wet defy - Defy General

hi all! in the last two weeks i got a serious battery drain, and i couldnt figure out why, reflashed sbf, calibrated battery dozens of times, etc. now i think ive found the answer: my defy got wet (both white indicators on the battery and under the battery are red, which means contact with water). all right, i did test its waterproofness quite a few times (taken underwater videos, dunk it in beer, listened to music in the shower, etc.), but ive been doing that for a few months now, never had any problems. strange thing is i switched batteries with a friend (hes got a dry defy ), now both phones work fine, no battery drain. seems like wet decice and wet battery equals battery drain anyways, i posted this thread to warn everybody that defy is not so waterproof after all, if it survived swimming once, it doesnt meam itll survive it next time...
sent from my cm7 defy...

Hi. You are lucky. The defy never was water proof, it is water resistant. And even so, I don't thrust the usb cover at all for any kind of tests like those.

Defy is actually pretty much waterproof as far as properties go but like every substance its qualities also tend to fade away. If y'all haven't noticed the phone comes with a guide where there is an indication of a waterproofing agent that is applied on the ridges of the back cover, you should always make sure you haven't wore it out. There are loopholes for the the water to make it inside but if you make sure it can't, it wont.
Sent from my MB525 using Tapatalk

i always make sure the back/jack/usb covers are closed, but still somehow the water got in. but it seems that only my battery is damaged, so i really got lucky, cuz i wont jave to replace the phone (i wanted to buy a bigger battery anyway).
sent from my cm7 defy...

As I said there are always loopholes. I went as far as hosing down on my defy face front soon after there were malfunctions and I could spot water vapors at the screen on the inside. Took it apart, a night in the dry rice containment and it was up and ready the next day. Except for that I casually wet my defy maybe once or twice every week and it turns out fine.
Sent from my MB525 using Tapatalk

As for your battery I think your waterproofing agent completely gave away hence favoring that particular anomaly.

I've heard you have to keep an eye on the grease that lubricates the rubber in the back cover. It dries out or wears off and it allow water in.

Evo in a Hot Tub :(

Sorry, forgot to put my thread title as a question.
So, this new appartment i'm at has a hot tub and 2 pools available, so tonight we decided to go to the hot tub. I usually take my phone with me to play music as we are sitting around relaxing by the pool or hot tub(speaker is loud enough to put it a fair distance away). This time, being the idiot that I am, i walked into the hot tub with the phone in my pocket, took me a good minute or two before i realized. I realized this, having just turned the phone on two minutes before i went to the pool after swapping batteries, and took it out of my pocket and it wasn't on. Took the battery out immediately and wrapped it in my towel, brought it in about ten minutes later, wiped up remaining water, and put it in to a jar full of rice. Thing is, i had a 3rd party battery in it when it was there, i know the water damage indicator is on the battery(not sure if there are more in the phone). Because i didn't have the default batter in it, in case that it does work(which it probably won't, i can see water under the screen), would i possibly be able to get away with saying it just stopped working? I looked at the ifixit teardown and only saw them point out 1 water damage indicator, on the battery. So XDA, am i screwed or what? From what i looked up sprint doesn't cover water damage, which sucks, what, if they find out, will i have to pay to replace my evo?
I think I would be astounded at HTC's stupidity if the only water damage indicator was on the most easily user-replacable part: the battery. Seriously, there would be absolutely no point in having a water damage indicator if anyone could just buy a new battery, throw it in, and claim that their Evo just somehow stopped working.
If you have insurance, it covers water damage-- but just like loss or theft, you have to pony up for the $100 deductible.

I was guessing there were more, but I was going specifically off of what i remember from the ifixit teardown. Well, that's a bummer, i was hoping it was more like $50, but $100 isn't bad, could be worse :\.
I dropped mine in the water for like 3 seconds this week. I actually called Sprint and they told me as long as I have insurance (which I do) they would cover it. I heard the rice thing works but I didn't try it. What I DID do, was put my phone in the oven at 100F for about 2 hours. I just put a cookie sheet in there and put my phone on a paper towel. I know people say "oh wtf you put it in the oven?!?!" but really......100F isn't a temp that your phone never sees so there really isnt any harm. Anyways, it worked GREAT for me. Pulled all the water out of the screen and out of the camera lens and now it works perfectly.
oh wtf you put it in the oven?!?!
It's a good thing you and your friends don't like to enjoy a slice of toast in the hot tub.
I have a water damage indicator like..RIGHT inside the bottom right side of the back. Just under the battery cover. Does nobody elses phone have one right there?
Also, I've seen pictures of the motherboard of the phone. There is one on there was well.

No, its to the right. Not all the way, closer to the middle than it is to the corner. Its a white square with red stripes. I have an 002. Might be different on 003. *shrug*

Yeah I found it. There is one on my battery too. The red stripes indicate water damage? Because mine have red stripes haha.
here's what I would try, this worked on my Zune HD when it got soaked in a cup of vodka, and hopefully this works on my friend's samsung phone she just got. Take the phone apart completely, use q-tips to dry it, use q-tips with rubbing alchohol to clear the water and any buildup of crap from the water, then put the individual parts in rice, which will dry it much faster. Afterwards, maybe 2-3 days later, put device back together and BAM! it works! my Zune's been working for 2 weeks now with no problems, and the liquid was under the screen, and my friend's phone, well she dropped it in the toilet yesterday, and it's sitting in pieces yet to be put into rice, too busy right now, will do it later.
A few years ago my friend did a cannonball into the pool and realized mid-air that his phone was still in his pocket. I'll never forget the expression on his face.

No, all red is a triggered indicator. The red pattern is so that you can't bleach the indicator and lie about what happened.
I have tried the rice thing.. takes too long. My to2 I have dropped in the toilet (fell out of my sweatshirt front pocket while lifting to take a leak) fell in a puddle and a beer poured on it. Stick works great. What I did is present over to 200 degrees. Once presented place phone without battery and back onto middle rack onto if a cloth. Leave for an hour. Check phone to see if water is in screen. Repeat process 2-4 times.
With the rice I had a problem of dust and rice stuck on phone. Hard to get out of cracks. Also you can go to Sprint and say your battery isnt working without your phone if with your phone after you don't the oven trick. They should replace it. If they see that its been water damage tell them you had a lol brother or sister take your battery out and found it like that. They prob will check to see if phone works with new one and should. Good luck.. this saved me plenty of times. The tp2 was from us cellular and did battery exchanges no questions asked.

Your battery might of shorted out. When you put back together charge first because the water drains the charge. If it doesn't work after a charge you need a new battery.

Not reccomended but....at my store's service in repair we didnt go off just indicators alone, altho the motherboard one is fairly hard to say it didnt get soaked to.
butt the battery and outside one yes, If you tear the phone down and clean off the corrosion most of the time the phone will function fine after that.
Second benefit is that if there is no corrosion then we normally replace the phone in store anyway.
YMMV
anyway if it cant be saved via standard preventative stuff time to make an insurance claim :-(
Not sure if this method will work for everyone but it worked for my old Nokia phone. I washed it with a load of laundry and dried it in the dryer. Found the phone in the dryer, wouldn't turn on so I pulled the battery and stuck it back in, phone worked great after that.

[Q] Water sensors

I've heard that despite being designed for water resistance, the Defy has water sensors which can be checked for warranty purposes. Can anyone here report the locations of these sensors? And if you took your Defy for a bath, are the sensors now affected?
I guess most handset have these type of sensors today and there actually just stickers that get colored when moisture reaches them. So the only way to find out if you triggered it would be to physically open up the device before and after exposure. Since the Defy is not water proof I'm pretty sure that they will not replace your phone if it has been water damaged. If you just forget the caps on the USB or headphone outputs it will propably be damaged by water and you would void your warranty.
One is one the edge of the battery, it's a white rectangle with pink X's on it; the other is under the battery on the device itself. It's a tiny white hexagon.
the battery door is air tight, but only up to 3 feet I believe. so if you drop it in the toilet or in a cup of tea, the phone will be fine and the water stickers wont be affected. I would assume that there might be another on the inside of the phone.
Eh.. I would want to test this phone so bad..
Infact I'm considering bringing a ziplock bag full of water to the tmobile store and demanding the phone be tested before I buy it. Making sure that they bring out the one I'm going to buy and testing that one specifically.
If they say no its w/e. But, I want to see a test before I jump in head first.
With that said, the folks at engadget I think it was ruined one of the two test units because the flap on the back of the battery didn't go in right.

OK, so I have had mine in a few glasses of water at restaurants (people bragging to me there was nothing their phone couldn't do that my could) and in a hot, tall Starbucks (regular coffee) at a meeting that almost gave everyone a heart attack. And, you must have seen the video where they start the camcorder and drop it to the bottom of a pool? W/O issues? I'm thinking of having a holster made for it that clips to the front of my snowboard.
They would be inside where the battery is stored. This part of the phone is, naturally, not water proof (battery, sd and sim card contacts). There is a water resistant gasket on the seal where the backing goes. It is spring tensioned so it makes a good, watertight seal. So, I would not sweat triggering the moisture sensor IF you have the back of the phone on correctly.
I wouldn't go deep sea diving with the phone either... water proof or not. I don't see any harm in having the phone in your pants pocket on the floor while your taking a shower though..
Sorry, for some reason I didn't see the NUMEROUS replies to your post. I basically just parroted off what the others had said.

Moisture indicators are common-place in phones, generally there's one on the battery and another one on the phone in the area the battery sits in.
Most of them are white and turn a very noticeable red when damp however some others are, as people have described, white with a coloured pattern and the smudging of the pattern is the indication.
That said, any engineer worth their salt will be able to open up the handset and check the circuit-boards themselves for corrosion, the indicators are there to speed up matters but are by no means the only way in which moisture damage can be detected.
put it to water?

[Q] Dropped Epic in Toilet

Dropped it in toilet drunk, got it out. Noticibly slower, many things FC, some keys don't work.
Already have 2 insurance claims this year, can't get a replacement that way. How can they tell it's water damaged? I noticed a pink sticker thing on the battery, is this some sort of water damage indicator? I have a spare battery if thats the only thing that would alert the techs to this being my fault.
If I took it in with a different battery after odinging to stock would they just think it crapped out on me due to no responsibilty of my own?
That suck man.... here's a link about the water indicator's..... and I think the reps would look for corrosion over the indicators because if they get the phone before it rusts then they can dry it out correctly......
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1147570
Yeah, looks like I'll have to take it to them and play dumb, and if they mention the water damage and refer me to asurion who I don't think will do more than 2 claims in a year, I'll just pull the cancel card, bring up the 2 100 dollar rebates that I never got and get a nexus s for 250
this is the third time i've heard about the epic being dropped in water and it still worked(ish) freaking incredible! kudos samsung
I could be mistaken but I thought TEP allowed you more claims than just 2 a year, maybe quite a few more. Good luck.

Me as well. Someone dropped theirs in a pot of Tomato Soup and it still worked. If you havent , let it dry without battery, back cover, also remove SD. You may get lucky and have a full functioning phone again. If that doesn't work, try saying you work construction and phone got damp from being in your pocket while working. My touchscreen broke and I took it to get repaired. At first the tech said I was screwed because of a hairline crack in the plastic around the screen. I explained that it failed before that. So, I was extra friendly. I started talking about upcoming phones, etc. Well, he ended up giving,me a new screen, keyboard, back cover. Only my motherboard was original. Paid nothing. If you don't have insurance, be cool and don't get upset. I bet $35 gets you a new whatever needs to be replaced...maybe some extras like I did

My girl dropped her EVO in the toilet, dead. I dropped mine in a sink full of water, it actually sat there for about 3 full seconds until i reailzed what the splash was. Pulled it out, set it next to a little portable heater for a few hours and to my astonishment it still worked perfectly. Some water must have gotten in the screen as it is a little blury in a small spot but other than that I'm still using it like it's new. If you've ever taken one of these apart, it is easy to see how hard it would be for water to fully get inside the case.
Son spilled soda all over mine. I cleaned it up and dried out battery. That was 7 months ago and it works like a champ. I am getting a galaxy s 2 when they hit the u s.

Just dropped mine into the toilet about an hour ago. when i finished getting over the idea that I, too, was now one of those people, i put down the litter box I was about to scoop and fished it out.
Next thing I did was rip the back off and dump the battery, idea being to avoid any shorts caused by water mixed with power on circuit board. It had been in there for like 3 seconds, maybe 4.
I knocked it about for a while to see how much water would pour out - not much! So I let in dry out for like 10 mins, knocked it out a bit again, then put the battery in. First thing I noticed was that it seemed to turn on BEFORE I pressed the power button, something I specifically noticed. Hmmm.
The rest seemed normal enough. I was crazy impressed! Even a small dunk in a toilet (clean, luckily) is not a drop in a shallow puddle.
However, a bit later I needed to boot into recovery, and I couldn't get the freakin' phone to shut off. I mean it would shut off but come right back on again. I was thinking, water drop in the power button or worse a permanent short.
When I took the back off I saw that the camera had moisture inside of it. I remembered when this happened to a telephoto lens of mine recently and I extended the lens all the way as I walked. The lens casing heated in the sun and the moisture came out through the uh, rings? of the fully-extended lens.
So imagining that if the water could get in, it could get out, I broke out the hairdryer. It's a small one I've used for putting that plastic stuff over windows in the winter. I put it on high and held it like 2 or 3 feet from the back of the phone (cover off) for a while, always moving it to avoid hot spots on the phone. After a min or 2 the moisture was gone. I spent another min waving the dryer over the power button.

I suppose one has to know the rules before you can break them. I have some experience with electronics and circuit boards, and have a feel for how much heat I could safely apply to the thing. I tried to indicate this in the original message by writing that I kept the dryer a few feet away from the phone, that it is a small dryer, and that I always kept it in motion. Oh and that I performed this maneuver over a period of a few minutes.
If anything goes wrong I'm sorry to say it was because I dropped it into a toilet. The age old tried and true blow dryer method, when properly applied, wouldn't be a problem.

RIP My Motorola Defy :'( [Read please]

Yesterday (2/11/2011) my defy passed away at around 3PM because of this stupid sea water...
-I went in the sea unconscious that my Defy was in my pocket, when I realised, I immediately got out of the water to check it. It was not powering on!! So I dried it, open the rear case and removed everything from it.
Then when I returned home I put it in uncooked rice, and desiccant, but in vain.
-My phone is not really dead, it's in an eternal coma, the phone boots up! That said, I see the blue/green LEDS when I power it on. It even vibrates when booting, but unfortunately the display and the softkeys remain black :'(
(No haptic feedback,no sound, etc)
Update: Haptic feedback works and so do the loudspeaker!
So this is my Defy's story, which lived ~275 days, lol
I wonder how to revive it... If it's possible.
Right now I don't know what phone to buy really... I'm thinking of an LG Optimus Black, dual-core phones are too costly haha.
To not make this thread useless, user are welcomed to post how their defy passed away, and what will be your next phone,etc...

I really don't think this thread should be in the development-section.
First off, this sould indeed not be in the development section.
Second off your Defy has a 2 year warranty so you can still claim it on warranty, your phone should be able to resist a short time in water. It didnt, so send it to a Motorola cerified repair center and claim you warranty.
Greetings and good luck!

Personally I wouldn't give up on it until a week has gone by. I know smartphones are more complex but old Nokias that got wet could take up to a week to dry out fully and then power on.

So this is my Defy's story, which lived ~275 days, lol
I wonder how to revive it... If it's possible.
Right now I don't know what phone to buy really... I'm thinking of an LG Optimus Black, dual-core phones are too costly haha.
To not make this thread useless, user are welcomed to post how their defy passed away, and what will be your next phone,etc...

Every electronic device sold in the EU must have 2 years Warranty MINIMUM, and there are a few extra things in the UK, if an item gets repaired 2 times, the customer can ask and must receive if asked a new Product if it breaks a third time.
Regarding salty water, even if you manage to make it work its gonna die shortly, the salt destroys everything inside the phone its the worst think that can happen to any electronic device.
And motorola doesnt cover Water Damage, the phone is Water Resistant not Water Proof. I think you cant find any item nowadays in the market labeled and sold as Water Proof
really crappy that it happened
strange how people tend to kill their defys, mine had been underwater a lot (really, taking pictures, going swimming, listening to music in the shower, etc.), and the only problem i got is that water got inside, turned both water damage indicators red (one on the phone just above the motherboard, and one on the battery near the pins), but the only thing that changed is that my battery drains faster.
We all know that there are two kinds of waters that dangerous to electronics: Rains and Sea Salt water.
But I'm thinking. The Defy has at least 12 months of warranty - 365 days, and you use it for over 200 days and give up ? Why not going to the warranty ?
Last, hope you has a better replacement.

There are a few water indicators in the Defy, outside and inside it. If any of these indicators are red (meaning water got inside) you void your warranty.
The phone is water resistant, not water proof. There is a HUGE difference between both terms, hence all the electronic devices for the past 10 years or more, that can handle water, are labeled as Water Resistant. Not Proof.

My phone has also been under water a lot, I took it to a water park not long ago and got into some of those highspeed super awesome Water Slides with it
The problem you are facing is, that probably there is a small short in your battery, once the battery gets wet it tends to get sulfated and that causes the batt to discharge alone. You could just get a new batt
Thanks for all your replies haha.. I think that I'm gaining hope again and I'll try to see the Agency first. Then if it doesn't work eventually I'll visit a Motorola phone retailer (there's HOPEFULLY 1, only 1 in my country haha)

i already ordered a 2300mah battery (slim, not extended), will test it tomorrow
sent from my cm7.1 defy...
IMHO if I got the same problem, I will buy a temporary phone, use it and wait until another rugged smartphone not. Maybe it will be the DEFY 2 (Just imagine) with ARMv8 and Lotus Glass (even better than Gorilla Glass)
search xda and youtube on how to open up your defy, its bloody easy, then spray WD40 or isopropyle alcohol to clean the PCB board where rust or water damage is visible, then leave outside to dry for a day.
If the battery did not fry the circuits, then it should still work fine.
worth a try if you cant claim warranty, good luck.

Mineral water "bath" - will my phone evenutally die?

Yesterday my phone got spilled with sparking mineral water. I found it in sort of boot loop, realised what happened, pulled the battery, tried to dry it a bit, tried turning it on (not a good idea, I know now), then turned it off again and left it to dry with a fan. My phone sort of turned on then, only the screen was still a bit weird, shortly flashing from time to time from brown color to home screen. Anyway, today it seems to be OK. BUT I read now that any water that is not distiled water can cause corosion because of mineral content. Obvisouly my water had lots of mineral contents. So my phone is now just hanging by the thread before it dies? I am not about to go get it all wet now to wash it down with distiled water, alchol or one of those repair kits they are offering. I might just make things worse. Does this mean I better start shopping for Note 3?
Water just heavily increased the probability for your phone early retiring.
If say for healthy phone the time before 50% fault chance is 5 years of everyday service, you shortened it maybe as twice.
Yet it may be fully conditioned for next 10 years. Or be killed tomorrow from other reasons...
I'd start to collect money for the next device. But would never rush to buy it before the days of the current one are over. it's not a too long wait those days, you have plenty of sellers.
I always have near my old Motorola Atrix with a parallel SIM card. Helps me when I overplay to much with ROMs and kernels.
Well that sounds pretty encouraging in a way. Thanks!
I have a N1 which was in the washing machine for at least 20 Minutes back in 2009. The bluetooth chip was fried but everything else is still working.
If you wanne be sure that the problem is note getting bigger you have to make sure the phone is completely dry before using it. I'd turn it off, remove the backcover, put it in a rice bowl and let it sit in a warm and dry enviroment for a few days. Mineral water is one of the better things you can wash you're phone with .
