I was just wondering, if my service gets cut off, how functional will my Incredible 2 be. Will it essentially become an ipod touch, and only work over wifi? Or will the wifi even work at all? And if it does work over wifi, what kind of apps can I download to make and receive wifi phone calls?

you can use wifi and the market, browse the web...etc. as far as texting or calls its probably not going to happen. my advice is to work out a payment plan with verizon.
this phone is gsm capable though. could u pop in a straight talk Sim or does that run off another band?

You could technically use Google voice for texting. As for calls, on an aosp rom that supports wifi calling, you might be able to setup a pbxes account and use SIP internet calling. Lol

I use Skype for work and have both a subscription and a phone number with them. It costs $60 a year for unlimited calling to any number in the US and Canada, and the full Skype app in the Market works fine. On a wifi-only phone, you could definitely use it for general calling.
Should work just fine with WiFi but as for calls I don't know a way to do that over WiFi
(Qik?) Haven't really tried since I have my DInc2
I have an Aria I got when AT&T bought out Alltel in my area, but since AT&T is CRAP I went to Verizon (Never looked back)
I still use the Aria as a "Micro tablet" LOL It works fine over WiFi for music & Games etc. I imagine the DInc2 would behave the same way.
Mostly stays next to my TV for quick Internet access when I need it.
I also use my Eris for internet, torrent, mp3 and Pandora. I hadn't even thought about the fact it could be used as a "home phone".
Sweet.

Just saw the header at AC. Is it free WiFi calling or something?
Has to be since you can already make calls over WiFi with the Evo ... right?

err i don't think it works on Evo.
It's available in Android 2.2, but it's up to the network and the phone developer to allow it.
Not sure why I said has to be, or what that even pertained too.
Was more a question of "why" since you already can, unless it was free. Can't find any info on it being free, so why port? Even if it worked, unless it was free. Guess that's what I meant if that even makes sense.

I believe that part of the UMA technology that allows wi-fi calling is hardware based but I wonder how the wi-fi calling works? It might not check back with the network looking for a feature to be on your account, it could just route it via WiFi. I really don't know. It would be helpful to have a dev look at the .apk but I haven't seen it posted or seen the OTA for the G2 yet. This would be WONDERFUL if we could get this working!
Sounds like it would be routed as voip with you network number.. Kind of like an airave.

I am pretty sure that the Evo does this already. I heard a Sprint employee say so in a store (though that should hardly be taken to mean that it is fact), and I can make and receive phone calls in my office, where I have zero cell service, but do have wifi.

BS. Sprint doesn't do calls over WiFi. Odds are, when you made the call, it dropped to the 1X 850MHz network, but when you looked at the service bars, it was on the 3G 1900MHz network.
As for the OP, no, it won't work. The T-Mo' WiFi calling will use their private VoIP servers and accounts. Your best bet is still to get your own SIP client (like Sipdroid), provider (like Sipgate), and tie that into Google Voice.
IMHO Our best bet at WiFi calling (On Sprint) will be with using a solution via SIPDroid, Nimbuzz or Skype.
Does the droid incredible support wifi calling?
i saw that the vibrant has a app for it that did wifi calling which made me think of my droid incredible
so is any1 looking at making a app that will make it do wifi calling with a app of some sort like the vibrant and is there no need for one?
I'm using sense 3.0 and ive played with it enough i think to never see that feature on it before.
For me the only1's to get signal were i live is at&t and us cellular lol.
Look for Groove IP in the Market. Groove uses your Google Voice number to make calls over a data connection--WiFi or mobile data.
If you are running gingerbread there is internet calling built in. Look at the bottom of the settings - call menu. Also sipdroid, csipsimple (i think that how its spelled) and others can do the same. And, as the poster above mentioned, you can setup Google voice to make internet calls for you. I have a decommissioned Droid Eris setup to take and receive calls over wifi, that replaced my home phone because it costs me nothing. Let me know if you want links to threads with more info

Well i guess i haven't used the rom enough haha. thanks for taking the time to reply to my silly question lol
Do you need to have cellular service on the phone you want to setup IP/Wifi calling on? I also have a decommissioned Eris that I'd like to setup, but when I try Google Voice, it tries to verify my number and fails (as expected on a phone with no service).
It's been a while since I set up a GV number but why are you trying to connect your GV number to a phone? If you do that it will attempt to verify it. Can you just sign up for a number without doing that? If so, once you do just sign in to that GV number with GrooVe IP from decomissioned phone. You don't need and active celluar service on it.

does anyone know of an app that allows free wifi calling?...i've seen a bunch of stuff on google about google voice being able to or something like that but i can't figure it out...and when i say "wifi calling", i mean like what t-mobile offers, just using the wifi connection to make calls to any landline or cell phone without needing to add friends or anything like that..
Thanks in advance
nope
I dont think there are any apps for that, ive looked before to no avail
I know that Fring will allow you to call any phone for a per min call, and they have pretty cheap rates. I think in the US 5 bucks gets you 500 min of calls or something like that at .9 cents a min to us land and cell, but you do get a new number.
Also sip in 2.3.3 allows some kind of backward calling with google voice. Look into that if you want to keep your number the same.
Also Sprint offers the airave. Look into that if you have a signal issue at your house.
But WIFI calling is only T-Mobile and will never work for another carrier unless that carrier makes their own version.
GrooveIP
I use it for work, especially when I am almost over my mins or have poor signal

This. My only gripe is there are a few numbers they block (google).
Is there an app that I can download somewhere or is this something that someone could throw together for use with the Nexus?
I work right outside of Tmobile service area. I usually get about a bar or 2, on a good day. I rarely ever use the phone, didnt even realize these things could make calls anymore!
Anywho, I had an Amaze which had wifi calling and the call quality would be crystal clear over wifi calling and did wonders for saving battery.
Any help would be much appreciated!
I was disappointed to find out also that it was unavailable on the GNex and from what I read on it it's near impossible to port it over.
An alternative may be a combo of Google Voice & Groove IP, I use that combo on my Moto Xoom Tablet and it work fine.
OK so maybe I don't understand how groove IP works....but when I make a call over wifi the phone is still looking for a mobile signal. While I was in the call the phone showed one bar or service. So at that point isn't the lack of cellular signal still going to eat away at my battery?
I suppose grove is made more for a situation where you have no service at all? I tried putting the phone in airplane mode and make a call that way which does work.....but then your screwed with the texts......ugh....FML! Ha.

Heres a screenshot showing one bar even when I am on wifi within a call over groove. If i remember correctly when wifi calling was being used on the Amaze, the mobile signal would be turned off completely.
Hopefully with the One S out now we'll be able to get wifi calling? Anyone heard any progress on that?

Download "Viber". This is an OTA/WIFI calling app. Also dl "phone + WIFI on/off" widget. Both available in the market.

Viber requires both parties to have the app installed if I'm not mistaken. I think that is unrealistic.

that is why we left tmobile it would cut out swell groove should work fine why dont you disable data then turn wifi on and link up tjat way it will work like a charm i promise
I'm not sure I follow you too well. I'm still a noob. Would you care to elaborate on that.

Try the Vonage app. You can make calls over Wifi and data the other person does not need to have the Vonage app to receive calls. It's only good for making outbound calls on Wifi or data. (Doesn't count against mins either) If you receive a call it goes through regular cell service and bucket of mins. You can make calls to any where in the US for free. Right now you can use up to 3,000 mins a month for free to make calls. (Promo with no end date set)
But in order to receive calls the radio would have to be left on or else they will go directly to voicemail right. Which means I would have to leave the radio on.....so once again I would have low reception leading to eating up better. But anyways I think you maybe mistaken....vonage app says the other person must have the app. FML! Ha.

Looking to enable wifi calling for CM10. It is obviously there in the default Tmobile stock.
Not possible for CM10 and developers will probably never build it in since most phones/providers don't support wifi calling. Also, unlike phones like my old HTC G2 where wifi calling is a separate app, the SGS2 implements a new version of wifi calling that is built into the ROM.
Bottom line, if you need or want wifi calling, you need to be on a TW ROM, no if's or but's about it.

Thanks for the info!
Actually, these guys are really misleading you. It's not that it can't or won't be done, it just hasn't been done yet.
There was even a version of T-Mobile WiFi calling that worked great on the HTC HD2 which wasn't even an Android phone, so it's completely false to say "Not possible for CM10", it just hasn't been done yet. They may be correct that it will never be built in, but someone will eventually make a derivative ROM that will have it, or you will have a flashable zip for it.
You can also use voip.

Groove-IP works pretty good
I've seen a lot of people suggesting that we use our Google Voice (GV) number instead of WiFi calling.
If I use GV, and assuming I set it up properly....
When people call my cell number, does it ring when I only have wifi and no cell service?
When I make calls out on WiFi only, so people see my cell number or my GV number?
In what ways is it different than use T-Mobile WiFi calling?

You can forward you cell number to your google voice number, when you want wifi calling. I have mine set up to start at 6pm till 8am when I'm home. Works perfectly. I use grooveIP free, with a strong wifi signal, calls are very clear.

can someone explain to me why wifi calling is cool?
WiFi calling is "cool" or useful because it allows for using WiFi as cell phone signal. I've worked in buildings which had no cell phone signal, and without WiFi calling, it would take hours for a text message to find the signal to creep through, so it was very useful.
I've tried GrooveIP and GVoice and they were way too buggy to rely on.

And to add to this...some of us use our voice in certain areas mostly (like home) and Wi-Fi calling allows us to get a low minute plan since Wi-Fi calling doesn't use minutes.

Actually it can or does use your minutes... I know sounds foolish huh. I've seen some discussions on this in a few different places/sites and I still don't have a 100% clear answer. On the TMOUSA site regarding wifi calling, towards the bottom in grey txt it says:
"Capable device and Wi-Fi connection required. Wi-Fi Calling may decrement plan minutes. Except for UMA devices, device will not transition between Wi-Fi and the wireless network."
I think it's a case of if you're using it excessively they would start to deduct it kind of thing, but who knows. It's probably so they can change their minds in the future without any hassle, for instance, if people are using the heck out of it and they are losing as a result.
By default, it will use your minutes but now they have a free WiFi calling feature that you can add which makes calls made over WiFi free + unlimited, at least that's how it was last time I knew.
I would also really love to see the feature added to cm10 someday... It used to come with cm7 when I used it on my G2.
