this beautiful screen look disgusting. oh...but it does cut down on glare for what its worth.
Just a word of warning: the first protector I applied had lint under it after application. I noticed the culprit was the cloth it came with that I used to clean the screen prior to putting it on.

Can't disagree with your confidence in so-called "Gorilla Glass" more!
It scratches. Unfortunately... easily. Had my EPIC in my pocket last spring playing golf and don't remember what was in my pocket but it wasn't anything made from titanium or diamonds and got a couple of pretty good scratches on it.... on my second one (after I replaced due to a brick) got a couple of minor scratches rather easily as well.
Don't get overly confident in the "gorilla" glass... I think there is something awesome about it in that it is highly polished and hard... but it IS NOT scratch proof.

My first Epic got scratched the first day I had from something in my pocket I will use a screen protector on the E4GT gorilla glass or not
I hate screen protectors. Who needs it with Gorilla Glass..
Like the above two posters, Gorilla Glass does scratch, and fairly easy at that. All it took to scratch my MoPho was one drop into the pocket my keys were it. As soon as I thought to myself, "Hey dumbass your keys are in that pocket", I pulled out the phone and low and behold there was a scratch. Not a big one, but it was the most annoying little scratch. So screen protectors are definitely a good thing, Gorilla Glass or not.
Gorilla Glass, we got it already!!! Enough already!!! I don't care if it has KING KONG GLASS, the extra layer of protection doesn't take anything away from the beauty of the screen, image or look of the phone. If you've tried a screen protector that does, then you probably either bought a crappy Zagg Invisible shield made of thick vinyl or had a cheaper than dirt one that did suck. The ones the OP is talking about are very nice. Just as nice as the one's Seidio makes, if not better. If you install it correctly, it is VERY difficult to see that the phone even has one on it.
Yes, we know, Gorilla Glass. Please stop! Why don't you make a thread about it instead?
OK, rant over...
I'm getting this horrible "rainbow" effect with the anti-glare protector in the sprint pack. Anyone else have this effect? I thought maybe because I applied it wet that it needs to dry underneath first. Possible?

I'm extremely careful with my devices, and the slightest damages can get me pissed off like nobody can imagine.
Today I used a pixel tester to see if I had any scratches on my screen, and sure enough, there was an extremely small scratch, that you can barely see, even with your eyes right up to the screen. I had a very hard time even keeping my eye on it. But still, just the idea of a scratch pissed me off so much.
Is this a sign of what's to come? I didn't think I would need a screen protector. I thought the reinforced glass would be just as good as Gorilla Glass, but I guess not, since none of my past Androids have had scratches on them before. None at all.
Should I spend $20 that I don't even have yet on a screen protector? I don't want the screen quality to go down, and I can't put screen protectors on on my own, so I usually pay BestBuy to put Zaggs on, which they mess up by trapping dirt under. I'm not going insane over the scratch, but I keep thinking about what could possibly happen next.
I have a TPU case on my phone's exterior, and I keep the phone in a silk pouch when it's in my pocket (that pocket is dedicated to the phone only, by the way).

So you're extremely anal about scratches, but you don't use a screen protector? It doesn't matter what the screen is made of, its not invincible. Things happen.
And not sure why you "can't put screen protectors on". Apparently you're unhappy with the way they do it. Just follow the instructions and do it yourself.
Seems like you're being a bit contradictory.

Seriously too many of these threads, this glass and gorilla glass is basically the same, just because you got lucky with a device with gorilla glass and not the GN is just that LUCK!, my cowon S9 has gorilla glass and it was scratched from just being in my pocket.
if you buy an expensive gadget spend a couple dollars and get a screen protector a few dollars now may save you alot more if you damage it. Glass, coating or no coating will always scratch.
Spend $300 + on a device but won't spend $10-$20 on a screen protector. Then cry when the screen gets a scratch, only one at fault here is you. If you're that OCD about your devices to hold the phone up right infront of you eyes... No comment there.
Zagg that's all I'm going to say, applied it to my baby when she came right out of the box because I'm the same way about my screen but go the extra mile and spend the $10 to $20 on a good screen protector lol .

I love when people imply that those who don't use screen protectors are either cheap, lazy, or dumb, yet ignore the fact that every screen protector out there degrades the look and/or feel of the screen in some manner. Some of us that are anal about scratches are just as anal about "ruining" the screen with a protector. Just saying.

I've had my GN for 3 weeks, no scratches, and it's been dropped from about 2 feet of the ground twice (indoors).

No offense, but getting annoyed about an almost imperceptible scratch on a device that you take with you everywhere you go day-in-day-out is like complaining when your nice shoes get wet. Yeah, I know you paid a lot for the thing, but the thing isn't made of unicorn-tears.
As another poster said: reality is going to happen and you have to make a concession. Protect your investment with a screen protector and take the visual hit, or enjoy the beauty of the device, but risk it getting a few scratches from normal use.
Personally I used to have a Zagg screen protector for my G1 and then my Vibrant for a few months. The Vibrant had Gorilla Glass so I got rid of the Zagg protector and was happier for it. I have enough other crap to worry about than whether my (rapidly) depreciating electronics item gets a scuff on it.

Great post. You hit the nail right on the head, especially with your middle paragraph.
It can't be stressed enough that reinforced glass isn't scratch proof. And a good screen protector doesn't affect the screen quality.

Seriously too many of these threads, this glass and gorilla glass is basically the same, just because you got lucky with a device with gorilla glass and not the GN is just that LUCK!, my cowon S9 has gorilla glass and it was scratched from just being in my pocket.

No it's not. It's not even close. I don't know why some of you persist on saying this but it simply isn't true. There are others like myself on here who have owned a gorilla glass phone for over a year and next to no one has a scratch on them. Yet we all have tiny scratches on our GN's after mere weeks. And that's absolutely babying the device compared to not giving a **** with the gorilla glass device. You do the math.

If you don't see or feel the difference, then that's good for you. Seriously. Every screen protector I've ever tried - and I've wasted a lot of money trying a lot - changes the way the screen looks in some way. Whether it's a visible texture (i.e., "orange peel" effect) or slight dulling of the colors on the screen, they do affect the screen quality in some manner. And that's not even taking the feel of the screen protectors into account.

I have to agree with this. I've come to accept the fact that this glass isn't as durable as other glass since I absolutely love this phone, but to insist that this glass is on par with other, more durable glass is being dishonest or uninformed.
I have to agree with nyijedi and vapotrini here. I thought the days of needing a screen protector were long in the past, as they should be. I wasn't nearly as careful with my SGS2 and had no problem putting it in my bare pocket. I just inspected it and saw absolutely no signs of even the smallest scratch.
Yet, I had my GNex out of the packaging for a total of 1 day before I noticed a small, visible scratch on my screen simply from either having it in the pocket of my dress pants or using the touch screen with my finger. I am a germ freak who washes my hands at least 10 times a day. I don't roll around in the dirt either so I assure you that my pockets are as clean as they can possibly be.
You guys say that after spending $300 on a phone you should be forced to spend an additional $20+ for a screen protector. But I say that a $300 phone should not have a screen with coating that can be scratched simply by putting it in your pocket. I understand that glass scratches, including Gorilla Glass. But it takes much more to scratch other Android phones than it does to scratch this thing.
It's a design flaw, pure and simple. This is a problem the first touch screen phones had. A brand new phone like this should not have such a stupid issue IMO.
What exactly is stupid about the fact that everything is susceptible to damage? No one forced you to buy the phone and no one will force you to buy a screen protector for it. Be thankful you've got the cash for something so nice in the first place and if you don't want any scratched then get a protector or leave it on the box and never use it. Or, just don't buy a screen protector at all.
Its as simple as that.

You are missing the point completely.
Let me simplify this - You can walk into the local store of any mobile carrier right now and pay less than $100 for a phone that you can use as normal on a daily basis (including putting it in your pocket), without worrying about scratching the screen. Yet, our $750 phone scratches the second you put it in your pocket and you don't see a problem with that?
The problem is that ALL of you are talking without any sufficient data to prove your point.
To make a valid statement about the quality/hardness of the GN display, you need to either scientifically test it and/or compare a lot of phones in standardized practical tests.
Unless you have done that, none of you can say anything valid about the screen.
"I am super careful with my phone, haven't scratched any of my 5 dozen phones before but I scratched my GN in 3 days" doesn't say anything at all about the glass quality and neither does the opposite.
2 scratch test videos right off youtube. Not definitive, of course, but seems to fair well to a knife and some keys.

That 2nd one breaks my heart since he's stratching the hell out of the phone AS HE'S ACTIVATING IT. Hasn't even let it get to the home screen before he tries to destroy it.
Is it nessessory for me to get a screen protector for my new SGS3?
I heavily rely on the sensitive feel on the screen, and i just don't want to sacrifice its original beauty. i heard the screen on galaxy s3 use gorilla glass, need no protector any more, but i still worry to see scratches.
How about u guys? will u buy a screen protector?
I have a zagg screen cover (regular, not full body) but didn't care for it too much. It was put on perfectly (or as perfect as it could get) and I felt like it did dull the screen colors down a bit
I recently took it off when my Diztronic case came in and now just carry a micro fiber cloth with me. If the phone goes in my pocket I can slid that right over the screen
So I'd say no screen protector. If you have an extra micro fiber cloth around I would just use that

If you don't get one, you will be Nesses-Sorry (Title spelling joke. Oh, I am so original)
In all seriousness, no, it's not. The glass is pretty tough, it may get a few little scratches, maybe one or 2 big ones over the life of the phone. BUT if you're OCD about keeping the glass pristine, you want one, because gorilla glass is not invincible.
I got one for the future resale value bonus of "No Scratches", and as long as you get a smooth dry application screen protector, you won't notice a degradation of the feel of the surface of the phone.

which kind of screen protector did u get? cuz i think smooth ones will definitly influence the touch feeling and sensitivity. i play games a lot, so i hope to maintian its sensitivity with no scraches.
Iv never used a screen protector on any of my glass screen phones starting with 3gs on launch day. Iv never had any scratches at all. My right pocket is for my phone never anything else and I never set it down. Its in my hand or pocket

agreed! I accidentally used a Starbucks napkin to clean the screen from my greasy hands and fukin regret it dearly. My screen got three pretty long noticeable scratches (visible only when the screen is off and in the light) bothers me knowing that it's there and how stupid of me to have used a recycle napkin made with "at least 40% post-consumer fiber".

Though everyone has an opinion I think that its a must. Don't be fooled by Gorilla Glass it is not scratch proof. I baby my electronics and had never scratched a screen on any device I had owned. Then I look at my Galaxy Note and there are 2 scratches from NO-WHERE. Just poof no drop no bump...
So to be cautious I will always have one now.
I had a package of cheap screen protectors from 2007.. probably not even made for touch phones! But they fit so we installed them. The touchscreen works great and the screen looks fine. I can hardly tell it's there.
I know it'd drive me crazy if I got a scratch on my phone and had to look at for the next 2 years I'd definitely recommend buying a screen protector! I'm sure anything being sold today is better than what we've got installed So hopefully you won't even notice it and can protect your screen
I ALWAYS get one. If it makes it feel cheap, you probably got a cheap and/or crappy screen protector.
I like Martin Fields and have used Seidio ones as well. ZAGG (I think it is) you can get a Best Buy and other places SUCK. They have a sticky or rather rubber feel to them so your fingers don't glide smoothly and probably are what give people the "cheap" feel. The first two I mentioned feel identical to the glass. You won't even know they're there. I get a new phone once a year and never had more than a scratch or two on the protector only. Peel it off ... brand new phone still.
I figure it also helps against breakage since there is an extra layer of protection reinforcing the structure. Kind of like laminated glass. A friend got a giant gouge in his RAZR. GIANT wound to the screen protector, but it didn't make it through to the glass surface. No cracks or even scratches ... to the glass.
I stopped investing in them. My iPhone 4 was without for a year and no scratches. The protectors had scratches but they aren't as durable as the screen

What the hell are those napkins made of? Dear lord.
Definitely get a screen protector. Get a dry install screen protector that is clear and I guarantee that you won't notice it. I recommend SGP Nano Clear for this phone. It is very easy to install and works very well with cases. The only drawback is that it leaves about 1 mm or so uncovered around the edges, but fortunately this will be covered by most cases.
If you are wondering about getting a screen protector, then get one. You may regret it otherwise.

I got the Steinhill Ultra Crystal. It's a fingerprint magnet, but so it the rest of the phone, feels just like the glass though.
Yes get a screen protector. I highly recommend that you get one. Gorilla glass 2 is not scratch proof. I already scratched my screen and my HTC evo 4g lte screen. :-(
Why would you not get a screen protector for this phone? This is not a cheap phone so do yourself a favor and get you a good screen protector. You touch the screen whenever you use the phone and everytime you touch it, you risk scratching it due to dirt being on your hands. Protect your investment!
Normally I purchase wet application protectors from bestskinsever.com but wet application protectors do not play well with tpu cases for this phone.
I recommend the Reearth dry screen protector. You can find it on Amazon for 11.99 and it includes 2 protectors. It's an awesome protector and you won't even know it's on your phone.

No ...I'm not getting one,..I dropped my s2 down a stairs, was hit head on by a drunk driver , found my phone about 200 feet from my vehicle on the road, it had one tiny scratch that you could barely see,..and the S3 has a stronger screen, but its whatever you wanna do
