Hello!
Has anyone seen a disassembly guide / dismantlling guide for an xperia play? I have had a quick look and havent seen one. A video one would be really good and one that looks at the digitizer / glass would be best for me as I seem to have broken mine already, oops!

If you have Rogers they have a replacement policy. I would try that before you take it apart. Good luck. I haven't seen any guides yet. It is a pretty new phone.

I just ordered an OEM Xperia PLAY Black Housing Set from them and it's on its way. Funny how those "takedown" photos don't show you how they disconnected the sliding screen from the gamepad base. I got stuck at that part and have no idea how they were able to remove it. LOL
Rogers replacement policy doesn't give you the same model.... They have designated refurbished models available at no cost per person per life... You can only use it once... Unless the customer support was lying to me, that is what she told me.

Have you dealt with rogers before? The have no issue flatout lying to your face. I cant tell you how many times I got screwed over by those ****ers. So I get the feeling you'd be SOL

The only reason I switched over to Rogers was to get the Xperia PLAY for $99.99 on a 3 year agreement. I've been with Fido eversince and even though they're owned by Rogers now, I can say that Fido deals with their customers way better than Rogers does. When my 3 year agreement is done I'm going back with Fido. I already network unlocked my Xperia PLAY so if I still have it by then all I have to do is get a Fido SIM card.
Xperia Play disassembly pictures
Hey,
I am in the middle of taking apart my Xperia Play to replace the screen. Now, I got everything separated and taken apart except the screen half. I am having problem removing these silver rivets, which look like screws with a covering but the covering doesn't peel/come off. I have attached pictures of these in hopes that someone knows how to remove them.
Additionally, if anyone has experience replacing an Xperia Play screen, I'd love the advice.

Dont take the rivets OFF! If you just slide the control pad part off the metal casing you can get to the 2 screws you need to get to.
I have just finished replacing my screen and it is the scariest screen i have ever replaced as you need to go from back to front lol

I desperately hope that you did not get locked down to a 3 year agreement to just get this phone. As fun as this phone is (and likely to be used long past when I get another phone, just for Emulators and random games), it is not worth a 3 year contract. 2, I can understand. 1 would be more proper. 3 years is nuts in this industry. They have made back their offset of cost within 1.5 years usually.

Thanks for that video link, I think it'll really help other people who might need to do some repairs on their own to their Xperia PLAY. I just wish that I came across that video earlier when I had to disassemble mines, I was so nervous when I was doing it cause all I had to go by where those pictures posted earlier and it left out a whole lot that I had to figure out myself.

Two questions: How far can you go without breaking a warranty seal and how many internal water damage indicators / liquid sensors are there? I just need to check since they are threatening $300 if they find anything and I work in the cold and frequently see condensation. I do avoid condensation actively and don't even allow it in the bathroom when showering.

OK, I went as far as I dared by completely taking apart the bottom piece (gamepad, camera, microSD slot, SIM slot, headset/remote jack, primary and secondary microphone, antennas, speakers, microUSB, etc) and, so far, I have found three. It was pretty easy up to this point and I didn't notice any kind of warranty seal.
I just removed all T6 screws from the back and lifted the catches along the bottom (headset/microUSB) side using my fingernail. One corner should be loose and you can start there and slide with no marring (didn't need my plastic pry tool). I don't know why, exactly, but the internal L & R switches are stuck to black adhesive films covering openings in this black piece but I was able to lift and unstick them without touching the films. Anyway, when you remove and flip this piece over, you should see a white square just below the mSD and SIM card slot. It's actually visible through a pinhole on the other side. If it's pink/red, you've got a problem, even if it's caused by condensation (they will still void your warranty for "water damage"). When I touched it, a plastic film on the back slipped off but stuck back on. The whole thing seems like it peels off quite easily.
Anyway, I would wiggle the power button loose before moving on. Next, there are now two tiny cross-head screws that I used a PH00x50 driver on. Yes, one of them was clearly accessible as soon as you removed the battery, but why remove it until you are ready to remove both? Once those are out, let the headphone jack dangle off its ribbon cable and lift the PCB enough to disconnect the display connector from the PCB... just stick something wide and flat in there and twist. Be careful not to damage the tiny ribbon cable that connects the touchpad area from the gamepad because it still needs to be disconnected. Now, this is OPPOSITE of how many larger but similar connectors work, so pay attention: To disconnect it, locate the tiny darker-colored flap of plastic on the opposite side of the connector from where the cable goes in. Lift it from the opposite side toward the side where the cable inserts. It will stand straight up and then you can slide the cable out. If you have to remove it, the headphone/remote jack appears to work the same way.
Anyway, this should completely free the PCB and leave the gamepad shell attached to the display. The gamepad shell should be free from the front half of the phone now as well, leaving only the sliding metal mounting bracket.
Now, a couple of interesting things here: I can clearly tell that one of the T6 screws by the volume button was protruding too far and caused a visible sliding scratch on the underside of my top shell. It may make sense to loosen these a bit on a new phone before this happens. You can also see if imperfections in the white Teflon sliding bumps are causing scratches on the front (my first phone did not, my second did in no time).
Now, let's go back to the gamepad faceplate. The buttons should easily fall out if you want them too, but I was only interested in finding the water sensors and here are two more: one is right by the microphone hole and the other in diagonally opposite under the Playstation Certified logo. They look identical to the one on the back piece.
I'm sure that there is at least one in the LCD assembly as well, but mine is well sealed and I didn't want to lift any of those silvery-gray stickers covering the screws when I have a warranty replacement on the way. I've gone far enough to satisfy my curiosity.

A couple notes on re-assembly:
As expected, it's a bit more difficult, especially because you don't have leverage to reconnect the display when it is in place. The last fold of the cable it supposed to fit UNDER the metal bracket and the slide mechanism doesn't really work if it isn't (a certain panel will not slide back if it is not folded under). I'm not sure how it affects it but it does. You will need a thin, long, flat utensil like a plastic butter knife or something to either A) provide leverage to connect the connector or B) tuck the cable back under the bracket after connecting it. You need to have already connected the touchpads and oriented the gamepad faceplate around/under the bracket, though it will not be secured. The phone also needs to be in the open position. When you tuck the cable under, slide it to the closed position and back. If the cable seated properly, the PCB and gamepad faceplate should sit pretty flat and should no longer be falling off of the bracket even though it isn't really secured.
The D-pad needs to be arranged properly as well. One side is cut. If you look closely, there are three holes in the four inner corners that align with three plus-shaped pegs, so you can't get it wrong if you pay attention.
The power/lock button isn't going to stay in place until you secure the bottom housing, so leave it off until just before you are ready to do that to avoid losing it.
Be careful not to seal dust in the camera lens. Don't forget to put the cross-head screws back before you do the back housing because you can't easily access one. Remember to keep the four black screws by the L, R, and volume buttons a little loose if you had a problem with them scratching the other half of the phone.
Be sure to download the Xperia Play test program from the Google Market and verify that all buttons and touch inputs function properly.
I'll be sure to wear my Looxcie next time.

Maybe I've just taken apart too many laptops and gadgets before but I never felt that way when I got the back piece completely apart... or maybe "that point" is only after you get into the front assembly. I did the rear in bed with the screws laying on the covers beside me and didn't even lose the arrangement of a single one.
Anyway, moments after getting my RMA replacement shipped email notification this morning, I dropped my R800at that is supposed to be getting sent back and now the touch digitizer is shattered. I've ordered a replacement but I'm hoping that I'll be sending it back with the original from the RMA replacement. Does anyone know if the R800a or R800at will fit a R800 Z1i chassis? These are all over eBay. Also, is there any tamper seal? I understand that there are screws under the silver/gray stickers on the front piece but those look easy enough to reapply.
Did I mention that they wanted to turn my RMA down for the flaking paint on the front buttons alone? The night before I called to RMA for an alarm issue (two days ago), the battery door cracked right at the pry point. I remove it more often than most because I carry a second official battery and a Sony Ericsson EP900 charger, so it failed under normal wear-and-tear, but they wanted to say that I couldn't RMA for my main issue (alarm dismisses itself) because of that EVEN THOUGH THE RMA UNITS DON'T INCLUDE A BATTERY COVER!
Damn. Sony Ericsson can be picky. I babied the thing and only just now dropped it. Perhaps AT&T is a little too cautious with the terms of Sony's warranty (it is processed through them but the rules come from Sony).

I've always said this phone is cheaply made and now i have more proof
mine came brand new out of the box with a blemish on the screen
I'm not picky so i just kept it.
Its a blemish in the LCD screen not the digitizer or glass
and yeah the cheap ass plastic assembly is not helping either.
they should have used aluminum or something. more durable
OK, so I finished the job. I did not see any more water indicators in the top shell and I did not find a single tamper-resistant label in the entire device. I left the slider assembly intact (I think it's riveted) and I didn't peel the flex PCB out of the top shell or off of the touchoads, but it was what anyone would consider "fully disassembled." I seem to have misplaced my camera but video will be coming when I find and edit it.

I observed that there is a crack in the benzel of my sgs2. Benzel i mean The plastic lining that wraps around the front glass.
The crack is near the volume buttons.
How easy it is to replace this plastic strip ? Is it risky ?

Pretty sure you mean bezel, not benzel.
You would probably have to replace the entire housing which is quite risky to do in my opinion. If you don't know what you are doing you could short the board or break something.

I think the only way you can replace it is replacing the whole screen and touch panel.
After that one little crack and that mysterious burn mark right next to it (damn alcohol ) i finally decided to buy a case

Its not so bad. But there is an another minor crack on the exactly other side of the benzel where power button is present !
Is it because of overheat ? I use my phone while charging and battery temps are at 46 celcius when I do that.
I never dropped my phone.
If I go for a new benzel then will I have to pay for new screen too ? Is the benzel glued to the screen ?

Buying a case is not an option for me. I nvr dropped my phone. I use it very carefully , I love my sgs2.

You can probably have it replaced at an official Samsung repair center. I'm pretty sure they carry one or two sets -- or can order one for you -- but it'll probably set you back a little.

I am not sure about this. But looking at the screen replacement tutorial (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1253969) it seems like screen+touchpanel+bezel is a single part. I guess it is somehow glued together. But again, that is just a guess.

went to samsung service center.
They said they will replace the Glass panel, Pled screen and benzel.
Oh what the hell, I'll get a new Oled screen. Will go for SGS4 directly

yeah I noticed a crack on my bezel above the volume button. You can kind of see it on the enclosed picture.
I've got a crack in almost exactly the same place as the above pic, slightly closer to the top of the volume button.
Mine has been in an official flip case since day one and has never been dropped. I only noticed the crack when I looked after reading this thread (just like the plastic cover over the home button thread!).
I wouldn't have noticed the crack because of the case. So, is this a design fault? Is it heat or flex that is causing the crack?
The benzel is the most fragile part I think.
I must be because of heat. As the processor, gpu and antenna are near camera module. The top portion gets a lot hotter when accessing 3G.
On top of that if any pressure you put on it going to worsen it. Putting it in a tight jeans and then when u try to remove it out of pocket, u tend to grab the benzel a lot.
All in all, I would go for a metal/polycorbonate benzel in my next phone. That disqualifies SGS3.
Obviously I dont want to pay a hell lot of amount just to get a thin plastic strip (benzel) to be replaced.
Just because samsung did stupid move to glue them together and chose a cheap plastic for benzel I now have to pay a lot.
Waiting for HTC One XL(unibody) with S4 chipset. At least it would come for 3 yrs rather than breaking within 11 Months.
End of rant. Sh**ty cheap plastic Samsung.

Incredible! Saw this thread and wondered what the hell a 'benzel' was. After reading that it had happened to more people, I just checked my phone and it has the same crack.
Had never noticed this until now. Fortunately mine is a black phone, so not as noticeable as the white.

the phone isnt exactly broke though is it?? a part of the phone could have been designed better maybe but it isnt broke and doesnt stop he phone from working its also very hardly noticeable
ive had one sgs2 for around a year now and used it hard and it works great

Ok, so this isn't anything special...yet. But I do intend to see how much more I can find out over the weekend.
I decided I was gonna see what's under that back panel, so here are some pics, and what I did.
What you need:
-Patients
-Precision Screw Driver (Philips Head)
-Thin Guitar Pick
1st, Remove the top and bottom covers on the phone. This will expose 4 of the 5 screws you need to remove.
2nd, Peel up the bottom label. BE VERY CAREFUL AND VERY SLOW!!! This will expose the 5th screw to remove the back.
***This bottom label is designed to snap away from itself if removed too quickly. I don't know if this would void anything, so don't chance it.
3rd, Using a guitar pick on the HDMI PORT SIDE of the phone, carefully wedge open the seam down the side of the phone. Once this is done completely on that side, the backplate just kinda peels off, so to speak.
It appears as if there are a total of 6 water indicator stickers once the cover is removed.
NOTE: When you put the backplate back on, there is a single snap just above the camera that has to be secured before the top cover will go back on properly. BE CAREFUL, it looks like it can break easy.
Good tutorial. At least we have a tutorial on how to take apart the back of the ion. Hopefully there's future battery replacements that offer better battery life so we can use this method to change the batteries or other needed purposes.
Do you think it is possible to change the battery? It'll be great knowing that once this battery died I can buy a replacement.

UPDATE: This coming weekend, I will be taking this phone apart some more. Any warranty stickers I encounter, if any, will not be touched unless I can do so and still be able to reapply it. I will be taking pictures of everything I do, and will post them here. Stay tuned...

At Flash, my battery level is too low to result in dead phone, I tried to fix by simply removing the hardware but it's a big mistake, just flash the full charge the battery when everything is all right, no need to remove and reinsert the battery cable. sorry I do not have time yet capture
So I was having major trouble and decided to try and take the battery out. got one step further than tribalartgod, and took off the second plate by removing the torx screws (t5 fyi) and got nowhere after that. any who, Just thought I'd post the pic of whats next.
btw got the phone back up and running just had to charge a long time and reflash.
Did they have to have the top of the plastic connector open almost like a lid to pull out the ribbon? That's how most all of them are on the PSP. Maybe the same on the phone. Thanks for the pics.

Sorry, I didn't think to take any pictures of the plastic backing part. But, no I didn't have to remove any ribbons. Its just another plastic backing. I think there might have been some connectors but they were just contacts, no pins or plugs.
Oh and make sure the sim card and removable memory are out when you remove the plastic because they slide through the plastic into the slots. Its helpful to have a snap tool or guitar pick. I started from the bottom of the phone near the camera button and worked my way up and around. These snaps are harder to pop off too.

after looking at both of your brave pictures. i noticed a slot under the sticker on the right side, in tribalartgod's pics, where you can see contacts. also in Guregnack's pics the plastic is gone and contact points are exposed.
could these be test points for SETool unlocking?
i have the at&t ion an have no 'official' unlock method. have seen the paid test point method for alot of other xperia's. i got my ion for free so,why not pay to unlock it.

I actually just reflashed mine, myself. Sucks.
I notice in your photos there appear to be two more water indicator sticks. If they are, I say bravo to Sony... Placing those at various levels could tell them the extent of water damage. Pretty smart move if you ask me.

most likely its nfc antenna connectors ,
nfc tags are working only if i hold it just right next to camera
im having problem removing the bottom cover. it seems tightly secure; i dont really want to scratch anything lol.
I just took out the back cover and see in the little bit that's see through on top of the white sticker label (the rectangle see thorugh thing that is covered by some orange plastic) what is that? because mine looks like it's broken but it might be just like that abnyways... It doesn't look neat compared to the others and that it looks like it's burnt or something but I'M NOT SURE, cant see it properly

I had my new xperia play delivered yesterday, and while I'm really pleased with it overall, there's one thing that's slightly offputting. The right trigger button feels far looser than the left, and requires much more force to register when playing a game etc. It also seems to be sitting slightly higher up than the left.
Is there any way to adjust the 'tightness' of the trigger? It's not the end of the world obviously, but it is quite annoying for a new phone, particularly as it's a button that is going to be used regularly.
Apologies if this question has already been asked, but I couldn't find anything about it on the forum.
The screw on the inside adjacent to the button can influence it, but do not screw it too much because might will cause it to become lose. You will need a size T5 torque bit.

Do you mean the screw directly behind the trigger, underneath the battery cover? I thought that could be related, but the screw appears as if it is already as tightly screwed as possible?

I haven't look at it very much, but if you unscrew them all and pry the back off, you will be exposed to the entire mechanism and see if you can adjust it.

I think I'll try this, though I'm not really enthusiastic about taking the back off entirely. Would this invalidate my warranty?

Well in that case maybe you should get an exchange, but really they would hardly notice if you just unscrew it and put it back and its quite easy to do. If you bought it new and the factory sticker on the box was not removed, then it wouldn't be acceptable to have this issue. If you didn't have a factory sticker then its wasn't new.
Unfortunately this is not uncommon, my R trigger is *slightly* more sensitive than my L trigger, anyone playing on my phone would never notice it unless they were purposely looking for something to complain about. My suggestion to you is to hold down the R button and insert the edge of a trading card and run it thru gently taking any dust or dirt with it, then get a damp microfiber, take off the battery cover and wipe down the R button. I do this every couple of months to keep my triggers clean

It does have the factory sticker, but getting a replacement this early on is quite annoying. I think I'll try adjusting it, and if that has no effect, I'll get it replaced. Thanks for your help.

Many of us have the power button problem. Mine was so damaged that i literally had to hurt my finger to turn it on/off. I decided to replace it myself, as my warranty expired.
I'm sorry i said i would have made a video of it but i dont have a camera, so i can just help you with the steps i took.
First of all, i had to buy the replacement for the flex cable of the volume rocker+power button.
Here's what i bought http://www.ebay.it/itm/330846683561?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 wich is the cheapest i found (and it's original, exactly the same as the one already inside the phone).
Then, as i didn't have a kit to do it, i bought this http://www.ebay.it/itm/111091878763?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649, which is a very good kit.
I bought it for also other stuff but to fix our phone i only used the first 3 pieces from the left, the cross screwdriver, and the long piece on the top. The other pieces are not needed to fix the power button, so if you want you can just look for what i mentioned. But i can assure you that what i used is very important, without them you cant really take the screen out.
Ok! Once arrived, i started fixing it!
Unluckily i couldnt find on youtube a well made disassembly tutorial, but well, what i found was enough:

Watching these 2 videos, i understood how to take the antenna part off (which is not easy at all).
Ok, if you are also willing to fix your button on your own, here are some tips i can give you:
- The antenna part seems very fragile, so take your time, don't force it off if it resists.
Once you took the 6 screws off, you need to pull the piece off. Don't worry that plastic piesce doesn't have any cable, so you can take it off without worrying. Under it there's some glue and stuff, but force it a little and it will come off.
- In the 2 videos, as you can see, when he takes the antenna part off, you can see a part moving around. In my case, that didn't come off with the plastic piece, it had glue sticking it to the case. I unsticked it very carefully using the long piece of the kit. Be very careful there, do not pull it until it's all unsticked, because it is connected to the screen, and if you pull it you could either break the cable or the piece itself.
- once that is all unsticked, you need to take the screen off. Ok that was drammatic, not easy at all, it took me almost 30 minutes. After removing the screws under the camera plastic piece, you can start pushing as they do in the video. To help it coming out, i had to put the 2 aluminium pieces (the 2 identical ones) at the sides, between the screen and the case. Don't worry at pushing it in, i did it hard but my case didn't scratch or anything. You will see the screen coming up little by little, when you can, take it out with your hands (slowly! don't crack it!)
Oooook, when that part is done, you don't need the videos anymore.
I didn't take the battery out, you don't need to. Remove the black plastic piece covering the camera, it has only 3 screws.
Once that's done, on the left side of the screen, you will see the flex cable we need to replace. It has some glue but don't worry, take it off, that's broken anyway while taking it off, be careful not to break the cable inside the connector, because the space is tight and i guess it would be hard pulling it out.
Ok! Once done, take your new flew cable, and put it in the connector, then take the adhesive off and put the parts where they were before, There are some little holes in it to guide you when replacing it.
Once done, before re assembling the phone, try the power button and volume as well. (that's why i didn't remove the battery). If it works, you can now re assemble your phone. So put the black plastic piece on the camera again, next you have to reinsert the screen in the case. I suggest you start by the side of the volume rocker, and then push the rest inside.
Now, you need to reasseble the antenna part. Before doing that, be sure tto re-stick the moving part to the case, in the exact position as before, otherwise when you put back the antenna cover you'll se it wont close well. (That took me quite a while, it's not easy at it seems).
Put the screws back int and boom! You are done
Your power button now works!!!!!
Sorry again for not taking a video, or photos, but well, as i did it, you can do it too.

Hardware repair is recommended but for those who aren't family with it and your device is rooted. I've a software solution fixed this problem completely, read my post #24 about Quickboot + Screen Off and Lock + android.policy.jar

Mine's broken too, but we went to someone to get it fixed (with just he glass that we had ordered off of ebay) and we were told that the digitizer was attatched to the LCD, and there were chances of touch not working.
