Is Xperia series build quality going down the drain? - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When SE released the first Xperia X1, it had a solid build quality and the phone felt like a gold brick (like how iPhone 4 feels). Except, they over did the design by having too many different pieces instead of a nice monolithic design like Sony's XBR TVs have.
X10 felt better than Arc because the battery cover never felt wobbly or squeaky. My first Misty Silver Arc's battery cover felt very squeaky and I thought it could be because I pressed the full-body protector too hard. Now, I replaced it with Midnight Blue Arc and I am seeing the battery cover feel/sound hallow at some spots and also feels very wobbly depending on where I hold the phone. I just hate that feeling of loose parts. To avoid that I am trying hard to hold the phone at the very bottom edges so I don't feel that wobbly squeaks. Now I read in the review of Neo on engadget and they mention Neo battery cover feels much worse. Is Xperia series going to go down in quality with each new phone?
Hope someone from SE reads this forum. My question is why is SE letting their products have such lousy back covers? The only reason I am sticking with SE is because I love their designs and used to love their dumb phone OS but this battery cover problems have been with most of their phones.
I hope SE makes a phone that feels solid even if it feels little heavy. Something like X1 but with minimal cuts and pieces on the phones. Nokia N8 like phone with all metal, some weight, and SE design will be wonderful.

I agree about the back cover so i bought an x10 style matte battery cover for it. Waiting for delivery but everyone says it's a huge improvement.

My Midnight Blue felt squeaky and cheap too.
Not cheap and doesn't excuse poor build, but this has now given it the solid feel to match its looks:

my set was ok surprisingly

My x1 was terrible, this also suffered from cracks in the housing.
This is why I'm following this thread as want the ray or arc as my next handset but interested in this sort of stuff.

Curious to find out how Ray is going to be. I think SE should concentrate on customers who want Android but want a phone that is unique in style and has excellent build quality. They should try to be the Leica of android phones.

They have got the capability but not the balls.

I think they just don't have the balls to survive against like likes of Samsung, LGs, and even Motorola in the US. No US carrier cares about SE phones and even Netflix app almost made their app available for several phones but none from SE.
I think they should rethink their strategy and aim for customers looking for exclusivity with top quality product. Exclusivity with cheap build quality can't succeed for long.

I bought an (original SE) soft black back cover from Ebay, my Arc looks so much better now, and feels like a solid brick. More grippy, too. It squeaked like a hamster and felt like a toy with the horribly cheap feeling glossy plastic cover.

Really, mate? ROFL!
That certainly didn't come from SE itself. There's a difference in being made FOR SE and made BY SE.

Would you please show me where to find the back cover?

ARC vs X10 build quality

Hello guys, I currently own an X10 and would like to purchase a Arc as well. The only reason I have not, is cause I've seen a few threads regarding cracks and color fading. So I'm wondering if these are common issues?
If you get a blue one you have a high chance to get the crack, with a silver one you can have luck and don't get the crack.
But it's still an awesome device

Battery cover is a tiny bit squeaky on the silver model, but I put a small paper under the cover and now its better.

Thanks for the heads up guys, gonna take the plunge.:
i think the build quality on the x10 is better. but my arc has been dropped a couple of times on concrete and still works fine besides a couple of nasty gashes on the corners. at first, you will be annoyed by the creaky rear cover, but overall it's definitely worth the plunge.
I have a black one and after a few months use (with no cover) there is no fading, creaking or cracking.. Just a couple of little chips where I have dropped it! lol
I've used the X10 and now i'm using the Arc for two months now.
So far, there's no crack or chip. That's maybe because I use a silicone case.
The screen on the Arc is noticeably larger and I feel that the arc has a better grip than the X10. I also think that the arc fits much better in my jeans. Other than that, the software and hardware are mostly the same with the arc have slightly better processor/ram.

Waterproof casing for the Arc S

Hi, anyone used a waterproof casing for the Arc S? Off skiing in Jan and want to take my phone, but don't want to get it wet.
I was looking at the Kursell SealABox, but it looks like a general purpose case, so not sure how usable the phone is inside it.
Looking for someone that's got xperience of this.
Thanks.
definitely I should get one for me.. but maybe its too late, after I dropped it into the toilet haha, shame :C
if you can probably wait a little more, i've heard zagg is commin up with a spray on waterproofing thing they call HzO... *not meant to advertise...

http://www.xperiablog.net/2011/06/28/elecom-set-to-release-waterproof-case-for-the-xperia-arc/
I've used Aquapac cases for years and never had a leak.. Spent a whole summer swimming with my x10mini in one.. Phone stays fully functional, optical plastic so photos come out good and touch screen works through the plastic. Sound wasn't affected too much either so I could still take calls.. However I recommend a good bt headset for skiing.. Nothing like music while you ski.

Flip Cover - Similar to S3 one?

Hi, I looking for a flip cover similar to the S3 one like this.

Is there a similar one for the S2?

I bought this one eight days ago, and received it today. It's pretty sweet. Perfect fit for the i9100 with standard 1650 mAh battery
The only drawback is that when the phone is laying flat on a table with the screen pointing up, the flip cover has a 15 degree angle. Thus, it does not stick to the screen as good as the official S3 flip cover. But this might improve with time, I imagine.

Hi, thanks for this!
Yeah my dad had unofficial one for his S3, and when he first got it, it didn't close fully, but he's had it several months now, and it remains shut.
Can you comment in the quality of the back cover? Is it similar to the material and build quality of the original?
Is the colour matching exactly the same? No signs of cheapness and colour fading away yet?
Cheers.

The back cover quality seems equal to the original, but it is a tad bulkier (only some millimetres, I figure) and not as flexible. The texture is the same as the original one, but the colour is more grey/black (but it looks good).

Waterproof case?

I don't understand why no one had made a waterproof case for this amazing phone yet. I love the water and I love water pictures. I also love the pictures I can take with this phone and the slow motion option. If I could combine them with a waterproof case I'd be ecstatic. Thoughts anyone?

Because our phones are porous. Speaker hole. Headphone jack. Charging port. And other gaps in the body.
A case would have to completely seal off the entire phone to work underwater. Like the previous poster said, the only option for that is a pouch, which is cumbersome, but the only option for underwater photos.
So what is the difference between our phone and say the gs3 or iPhone which are both again porous

Well for one, the rear housing is not sealed. There is very little adhesive keeping the housing stuck to the front. The phone is pretty much open. From right next to the display. I believe GS3 and iP both are very well sealed from the front. It's easier to seal off the back than the front.
Second, I don't think other phones have open speaker holes. This one may neither, but I think it has a greater chance for failure due to the greater number of holes.

Well for one, the rear housing is not sealed. There is very little adhesive keeping the housing stuck to the front. The phone is pretty much open - The S3 has a snap on cover on the rear, no rubber seal around it, so as waterproof as a paper bag
I believe GS3 and iP both are very well sealed from the front - Nope, they both have a hardware button that has no IP rated seal around them
I don't think other phones have open speaker holes - The S3 has a speaker grill on the rear, to the right of the camera

I feel it's less about the design and more about which third party companies want to support and make accessories for the One. More or less you're asking for a LifeProof for our phone. And companies like LifeProof don't see the "high" demand and would rather make cases for iphones and galaxies because they're a larger market. If more people asked, I'm sure they would accommodate eventually. (Hopefully)
I did get a reply on lifeproof's Facebook page and they said that they do not have any plans for our phone but thank you for our interest. I'm going to bug them some more.
Apparently this one fits the S3 & S4, I wonder if the One will squeeze in there as well
That would be great if they came out with a water proof case. Hopefully they will come out with one soon.

This.
If you want real protection you should not expect to use the device. A touch screen device can't work reliably with a true solution that allows full submersion with pressure. If you want to take pix underwater they make underwater (capable) cameras or you can shell out the $$$ for a waterproof box for your SLR, etc.

[CASE REVIEW] Ringke - Fusion (Smoke Black) for Sony Xperia Z3c

Hi fellow XDA roamers,
As promised, I'll be doing a quick review of the Ringke - Fusion (Smoke Black) for Sony Xperia Z3 Compact smartphone.
Here's the Amazon page : Fusion (Smoke Black)
And here's the official website (thanks to @sh4d0wf0x) : Rearth - Ringke Fusion
For some reason, I can't find any official website, not that I need one but sometimes it can help to make sure the product isn't coming from some cheap company.
After my desastrous experience with the CaseMate - Tough Case I was quite impatient to get this case, I even ordered it the morning I got the CaseMate.
I got it for a whopping 13 euros (there was a nice sale on it) instead of 30 and I received it in less than 4 days, another end of the year miracle !
Unboxing
When you receive this case, you know that your cash didn't went to the packaging, a simple translucent plastic bag with a pre-cut opening
The little bag contains the most basic accessories :
The case
A screen protector
A case template for cutting your own back image for the case
Yup, that's it... But who needs extras nowadays ?
At least everything is looking sharp and durable, this time the case fits perfectly the smartphone and doesn't leave any gaps.
It feels secure and looks nice altogether, I must say that this case is quite simple but does its job perfectly.
I haven't dropped my phone since then but I do think it will come unscathed.
A nice addition are little bumps on the back side of the case at each corners, so when the phone is placed on the back, the whole case isn't touching the surface and they're about 1 mm tall so they won't interfere with your hand.
As for the users who are wondering about the little USB hatch, it's still very easy to open (I don't have long nails) it and plug the power cord.
The only things that are going the wrong way are the back of the case that "stick" to the phone, sometimes you can see small succion marks but they can be removed with a simple pressure on the side of the case, and the other thing is that it attracts a lot of fingerprints... like a lot of cases...
The screen protections is like any other, nothing particulars about it, it's cut out for the speakers and led and it's mostly an expected thing from a phone case package.
Let's do a roundup !
The pros
Simple but still looks tough
Bumper protection has a nice rubber feel
Covers all the buttons and offer a little rubber cover for the headphone jack
Small bumps on the back
The cons
Small succion marks from the back of the case, the back of the case tends to suck to the back of the phone
Attracts fingerprints, grease marks & dust
Verdict
All in all, this case is living up to my expectations, looks simple but you can feel that the phone is protected and every little additions are welcome and useful.
This case clearly wipe away the bad taste that CaseMate left in my mouth, can't wait to receive the Orzly tempered glass to check if it all works together
Another review for you guys

Too bad for the dock
As for buying it, I can't give your an objective feedback since it's my first Android phone ever but from my experience and the research I've done before jumping in, it's one of the best phone for this kind of size.
This little monster is compact, fast like it's bigger brother and even better looking than him. As for the Sony bloatwares, there are like 10 apps pre-installed, I'm not using most of them but they're not threatening my experience so it's ok for me.
For the custom ROM scarceness, it's linked with the DRM removal associated with unlocking the bootloader. As developers unlock more and more functionalities, more ROM will become available. If you want more informations about that, feel free to look around the General section of the forums.
I'm not very fond of custom ROM (I'm new to this) so for now I'll stick with the stock one.
Buying this phone is more of a love @ first sight and personal tastes, so it's mainly up to you to decide whether you will throw your cash at the screen or not.
Thanks for the insight.
Yeah it'd be my 6th Android phone, with my first being the very first Android phone (HTC Dream).
I've pretty much always used a custom rom with the exception of using rooted stock on the Nexus 5.
The hardware is what appealed to me as well, but it doesn't seem like the software is going to cut it just yet. S:

Sorry I'm still using the USB cable to charge it but I've already made my mind to buy the Magnector X2 magnetic charger when I have the money, maybe later this year.
I bought both the Ringke and the Cruizerlite. I wanted to like the Ringke, but the left side along the charging port and the sd card port is just way to loose. I can't help but think it would even get looser over time and use. My phone wears the Cruizerlite and I'm very happy with it. The only thing I would change about the Cruizerlite is to make a version with a plain back on it.

Thanks for the insight, it's true that the left side is loose, but I'm not really complaining since I only manipulate this side when I need to plug the USB cable.
For now the Ringke is more than enough for me, the Cruzerlite seems a little bit flimsy for me and the way it blocks the USB section is bothering me. Maybe when I'll have a magnetic charger I will try this one.
I probably should have mentioned that I use the magnetic desk charger and I pair my phone with my PC over WiFi for any transfers, therefore I have no need to access the usb port.

Its the best phone I have owned and the ONLY android phone that I haven't rooted. There is no need.
Sony Skin is VERY minimal and I like the Sony Apps including the Walkman and Album. Nova launcher and a Lollipop Theme (Via Sony's own theming engine) has produced a phone I have ZERO complaints with.
Also the battery really is epic, I use stamina mode and have full sync of gmail, exchange, messenger, whatsapp, the lot and easily leave work with 70-75%
My only complaint like others have is the camera, normal lights its fantastic but low light over cameras beat it.
Trust me this is a great phone. And Lollipop is coming next month.
Seriously just buy one.
