[Q] Security issues with ROMs - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
Maybe a noob question. I have searched and searched without greater success... so please be kind.
I'm in need to do something about low RAM and lousy battery life. Thus flashing a cooked ROM is starting to surface.
However, how safe is this? I mean, I'll probably pick one of the well-known builders like LEEDroic or Ace's, but how would you rate the risks for spoofing, hacking or other malware incorporated in these builds?
I know just being connedted is a risk .- but this takes it one step further. I'm not paranoid, but I do have some sensitive data like Ewallet/Flexwallet with Credit Card info for reminders...
All you guys flashing - ROM's that is - do you have any sensitive data at all?
Many thanks.
Your humble noob

I stopped reading there. Seriously, if you have this kind of concerns, lock into your house, close the windows and never go out.

Lol Terepin, you are funny most of the time but you can't go trolling around every single nab on the board. Nhf.
This is a legitimate website. How do you know those apps you trusted your personal data are legitimate?

Hiya. I need some expert advice

Soo.... I have had android phones for about year. Now I have the epic and I love it a lot.., but I'm hearing about rooting and ROM'S and all this other stuff... What is it? And by doing these things will I damage my device.? I need to be clued in big time.
well before you get dinged for posting this let me try and give a link that may shed some light
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SPH-D700
Well... that guide on what everything was helped a little bit but it was all kinda confusing seeing as I'm new to the terms and whatnot. It basically sounds dangerous though and if I accidentally "brick" my phone I am going to die what are the positives of rooting my phone? And also, why would I get dinged fo posting this???
Cuz is posted 1000 times and u need to do your homework and start reading starting with 1click root is your best bet. And don't be afraid this phone is almost impossible to brick like I said almost and good luck.

Because technically this is supposed to be a developers board. They want you to learn the basics elsewhere and come here to develop new software.
And also we have people asking "what are root and roms" pretty much every other day. And then new people come and don't bother to read the threads that already answer their questions or use the search to find answers. Instead, they expect someone to start giving them the answers from scratch all over again.

If you can't afford to be without your phone for a day or can't afford to replace the phone if it becomes damaged, then do NOT mess with it.
Most circumstances all this is harmless/recoverable, but if the phone is a necessity (or not yours, ie parents), I wouldn't mess with it.
The only thing more annoying that seeing 50 post threads consisting of 48 people commenting on "wrong section" is threads from people that just messed up their parents phone and -now- it's an emergency.
Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798067
That should cover pretty much everything you need to know to get started and research stuff on your own.
Ummm thanks to everyone? I appreciate the advice and I'll try to figure this out. I'm just a newbie here (obviously) and I didn't know the ropes about how to find out "basic" info... Thanks for the links that were posted as well. Also, for the person who said something about this being my parents phone...? This is my phone.... and I paid a lot to get it and I don't want to damage it
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Ohh... and also I just believe I'm going to leave my phone as it is... I don't see the positive benefits of rooting it. Plus I don't want to damage anything
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
That's probably a good idea. You shouldn't make any major changes to your phone if you don't understand what you are changing.
Oh yeah, no benefits whatsoever
WHY SHOULD I ROOT MY PHONE?
Rooting offers several great things including, but certainly not limited to, access to hidden features, total customization, better battery life, and overclocking. It gives you control over the device that you paid money for in the first place. The devs here are great at finding features that the manufacturers left out or disabled and making them work.

Applications on rooted devices

Can an application I have purchased and downloaded for my SGII work in other phone or device? or do I have to buy it again to install it on the other device?
Thanks all; Just wondering and learning
If the app was purchased on Android Market you should have no problem redownloading it onto any future phone you buy and enter the same google account at initial setup that you used to purchase the app.
Do not post in the development section.

Yes all of the apps I have which have the paid versions are from Android Market; it happens i got also Mytouch 4G and thinking in getting a galaxy tablet besides my SGII phone and wondered if i rooted these devices if i would have to paid for the same apps to run on all three different devices or just downloaded individually to each and fire them away as i use one or other device.

You might want to check the thread that says "READ": http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1299957
Not to be a jerk-face... but stop making excuses. If you break a law , do you avoid any sort of punishment just because you are new?
Ignorance isn't a good excuse. Just apologize and do the right thing and start a thread in the appropriate place.
It's ridiculous the amount of people just tossing things out without taking a moment to stop and see what the deal is. Being new doesn't give you the right to just do what you want. If you are new, you should be even more careful... no? That's how people brick their phone--they don't take the time to read things carefully and that's what gets them in trouble.

[info] Basic Informations about HOX, sense and the universe

Hy community,
I once was a newbie on XDA (and still am ^^), but with the time I understood more and more things, now I want to give back and condensate the Information I got to answer questions I see often in multiple threads.
there are more and more questions about sense and roms and SOFF and if your phone can control your mind if you take an image of a brain as your wallpaper...
So here is the
officially unofficial "Question's you better not ask"
thread.
Feel free to add your 2 cents in the comments, I will try to keep this updated with your ideas
The goal of this thread is to inform the users, in order to avoid them asking those things and getting angry answers or blocking real dev work on threads.
Does this AOKP/CM9/AOSP Rom have sense ? :silly:
Click to collapse
No ! It's like if you were asking if Linux has windows in it, if a Ferrari has a Dacia in it...
Explanation : Sense is a framework, it's like wrapped over the android OS. AOKP/AOSP/CM9 based roms are free of this framework and based on the original google android source code.
In the same idea, a sense rom doesn't contain CM9, but you can make it look like with themes or a "de-sensing".
For this exact reason, you need to wipe your phone before installing a non-sense rom over a sense one (or the other side) (even if you should wipe when going from one rom to another, sense or not.
Does this AOKP/CM9/AOSP rom contain the sense cam
Click to collapse
No, It has to do with what is written in the first explanation.
Explanation : Most sense apps and widgets are linked to the sense framework, some more, some less, making it theoretically possible to port those apps to a fully sense framework free environement. However, the camera is solidely attached to the framework, it may be possible, but don't hope for it soon
Can I flash the boot.img from "rom A" on "rom B" ?

And still the answer is : NO ! you will end in a bootloop.
Explanation : The Boot.img contains many stuff like kernel, ramdisk... and this ramdisk is different for most of the rom's and a boot.img will only fully work with an adequate ramdisk.
However, you can repack the kernell with the zImage tool which is to be found in the forums.

It's obvious you've spend 'a lot' of time with the intro of this thread.
But all you write is old news as all is written already, 'instructions enough'.
To my opinion this thread won't help anybody because people who don't like to read won't read anyway,
so this thread is another clutter, nothing more to my opinion as it don't bring anything new.
Mods please close?
Thanks!

When I started on XDA I was searching for a recap like this, people not wanting to read throught hundreds of pages of a well-filled thread is not meaning they won't read a recapitulative thread...
Is a post trying to help others such a pain for you ? If this can help one person and avoid a single useless post on a single thread I will be more than happy.
I hope you can revise your judgment...
You just created a extra thread, nope I won't revise my statement.
Probably you have good intensions, but to my opinion this thread is clutter and a waist.

I agree. This is the strangest forum I've participated in on XDA. Here's some personality categories I’ve observed.
* Narcissist’s - in spite of a topic or point being posted multiple times in an already open thread, people feel that they're experiencing of an issue is somehow more important than anyone/everyone else's. They have no problem starting a new thread saying "I know this has been posted before, but..." Hint: before you post, ask yourself are you posting for the benefit of others or for yourself?
* Newbies with Attitudes - Not picking on this user in particular but this is an excellent example.
RADLOUNI said:
I am totally furious about the fact that HTC released an ICS phone with a GB kernel. Sorry if it sounds negative but this is plain deception, and disrespect to its base of customers. Other vendors without mentioning the name has released their phone with a decent ICS kernel.

Not only is it naive, it's wrong. Had it been posted as a question "what's the difference between the 2.X and 3.X kernel?" the poster would have realized s/he's uninformed. Hint: instead of coming out with both guns blazing, ask a question rather than making a statement if you're not sure about what you're talking about.
* Martyrs - Yes, the One X has launch issues. More than it should. They're all well known by now. Similar to the narcissists, the martyrs relish reiterating the same complaints amongst themselves in page after page in a thread. Hint: No one here can help you. Rather than ***** pointlessly figure out how to get your problem resolved. I'm not having any problems but it took me all of five minutes to find the two most senior HTC execs in Europe that oversee customer service so those with issues could have someone to write to and seek help. Hint: Don't just post "*****es," post potential remedies.
There are other personality categories unique to the One X forum but you get my point. I love my One X but sure wish it came with SGS3 forum.

A RUU is the full ROM installation utility from HTC, using it will fully reset your phone to the same state when you bought it (only thing it won't change is the fact your phone is locked/unlocked if I remember well), can't tell you what it wouldb be in Samsung-land ut probably samsungs Odin flashable base rom.
Hope I could help

Hopefully when this thread has 56 pages people still bother to find the time to have a search about the answers.
And remember if you just search the word >> 'RUU'...... (top right corner of XDA )
But your time and effort is much appriciated I ques.

[Q] T-Mobile Data Usage Check on Rooted S3?

OK, so I have a rooted S3 running the FrostyJB ROM. When I try using the USSD code to check my data usage (#932#), I get a message that my account is not set up for that feature. Also, both the TMO My Account app and the mytmobile website do not show my data usage, although they do show usage for minutes and text messages.
I ran into a TMO store, and they couldn't figure it out but said it may be due to root. Thoughts? I would like to be able to check my data usage, and every time I flash a ROM, it resets the data usage stats on the phone. Very annoying.

CCHEEL,
Don't let that get to you. In life there are, and we will meet MANY, ass4oles!
Just the tag of Moderator or Senior Member, seems to bring out the SH1TS in some people. There are some mods that have HUGE Signature tags and that in itself takes far more space than a small question, and they post nasties on other users in the forum, declaring why the post was moved, etc.. Some of them think they s4it ice cream and pi$$ Coca Cola.... Can't let it take the rest of us members of the forum down. Most of us recognize the childish a$$hole behavior and ignore them. They think they walk on water and talk to god. Hopefully they will either grow up or die away.... Hang in there and keep smiling. You made my day with your retort! (it was just about to the point as can be, without saying the word you wanted to say) LOL You know how it is,.... Hang a title on a piece of s4it and he thinks he's become God! Don't worry. Respect is EARNED and posts like what was done does in no way garner any respect.
Keep smiling, and the forum is for us all! You Me and any a$$hole that comes along, I guess.

If this is an emergency phone, and if everything works (no bugs), I highly recommend you don't mess with it. Keep it stock.
Keeping it stock is the best way to ensure that it will work appropriately in an emergency, which is the reason you purchased it.
You haven't been specific to what "everything works" means. Everything works just fine on the stock ROM. If you are having specific issues, name them, and maybe someone can advise you more properly.

So what exactly constitutes "bullsh_t"??? I would suggest you tread carefully before coming onto a forum and flinging around borderline insults to all the valuable information contained here. XDA us a wealth of information, for those patient enough to read and learn. Your comment makes you sound entitled, and too lazy to do that. In the end, this is just another n00b thread asking the cringe-worthy question "What is the best ROM?" Completely contrary to the whole point of XDA.

let me reiterate ... i hate the stock of it, so many things i just dont use and probably would never use either are loaded in the background - sense, car, dot thing ... yep ... nup!
i bought a case for it and wondered why it would keep blacking out the screen when id set it sideways watching a vid - background things that id never use - the dot thing!
rooting the device ... 165 apps being optimized? thats a lot of apps for stock! and people wonder why ther battery dont last but then a noob would never know
now what i mean by everything is - digging through thread after thread i read about sim card not being detected, camera not working, imei's going missing, and then theres this thing called s-on and it seems that i cant change that now without paying for it...

"Best ROM" is not a question that can be answered. You've already proven that point. Previous response suggested stock ROM. It's "best" for a lot of people. But it's not "best" for you. The "best" ROM is completely subjective. It is dependent on personal usage patters, preferences, etc. If you want a suggestion on a ROM, there are plenty of threads already discussing that.
XDA used to ban "best ROM" threads for the reason mentioned above. They now allow such threads. For no good reason, except pandering to lazy n00bs, and XDA jumped the shark on that note.
