ARC vs X10 build quality - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys, I currently own an X10 and would like to purchase a Arc as well. The only reason I have not, is cause I've seen a few threads regarding cracks and color fading. So I'm wondering if these are common issues?

If you get a blue one you have a high chance to get the crack, with a silver one you can have luck and don't get the crack.
But it's still an awesome device

Battery cover is a tiny bit squeaky on the silver model, but I put a small paper under the cover and now its better.

Thanks for the heads up guys, gonna take the plunge.:

i think the build quality on the x10 is better. but my arc has been dropped a couple of times on concrete and still works fine besides a couple of nasty gashes on the corners. at first, you will be annoyed by the creaky rear cover, but overall it's definitely worth the plunge.

I have a black one and after a few months use (with no cover) there is no fading, creaking or cracking.. Just a couple of little chips where I have dropped it! lol

I've used the X10 and now i'm using the Arc for two months now.
So far, there's no crack or chip. That's maybe because I use a silicone case.
The screen on the Arc is noticeably larger and I feel that the arc has a better grip than the X10. I also think that the arc fits much better in my jeans. Other than that, the software and hardware are mostly the same with the arc have slightly better processor/ram.

Is Xperia series build quality going down the drain?

When SE released the first Xperia X1, it had a solid build quality and the phone felt like a gold brick (like how iPhone 4 feels). Except, they over did the design by having too many different pieces instead of a nice monolithic design like Sony's XBR TVs have.
X10 felt better than Arc because the battery cover never felt wobbly or squeaky. My first Misty Silver Arc's battery cover felt very squeaky and I thought it could be because I pressed the full-body protector too hard. Now, I replaced it with Midnight Blue Arc and I am seeing the battery cover feel/sound hallow at some spots and also feels very wobbly depending on where I hold the phone. I just hate that feeling of loose parts. To avoid that I am trying hard to hold the phone at the very bottom edges so I don't feel that wobbly squeaks. Now I read in the review of Neo on engadget and they mention Neo battery cover feels much worse. Is Xperia series going to go down in quality with each new phone?
Hope someone from SE reads this forum. My question is why is SE letting their products have such lousy back covers? The only reason I am sticking with SE is because I love their designs and used to love their dumb phone OS but this battery cover problems have been with most of their phones.
I hope SE makes a phone that feels solid even if it feels little heavy. Something like X1 but with minimal cuts and pieces on the phones. Nokia N8 like phone with all metal, some weight, and SE design will be wonderful.
I agree about the back cover so i bought an x10 style matte battery cover for it. Waiting for delivery but everyone says it's a huge improvement.

My Midnight Blue felt squeaky and cheap too.
Not cheap and doesn't excuse poor build, but this has now given it the solid feel to match its looks:

my set was ok surprisingly
My x1 was terrible, this also suffered from cracks in the housing.
This is why I'm following this thread as want the ray or arc as my next handset but interested in this sort of stuff.

Curious to find out how Ray is going to be. I think SE should concentrate on customers who want Android but want a phone that is unique in style and has excellent build quality. They should try to be the Leica of android phones.
They have got the capability but not the balls.

I think they just don't have the balls to survive against like likes of Samsung, LGs, and even Motorola in the US. No US carrier cares about SE phones and even Netflix app almost made their app available for several phones but none from SE.
I think they should rethink their strategy and aim for customers looking for exclusivity with top quality product. Exclusivity with cheap build quality can't succeed for long.
I bought an (original SE) soft black back cover from Ebay, my Arc looks so much better now, and feels like a solid brick. More grippy, too. It squeaked like a hamster and felt like a toy with the horribly cheap feeling glossy plastic cover.

Really, mate? ROFL!
That certainly didn't come from SE itself. There's a difference in being made FOR SE and made BY SE.
Would you please show me where to find the back cover?

Build quality = annoying

hey guys i really like the gnex but the build quality isn't really good
the backcover crunches in the near of the camera
and today i experienced another quality issue after 10 days of using the phone really carefully the bottom of the phone clatters when i push
for such a expensive phone it's really disappointing
is it just me or somebody else noticed that

Yeah there is a soft spot below the camera where it slightly pushes in. I think it is because of the design of the back cover

Mines fine, though the back cover seems to be fairly flimsy, definitely will get a case.
Use a bit of tape
I also noticed there is some space under the batery cover around the camera. It produced annoying noices when making a call so I just put on some small strips of tape. Problem solved.

Good idea. I will do the same.
i guess the gap is important to release the heat at the top part during data usage
after applying tape.. dont you have heat issues?
No heat problem
The space between the cover and the body is really small. A few single tape strips at the right place prevent the cover from moving. No heat problems at all.

Mine does this if I don't have the rear cover installed correctly. It still has a TINY amount of push, but less than a mm. You can't notice it unless you look really close to it while pushing.

Good point, tape may become super-stuck-melted-on after a good round of video watching or game playing.
I've had to swap my Nexus for another one when my vibration motor started making weird noises. When my phone would vibrate, it would also come along with an annoying hum like a screw was loose or something.
Only had the phone for a week before that started happening.
I have the extended battery cover and it creaks really bad. My volume rocker is also loose and rattles. I am going to Verizon tomorrow to see if I can find a unit that is more solid.
Sent from my Verizon Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Mine is solid as a rock. No creaking, no soft spots. I have a spare battery and swap it out once in a wile so I take the cover on and off a few times a week. It may just be that it's not sitting right.
Best way I have found is to start at the bottom work your way up one side then down the other. If any clips are missed or not sitting right it will feel cheap. Once they are all clipped properly, it's as solid as can be.

+ 1 to gnex build quality, not quite the heft of the n1 but it is as solid can be for a plastic phone.

I actually prefer the light weight plastic that samsung builds thier devices with. Look into a motorola or iphone if you want the battleship feel.
My post in this thread explains what that nose on the back cover is and how I fixed it on my phone.

ARC(S) worth the buy?

hi all
i recently asked a retailer about the price for the arc and acr S recently ( dunno why but o have the urge to do so and i did ) he said the price for ARC is RM1000 and ARC S is RM 1300 which is surprisingly cheap ..and i do love the phone ..never seen anyone used it but i looks gorgeous in videos ...i just bought a galaxy ACE about a month ago and i am planning to change one at the end of the year at december ...so should i get the arc ? i know it have some crappy processors and low ram but i want to hear some opinion for the users ...is it worth the RM 1000? and i do expect the price to drop to RM800 at the end of the year ...
Look wise, the arc is top tier, hands down. I guess it really ties down to what you expect out of your phone. Personally, a phone to me is to remain a phone and not a mini laptop, so the specs of the Arc S is good enough for me. It's fast enough to do everything that I want; stream videos, browse the internet, call/email/text etc. All those hype about new phones, dual cores and etc, what is the purpose exactly? It loads a page faster in 1 sec? Ridiculous. Didn't mean to rant haha, but yeah. If you want a phone that stands out and looks good and is good for everyday use, I would recommend getting the Arc/S. Not to mention, the Camera is awesome.
Hey tohno, nice seeing u here brick guy. Im using arc s rite now n lovin it. Anyway i bought mine from a guy who just used it for two months at rm900. Its used but the guy is new with android n havent mod anything yet so i think its fair if i said that it come fresh from the shop

I bought mine 'cause it was on Special + 50€ cash back. So i got it for 350€ in last July.
Love it except the screen which is too weak. And now it is quite weak for new apps.
I'm looking to get a Nexus in a couple of month. But since i unlocked my bootloader I really enjoy it more.
This is definitely not a waste of money.

Please don't buy neither Arc nor Arc S, you will face some very depressing problems with these phones, as Arc user I don't suggest this phone because of very poor quality of the phone. You maybe extra careful with your phone but you won't avoid housing crack, scratched screen and body damages. Housing crack appears on almost all Xperia Arc phones, as for screen I would say, its very bright and high quality but, it is not gorilla glass, and you can scratch it by mistake for example when cleaning, as I did. As for body I would say that design is very sexy but you will notice small dots around the screen, and on the back panel, paint gets peeled. My advice, hold the phone in vacuum or wait for Xperia S!

Really? I didnt know...cause i have dropoed my arc so.many times...i have slept over it, i aint using a screen protector, still the screen is fine! Its quite durable mate! The only problem is..it gets really slow sometimes! So even i wouldn't suggest to purchase arc. But i still love it <3:-D

well i am actually of buying this phone cause of the relatively cheap price...i just got my ace just a month ago but seeing the arc's cheap price i just can't resist to buy it...and by the end of the year i think arc s will be below RM1000 by then it's a sure buy ..i cant afford high end phones ( expensive ones at least ) like S2 ( it's too common!! ) , sensation etc ...
If I were you, I would buy LG Optimus 2X instead. It has Tegra 2 chipset and a dual-core processor. That makes it much better phone. Cons are it doesn't have as good camera, and the screen is a bit smaller(4.2 > 4.0).
Here in Switzerland it is even cheaper.
I've my arc s for close to 5 months and I do not regret it. It's camera is one of the best among the smart phones for the price of it. When my friend who own the iPhone 4 took the same night scene with my arc, the arc's capture the scene very well, not too bright or too dark -- like what the iPhone does.
Responsiveness is reasonably fast even though it's not rooted. Depending on how you handle the phone, mine is still scratch-free and beautiful. No cracks. The factory screen does trap specks of dust quite easily, but this can be avoided if you apply another matte filter over it.
The phone is light and still able to fit into my pocket despite it's 4+ inch screen. The big screen makes it comfortable to browse webs, watch videos and play games.
What I find a nuisance in the arc is the small internal memory capacity, which means you'll have to be selective in the apps you store in the phone.
Definitely worth buying & keeping if you're a light to medium-usage user.
Good luck in your choice!

S III Durability

Hi folks
I'm considering getting the S III but am not sure about the screen durability as i've heard a lot of mixed reviews. How durable is it? Looking at some break tests on youtube suggests that the screen is a lot more sensitive as compared to other phone. Is that true?
btw, what is a good case for this device ?
Thanks!

I dunno if this counts, but I keep dropping mine and the only damage so far is a little scratching on the corner of the outer plastic bezel when I dropped it once pretty hard on some rough tar. I haven't seen any other blemishes on the case, and so far no scratching at all on the glass. I loved my Nexus One, but the glass on that scratched pretty easy just sitting in my pocket. Not so with the SIII, no scratches at all on the glass in the 3 mo I've had the phone.
I don't have a case for it.

Similar experience...phone dropped from my pocket while sitting, landed on the corner, cracked screen...probably hit the weak spot on the phone, regardless, shouldn't break that easily IMO..
It is not durable at all compared to my previous phones (gs2, hd2) if you drop it there will be serious cosmetic damage. The plastic is extremely soft.

Get an Otter Box, you pay that much for a phone then spend an extra 50 bucks to keep it safe.
Get a case if your gonna pick up the GS3... its a beautiful phone but you need to make sure you can protect it... I dropped my phone 4 times since I got it and thank God I bought a case for it. If I didn't have one, then my screen would have been shattered already

yea that's why i'm hesitant in buying it (3 actually). The issue seems widespread and if it is a case of bigger screen then it is a serious design flaw or maybe a manufacturing flaw. At this point im probably going to put off buying this phone but let's see if things change

It's a phone and it uses glass, it doesn't matter what phone it is if your looking at Youtube and their hitting it with a hammer or dragging a razor over the screen then it's gonna do as expected. It's almost comical that people do these tests considering you spend money on the phone you should be responsible for it and take care of it. Accidents happen and the carriers know this so instead take care of your property, it doesn't matter who made it or what some moron with a hammer says.
all that is fine but generally speaking one does expect some level of durability for a device that costs upwards of $700 dollars, specially if the company is touting the latest and greatest gorilla glass 2 as one of the main features of the phone. Cellphones break when dropped, everyone should know that. But the amount of complaints i've come across regarding the S III and the different ways the screen is getting damaged is quite abnormal to say the least.
Anyway, i'm still debating whether i should pass on this phone or go for it. Anything new coming up in the coming weeks?

You never hear the whole story either when people give these reviews, "I had it in my pocket and the screen cracked" turns into I was drunk and fell down the stairs.
I still have all of my devices in perfect shape and it all comes down to how well someone takes care of their things. If your gonna carry the phone in your pocket with your car keys then its gonna happen, I see it all the time and like you said at $700.00 you should act like it's worth it. You want an honest opinion on the device? It's worth every penny but the one thing that would make me warm and fuzzy about it is if HTC built the body. It still feels solid but theres nothing like a well built frame like you would find on the One S or X. No other device comes close to the functionality and multitasking that this one does and I own 8 myself (different devices not all cells.)

I have one of these and I'm not a fan at all. Idk why the upper corner is open, but it's very annoying having one corner completely unprotected. Also, it doesn't hold very strong. The choice of silicon rather than tpu for the front part (the back is hard plastic) was not a good one, in my experience silicone is not as sticky or as tight fitting as tpu and causes your phone to pop out fairly easily. Overall, I would not recommend it.

The reason some cases have one corner open like that is because they were designed for the Korean market Galaxy S3, which has an extendable DMB antennae.
It's a liability for the rest of the world, but a necessity for the Korean market.
Mine arrived today. It's a weird little bumper though. I ordered the orange and black one as I thought it looked kinda cool but the colors are inverted. What's up with that?
Also, it's like they got the bumper from the picture, left if for 3 years in the sun and then sent it to me, colors are all faded.
Also, as someone said before, there's one corner unprotected; God knows why. (EDIT: And so does the user above me, didn't read his comment.)
I'll throw this away probably but thanks for the tip haha.

bastards... im still waiting for mine but guess itll be the same. I actually ordered this one cause the design (espec. colour) looked better than the other common bumpers on ebay. but judging from your post its probably the same one :/
One corner is unprotected because South Korean version of the S3 has an antenna for DMB.
DMB is basically a service that allows smaller devices to watch TV, almost every single portable devices has it in Korea.

Precisely... and the South Korean version is a little thicker than the international versions too...this might be why these bumpers do not hold as tightly on them...
