hello everyone,
this is my 1st post, and sorry if wrong section...
i have desire rooted.
bootloader : 0.83 S-ON (INCORRECT)
CORRECTION: bootloader : 0.80 S-ON
i've tried to flash a ginger-based custom rom.
and it was stuck on the HTC splash screen (no boot i guess)
tried every thing, from wipe, repartion, wipe all, reset data ....
so my question, is there a minimum version of bootloader required to install and run a ginger-based rom? as i had never applied an OTA update, once i rooted the device, i flash custom roms all the time, and never updated the hboot.
thanks in advanced.
Bootloader version does not matter. Are you using the a2sd versions?

1-ROM:
AuraxTremeGinger v8.6 Gingerbread Sense 2.3.3
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052761
2- 1 GB ex3 using Amon RA.
3- Amon RA to flash the rom to.
To be honest mate I tried most of the Gingerbread roms and only a few of them worked until I alphareved, I think the gingerbread roms defo require a different hboot, I could be wrong but until I changed to s-off nothing worked

Well, Before I was s-off, I have successfully flashed many times the Insertcoin sense rom by baadnewz and many other similiar roms. I used 1GB ext 3 partition+96MB swap partition and the rest was fat32.
You should try this configuration.
In addition, what version of Amon ra's recovery are you using, for me both 2.0.0 and 2.0.1 have worked perfectly.
Good luck

hi guys, I recently failed to flash Auraxtremeginger 8.6 and I finally figured out why. It seems that Gingerbread prefers HBoot 0.93 so I...
1) flashed my phone with the latest official RUU(2.29 with HBoot 0.93 and I needed a gold card flashing from Auraxtsense 8.4 with Hboot 0.80)
2) and then reroot it with unrevoked
3) and then reset to factory settings, wiped Dalvik
4) and then install from zip in the clockwork recovery... and success...
*Note: No S-Off done in the process.
S-On, Hboot 0.93, never had any problem flashing GB roms. All worked fine (around 3 i tryed)
hello everyone
i confirm, changing to Amon Ra 2.0.1 fixed the problem
now i have the Ginger rom flashed and running

I am currently using MIUI - D2EXT and successfully S-OFF'ed my desire this morning!
it crashed on me when i said 'y' to download the recovery - wanted to see if it would pull down anything newer than 2.5.0.7
flash your own recovery and skip that part,
hboot before flash needs to be 0.93.0001

So, this is an "easy" way to S-OFF my Desire? (Yes, I'm a noob and afraid of bricking my phone since I, you know, need it to do phone stuff )
My device is rooted, running a custom recovery and MIUI, but it isn't S-OFF'd yet.
I've read that Android Flasher needs S-OFF so the bootscreen etc can be modified, but can I use Android Flasher to flash a custom recovery with an S-ON device?
Unrevoked wouldn't flash the 4EXTRecovery img I just want to make sure I can use Android Flasher instead without going through the S-OFF procedure before.
Thanks, haven't got round to S-off yet as the previous methods seemed somewhat daunting.

Agree with above quote.
Easy to use, once s-off just use any recovery. I used 4Ext 2.1.3. Just put the Pblahblahblah.img on your sd card and install through fastboot.

Best is to flash the recovery before s-off with revolutionary so you can skip that part.
as for some the recovery doesn't work in revolutionary
done in a couple of seconds.
and you don't need to use vmware or a bootable cd or usb.
I've used it. Dead easy, and the phone remained S-OFF after I PB99IMG'd it to the official GB build.
I had modified the .zip a little though, removed radio and recovery (already had newer radio and left CWM so I could root easily).

Sure: http://www.mediafire.com/file/m16ypyymn5x1spn/PB99IMG.zip
Contains no radio or recovery. Does contain HBOOT, but Revolutionary doesn't get overwritten by it.
I would like to S-OFF my Desire and want to know if either Revolutionary or Alpharev flash their own recovery in addition to doing S-OFF?
I already rooted my Desire a couple months ago with unrevoked3 and this put on Clockworkmod (unsure what version) in addition as well, but I'm happy with how it works and don't need it replaced I guess.
Which one should I use? Do I get a choice to do S-OFF only and skip replacing the recovery?

S-off dissables hboot security allowing you to flash custom recoveries, raidios, and splash screens thru hboot. It also makes it easier to re root your phone should you some how loose root or need to remove it.
Root is a way to provide you superuser permissions, so you can access all system files and functions from within the android os.
What software version are you on now?
okay thanks for clearing that up for me.
i am currently using, hboot-0.92.0000
and clockworkMod Recovery v.2.5.1.2
cm7.1 nightly i think its like android 2.3.7
and i rooted with unrevoked mac osx.

Hi
I had the same problem on a Desire. Have tried aloth of things, but was stuck on 2.5.0.7 of ClockWorksMod Recovery....
I have now switched to S-OFF - using the Revolutionary tool.
And have now been able to update teh ClockWorksMod Recovery to 5.0.2.0....
I had to change rom to cm7 - but you are on that.
I was on ISC 4.0.3, but the Revolutionary tool didn't work with that rom (or the version I was using)....
Hope this will help you in the right direction...

Hello,
sry for this noob question but I have searched this problem on the forum and it seems like that nobody else is having ´the same problem.
Since I've rooted I have been wanting to flash a custom rom on my phone. For my particular ROM the developer suggests to flash the latest Radio. I've tried to install it through the recovery ("install zip from sdcard") but my recovery just won't install it.
rooted using revolutionary. Of course s-offed. My Phone is the PVT4 SLCD with erase size of 20000
My Recovery is ClockWorkMod 5.0.2.0 (That from rom manager)
Thanks

You wrote everything except the most important part - bootloader information.
But I reckon what you'll write so probably the /cache is to small to flash radio using a .zip leaving you only with fastboot flash method.
Hi, I don't know which hboot you are using. But I think you have got one with small cache partition (5M size). If it's true, you should flash radio by fastboot.
Actually I have the stock hboot. I think the recovery is the problem. So CWM says the installation aborted. Amend scripting is no longer supported. I should switch to edify scripting. How can I do that?
for what its worth, my advice if you have a recent radio (one where second string of numbers starts with _5) then leave it and try it with the rom. If you do need to change it I'd recommend learning to use fastboot to flash as it takes other software layers out the equation.
Also, get rid of Rom Manager - you don't need it and it causes problems with Desire - and since you're s-off install 4Ext Recovery.

I had the same problem with stock hboot. I only have a Mac and Ubuntu machines, and I haven't found an easy step by step tutorial to use fastboot (only for Windows) so I'd rather do it with just the phone itself. So is it still possible to flash radio without using a computer?
On the other hand I used to have the latest radio before unrooting my phone for warranty reasons, and I can't see any difference in performance...
Here is a German Tutorial (sorry for that):
http://www.brutzelstube.de/2012/edify-scriptfehler-flashen-eines-radio-images-mittels-adb/
I had the same issue, did it with this tutorial and it worked good for me!
Short translation:
#1: Boot in the Fastboot menu (start with power+ volume down then fastboot)
#2: Install ADB http://www.brutzelstube.de/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/adb-tools.zip
#2: Extract the "radio.img" from the Radio .zip file and copy it to the ADB folder
#3: Connect your mobilphone with the Computer, wait a few seconds then navigate with cmd to the ADB folder and put the following line in: "fastboot flash radio radio.img"
#4: restart your phone
It worked for me!!!
Easier way would be Android Flasher:

For an english guide for ADB / Fastboot check my sig.

Can you or any one else provide me the link to download Clockworkmod 2.5.X.X. I cant find it anywhere.
I have 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27 baseband version and Stock hboot.
Do i need to upgrade it to install sense 3.5 roms? Are there any risk in flashing radio? As every sense 3.5 rom freezes occasionally on my desire.
Thanks
any 3.5 sense rom is too heavy for desire, you can speed it up if you use cm7r2 hboot... flashing radio is risky operation if radio flash will fail it is not recoverable in most cases, htc will replace motherboard if you can provide proper reason under warranty... you don't need to update radio to flash rom but battery life can be affected by radio...
to flash radio without ruu you must be s-off

You can flash older versions of clockworkmod recoveries in rom manager, just search from market/play store. That's what I did.

Ok bro i will see what i can do. Thanks for your help.
Hi, can anyone please help me in flashing a rom to my HTC Desire A8181. I am really frustrated with my phone because it has a very limited build-in storage which is a problem when I want to download app that is really big. Besides, it is really slow. So, I have decided that I want to flash a rom to make it runs faster and have more storage after deleting the default OS.
Currently, my OS is Android 2.2.2, I have tried to update it online but it says there's nothing to update to. I have not rooted my device before. Is there a way to just flash the rom and not root the device. If there isn't, doesn't matter. But can you please tell me the process of it, I really don't any of it, I have searched the forum but I am stuck at the s-off because I don't understand anything further than that.
Furthermore, what rom do you recommend so that my device will be running fast and smooth?
Thanks!
This is the process: S-off > install custom recovery > flash rom
To s-off you will need to use revolutionary. Boot into hboot (turn phone off then boot up using volume down + power). You will see the hboot version at the top. In order to use revolutionary your hboot needs to be 0.93.0001 or 1.02.0001, so hope its one of those.
Once youve s-offed Id recommend installing 4ext recovery. You will also need to create an ext partition (and optionally install an optimized hboot to gain more internal space for app data). Once thats done pick a rom and flash it. I would suggest any of mildwilds roms.

You use 4ext Recovery to Nandroid backup your rom - if anything goes wrong while flashing custom rom you can revert back to previous state.
ext partition (recommend 1gb ext4) is primarily for App2SD (can also be done via 4ext recovery).
Consider changing HBOOT to Oxygen r2 to expand maximum internal memory once s-off have been achieved.
I also recommend Mildwild Roms.
Thanks guys! I have successfully rooted my device, flashed the mildwild rom and created an ext-partition in my sd card. Really appreciate all your help!
