Can anyone else confirm that the latest OTA update 4.53.651.1 is fully rootable with Revolutionary. It has been mentioned by one member (squidlymandingo) that it is fully rootable (flashes to S-OFF), but it is always better to have at least 2 confirmations.
The phone needs to be S-ON, and on Android 2.3.3 with stock Recovery to fully confirm that it works.
I previously ran Revolutionary on the 4.53 update myself, and it installed the Revolutionary patched Hboot 6.16 just like it was supposed to, however, the phone was already S-OFF from a previous unrevoked-forever flash. I also can confirm from other experiments that updating from 4.24 to 4.53 will break root, but leave an S-OFF phone S-OFF, with unrevoked-forever and Revolutionary.
If there are any other testers out there, the patched file can be downloaded from
http://www.mediafire.com/?bjxvuyc1mupcyzc
Change the name to update. Copy it to the root of your SD card. Boot into your bootloader, then go to your RECOVERY. At the triangle and exclamation point, hit volume up (not down) and the power button at the same time. Choose apply sdcard:update.zip (or whatever it says).
There is no Hboot flash in the update, so I do not expect that it will be patched so that the phone will not root, but hopefully some one else can confirm this, and do not need to experiment, so that accepting the next update will not affect those who plan to have root.
AND OF COURSE IF YOU'RE NOT A TESTER, THEN I DO NOT RECOMMEND ACCEPTING OTAS IF YOU WANT ROOT.

I haven't looked into the root as I already have root, though just looking at your 'instructions' I see a problem: when you talk about booting into recovery with the triangle and ! mark, to press up - I doubt that will work because I don't believe pressing up does anything to begin with, and you'd already need to have a recovery to run the update.zip. The triangle and ! mark is stock recovery, which is no recovery, and either cwm, amon_ra, or twrp recoveries need to be flashed; unless you can provide some documentation that says otherwise.

I don't have documentation in front of me, but without clockwork or Amon, stock has a hidden recovery. That's why it's volume up not down at the triangle. I've used it for manually installing OTAs.
I have an old stock recovery attached, if someone wants to install and then try the RECOVERY to see what I'm talking about with the volume up + power buttons at the triangle after going to RECOVERY. I don't have the latest one, but it works the same as the old one.
Well, if you get any takers, do let me know the result of it.

Well, after getting a lot of confirmations, 2, to confirm that the new OTA is rootable and after doing some careful experiments, I decided to give it a go. 4.53.651.1 is rootable the exact same way as 4.24, even with S-ON. So, no one has to worry if they are thinking about updating to the latest 4.53 software build. Also as I said before, updating from 4.24 S-OFF root to 4.53 will break the root, but will leave the phone S-OFF, so that it is easily rerooted. This was tested with both unrevoked-forever and Revolutionary.
I even managed to downgrade the Hboot twice from 6.16, back to 2.10 and then to 2.02, but it was tricky.
Updating and re rooting
I can confirm this works, well I think I went about it alittle differently. I nandroided back to my stock rom, downloaded the ota, installed without unrooting or flashing a different hboot. the update took, the phone was still s-off, all I had to do was use revolutionary to re flash cwm, once that was done. I reflashed superuser zip just in case and flashed amon ra. stock ota rooted and making a nandroid as we speak

I have been away a while and now it seems things are getting to where I need to start updating and finally going to 2.2.
(Search is down, so hoping this hasn't been asked before...)
Is there a list of all the Evo updates in order? I need this as I am on 1.47 and need to get all the way to...?? (Not even sure at moment as I have seen a 3.28 and 3.29 listed.) It seems you need to install the OTA's in order for some of the incremental ones to load.
Once I have all that then I will unrevoke forever or whatever that is. :^)
There's no reason to go through all that just to get current, especially if you plan on rooting. Just root it now, then flash this pc36img file. You'll be rooted and up to date. Whole process should take a half hour.
Thanks for working to be helpful...but what is that file? Flashing something blindly doesn't seem wise to me. :^)
Also, I am rooted on 1.47. Something is wrong and I cannot get the OTA to run. I am getting apply patch error that supposedly means something has been changed on phone but for life of me I do not know...as I am only supposed to have stock rooted 1.47.
So I need the info as I try to fix where I am now...then work my way up.
Don't worry about the errors. If you used unrevoked forever and have a custom recovery then you won't be able to accept OTAs.
That file is a complete update to the current OS version, with updated radios and hboot as well. It is prerooted so you will keep your root, and it will flash clockwork as your recovery so if you like Amon you'll have to reflash that when your done.
All you do is download it, rename it to PC36IMG.zip, put it on the root of your card and boot into the bootloader. It will recognize the file, load it (takes a few minutes) and then ask if you want to update. Choose yes and let it go. When it's done, you will be EXACTLY where you are trying to be.

That is the most up to date OS, and it is rooted?
ok so i got a g2, i permarooted thanks to rage/gfree now i have to send it in, i flashed back to stock rom, tried following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835971 to the letter, fastboot runs teh pc10img.zip with no complaints, i even installed the ota afterwards, but yet im still s-off and when i try to boot to recovery it gives me a phone and red triangle...
ive asked in the irc, granted this prolly isnt the best time of the day. im in no hurry as my new phone wont be here for a few days but still would rather have it done as quickly as possible.
TL: DR was on sense with s-off, need to be as factory as possible for returning to tmobile.com for keyboard issues
You're still S-OFF because that guide is an old one, and is based on the old S-OFF method of applying an engineering hboot We really need an updated guide to reflect gfree. I'm not sure that the editing of the misc partition is required now we're using gfree.
There's soon going to be an updated version of gfree to return you to S-ON. But basically you need to restore the radio configuration partition on your phone, which has been edited by gfree. gfree saves the original version of this on your SD card when you run it. See post #209 at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855764
I don't know why your stock recovery hasn't restored though, you might have to try flashing that manually on its own ?
Stock recovery you just need to press vol+ and power. Sounds like it flased fine.

I believe that is correctly back to stock then. The stock recovery will give you that screen, then you hit Vol + and Power to continue on to the stock recovery screen.
Clockwork Recovery got rid of that nonsense, but it looks like you got everything but the mmcblk07 partition back to stock. Use the backup created by gfree. It puts it on your sdcard, IIRC.
Hello there, I have DHD 2.2 stock HTC in with root. My phone is radio s-off and installed custom recovery.
Today I recived OTA update 2.3, I was told that having root phone prevent OTA update. However, I have it now and I don't know if I have to update or not.
Will I lose the root, s-off and custom recovery if I update?
Will I be able to root again and install custom recovery?
Having root prevents you from actually installing the Ota's. Since your stock rooted the phone will still notify you of updates(unless the Dev desables it). So if you would try to install it it would t work and most likely you'll get stuck screen with the exclamation point I believe.
If you want to update you will need to ruu up to 2.3, then you can reroot with gingerbreak. This method will erase everything so make sure to backup
Here's the link to the 2.3 ruu that you run from your computer. Thanks goes to andyharney for the link.

Thanx for explanation, but I believes using RUU will return the phone s-on and remove the custom recovery. Is this correct?
The ruu will keep you s-off. It will delete the recovery but after you root using gingerbreak, you can reinstall it through rom manager

Hi! I might jump into this thread because I have exactly the same situation (except I am not running a custom recovery) but I have a big issue.
The micro usb port on my DHD does not work anymore. I've put off getting it repaired as I have 4 spare batteries and 2 chargers, so I've been able to get by.
Can I still RUU, then Gingerbreak without using the micro usb port?
Cheers!
One other thing - I have the Australian DHD - I did not see a listing for an Australian RUU - Would I need to go find one or could I potentially use a WWE?
What about un-root my 2.2 using visonary then install 2.3 with OTA after that root it with gengerbrake? Is this good plan? Will this remove recovery and s-off?
@RaindancerAU:
Well, RUU needs the USB port. You could try copying a .zip file to the root of your sdcard, then go into Bootloader and update it through there.
(You can get the .zip file from the RUU by opening the RUU.exe file and press 'Next' untill you reach the 'Checking device' - or something like that - part. Then just press - 'Windows key + r' - type %temp% and search the folders for a .zip file called ROM.)
As for you other question. If your phone is branded to a specific carrier, then using the carrier-specific RUU is recommended. If your phone isnt branded, ... , WWE is fine!

Gingerbreak requires S-OFF. By OTA'ing' S-OFF will still remain, but recovery will be replaced with the originnal HTC recovery.
So if you had S-OFF before updating, then Gingerbreak will work, hopefully

I have a similar scenario.
my phone came with 2.2 and I used the advanced ace hack kit and it successfully rooted, s-off'ed and have the ace hack kit recovery.
When I checked for updates, I was surprised it did prompt me for the OTA 2.3 update.
I am tempted to install it but I am not sure if it will unroot my phone and remove the recovery and if it does, then how do I get it rooted again and have rom manager recovery?
I am with Three Australia and I was hoping someone else had done this before and would like to share their experience with us.
Since your rooted the Ota's will fail to Install. If you want to stay stock I would just flash a prerooted version.
Personally though you should give custom roms a try and enter the fun
I have used an Ice Cold Sandwich custom rom and I loved it on my old DHD but this new one which I got as a replacement came with Froyo and for some odd reason, the WiFi is not working correctly. It connects but nothing get sent or received. I'm not quite sure if its the aahk that caused or it was an issue since I got it as I don't recall using WiFi on it before running aahk on it.
So I was hoping I could install this ota and check if it gets fixed, otherwise I will take it back to 3 so they can have a look and it would look like I have done nothing to it.
Hope this makes sense.
I'm really worried about applying this ota. I have taken a backup but would I get the chance to restore it if the ota update fail to install as you are saying?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
You could restore, but the Ota's wont install at all. You'll get stuck on the screen with an exclamation point, and you'll need to pull the battery to reboot the phone.
What you could do is flash an ruu/pd98img of the stock rom to check the wifi issue. This way will get rid of root and cwr but its easily reattainable
I would not lose anything if I attempt it and fail? Just pull the battery out and I am back in business?
I will update to the latest ruu (Hutch AUS 3.12.861.2 PD9810000) from htc dev page but this will unroot the phone and remove cwr and put htc recovery. And then you want me to run the OTA update?
Just curious how easy it will be to root it and install cwr after I apply the ruu above.

First two questions correct. But their is really no point in attempting it unless out pure curiosity to see if fail.
If you flash the ruu, no need to apply the Ota's as the ruu is probably The Ota's its asking you to install.
Because you will still be soff even after the ruu, you could just install cwr via a pd98img. Then install a rom or backup. And even if you were son the hack kit would still be able to root your phone
I was as curious as a cat and you were spot on. It did fail.
The RUU I was referring to was from the htcdev page which is only 5.9MB and it's mainly to update hboot.
What I ended up doing last night was to apply this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843998 and the OTA still failed.
I guess it failed and when I checked, I still had cwr and hence why it failed.
I checked to see if I still had root and it was not. I was able to install superuser and this was all I needed to get root again. I did not think it was this easy.
I then ended up applying IceColdSandwich 4.0.0 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1450962
I am going tonight to apply 4.1.1 which only got released today.
I have a question about pd98img. what things can I install using this method? Can I packages apk files and name the file this and it will auto install when I hboot?
Pd98imgs are used to flash a radio, a recovery, and a bootsplash(image before you see the bootanimation)
You can have zips that install apps for you. Those are flashed in recovery. I know icecoldsandwich has a overlay script to do that aswell when flashing that rom. You would just have to place your apks in the specified folder.(I believe its data/app/apks)
If I am s off and my bootloader is the 2.10 version is there any way to get s on or to flash a new recovery or am I just screwed? Any help appreciated
What are you trying to do exactly? Why do you think you're screwed?
We're comin from a pure power source.
Somehow boot into recovery to turn s on I have no recovery becauseo accidentally did an OTA and upgraded the bootloader to 2.10 after I was already revoked forever
If you are S-Off, you're still Rooted (Well not really rooted, I think, but you can flash recovery and ROMS that have root)
And the 2.10 version is the Hboot you want, too.
The new locked one is 2.16.xx
Seems like you may be confused.
Yes but after the updated bootloader when I boot into recovery all have is a red arrow
Also superuser say I dont have root
As long as you're S-Off, you can flash recovery by putting the Amon Ra (Recommended) PC36IMG.zip on the root of your SD Card, boot up by holding power and volume down at the same time, then when it boots into Hboot, it does it's scan, finds PC36IMG.zip and asks if you want to update. Hit yes, then let it flash, then it will reboot to Hboot again.
It'll scan and find the image again and ask if you want to update again, and this time, hit no, then select recovery and you should be good to go.
Here's the link to Amon Ra: Amon Ra
Thanks I didnt know if that would work since superuser was saying I didn't have root
Realistically, you don't. S-Off isn't root. S-Off means the security is off so you can flash custom images onto your phone, starting with Recovery. Recovery gives you the ability to flash .zip files like ROMS, Mods, Themes, etc. Root is, if I have this correctly, in the ROM you flash.
I know on the Moment, it was in the kernel.
If you took the OTA, you're not rooted despite being nand unlocked (s-off). Flash the recovery of your choice, make a nandroid backup, wipe cache & dalvik cache, then flash the rooted version. However, you said you're on the older hboot, so maybe you didn't take the OTA?
(from... Evo/MIUI/Tapatalk)
The latest ota should have put you to hboot 2.16. Regardless, it doesn't turn you s on. You are still s off which means you are able to flash alternative recovery as previously mentioned. I was able to downgrade from 2.16 back to 2.10 after taking the ota. I was in the process of unrooting to get phone repaired. But I was only able to downgrade due to my security being set to s off. If I had run unrevoked s on tool prior to ota, then I would not have been able to downgrade and would have lost root permanently until a new exploit gets discovered. That is what I ultimately did. I am s on with latest hboot. Unrooted is not really good. Hehe.

I am stuck in Stock "Firmware Version 2.1-update 1" with Software Number 1.47.651.1 and even though I constantly check for OTA updates, the phone says that there are no updates for my phone.
Here is how I got here: I got my Evo 4G a few days after it came out. I was an early adopter of Unrevoked and Unrevoked Forever (S-Off). Things were great. Eventually, an OTA slipped by and forced my phone into a boot loop. I was able to use Clockwork to restore one of my backups and then avoid further OTA's.
I decided that I wanted to go stock, and get to the newest OTA. I used the RUU method to get my phone back to its stock rom. Then, the phone found two OTA updates. I thought that it probably had to update in several steps instead of jumping right to the latest update, so I just accepted the first two OTA's that it found. Unfortunately, the phone will not find any more updates and I am stuck with 2.1 (1.47.651.1).
I also noticed that when I boot into recovery, there is no "recovery" there. I see the word recovery, but when I select recovery it takes me to a red triangle with an exclamation point in the middle. I tried to download and install the 2.3.3 OTA Rom by renaming it to update.zip and putting it on my sd card, but I got some errors and it would not install.
I wonder if having S-Off has anything to do with the phone refusing to find the newest OTA updates? Or maybe I need a new radio? But if I reverted all the weay back to stock, wouldn't all of this been taken care of during the RUU method?
If anyone can help me get to the newest official version of Android, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks very much!
You need to install a recovery, I suggest amon-ra, then download a rom and flash it through recovery. Sounds like you just don't have a recovery installed
We're comin from a pure power source.
But am I unrooted now that I went back to stock with the RUU? If so, can I flash a recovery?
Thanks!
once u get to the little evo with the exclamation point, hit volume up and power at the same time. It takes u to a stock recovery. Or just flash a custom recovery as said above as a PC36IMG.zip flash a custom rom and viola! Or the other method u can do is take it to a sprint store and have THEM run the stock 2.2 RUU, get you to 2.3.3 and you should be able to update to the OFFICIAL AOS but of course as with anything stock, you run the risk of losing full root. But I doubt it because I just rooted a stock evo with the latest 4.54 OTA update just fine. hope this helps. Good luck with any way you choose to go.
Whether you are s-off or s-on doesn't matter to run the latest 4. 54 ruu. Download it and run it. U will then have latest software. Then if ur not s-off go to revolutionary.io and get s-off'ed
