Hi all,
I must admit that I am completely new in the SW development for this kind of platforms. Therefore, I would like to ask you guys to direct me to a good way to start.
I have an application in mind that i would like to do it myself, and is for a personal application, so nothing to do with what is out... but it will involve the touch screen and it has to deal with a little database.
In other words, it would be like....
The main screen should be 9 squares (similar to a numeric keyboard), and pressing any one of those squares should pop/up a different screen with a list that correspond to that specific square (exactly how the calendar works).
There should be a secondary window to enter data to the list where I shoud associate every entry with an square.
This is basically all...
I have good experience programming C/C++... but not c sharp. So any document, example code, api, that you can provide is very welcome...
Thanks you all in advance...
Hi,
there is an issue on Sense's SMS app (and actually in Android SMS app) and non-GSM 7-bit characters. This ticket on Android's Google Code explains it well : code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=6522 (seems like that has a new user i can't share "real" links).
It's kinda annoying when you're not an english user (a simple accent use 60 chars).
Seems like a simple option for turning off unicode should work...
My question : is it possible for you guys to fix this in roms ? Maybe easier by updating stock sms app ? Not possible at all ?
Thx in advance for your replies !
I fully agree! An option to turn off special characters (some accents work without using 60 chars, like é à è). would be great!
This is a bug in Android and judging by its age, I won't hold my breath to a solution. Even more if it's solved at framework level. This way, we'll be waiting long time for it to be release in an official HTC update.
For the time being, I'm using HTC IME mod with character replacement in SMS. Settings -> Language & Keyboard -> HTC_IME mod -> Text Input (mods by jonas)...
This way it is still possible to have text prediction and, in SMS, the forbidden characters are replaced.
It's NOT a fix. Just a very good workaround. At least when using Compact QWERTY.
Resurrecting this thread as it is annoying.
That and the fact that on my old Nokia phones (N82 at least, my previous one, for sure), I had an option to prevent this.
Character encoding — To use character conversion to another encoding system when available, select Reduced support.

This was in Messaging>Options >Settings > Text message.
When "Reduced support" was selected, even with special characters, the char count wouldn't go from 160 to 70 when using those characters. Isn't there such an option in Android ?
As non-english languages often use those chars (â, ê...) using 2 sms when I could use one sucks.
The workaround above is OK (not really, need to use qwerty ), but I like to use the correct spelling of words.
Thanks if anyone can help with this issue.
Hi,
if you want to phone somebody - let's call him Jochen Altmann - you can dial J-O-C... (5-6-2...) and the contacts get checked for matches. The more letters you type, the less possible hits are displayed. This also works when you start by typing the last name A-L-T...
Strangely, this does not work if the first name contains an Umlaut (ä, ö, ü) or a German ß. If that is the case, the contact won't be displayed. E.g. if I wanted to call 'Jürgen Altmann', neither typing J-Ü-R... (5-8-7...) nor A-L-T... makes the contact show up. The contact is totally ignored, as if it didn't exist.
This problem does NOT appear, if only the LAST name contains ä, ö, ü or ß.
Also, the problem does NOT appear, if the first name contains any other special letter like é.
The problem seems to affect a number of people, not only my phone. And it seems to be a Fairphone issue, not an Android issue.
Any solution available?
Best,
smartn

This is really an Android problem. Also because the search only matches the begin of a word you can not search for "rgen" for example.

1. No, as stated before, this is NOT an Android problem - it did not occur on other Android 4.2.2 mobiles that I've tried.
2. You're right, the search term has to match the beginning of a word. But this is the way it works, no matter what specific letters the search term contains, so it's not a bug but the way it's meant to be.

I did not look at the code I tried entering a few name containing special chars and once I was able to reproduce the problem searched the web for an answer:
I found the following thread from 2009!
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=3732
Thanks for your effort, _keesje, but after flying over a good portion of the 235 entries on the website which you linked, it seems to me as if they were dealing with another bug in the search function: the problem that a contact search is only limited to the names, so you can't search by company etc.
Surely a problem worth mentioning, but not the least helpful in the matter I'm dealing with - or did I miss anything? If so, please provide the number of the entry.

In the meantime, Fairphone has replied to my direct request:
"Thank you for your email. Our development team is aware of this issue, and we hope to include a fix the future update.
Cheers,
Rick"
I hope so, too.
But meanwhile, I'm still thankful for any other approach...
Sorry if I have placed this in the wrong forum but my question is.
I am looking for a custom dialer app
All I want is the ability to select a contact and have the phone dial it. I do not want people to be able to dial using the numeric pad. I would like the pad to be password protected so that only an administrator can add or remove contacts. So basically when they hit the phone symbol it simply pulls up the contact list only. I have searched hi and low and can not find anything. If I have to code it myself I will, I am proficient in 6502 assembly as well and Visual Basic, forth and several other non c/java languages. Willing to learn but hope someone can assist.
Hello fellow users. I have a question about items displayed on the time line bar. If you delete these items, do they actually delete the data from the tablet as well, or just the notification? The reason I ask. I got this huge update ( download ) from Hancom which had a number of different formatted letters, fonts, etc. There are a huge number of them . I want to be sure I keep them, but if they are only on display in the timeline, I will delete them as they no doubt take up a lot of space. Thank you for any thoughts.
Bill
Gee---I can't believe this question has been here this long, with this many people viewing it, and no one has thoughts, or solutions. Must be time to try another forum.
