Hey guys :victory:
Many of us have the power button problem. Mine was so damaged that i literally had to hurt my finger to turn it on/off. I decided to replace it myself, as my warranty expired.
I'm sorry i said i would have made a video of it but i dont have a camera, so i can just help you with the steps i took.
First of all, i had to buy the replacement for the flex cable of the volume rocker+power button.
Here's what i bought http://www.ebay.it/itm/330846683561?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 wich is the cheapest i found (and it's original, exactly the same as the one already inside the phone).
Then, as i didn't have a kit to do it, i bought this http://www.ebay.it/itm/111091878763?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649, which is a very good kit.
I bought it for also other stuff but to fix our phone i only used the first 3 pieces from the left, the cross screwdriver, and the long piece on the top. The other pieces are not needed to fix the power button, so if you want you can just look for what i mentioned. But i can assure you that what i used is very important, without them you cant really take the screen out.
Ok! Once arrived, i started fixing it!
Unluckily i couldnt find on youtube a well made disassembly tutorial, but well, what i found was enough:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXft7kDwUL8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w96ldQq5Q2k
Watching these 2 videos, i understood how to take the antenna part off (which is not easy at all).
Ok, if you are also willing to fix your button on your own, here are some tips i can give you:
- The antenna part seems very fragile, so take your time, don't force it off if it resists.
Once you took the 6 screws off, you need to pull the piece off. Don't worry that plastic piesce doesn't have any cable, so you can take it off without worrying. Under it there's some glue and stuff, but force it a little and it will come off.
- In the 2 videos, as you can see, when he takes the antenna part off, you can see a part moving around. In my case, that didn't come off with the plastic piece, it had glue sticking it to the case. I unsticked it very carefully using the long piece of the kit. Be very careful there, do not pull it until it's all unsticked, because it is connected to the screen, and if you pull it you could either break the cable or the piece itself.
- once that is all unsticked, you need to take the screen off. Ok that was drammatic, not easy at all, it took me almost 30 minutes. After removing the screws under the camera plastic piece, you can start pushing as they do in the video. To help it coming out, i had to put the 2 aluminium pieces (the 2 identical ones) at the sides, between the screen and the case. Don't worry at pushing it in, i did it hard but my case didn't scratch or anything. You will see the screen coming up little by little, when you can, take it out with your hands (slowly! don't crack it!)
Oooook, when that part is done, you don't need the videos anymore.
I didn't take the battery out, you don't need to. Remove the black plastic piece covering the camera, it has only 3 screws.
Once that's done, on the left side of the screen, you will see the flex cable we need to replace. It has some glue but don't worry, take it off, that's broken anyway while taking it off, be careful not to break the cable inside the connector, because the space is tight and i guess it would be hard pulling it out.
Ok! Once done, take your new flew cable, and put it in the connector, then take the adhesive off and put the parts where they were before, There are some little holes in it to guide you when replacing it.
Once done, before re assembling the phone, try the power button and volume as well. (that's why i didn't remove the battery). If it works, you can now re assemble your phone. So put the black plastic piece on the camera again, next you have to reinsert the screen in the case. I suggest you start by the side of the volume rocker, and then push the rest inside.
Now, you need to reasseble the antenna part. Before doing that, be sure tto re-stick the moving part to the case, in the exact position as before, otherwise when you put back the antenna cover you'll se it wont close well. (That took me quite a while, it's not easy at it seems).
Put the screws back int and boom! You are done
Your power button now works!!!!!
Sorry again for not taking a video, or photos, but well, as i did it, you can do it too.
I hope you can all understand the guide!
Bye bye

Hardware repair is recommended but for those who aren't family with it and your device is rooted. I've a software solution fixed this problem completely, read my post #24 about Quickboot + Screen Off and Lock + android.policy.jar
WOW didn't know this was even possible way to go man. Amazing. I'd never have dared it.
This was really interesting and I'm looking to try it soon

Mine's broken too, but we went to someone to get it fixed (with just he glass that we had ordered off of ebay) and we were told that the digitizer was attatched to the LCD, and there were chances of touch not working.
Yeah I noticed that :/

Hi guys, I got my hands on a MT4G with a broken LCD.
First Q, is it worthy getting a replacement off cheapbay? What other options are there?
Second Q, is it hard to replace it? Is it possible to do it myself?
Thanks for your advise...
I haven't replaced an LCD myself but I am looking to replace a digitizer for my wife's phone.
Someone posted up this link for me in another thread I started.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/FULL-LCD-DI...984?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a12834fe0
This should take out the hard part of disassembling the digitizer from the lcd and reattaching and the adhesive itself.
It's the complete the front housing, digitizer AND LCD in one. Already assembled.
I haven't ordered it myself yet but I AM tempted. Especially after watching some of these disassembling videos.
Let me know what you decide and how it worked out.
Just PM me.
Thanks bro and good luck.
Thanks a lot, I will check it out, the adhesive part really has me in doubt.
I've replaced the LCD without the digitizer attached and you are both correct. It can be done but the finished product is not factory quality. I looked at the ebay part posted in the link and that would be the way to do it. Otherwise you have to use a hair dryer to heat the glue and its not fun.
If you are not familiar with taking electronics apart look for a video tutorial via google; I used one to take the MT4G apart. Also label the screws as they come out by drawing the phone on a piece of paper and placing the screw accordingly on the paper. Makes assembly much easier!
Hope you take on the challenge and good luck.

Yeah my only thing about ordering this complete assembly is that my wife's phone has the SO screen and I don't want to replace with an SH, which I'm sure that part is going to be. (99.99% sure)
Add to that, she doesn't even need a new LCD and the digitizer alone is just 25 bucks.
Decisions, decisions.

I have to clean the dirt out between my digitizer and lcd! Can't tell you how annoying that is. Suppose someone could do a better job resealing it... It would be nice if a digitizer/lcd kit came with new adhesive.

I saw lcd screen and touch screen digitizer for HTC mytouch 4G there.
I've been taking electronics apart since I was 7 tears old. The MyTouch 4g finally beat me.
There are a lot of really delicate connectors that break easily. Be careful

You'd better to buy non-working phone (maybe from ebay) and make one from two phones. You should have the screwdriver. Easy to replace.
It is not really hard i saw a vid on youtube just search it up super easy actually
I bought a digitizer LCD already together for like 75 and it wasn't too bad to exchange and put this new one in but when I powered the phone the bottom left of the screen didn't work and it impossible to take it back out of the silver bezel without breaking it so I sent it back to get my money and lost the bezel. Its not too hard but be careful take your time and don't pull or yank anything.

I replaced my digitizer. I agree, there are many delicate connectors, but nothing to be afraid of. You should watch the YouTube video over and over. Also, be careful not to push on the bottom buttons while taking it apart. This was the most frustrating thing because they wouldn't sit properly when reassembled. I took it apart 5 times before I forgot to detach the power ribbon and ripped it off! There are motherboards available to fix this, but saving it for another day.

That's funny that's the same exact thing I did pulled the power ribbon right out so I just said screw it and just bought a new phone on eBay

Hi, has anyone replaced their digitizer on their desire z/g2? How did it go? It looks easy on the youtube vid.. have any problems? What way did you use to melt the glue? What digitizer did you use, where from?
Any info much appriciated as will be replaceing mine v soon due to 'invisible finger problem' that's driving me nuts..
Thanks..

Never done it on a g2 but should be pretty straight forward especially with a video lol. Use a heat gun to melt the glue, pretty much the only tool you SHOULD use to do something like that.
I replaced the digitizer on my third G2 after getting a refurb replacement from T-Mobile that had a black spot inside the actual digitizer glass, not on the outside or inside.
The process is very easy with the video, however, trying to keep dust and fingerprints from getting on the inside of the phone while you're trying to get it back together is a serious pain in the rear! If it's the same video that I watched, just use a hair drier blowing hot air to heat the adhesive on the inside of the digitizer and then pop the digitizer off very very slowly, because you don't want to accidentally bend the metal bezel around the screen.
You also may want to leave the original leftover adhesive on the inside, because when I cleaned mine off, light now always leaks out around the bottom edge of the digitizer, below the menu, home, and search buttons, even though I used the double sided adhesive strips covering the entire length of the bottom, so light shouldn't technically be leaking out. No biggie, though... it works like brand new, now!
Thanks for the reply.. I have seen that video and that's what I was using as a guide.. I ordered the digi today, should be here tomorrow.. the only thing I was wondering was the glueing process, as I have not ordered the double sided glue/tape stuff, as I was just hopeing to still use the original glue as I think you are saying.. I hope that works! Have to be careful like u say with dust/fingerprints etc..
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Hmm, after reading your post again, maybee I should of bought the double sided tape afterall? Do you think the old leftover glue is enough for the new digi?
Many thanks..
Sent from my HTC Vision usingall XDA App
Run over to radio shack they must have some kind of glue you can use lol. google cell phone screen glue see what info you can find.
Ok, just incase anyone is interested, got my new digitizer, followed the video, used a heat gun cerfully to melt the glue, pulled the old digitizer out, and used the original glue whilst still warm to hold the new digi in, as all of glue stayed on the case rather than on the digi, which was pretty lucky.. put it all back together and everything perfect, touchscreen back to how it should be.. cost me 17 pounds.

How was this accompilshed?
I replaced the touch screen as well and the problem persists. Plus I never ran into a part that required a heat gun did I use the wrong item?
A VERY confusing part is getting the midframe to hold to the hinge mounts. The side (black dots all down it) should overlap the stabilizer bar on the hinge. I fidgeted with it for hours until realizing it goes over, and inadvertently damaged the highly sensitive LCD screen, which resulted in me taking the whole thing apart again to replace the LCD and digitizer. UGH!
DO NOT get the cheapo digitizer on Amazon, look for one with gray spots where the menu, home, back and search keys are on the back side. The digitizers without them will not work when you swap over the white button caps on the back. I feel like this information is vital to anyone who is replacing their G2 digitizer, but most guides and videos make no mention of it.
I used a lamp to heat up the glass to remove it the first time. Took too long the second time so I used a hair dryer.

Hi, I did buy mine from amazon.co.uk, there were a few for sale,, the one I bought was supposed to be a genuine t-mobile g2 replacement (refurb I think, pressumably this just means that it was from a second hand g2 that had problems and the digi was taken out - and I'm pretty certain this is the case as mine has a thin film (which u leave on) over the back of the digi covering the tracks etc, which had a few very small air/dust bubbles under it (just noticeable when screen off), where I own a desire z, so now it sais t-mobile instead of htc, but I can live with that.
The small grey bits that you talk about were floating about or stuck on my digi when I pulled it off the main chassis. I had a look, and as far as I could work out, were possibly just for giving colour to the tiny led's that give you light to the home/search keys etc (I may be wrong on their use), but if you look closely, the tiny grey things have even smaller rectangles on them that relate to the positions of the led's on the circuit board. So I picked the remaining ones off the old digi, put them back in their correct holes and stuck the new digi in. I've had no problems (with a digi from amazon with no little grey things on it) so far, but maybee this is due to mine being a second hand original part..
Edit : Now after reading your post again, you're talking about bits that are actually on the digi itself, not the white caps that I'm talking about! Whoops. I didn't notice any grey spots on the digi itself, but I guess I must have them..

actually it says HTC on it and looks a lil bit differently than on the picture.
never the less, i replaced it really carefully and checked every connecting.
But somehow the Touchscreen doesn't work at all.
Can anyone help me ? what could be the problem ?
Wrong digitzer ?
is it okay, that the digitizer has direct contact to the frame where it is glued to ?

Hi!
I have the same problem, I have asked it already here
So you had invisible finger press in the screen, and the screen was bad responsive?
...Just to make sure my problem is digitizer problem! The service wont change it in warranty unless the problem is there all the time! But its driving me crazy! why is it happening randomly, why isnt it all the time? How could i make the screen to do this problem when i'm at the service?
Well, I kind of play in sand soccer with my phone in a pocket, and now dust it's all over inside. That's actually it's not what I care, because I already have a bit in the screen. I think is broking something inside because sometimes when I open or close the screen goes divided and up-down, left-righted. The thing is that I cannot send it to any USA services, so I have to do it on my own, I'm from Venezuela.
How to do it without breaking something else?
I have something like "electronic contact cleaner" but I saw what does that to plastic, and I don't want to take the risk.
The ribbon is damaged.

I don't understand.
I open the phone, the half of the keyboard, and I clean the flex, but I can notice that it is like stained in some parts.
I couldn't open the half of the screen. How I can do it?
I think of buying the flex and mount it myselft, but it have any welding?
The screen half is held in place by 4 screws hidden under 2 black adhesives on top and bottom, at the back of screen half. These adhesives are like the back (with the dots), but you can lift them with a sharp knife and some care.
And no, you don´t need any welding to replace the flex cable. Just study the interior with care and you´ll find out how to completely dismantle the phone, and clear everything. I bought mine used and I did a full cleaning on it, it looks like new now.
Thanks! I'll give it a try. Don't you have any pics? I did see all that you told, but I couldn't pass trough that. .
There is a thread in this section that has a lot of pics showing how to take the phone apart

yes, there are a couple out there that walk you through the disassembly step by step. Small phillips and t-5 torx needed.

I've red this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1304940 but I'm not sure if that's working with the desire

another solution could be spraying insinde this??

im not sure but there is probably a guide to cleaning buttons somewhere on xda r youtube etc etc. personaly i would NOT use wd40 on my phone as it probably would do more damage, i mean i use wd40 on my car engine. it looks like a hardware issue so i would try cleaning around the buttons etc, following a good guide

There's a video on youtube how to disassemble the Desire. It's on German, but you see what you have to do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWkTYvSk9Ys
I'd recommend to open the device and look if you can repair something from within.
I had this and it was pretty easy to fix.
Dissemble your phone until you can access the volume buttons, carefully peal back the black plastic that surrounds them and then clean the silver domes and contacts with isopropyl alcohol or similar on a q-tip. If the domes are cracked or split then you'll ideally need to replace them. Once everything is clean and dry, reapply the tape and reassemble.
This made mine more reliable and easy to press than when I first got the phone!

how do I disassemble it?
last time I disassembled a phone all the dust got under the screen and it was worse than the worst awful phone...
It's pretty simple and you should be able to find a few guides on google.
As for dust under your screen, iirc you shouldn't need to remove the lcd from the phone to do this so it's a non issue.
http://www.formymobile.co.uk/desiredisassembly.php seems good enough for this, stop when you can (carefully) flip out the buttons or if you want easier access, when the pcb/circuit board is out. In terms of phones to take apart the desire is very easy
Hey guys, I hope someone can help!
My phone no longer vibrates, if I do *#*#3424#*#* and do the vibration test, it doesn't do anything unless I tap the top right corner of the phone.
Obviously this is a hardware defect, but if I send it off to repair through carphone warehouse, should I take the phone back to stock? Has anyone has experience of using them and being rooted causing an issue?
Thanks guys!
I had the same issue. I had to open up the phone to fix it, but didn't need to do much more than actually opening it.
Bear in mind this will void your warranty.
Here's what I did:
Turn off the phone.
Remove the SIM and SD card trays.
Take a guitar pick or thin plastic object and gently (but with a small amount of pressure), pry up the black plastic piece on the top of the phone, it's held down with some adhesive, so you might need to peel it a bit.
You will find two size 4 torx screws under there, one on each side, recessed into the housing. Remove them.
Now use your plastic implement to start peeling off the back of the case. It works best if you dig it into the seam, then once you have it in there, run it around the edge to release the clips holding the case together.
Once the back is off, you will find the vibration module in the upper right of the circuitry you find inside, it's a small black cylinder with a silver head on it.
It's held in place with rubber bumpers on either side. Take your plastic implement and gently lift it from its housing.
Now rotate the head a few times between your fingers to loosen it up, also giving the head a very gentle push and pull - VERY GENTLE.
Now put the vibration unit carefully back into its housing.
Clip the rear casing of the phone back on. This can very tricky to get all the clips to snap back into place. Don't do what I did and use pliers. My phone now has a small dent in it. Whoops!
Once the rear casing is back in place, replace the two screws in the top of the phone, followed by the black plastic piece you removed at the beginning.
Power the phone back on, and with a bit of luck, your vibration unit will be unstuck and working again.
I sent it in for warranty repair... Hopefully they don't care it's rooted!
Thanks for this though, very useful if/when it happens again
my vibration was not working also, even in the service menu to test vibration. had all the work to go back to stock to send it do warranty, but the format to stock was enough for him to start vibrating again...
Who the hell knows!
Don't worry- List of answers found Vibrate not work

It took about a week to get there, then a few days sat around at their place, then they sent me a new one. So around 2 weeks.
But it wasn't over the Xmas period!
It also depends what Vodafone do with it, they might send it off to HTC direct. I have had bad experiences of them before with my desire HD. They basically lost the phone and took 3 months to replace it. "We've just moved warehouses so it'll take a bit longer than normal" was the constant line I had from them!

So strange because I've just noticed my vibrate has stopped working too. Tried running the diagnostic test and it doesn't work. The really bizarre part to me is that if you restart/power on the phone, it has a quick vibration buzz so that must imply my motor isn't broken but it's the software causing an issue. I'm running ARHD 14, but MIke's about to release the new Android M update so when that's out, I'll clean wipe and report if it's fixed

I've noticed banging the top of your phone agaisnt a hard surface provides a temporary fix (please don't do this and damage your device. I'm not responsible enough) it actually fixed my issue for a minute. Hopefully with enough banging I won't have to open the device up to fix it
