I had a question regarding the 32GB upgrade in internal memory for the HD7. I have not done this but was wondering that if I backup my data using the backup feature in Zune, will I be able to restore my data once I put my 32GB microSD card into the HD7(after hard reset and etc.)?
I plan on putting DFT's Boot loader and the future Chevron 7720 ROM (once it comes out).

I remember reading somewhere that this is not possible. I think it was in the thread for the Back-up/Restore App.

Additional tips and observances:
*You CAN'T change the memory size and perform a restore, I already know this doesnt work so forget about adding memory and just restoring
*To my knowledge you can't backup from one device and restore to another as the backup files are signed/ID'd to the device that made the backup.

Hi Guys
I'm swapping my desire for a new phone tomorrow hopefully due to the firmware issue. I've set the phone to back up automatically to the SD card, when I go to T-mobile to swap handsets, will I be able to take the SD card out of the current phone, put it in the new phone and restore (and does this happen automatically?) What will be restored (ie contacts/settings/mail etc?)
Thanks in advance
I'm interested in if this is possible if i simply copy the memory stick contents to my pc and copy it to the new one, unless htc sync caters for that.
Someone can correct me, but it depends on what you used to backup stuff.
What did you use?
So far, I have chosen to backup through the phone settings onto the SD card, I was also going to copy the contents of the SD card onto a folder on my laptop before swapping them over.
Any suggestions?!
As far as i am aware, as soon as your new phone boots with yopur old SD card, it will pop up saying a backup has been found do you want to restore. Click yest and it will restore your settings.

Excellent, that is exactly what I was hoping. Does the phone update the backup when it reboots, or is there another way to make sure the data is an up to date as possible.
Still waiting for t-mobile to get a replacement in stock of course... zzzzzz...... LOL
Guys,
I read this forum every single day and learned a great deal. I've got a good idea about rooting, flashing etc, but have couple of Yes/No questions, so please bear with me.
I have a T-Mobile NL desire, branded and locked, and my questions are:
1. Can I make 4 GB stock SD card currently I use a Goldcard? It came preinstalled with the phone and I haven't even taken it out. Would I lose any data?
2. Can Goldcard and APP2SD card be the same? I know APP2SD require partitioning. Does it also require formatting? If I understand correctly Goldcard only changes some "internal sectors" of the SD card, so I thought that might be possible?
3. I see a lot of recovery methods on the development forum (Clockwork, AM recovery, Fake-flash, unrevoked etc). Some require USB connection some dont. Which one at the moment do you think is the best to root your device and install APP2SD?
4. As I understand Nandroid does a full ROM backup while Titanium backs up your apps and settings. Can I backup my current T-Mobile ROM with Nandroid before rooting, and restore it later if needed?
Many thanks in advance, this is a great community to learn and share!

1. The stock card will be fine, and I think you will lose everything on it. Never needed on my self so I'm not 100% on that. Just copy everything from SD to your PC.
2. Not sure about the gold card bits, but If you partition your SD card it will delete all data on it.
3. Use fake flash or unrevoked after you have completed step 1. The old usb method leaves you at risk of semi bricking the phone.
4. You only have access to the nandroid option after the rooting process. So you can't backup your current rom.
A2SD will format your card, so I recommend having two cards - original 4 gig card which will be used as goldcard, and other (preferably bigger) card which you will use everyday.
After you wipe everything and flash new rom with gold card inside (according to instructions), you will have to turn off your phone, change gold card with another one, enter hboot, recovery and partition new card before rebooting.
There are two reasons why I would recommend recovery with pushfiles_windows.zip (which you can find here: http://nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/05/how-to-root-your-htc-desire/ ) instead of fake flash:
- fake flash desn't have power off/turn off option which pushfiles has, I had to turn phone off with power button, and I wasn't sure if I turned it off or put it to sleep before pulling battery out... too much stress
- when I exchanged gold card with new one, I wasn't sure will I be able to enter recovery with fake flash on it, so I used old school pushfiles with USB
Beware that free and full Titanium Backup are two different things: full is a great backup tool that will restore everything like it was after first reboot, and I wouldn't recommend free version to anyone
If I plan on buying a 16gb card do I need to copy the files from the stock 8gb over to it or not?
Also, a simple question that probably has a simple answer but just to be safe. It won't mess up root/unlocked nand if I do, right? And it won't mess up apps that are currently installed?
you do not need to copy any files over, and it will not cause any problems with apps so long as you are not using app2sd on an ext partition.
Also, it will not mess with root so long as you have flashed a custom recovery during nand unlock.

Thank you for clearing that up!
If you have programs that save data on to the SD card then you actually would need to copy them to your new SD card or the data just won't be there.
A few games come to mind, some of my office docs as well as content from dropbox, my RSS news feed configurations, as well as any pictures or videos taken using the evo. If your phone is bone stock though, then no there isn't anything you need to copy over it'll work with an empty card.
After I upgraded my nexus OTA to 4.0.2, my nexus randomly turned off by itself. So I did the factory data reset, but I forgot to backup my phone. I need help recover my images from before

Once it's gone, it's gone.
If you have a backup, restore it
If you don't, why the heck not? YOU'RE SCREWED.
Yeah unfortunately it's gone. Get Titanium Backup from the market and perform a backup. you can set it up to automatically backup any changes, i think.....I haven't tried that option yet. RomManager will backup your current rom if that interests you.
If you can find a way to mount mass storage (which as far as I know isn't possible yet) you can use any number of data recovery utilities to get your data back.
No removable SD card + no USB mass storage is kind of a major fail and my only regret about owning this device...

Caps isn't necessary friend, if they are on your virtual SD card they should still be there. If you've wiped the SD card you can't recover them.

Maybe. Always backup critical data redundantly at least 2 times on separate hdds that are physically and electronically isolated.

Why don't you use Google Backup and Google Photos? Easiest way to backup your stuff.
For data (but not photo) backups you can also use adb.

If the victim device was backed up with Google or Samsung cloud this is an option... if it works.
Easiest and the best way is to back it up yourself.
Google backup is a battery and bandwidth hog.
With large data files in the hundreds of GBs it's a sick joke.
Cloud stuff can get hacked and otherwise lost.
Properly stored enterprise class hhds are very reliable and very well isolated.
If you have an SD card slot use that as a data drive. Only the OS, apps, downloads (temporarily) and DCIM (temporarily) go on internal memory.
Set up right you can do a factory reset with zero data loss in about 2 hours.
Nonetheless you always keep the SD card fully backed up!
A .5tb V30 Lexar card is only $64 now... and they run great.

I used to make regular backups to ext SD when I had a phone that had an ext SD slot. Since 2018 (P2XL) I've been on the Pixel line though.
When I was on HTC devices and Samsung before that though, I'd be fearless flashing stuff. I'd always have my TWRP backup on SD to restore if things went sideways.
