Since opinions run rampant around these parts, I figured I'd ask for the hell of it. As for me, when I first made the progression to 2.2, I tried ViperROM but I didn't like some of the 2.2 features, so I switched back to 2.1. Eventually I came back to 2.2 and was running Syndicate ROM (pre Frozen) and was quit happy with it, then something randomly crashed and someone suggested that I try Bonsai instead. I made the switch (Syndicate 3.1 at the time) and it was wildly faster, and since then I've stayed with them up to 4.1. At the moment though, I've got a corrupted system again (due to my own screwing around), so I'm looking to start my phone from scratch and flash something again, so I wanted to see if anyone can suggest anything different...and why I should. Yes, I know I can just go try it myself, but I figured a poll and get the opinion of the collective could persuade me into which direction I should go, and as I said, why I should. I figure others have done the same as me where they went from one ROM to another, so what made you switch and/or stay with the one you're running now.
For me, battery life isn't a huge concern...I gave up on a phone lasting me more than 8hrs of steady use since the Treo days. I want a stupid fast and snappy ROM that has either lots of features or is stripped and easily upgraded to the features I want. I'm a texting and music streaming whore, constantly on messageboards and I want stability and speed within the OS itself, using BT, crashless when using apps like internet, games, etc. I forgot to put Bonsai on the list, but either way...throw your .02 at me.
Midnight zips around, and with the BYOR version has almost nothing on it...
I love that it gives you the option almost to customize every single aspect without adding too much bulk
They both have BOYR, but I had to edit it out to make it fit in the box...I have no idea what BOYR or Journaling does for me though compared to Bonsai that I'm running now.
Frozen is a really fast rom. I went back to stock ec05 for a couple days to bug test an issue I was having then went back to srf 1.1 again and it is the best. I hear their next release is going to be nothing short of AMAZING. EVEN BONSAI WON'T BE ABLE TO TOUCH IT WITHIN 500 YARDS. Well until acs does......... srf is the best

I've used both SFR and Bonsai and I have to say Bonsai, but by a little. Noticeable difference, but not incredible.

I somehow forgot to add it to the list, mostly because I was going off of active threads here and forgot that they've moved to their own website instead. I tried to edit the OP, but it wouldn't let me add Bonsai to the poll that I had created. I'm still running Bonsai (corrupted now) so I'm trying to get a feel if I should try something else and why.
I've never tried SRF as I made the switch to Bonsai right before Frozen came out, so maybe I should reconsider Syndicate again. I still don't completely agree w/ Bonsai's almost pretentious choice to leave a forum that enabled them to even to themselves on the map, but that's for a different thread that has already been created. Also, it seems Tmillar has enlisted the ACS team in an effort to get TV-Out working, and as far as I know, it'll only work on ACS's ROMs.
SFR is the best.

I'm admittedly DEV ignorant about how things work, but I was reading the blog about how Bonsai is being blocked by Sprint's network. Unless I'm completely missing something, I remember Syndicate ROM's mentioning something about taking all the Sprint tracking stuff out of it's custom ROM, so does that mean Bonzai still has the Sprint tracking stuff in it, and is that why they're able to block people from coming to your site via the phone?

No no no. I'm using Bonsai right now. I should have been more specific. I meant on the poll. But it's nice to hear you guys are busy on Bonsai.
For those replying, please vote in the poll as well.
For any Admin that might be reading this, is there a possibility to add Bonsai to the poll since I missed it.
Grassyass.
I just noticed that there are people who clicked more than one ROM, messing up the few results on the poll and the whole point of this thread. All these views, and only a handful of votes.
Don't listen to jbadboy he's always talked a lot of crap about bonsai for some reason. I guess he can do better himself. Lol. He can name it bad boys rom.

They are in the Development section, except for Bonsai, you can find that one in my signature below.
I'm using ACS SFR, with the genocide kernel.
It is quick. But still has some little qwerks that I've just given up on(most all related to the browser).
I would try Bonsai, But I don't want to get on to, and participate on another website/forum for just one dev/rom. I already have enough forums. But I am curious as to what happened to the other dev's; ie viper, nova, etc... and it seems like most the one available are based on acs sfr.
Speed ASC, stability Bonsai and battery life Midnight Rom.

I'm running Syndicate Frozen at the moment, but when I was on Syndicate (pre the current Frozen that is out now) and switched to Bonsai 3.1, Bonsai was far quicker at that time.
I'm getting around 1800's in Quadrant, so maybe after the next Bonsai update comes out, maybe I'll try it again.

Remember the kernel is clocked at 1ghz by default.
Everything has been perfect with this phone except now I've had two reboots in the past two days and I'm considering swapping it for a new handset (could be indicative of a larger problem). Yesterday it rebooted when I was browsing the internet, it had 70% battery before the reboot and then the phone was reporting 15% right after. I did a battery pull and it came up to 40% after. Weird. Anyone else have any issues like this?

At the time I posted this thread I was still waiting for a way to root my current ROM, with no flashing involved. With all the problems that people were having with LOS I didn't want to risk flashing a new kernel and potentially starting to get LOS when I never had it before. I still haven't had a single one and I got this phone on release day
Well, thanks to a FUBAR with the CIQ removal script and no backup, I moved away from stock. I'm now running Calkulin's and haven't had any LOS or random reboots. At least, that's what I'm running while I patiently wait for CM9. That being said, I recommend it.

Yeah I had the same FUBAR lol. I ended up using odin to go the EG31 route. I really feel no desire to go with a custom ROM. Back in the EVO days the stock ROM was always so bloated even with just Sense that you HAD to go custom to get any performance or decent battery life out of it. The stock ROM on our E4GTs just blazes and is damn near perfect already. The only thing left for me to do is get rid of CiQ and then it will be absolutely perfect. I have the odexed version of the noCiQ mod waiting to be flashed but I'm 1000 miles from home for the next few weeks and can't risk screwing up my phone. I only brought my macbook with me so using odin in case of a fowl up is not an option right now.

Oh I'm aware. I still do nandroids just in case now but honestly, stock ROM+removed bloat + autostarts is awesome.
I used to be flash happy when I had my EVO, I flashed new ROMs all the time (and always ended up back at MIUI). With my E4GT I just want it to work with no problems and I'm happy.
I'm stock too. I did the whole flash everything under the sun with my evolution and evo 3d and other phones. Ill root and flash when cm9 is stable. I had one radom reboot once but I think it was an app issue.

I have had my phone since launch, and have been rooting and installing ROM's for about 10 months.
I use specific ROMs as daily drivers, and am not the type to be flashing different ROMs every day just to see whats new - I pick one and stick with it.
For the last 8 months, whenever I install a ROM, I get about 10 weeks of use with it, and then my phone stops waking from sleep, and I have to pull the battery and boot to turn it on. I have tried reflashing the ROM, changing kernals, changing to a new ROM, and it still has the same problem. The only way to stop this happening has been to ODIN back to stock, and start from scratch.
This has happened with Epic Experience, Syndicate Frozen ROM 1.1 and 1.2, as well as Bonsai.
Each time, I get about 10 weeks of great use, and then the Sleep of Death (I have not actually timed it on a calendar, but my girlfriend will tell you every 2 and a half months my phone is "broken again").
I have read about some other SOD problems with development fixes, but haven't been able to find a cause (let alone a fix) in any of the Epic forums, specifically.
Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know what causes it, or how to fix it (either pro-actively or when it happens, without going back to stock first)?
My next step would be to potentially go back to stock and use the phone stock for 3 months to see if it happens, and if it does, take it to the Sprint store for a new unit, but I really don't want to deal with this phone stock for 3 months
Thanks in advance for any help.
I am starting to wonder if deodexed ROMs wear down after time. I rooted my ET4G and haven't flashed any ROMs on it because stock runs so great. I have my Nexus specifically to run custom ROMs. Maybe try rooted stock but the keyboard will not be good. Hopefully a solid Gingerbread release will use the phone's resources better

Run SetCPU and set scaling from 200 Mhz to 1000 Mhz. Eliminate the 100 Mhz step. Lots of phones get SOD at 100 Mhz on custom ROMs. I believe this problem is related to the random reboots on the Gingerbread leaks as well. We are experimenting with different voltages to cure it.

Thanks for the replies.
I have overclocked in the past and was sure to remove the 100Mhz step.
On my last iteration (on Bonsai rom), I avoided overclocking/undervolting because it had been problematic for me, but as I mentioned, the phone still went to crap 10 weeks later.
I currently have EH17 stock rom with root and may hang with this to see if I get any more longevity out of it.
I've got an Epic 4G that hasn't had any hardware issues in the past. It's been converted to CWM5 MTD, and the rom I've been using without any major problems for the past several months is RandomKing's ThunderHawk 5.1 version of 2.3.6, along with and FC09 modem and his custom ShadowKernel. Today, after shutting down my phone as usual, it froze on the charging screen that comes up when you plug in a power source. I waited and waited, but finally took out the battery. When I attempted to restart, everything seemed to happen in slow motion. After 10 minutes, when the unlock screen showed up for the rom, everything froze again. I booted into CWM recovery (took like 6 minutes), and even the response to button presses there are slow. I've cleared cache, dalvik, fixed permissions, and am in the process of (again, extremely slowly) clearing data/reinstalling ThunderHawk.
Unfortunately, I've not been able to Odin to stock FC09 yet because the download mirrors for the file are so slow and unreliable. What the heck happened, and what should I do?
Wipe data, and both caches, reflash the rom and you should be good....hopefully

Not sure what that is, but if it's on the SD card, it's been wiped several times. Also, removed. I've Odined (no issues) to EL30 stock, EC05 stock, and FC09 stock... but the problem persists.
I've spent at least 60 hours on this phone over the last two years of owning it... and not to mess around with it - just to get it working. I'm sick and tired of the ****ty support Samsung has provided, sick of having to flash custom roms just to get things like the keyboard to work correctly, and sick of it all freezing up whenever I need it most (even with stock). I had it replaced for a fee, and not much changed.
I will never buy straight-up Samsung again. Up for an upgrade in two weeks - anyone know anything I can't find on engadget about the Moto Photon Q 4G LTE on Sprint? Looks nice, but I want to know if anyone has anything to say that would dissuade me from getting that, and instead opting for a Galaxy Nexus (*sigh* at least it's got Google software support) or the EVO 4G LTE (ugly HTC One X version for Sprint).

It has a smaller battery than both, better processor than gnex, same as evo lte. Do you like any ui in particular? Sense, aosp, or Motorola's UI? Screen is HD on nexus and evo, less sub pixels on nexus due to pentile, and more real color on evo. Obviously the photon has a keyboard, is that incredibly important to you? Try em all at sprint and see what you think. Gnex will have best software support. Its all up to what you prioritize.

Ok so a little after midnight i rebooted my phone cuz it was being flaky.
Then it got stuck on the Cyanogen SGS boot screen from PAC 20.1 I tryed to ODIN cwm-5.0.2.7-epic4g.tar.md5. I got that to stick but every time i would flash a rom it would get stuck and end up and the samsung boot screen again. i tryed to flach cm9.1 and it hang at the BLM MTD part for a very long long time. then it went to the gray screen(the backgound of cwm 6) so that didn't work. So i tryed to ODIN stock EL30 EC05 just like hear http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052813
Well that ended with the phone booting up after about 40 minues. But i could not unlock the dam thing. So i did it again & left it for an hour & now its just siting there 12:19 on the clock but i cant unlock the phone. the sprint 4G boot aniy was/is all chopy and the sound cuts in and out. IDK i think my Epic is Epicing F(ced
(i'v been ODINing & reading xda all night:crying: )
Any ideas?
How about just going back to 100% stock FC09? Use re-partition, and you may even want to consider EFS clear (unless not on Sprint). Try that and let it run on that for a day. Note any issues that appear.
If no issues, then try to flash another rom.
Worst case scenario, your flash memory is on it's last leg and heading to become kaput. Flash memory only has so many reads & writes before it kicks the bucket. Constant flashing of roms over the lifetime of this phone diminishes the lifespan faster than a regular user.
A regular user wouldn't even come close to the read/write red zone for this flash memory, but a custom rom user/tester could (especially given the age of our phone).
Which is precisely why I find a somewhat stable ROM and stick with it for about 3 months, then i update/switch ROMs
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2
I typically only flash stable roms and stick with one for 4-8 months before doing a fresh Odin, re-root and new rom flash. I'm your normal user here; I stick with what I know works.
