Hello there, I have DHD 2.2 stock HTC in with root. My phone is radio s-off and installed custom recovery.
Today I recived OTA update 2.3, I was told that having root phone prevent OTA update. However, I have it now and I don't know if I have to update or not.
Will I lose the root, s-off and custom recovery if I update?
Will I be able to root again and install custom recovery?
Having root prevents you from actually installing the Ota's. Since your stock rooted the phone will still notify you of updates(unless the Dev desables it). So if you would try to install it it would t work and most likely you'll get stuck screen with the exclamation point I believe.
If you want to update you will need to ruu up to 2.3, then you can reroot with gingerbreak. This method will erase everything so make sure to backup
Here's the link to the 2.3 ruu that you run from your computer. Thanks goes to andyharney for the link.

Thanx for explanation, but I believes using RUU will return the phone s-on and remove the custom recovery. Is this correct?
The ruu will keep you s-off. It will delete the recovery but after you root using gingerbreak, you can reinstall it through rom manager

Hi! I might jump into this thread because I have exactly the same situation (except I am not running a custom recovery) but I have a big issue.
The micro usb port on my DHD does not work anymore. I've put off getting it repaired as I have 4 spare batteries and 2 chargers, so I've been able to get by.
Can I still RUU, then Gingerbreak without using the micro usb port?
Cheers!
One other thing - I have the Australian DHD - I did not see a listing for an Australian RUU - Would I need to go find one or could I potentially use a WWE?
What about un-root my 2.2 using visonary then install 2.3 with OTA after that root it with gengerbrake? Is this good plan? Will this remove recovery and s-off?
@RaindancerAU:
Well, RUU needs the USB port. You could try copying a .zip file to the root of your sdcard, then go into Bootloader and update it through there.
(You can get the .zip file from the RUU by opening the RUU.exe file and press 'Next' untill you reach the 'Checking device' - or something like that - part. Then just press - 'Windows key + r' - type %temp% and search the folders for a .zip file called ROM.)
As for you other question. If your phone is branded to a specific carrier, then using the carrier-specific RUU is recommended. If your phone isnt branded, ... , WWE is fine!

Gingerbreak requires S-OFF. By OTA'ing' S-OFF will still remain, but recovery will be replaced with the originnal HTC recovery.
So if you had S-OFF before updating, then Gingerbreak will work, hopefully

I have a similar scenario.
my phone came with 2.2 and I used the advanced ace hack kit and it successfully rooted, s-off'ed and have the ace hack kit recovery.
When I checked for updates, I was surprised it did prompt me for the OTA 2.3 update.
I am tempted to install it but I am not sure if it will unroot my phone and remove the recovery and if it does, then how do I get it rooted again and have rom manager recovery?
I am with Three Australia and I was hoping someone else had done this before and would like to share their experience with us.
Since your rooted the Ota's will fail to Install. If you want to stay stock I would just flash a prerooted version.
Personally though you should give custom roms a try and enter the fun
I have used an Ice Cold Sandwich custom rom and I loved it on my old DHD but this new one which I got as a replacement came with Froyo and for some odd reason, the WiFi is not working correctly. It connects but nothing get sent or received. I'm not quite sure if its the aahk that caused or it was an issue since I got it as I don't recall using WiFi on it before running aahk on it.
So I was hoping I could install this ota and check if it gets fixed, otherwise I will take it back to 3 so they can have a look and it would look like I have done nothing to it.
Hope this makes sense.
I'm really worried about applying this ota. I have taken a backup but would I get the chance to restore it if the ota update fail to install as you are saying?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
You could restore, but the Ota's wont install at all. You'll get stuck on the screen with an exclamation point, and you'll need to pull the battery to reboot the phone.
What you could do is flash an ruu/pd98img of the stock rom to check the wifi issue. This way will get rid of root and cwr but its easily reattainable
I would not lose anything if I attempt it and fail? Just pull the battery out and I am back in business?
I will update to the latest ruu (Hutch AUS 3.12.861.2 PD9810000) from htc dev page but this will unroot the phone and remove cwr and put htc recovery. And then you want me to run the OTA update?
Just curious how easy it will be to root it and install cwr after I apply the ruu above.

First two questions correct. But their is really no point in attempting it unless out pure curiosity to see if fail.
If you flash the ruu, no need to apply the Ota's as the ruu is probably The Ota's its asking you to install.
Because you will still be soff even after the ruu, you could just install cwr via a pd98img. Then install a rom or backup. And even if you were son the hack kit would still be able to root your phone
I was as curious as a cat and you were spot on. It did fail.
The RUU I was referring to was from the htcdev page which is only 5.9MB and it's mainly to update hboot.
What I ended up doing last night was to apply this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843998 and the OTA still failed.
I guess it failed and when I checked, I still had cwr and hence why it failed.
I checked to see if I still had root and it was not. I was able to install superuser and this was all I needed to get root again. I did not think it was this easy.
I then ended up applying IceColdSandwich 4.0.0 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1450962
I am going tonight to apply 4.1.1 which only got released today.
I have a question about pd98img. what things can I install using this method? Can I packages apk files and name the file this and it will auto install when I hboot?
Pd98imgs are used to flash a radio, a recovery, and a bootsplash(image before you see the bootanimation)
You can have zips that install apps for you. Those are flashed in recovery. I know icecoldsandwich has a overlay script to do that aswell when flashing that rom. You would just have to place your apks in the specified folder.(I believe its data/app/apks)

I have an unbranded T-Mobile Desire HD running 1.32 it has full root with S=off, CID is standard tmobile and the standard recovery – the rom is intact no apps have been removed.
I have downloaded the OTA 102 mb it verifies ok but on boot fails about 10% into the update. I guess it is verifying something before proceeding with the update. It fails with a red triangle centre screen with a red exclamation mark
Does anyone know why the update stops with a red warning triangle and I have to take the battery out to restart the phone.

Try deleting the OTA file from your sdcard and downloading it again, maybe it just didnt download properly, so some files are damaged.
@starfish. The ota won't work if your rooted. You have two options 1) ruu back to stock *no root* then apply the update but will be rootless 2) flash a rooted stock gingerbread Rom(my recommendation)

Just to save everyone some time - nope, re-downloading won't work. If you've rooted you're phone, HTC has taken a rather cavalier attitude towards installing this update.
Still taking a bash at it, but for now the only dependable methods of getting this to work is either downloading and flashing a stock RUU, or downloading and flashing a ROM that's already got the 2.3 update installed.
Please note that, in either of these scenarios, you won't have root access anymore. So far, trying to root via Visionary on 2.3 hasn't been successful - fails on temproot. Haven't tried manually rooting it yet.
Also as noted on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1084381
Be careful when reverting to factory default on 2.3 - there seems to be an option for clearing the SD Card as well.
I do have a couple of frozen apps - I'll unfreeze them and try again
but from what is said it seems that if I:
1 un-root 1.32 (using visionary) and leave s=off
2 then the update should install.
3 I can them use ginger-break to get root again and then perm root?

My error is the same as your yet I am root s-off
It seems that status 7 failures maybe a version mix issue - old nexus thread
Same as before. After you go through the steps and reboot, you will be at 2.3.2. Here is where things get interesting. It seems that you need another update. Its for people who get the “Status 7″ error.
This is mostly due to a firmware (those who have: GRH78C or GRH78). Here you will need to apply the LAST UPDATE, the same way you applied update1 and update2:
http://blog.vpetkov.net/2011/03/11/google-nexus-s-update-manually-to-2-3-1-2-3-2-and-2-3-3/
So I don't think this oto is gonna work

OK after some reading and with starfish's link, I think night falls under the mixed version issues some people had on the nexus. Some people were not able to jump directly to the newest update (2.3 to 2.3.4). They had to update in steps. From your post you are on build 1.32. I think you need to jump up to the 1.7x/1.8x/1.9x ota before going up to gingerbread.
But thanks to andyharney you can ruu up gingerbread.
Here's is his link to the gingerbread ruu. Just rename it and.flash through hboot. This way though will erase everything so make.sure to back up stuff

There is no need to flash the RUU if you're on stock firmware and rooted (running clockworkmod that is). With little modifications to the update zip it can be flashed without problems and root will pertain. I've done it myself 10 days ago. I'll write up the guide for you in an hour or so.

Thanks...... are these prerooted?
The RUU has to be run from a windows machine. Renaming it will not work.
I do however have the OTA file on my site now. You can find that HERE.
Not sure if you have to rename it to update.zip or leave it as it is, but you flash it in bootloader/recovery.
Hi Starfish I had the same problem had to unroot and get S-OFF to get the 2.3 update via OTA. Now obviously have 2.3 Gingerbread but with unrooted and S-ON.
Your best bet is to flash with 2.3 RUU as you have S-OFF and then use Ginger break to root so then you will have 2.3 that's S-OFF and rooted still.

Make sure you hve HTC sync installed on your PC and then run the exe. This will prompt you through the process.
This process will wipe the phone but not the SD. Your market app will install again once you have setup your gmail etc.
Theres a new OTA of course that includes gingerbread but I need to download 3.7 in order to get to that. That of course means I need to unroot and thats my problem. I cannot get rid of clockwork recovery and have tried all day to. (Havent showered). I have s-on and used unrevoked 3 to root. Please help me get rid of clockwok recovery.
Why not just flash a rooted version of the update there are a few good ones out and once you unroot it will be harder to root after the update.

If you don't ever want to root again, or if you don't mind waiting awhile, just run an RUU from your computer or flash a PC36IMG of the RUU through the bootloader. This will get rid of your recovery.
If you want to stay rooted, don't accept the update. If you can still get into recovery, flash unrevoked forever through recovery. Or just run unrevoked from your computer. Then download a stock rooted rom from here and flash that. Do a nandroid backup before flashing. Accepting the OTA while s-on will leave you without root until someone finds a new root method for the latest update.
(from... Evo/MIUI/Tapatalk)
I tried a PC36IMG and they sad they were invalid. I also tried an RUU and all it did was wipe my phone storage.
Hi Fellow xda.
I have flashed the official Gingerbread ota update ruu to my desire.
After that i realized that i couldnt root or go back to Oxygen rom, now that the hboot version is 1.02
Before i had hboot version 0.93 i think.
I have tried the downgrade to 2.1
and root again with unrevoked.
None of these 2 methods work.
Is there any other way to go back to rooted and custom recovery to oxygen rom or hboot 0.93?.
With oxygen and launcherpro my desire feels faster than stock sense
Anyone else have this problem?
There is currently no method of downgrading the hboot or rooting the official GB RUU.
I guess all you can do is wait until somebody figures a way to root and install custom recovery

Hmmmm...I did not know about this...
I did not flash the RUU directly but tried to flash the rooted or modified ones from this forum...and decided to keep InsertCoin 1.0.9
How did the devs root it then? Perhaps, try asking Baadnewz and/or NeoPhyTe for help, since they have released the rooted official update.
I don't think they rooted it as such, but more of "ported" it. I don't know a thing about rom development but go and ask him.

The difference is that when u run the ruu, it will overwrite ur hboot, ur recovery, ur rom, ecc, everything...So u lost root, because the ruu restore everything as stock.
In particular after run the ruu, the new hboot installed doesn't allow to root again and doesn't allow to change hboot at the moment.
Instead, when u flash the rooted rom based on official gb (u already have root and u don't lost it, simply), the zip contain only the rom part and with inside the super user apk (that allow root permission), so flashing it u will continue to have ur recovery, ur hboot, ur root permissions.
Instead when running the ruu, so u lost root, there is no way to install again a custom recovery and there is no way to push the super user apk into the rom (unrevoked / alpharev doesn't work)..At the moment.
From devs side, create a rooted rom is easy, as they extract from the ruu only the rom and make it rooted pushing in the zip that they are going to create the super user apk and some other tweaks to the kernel as well...All this can be done with the dsixda kitchen
I hope everything is clear now

Have the same problem as others here. Tried both apk and adb with GingerBreak. No luck
...but I'm trying to play around a bit and got a noob idea to use ARUWizard to flash custom rom. I've extracted RUU 2.29 and RUU 2.3.3 and replaced 2.3.3 rom.zip with the one from 2.29. It didn't work of course as newer version has been discovered but I was wondering if it's possible just to root the standard rom.zip and put it back. Is there any chance that it works?

HTC Desire (S-ON, HBOOT - 1.02, SLCD)
I am stuck in Stock "Firmware Version 2.1-update 1" with Software Number 1.47.651.1 and even though I constantly check for OTA updates, the phone says that there are no updates for my phone.
Here is how I got here: I got my Evo 4G a few days after it came out. I was an early adopter of Unrevoked and Unrevoked Forever (S-Off). Things were great. Eventually, an OTA slipped by and forced my phone into a boot loop. I was able to use Clockwork to restore one of my backups and then avoid further OTA's.
I decided that I wanted to go stock, and get to the newest OTA. I used the RUU method to get my phone back to its stock rom. Then, the phone found two OTA updates. I thought that it probably had to update in several steps instead of jumping right to the latest update, so I just accepted the first two OTA's that it found. Unfortunately, the phone will not find any more updates and I am stuck with 2.1 (1.47.651.1).
I also noticed that when I boot into recovery, there is no "recovery" there. I see the word recovery, but when I select recovery it takes me to a red triangle with an exclamation point in the middle. I tried to download and install the 2.3.3 OTA Rom by renaming it to update.zip and putting it on my sd card, but I got some errors and it would not install.
I wonder if having S-Off has anything to do with the phone refusing to find the newest OTA updates? Or maybe I need a new radio? But if I reverted all the weay back to stock, wouldn't all of this been taken care of during the RUU method?
If anyone can help me get to the newest official version of Android, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks very much!
You need to install a recovery, I suggest amon-ra, then download a rom and flash it through recovery. Sounds like you just don't have a recovery installed
We're comin from a pure power source.
But am I unrooted now that I went back to stock with the RUU? If so, can I flash a recovery?
Thanks!
once u get to the little evo with the exclamation point, hit volume up and power at the same time. It takes u to a stock recovery. Or just flash a custom recovery as said above as a PC36IMG.zip flash a custom rom and viola! Or the other method u can do is take it to a sprint store and have THEM run the stock 2.2 RUU, get you to 2.3.3 and you should be able to update to the OFFICIAL AOS but of course as with anything stock, you run the risk of losing full root. But I doubt it because I just rooted a stock evo with the latest 4.54 OTA update just fine. hope this helps. Good luck with any way you choose to go.

I will agree with this person. Sounds easier than my post lol google-foo will prove to be a useful tool young grasshoppa -_- (goooong) no racial slur intended ppl
Looks like tiredness has got the better of me and I screwed up my bootloader (I think).
I purchased a pre-rooted DHD, it was rooted through Advance Ace Hack Kit. I have 4ext installed as the recovery and have Ice cold sandwich flashed. I do have a nandroid backup of the rom.
Unfortunately I was running Advance Ace Hack Kit just to see what the options were as I was looking for installing an eng bootloader, unfortunately I selected option 1 by mistake and the software started running, phone rebooted a few times and now it's just stuck at the splash screen. I was in two minds to stop it mid-process but thought that might make things worse.
I also cannot access my 4ext recover, instead I get the red triangle and the htc recovery.
Damn, I'm annoyed with myself. I am tired and got momentarily distracted. I know one thing, if this can be fixed I won't be doing this again:crying:
Can this be brought back to life?
Ok, I have got myself out of this predicament by installing the stock wwe rom. Thankfully the phone rebooted, started up and the phone is back in business.
Of course I am still s-off, however I assume I am now unrooted.
Is there an easy option to root the device bearing in mind the phone is s-off? I want to root and flash cwm or 4ext.

Thanks.

In the "Ace Think Tank" thread (linked in my signature), post #7, there is a PDF that includes instructions on flashing a custom recovery from an S-OFF phone. Start from the bottom of page 9, the section labeled "S-OFF no custom recovery." After that, just flash a rooted ROM from the recovery.
Or, assuming you have a working ROM, you could look into SuperOneClick. I think it roots a ROM if the phone is S-OFF (however, I have never used it and can't speak to its reliability). Then you can just flash a recovery from an app like ROM Manager or 4ext Updater.
Finally, again assuming you have a working ROM, you could try flashing SuperSU from the zip here. Again, untested, but it has restored root on at least one occasion that I know of to an unrooted ROM.
Please note that I'm just throwing ideas around. If anyone knows that any of these methods doesn't work please say so.
Hello all,
Thanks for the replies.
I have the phone working, I installed the wwe htc sense rom that comes with 2.3.5 and sense 3.0. Pretty much my phone is factory reset, but at least it works now.
I lost root but do have s-off.
Use superoneclick. 2.3.3 it can easy root stock sense 3.0 when you are S-OFF which you are already.
1.First press temp root and wait for it to finish.
2.second root and wait for it to finish.
3.enjoy.
Got it sorted. I flashed a cwm recovery zip from an sdcard in bootloader. With cwm flashed, I could restore a nandroid backup. Back in business again.
If you want to unbrick your phone, you need to download an official RRU, or RUU or whatever it is that it is called. It is an EXE file that you download on your computer and run it. You can get it from HTC website, or google it. It's a stock setup of your phone. So you put the phone in red triangle mode, connect it to PC, and run the RRU file. It starts its magic and the phone will be back to stock with the sense and GB and everything. Use the Ace Hack Kit again to get it rooted and S-OFF if it isnt already and then install RoM as you want to.
