I accidentally jumped into the water with my desire in my pocket.. I realized it soon so it was underwater just for a few seconds.. It turned itself off straight away.. I quickly took out battery, sim and sd card and let it dry up for about 40 hours. Now I tried to put it together and turn it on but nothing has happened, it seemed dead.. Then I tried to charge the phone, and it managed to turn on right after I plugged it in. Fortunately everything seems to work so far but one thing.. As soon as I unplug it from the charger, it turns off.. The battery is almost fully charged so I suspect I'll need a new one.. Is there something that can be done to save this battery?
btw, it was a normal lake outside, not see or thermal water..

HTC Desire with water

First thing you should not do, would be to charge your HTC,
as it was full of water inside and therefore you can damage
main board, the heart of your phone.
Now, follow the article included, dismantle your HTC as in
the article, dry everything with a hairdryer and be carefull
with flat cables or with board components.
In both boards carefully remove the small metal covers,
as it can retain water inside, you also use a tooth brush
to clean those areas, but again carefull with components.
Leave digitizer in place and remove display, with hair dryer
try to dry as much water as you can, otherwise, later you
will see spots when display is working.
Try it out and then let me know results.

My friend dropped her phone into a glass of water. Stupid her just had it off over night with battery removed, but next day decided to just pop battery in and start using it. Calls me later(spare phone) and tells me details.
I go get it disassemble, rubbing alcohol, the works. Let dry for 48 hours. Everything on the phone works other than it wont charge the battery. She has 2 batteries one which is new. Besides getting an external charger for it, is there anything else I could do to fix it? Is there a part I can replace, or something software related that might fix it?

I suspect (hope) only the battery was damaged from your friend's phone. Have her go to TMO and see if they will let her test charge a display Slide battery in her phone. If it starts charging and increases by a few percentage points then perhaps only the battery was damaged. Hope the situation gets worked out.
Just dropped mine in a full sink two weeks ago ... mine hit the edge and knocked the battery out milliseconds before the device hit the water (miracle). Fully submerged. Dried it over a weak heater vent for 2 days. Works just like new. I figured the phone was ok as I snatched it out of the water very quickly. My main concern was the battery ... I thought I might have damaged it. So far everything is just fine.
We have tested it with a new battery. Phone works perfectly fine just wont charge the battery, every feature works. Can even connect to computer with usb.
What im trying to figure out is if there is something I can do i.e. fix it somehow cheaply
Your best bet is probably just using an external charger. I'm using a friends old phone that had a full glass of lemonade spill on it and sit for 5 hours in liquid, turned on. When he woke up the battery was sparking, contact was melted. The battery was partially fried from the short circuit, so I just bought a new battery. The only thing that doesn't work in the phone is the camera. The real downside to that is if any app tries to access the camera the phone completely locks up, takes about 10 seconds just to get out of the black screen.
I'm digressing, anyway, yeah, external charger is probably the best bet, if she has two batteries that should work just fine. Use one while the other is charging.

ultrasonic cleaning
if you disassemble to the charging circuit board or motherboard and try placing it into an alcohol solution in a u/s cleaner (also used for jewelry), this might clean the contacts and allow charging, might not do anything or damage the board. no guarantees on this method , but will sometimes work.
ps. remember that some circuit board cleaner solutions will dissolve plastic, recommend alcohol.

The best solution I have found for a wet phone, or any device for that matter, is to take the device apart as much as possible. Then put it in a ziploc bag of rice. Seal it up good so air doesn't get in. The rice will suck all the water out. I have done this with my old G1 (twice) as well as other phones.
evo 4g slid off my lap wall turning a corner and landed in my 1qt 3/4s full cup of water. it wasn't till my second twitter text that i finely figured out were the fancy lights were coming from. i pulled the phone had my fiance take the cover and battery out instantly.
when i got home we took the phone, with no battery and back and submerged it in rice. after three days the phone seamed dry except for a small amount of water trapped between the digitizer and the screen. after another two days in rice i tracked down the tools needed to disassemble my phone to let out the trapped water.
while letting out the trapped water i broke the ribbon cable for the digitizer and had to order a replacement. 5 days later i installed the new digitizer only to find that my phone would not boot past the white EVO 4g Sprint screen. (given normal time)
over the days and mostly after rooting my replacement Evo i managed to get the swimming one to boot into Hboot/fastboot. from there it froze before booting into recovery. so i flashed a new recovery. then after letting it boot for 15min i got into recovery were i flashed a new rom.
where i stand now.
the phone takes a 20+ to boot then once it does i cant unlock the phone or get any indication that the touch is working. additionally when i hit the power button and wait a solid minute it brings up the lock screen again, shows the lock screen then immediately goes black again.
im running out of things flash. any ideas.

Yeah unfortunately you probably fried the electronics and corrupt the data, water damage kills phones and if you dont dry it out in rice until its all done your probally going to fry your phone! so you should be lucky if your sd card still works after this!
But this is all hardware and you will need to get your phone replaced hopefully you have TEP!

I will reinforce the above statements. If your SD card doesnt work then plug it into your computer, enter disk manager, and see if your system at least sees that the disk is present. If it does then you can run File Scavenger and save your files. If not....then toss it in the trash with your phone.
i don't think it is a hardware issue. i have examined the board and can find no evidence of a short. also the phone boots, it takes a while but it boots, Hboot and Recovery (now) are fully functional. if it was hardware seams i would have less than i have.
is there a way to get a hardware error log or report through fastboot or adb? I'm not going to replace any components but it would be nice to at least know for sure what the final nail is/was.
O the SD card never gave me an issue. have been using it in both my temp phone and the replacement evo mentioned in the original post.

I own a repair shop and this is what I do and I have about a 70% success rate.
Take apart your whole phone again, go to the store (K-Mart, Walmart, Drug Store and get a bottle of atleast 92% Isopropyl Alcohol. Submerge only the logic board in the alcohol and let it sit 2-3 hours. Then while still in the container of alcohol take a soft bristle toothbrush and clean all the contacts.
Take the logic board out and let dry (Should only take about 30 mins, alcohol dries very fast)
Reassemble and try to boot!!!

so this worked. the phone boots, unlocks, and does all the basic things i would expect it to for not having all of its screws

long term affects
the phone takes forever to boot. i'm talking 10 min at the minimum. i have installed several ROMs, upgraded the recovery, no matter what i do this phone takes 100 200 % longer to boot than any of my other evo 4gs running the same rom, kernel, and recovery.
any ideas?
it really slows down my testing.
I want to test ROMS and use as a remote for my XBMC setup.

YES IT DID.
I use it as a network remote and for games, so i haven't tested the cell phone aspects of the phone but i don't see why they wouldn't work.
the long boot time is only draw back i have found.

I know there is a lot of information on the Internet about Water Damage, but i can't seem to find out what's going with my device.
Here's what happened: i went for a run with my phone stuck to my arm by a rubber band. When i got home i found that the sweat of my arm had damaged the phone: it didn't want to turn on and the water damage stickers are red. I dried the sweat of the back of the phone with a towel (it wasn't much) and i was able to turn it up for an hour or two and it seemed fined, only the battery indicator was crazy (exclamation mark). I wasn't able to charge my battery as well. The indicator led is crazy as well (when i try to charge my battery it blinks orange, green and so on).
The phone itself seems fine is the battery that cannot charge and seems damaged causing the phone to turn off frequently. What do you think? Should a buy a new battery or a new phone?

1: don't run with the phone. Two: try with another battery, the battery seems broken.

If phone is still damp put it in a bowl of dry rice, it will remove any excess moisture.

That phone is not designed to be used that way, you should use an external casing that's not connected to your skin and as such less likely to be sweat damaged. (i.e.: belt clip of sort).
The suggestion to place into a jar of rice for a day or two is typically a good way to draw out any moisture, the main thing you DO NOT want to do is attempt to power it on or charge while humidity still exists inside the device.
I bought a new battery and the phone works just fine, only the old battery was damaged. Thanks for the help.
This is more of a question about sweat
I didn't want to make another thread about sweat damage, so i figured I might as well ask here. I have a problem where it seem that my touch screen collects moisture inside my pants pocket. One time at the mall i stood watching a football game for like an hour, when i took out my phone the screen was completely soaked like i gave it a good spray with a spray bottle. I think the problem is that the phone is warm so it causes me to sweat more? Funny thing is I feel warm but it doesn't seem like i was sweating, yet screen still collect alot of moisture.
The phone is working fine, no sign of any water related damage and that incident been about 2 weeks ago. My real question is, anyone got any recommendation as to how to carry my phone to prevent any further water exposure?

I did. And the water condensated inside my phone. When i got home i turned it off and placed it into a jar of rice, because it should help the water to evaporate quicker, or something like that, tried to turn it on after 2 days, it turned on, but there was a water still visible under the screen, so i turned it off again, but it started to heat up, so i had to take it to a technician to disassembly it so that he could remove the battery, but the main board got damaged, so my phone is probably done. Unless you know where to get a cheap board shipped worldwide, I'll have to start saving up, either to buy another one, or to buy Desire X?
So I dropped my phone in my bath
It was in the bath like literally 1 second or such and I grabbed it out real quick. The screen was on all the time until I pulled the battery
I immediately pulled the battery out and cleaned the outisde with a towel.
After an hour or so I inserted the battery and it came up with the white screen itself(i didn't have to push the power button myself)
Then i waited and it got stuck on the second bootscreen(past the white HTC logo)
Then i pulled the battery out and back in, now the only thing it does is give me a red led.
Have I killed it by trying to power it on? I should've had put the phone in a bowl of rice.

Let the device dry with the lid and battery taken off, preferably near a heater or something.
Or use a dryer with lowest heat setting.
After you have dried it, put it in the freezer for 30 minutes. That should freeze the remaining water particles. Try to boot afterwards.

After I dried it with the hairdryer I 'accidentally' put the battery back in and the screen turned on.(first I had no screen, only red led).
But I immediately pulled the battery out again. Does the fact that the screen still turns on indicate that it is probably possible to make it work again? So you say put it near a heater and then 30 minutes in the freezer? With that you mean without battery, sd card and sim card?
I'm gonna try that after I take it out of the rice.

I mentioned putting the phone in the freezer without the battery because extreme temperatures damage them.

This reminded me of my retarded friend who tried to dry his phone using a microwave. It didn't work... at all.. and neither does the microwave since.

I think a microwave is hotter than that. I'll let you know if I can get my phone to work.

Not sure if you guys are kidding about putting electronics in a microwave...
The only proper way is to disassemble the phone and let it dry. Then clean it with a contact spray maybe.
I dropped my DESIRE 3-4 weeks ago in the f*cking toilet.
What i did was:
pulling out the batt
cleaning the phone with antibacterial wipes
cleaning the phone with contact spray
leave it for 2 days(just in case) to dry
..and now my phone works fine.
PS: you have NO idea how much water was inside the phone, despite it was with TPU cover, and dropped in the water for not more than a 1-2 sec.
NEVER EVER rely on drying it just like that

I somehow don't think its the heat the key is in the name MICROWAVE
There'd of been sparks flying everywhere in the microwave.

Congrats on drying it out.
Be VERY careful with heat -- that's what kills things worse than water IMHO
I also have a "Drowned Desire" (cdma kind) my freind gave it to me she dropped it in sink.
Instead of rice I used the dessicant packs you get @ the ammo store. Set the phone battery out open side down on top of the dessicant and another pack on top then set the shoe-box on top of the hot water heater (it's warm-ish, and dry, area)
Left it for 5 days and it worked
Still tryin to get the rootkit out of it

Here I am again, after a week in a bowl of rice the desire is working perfectly again,I was surprised that it even booted up.
I got a friend's desire so now I have two of them. Anyway, it is working again thanks to the rice.
