if iupdate with the OTA
will all, my custom ROM features be gone?
AFAIK you should never update with OTA if you are using a custom rom.
hmm.. iwas just wondering
If you are rooted, and accept an OTA, you will lose root. So no, don't do it.
The OTA will remove root, your custom ROM, etc. etc. etc. and put you at stock 2.3.3, and in order to root that you will have to downgrade back.
Simply put, if you're rooted, flash a pre-rooted OTA ROM, or keep your custom ROM or one of the many based on the new 2.3.4 OTA's. Get all the features and won't lose root.
yea ijuss wanted to knoe what would happen

If you want to update to a ROM based on the OTA, but keep root, you can flash one of the many Pre-rooted OTA builds in the dev section. Or you can always flash a different custom ROM thats based on 2.3.4 also.

i know it'll not be rooted anymore but will it break if i check for updates and update it
if you want to upgrade then yes you will loose root. it should update no matter what unless you are using a different rom or the leaked version of froyo that went out on july 31st. not to sure about the rom thing
i am using a diffrent rom
fresh evo or something
so how do i update?
well if you can update try going to settings > System Updates > Software Update
but i would definitely read around the site a little to see if it will work. It has been a while since i have flashed a custom rom before.

Why not just flash a rooted froyo rom? Unless u really wana go back to stock don't update to ota through system updates via settings. I would just flash one of the many froyo rooted roms on this site if I were you.

Ya either that or modify the update's hboot.img to the engineering hboot..0.76...the flash the update...finally, flash Su-e-unsecured.zip
Most roms (i am pretty sure FRESH doe) block the update using the settings update. If you go to the stock rooted rom you should be able to update or if you "unroot" first you can then go to the ota update and get official 2.2.
I will say flipz just put out his fresh 3.0 froyo based rom it is working great for me with froyo while keeping root.
this is probably a noob question but this is my second android phone and the first one was already rooted so i didnt to update OTA.
Anyways i have desire z from bell unlocked on fido and not rooted so when android 2.3 is out for this phone can i get it OTA, do i have to rooted just to update it, or do i have to switch to bell to update it?
I'm sure the update will be here on the forums before you get any OTA.

Oh i dont need to root my phone to update from the forums?
If you leave your phone how it is, on the stock ROM, eventually you should get a 2.3 OTA update.
But custom ROMs will be available here on the forums with 2.3 way before then. If you want one then you will have to root and S-OFF.

No. I pushed the G2's OTA from my sd card and I wasn't rooted. Like steviewevie said you're most likely to see a custom rom with the updates before any OTA hits a G2.

And if you have a Custom Sense ROM installed, you don`t get the
OTA Update or rather can`t install this!
Custom ROMs don`t like OTA keys, right?

That's right. But that shouldn't be a problem, because a custom ROM will almost certainly get a 2.3 update before any 2.3 OTA comes out.
Root it now, while you still have the chance!
You can count on the next OTA update taking away the emmc reset vulnerability exploited by wpthis.
So I have a stock rooted 2.2 evo. I have done nothing to it this time except use it for a hotspot. I understand that 2.3 is coming out in a couple of months and was wondering if I can OTA update to 2.3 while being rooted. I understand I will lose root I was just wondering if I could get the legitimate update. Thanks.

Yes u can but u might just want to flash the stock rooted rom once the official 2.3 rom drops. That way u keep root cause more than likely in 2.3 the exploit to root will be fixed and there is no telling how long it will take to find another exploit but then again this is xda and I'm sure it wont take long to root it

I wouldn't bother taking the actual OTA. It will be no different than flashing a stock rooted version prepared by one of the dev's here on XDA. That will still be real as it gets, and you won't lose root.
Also, sometimes it's been reported to be problematic to accept an OTA when you're rooted. The OTA may fail sometimes, depending on your hboot and radio versions. You're better off just flashing a rooted version. Or you could just unroot, accept the OTA, and then patiently wait for a new root exploit.
Also, in theory, if you've flashed unrevoked forever, you should always have S off, which then in theory you could just reflash recovery and go from there. However, I would not trust doing that, lol.
But if I flash the rom won't I have to download all of my apps again? I know I have to with cm7.
I would stay away from ota... the ota rom will beon xda probaly the same day

Yes. But that would be the least of.my concerns, considering there may not be a root exploit for.the OTA. You may end up losing your data if you took the ota anyways. You could.also just use titanium backup to backup your apps.

Will it? Some of my friends told me they can't receive OTA even with yakju version 4.0.1 is that affacted by rooting?
Shouldn't be, so long as you don't flash a stock rom - the OTA for the volume bug took the best part of a week to reach all handsets.
You'll loose root - the files will still be there but the permissions on them will be changed, to get root access back you'll need to rerun the chmod 06775 on su and Superuser.apk.
the same here...still on 4.0.1 with rooted stock - GSM free edition AT.
Can I rerun superboot r3 after applying the 4.0.2 OTA update?
A little explenation. As far as my knowlege goes..
You don't root the rom, its the phones bootloader that you overwrite so you so you can install custom recovery. With that you can overwrite the stock rom with a custom rom, kernel or radio.
So after rooting you are still on stock everything as long as you dont flash anything after that.
I read somewhere that some custom roms still received a update when on stock kernel.
You can always return to stock everything if you dont get the update or just flash a custom rom that is already uptodate.
Some say rooting and custom roms does affect the OTA updates and like you said others have got the updates so I think it's pretty hit and miss.
The only way to truly know is go back to stock and force an update and see if it works.
i have stock rooted backup rom. i cant install jb update. is it becoz of rooted?? if yes how can i unroot?
Good question, i also would like to know this. im in ICS ARHD
Rooted doesn't matter. As long as it's a stock ROM for your CID, all you need to do is flash the stock RECOVERY and kernel and you're good to go.
As far as i know you need to unroot it too, its a system change that will not allow to update ......
But you could try....then we all know it for sure

Actually root doesn't matter in the matter of getting OTAs. Updating through OTA will just remove root, and you can just root it again after that. Same method with ICS

Same like mine. Can not upgrade without unrooting.
you have to Relock, flash the official ICS version then use auto upgrade to JB.
I have tried to root again the official JB using same method for ICS then bricked my phone. now have to use a cooked rom instead bcoz can not downgrade ro stock ICS

Cool, maybe this one is different then. When i wanted to update from 4.03 to 4.04 i had to remove root, it wouldn't update untill i did that......strange
