Backup and restore - Desire General

Hi Guys
I'm swapping my desire for a new phone tomorrow hopefully due to the firmware issue. I've set the phone to back up automatically to the SD card, when I go to T-mobile to swap handsets, will I be able to take the SD card out of the current phone, put it in the new phone and restore (and does this happen automatically?) What will be restored (ie contacts/settings/mail etc?)
Thanks in advance

I'm interested in if this is possible if i simply copy the memory stick contents to my pc and copy it to the new one, unless htc sync caters for that.

Someone can correct me, but it depends on what you used to backup stuff.
What did you use?

So far, I have chosen to backup through the phone settings onto the SD card, I was also going to copy the contents of the SD card onto a folder on my laptop before swapping them over.
Any suggestions?!

As far as i am aware, as soon as your new phone boots with yopur old SD card, it will pop up saying a backup has been found do you want to restore. Click yest and it will restore your settings.

Excellent, that is exactly what I was hoping. Does the phone update the backup when it reboots, or is there another way to make sure the data is an up to date as possible.
Still waiting for t-mobile to get a replacement in stock of course... zzzzzz...... LOL

[Q] Best method for recovering/restoring sd card

I've been searching up and down and can't find what I'm looking for here, so first and foremost a preemptive apology should this thread exist and I was unsuccessful in finding it.
I had a couple of questions, does a FACTORY WIPE restore your SD card to a out of the box experience?
If I format my SD card, will installing a factory RUU restore the original content/data that was on the SD card, as you'd experience with a new phone? (think this is a no, but asking nonetheless.)
I have a bunch of stuff on my SD card and I can't recall what content was on there originally, and what content gets added with many of our rooted apps and just rooting in general. I remove the SD card when i take my phone in for service, seems the techs are getting kinda serious about seeing root related content on the sd card, but I got to thinking about the best method to return my phone to an OOTB experience. Thanks in advance!

No, a factory wipe does not wipe SD.....and what i do is just plug SD into comp and copy everything to a separate folder, then mess with it to see what it actually needs and find whats useless......and when it comes to the techs, just do the same but wipe SD card after backing it up.
So what happens when those unfortunate individuals have a bad SD card from which they can't recover it's data, they proceed to purchase a new card, and pop it into the handset. How does that stock content/architecture get pushed back onto the new SD card?

Yea, I believe so
Swyped from my EVO running CyanogenMod 6.1 Nightlies
Yeah you believe so what? Hehehe, sorry It's still clear as mud, and shy of just going ahead and formatting my sd card, and taking the ol' hands on approach, I'd much rather be lazy and someone point me to the definitive answer. Anyone?
Aside from the content which you may have loaded onto the card and want to keep, its ok to format. The operating system will re-install the needed folders onto the card. You could wipe all day long if you choose to and nothing will affect your device. Some folders will re appear instantly while others will appear once you've open the application associated with the folder. Nothing is on the card from the factory anyway. When the EVO was first released the included SD card had HTC Sync installed on it to save you the trouble of downloading it from their site. These cards had issues and needed to be replaced. Other than these early cards, their is no needed software or files on the cards.
Alright, now it's clear to me. Thanks you guys, was more of a sanity check for me got a few things I'm thinking of doing and wanted to start with an OOB experience.
I appreciate it!
Wiped SD Card
On a similar note. I partitioned my card and lost all content. I have yet to figure out a NAND backup but I manually copied everything on the mounted card to a folder on my desktop. However, after the partition a lot of my folders on the card remained empty. It seems everything is working properly now that I copied all the files back to it from my desktop. Any advise on the NAND backup? I'm rooted and NAND unlocked running Nuggy's Unlimited Evo RLS1 Evo 2.2, Radio 2.15.00.11.19, v3.70.651.1, PRI1.90_003, PRL 60675. Thanks

[Q] Removing old clockworkmod backup files

So I have created 2 nandroid backups, and a titanium backup, and now my SD card has no more room on it. I used SwifTP to copy the backups onto my computer. Just to be sure, so I dont F anything up: Is it ok to delete the OLD nandroid backup file? If so, can I do this just by selecting it in Astro, and hitting delete?
Yes, you can delete from Astro if you are 100% certain you are in the right file path, and have the correct file.
You can also delete it from within ROM Manager in the manage/restore backups section - long press what you want to delete, follow prompts.
Unrelated but useful:
A good practice is to every so often copy your SD card contents to your PC so you'll have them, just in case. Maybe every other week or something like that. Why? SD cards do & will fail, and when yours does, you'll have a semi-recent backup of the card.
A full or nearly full SD may make it wonky when you flash a ROM, so maybe consider taking some things off the SD if you can, so the flashing has room to stretch out.
The path is /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2011-01-....yada yada date and time of backup
Thanks for the advice about the full card, I didnt know that.
What I usually do since I still have the OEM card is just leave one backup in there and save the rest to my PC. I then delete them off the SD card to save room. If I ever need to go back to other backups, I can just pull it off my PC without having them all cluttering up my SD card.
You can use rom manager to delete your unneeded backups also

That's pretty much what I do. Then I looked in my Nandroid folder on my computer... it was 30+ GB! Figured I really only need the last few or so. Im always going through and cleaning out my SD card. Between all the roms and apps, lots of junk can be collected.

Wow, only 9.25gb here!
+1 for using Rom Manager

This is the safest method, prevents you from accidentally deleting files from wrong directory. Plus, try to name your backups (NO SPACES!), it makes it all easier.
P.S: My Nandroid folder on my PC is 15GB, on my SD is 600MB (OEM 2GB Card)

Help I've lost my Micro SD Card!

I was on holiday in Rhodes last week and after a drunken night out I managed to loose my desire's sd card. I've ordered a new class 10 16GB card and it should arrive today, is it just a case of putting in my new card and starting from scratch, or do I need to add folders first i.e MP3, Photos etc?. Is there anything I need to download
I did have a backup on my PC from when I upgraded my SD card but I've stupidly deleted it.
To add my phone is rooted and I'm currently running a LeeDroid ROM although I was going to update to his latest Rom..
Thanks for your help
just start from scratch, no problem...btw, since you're. starting from scratch, when you put the card in, it may need to format it to read it...using your phone for this is fine....Also, since you are starting from scratch, now would be.a good time to partition your SD card if your device has roms that support a2sd...if so, just check corresponding roms for your device for instructions on that...also, use dropbox backup in titanium next time, or at least save a nandroid in a dropbox folder if you don't want to start over again...Also, I'd go ahead and make a "rescue" folder on a new card with flashable zips of clockwork, amonra, wimax keys, format_all.zip from calkulin, and a small rooted rom (like sprintlovers), just in case you ever get into trouble. Lastly, your file can probably still be found SOMEWHERE on a windows puter...good luck!
.
^^ Thanks for the advice, I'll give it a go tonight ^^

Noob SD Card Question

Just received my phone via FedEx from Wirefly.
I'm going to keep my 32gb sd card currently in my EVO and use it in my new ET4G. I assume when installing the card in the new phone, it will ask me to format it. That being the case, should I first copy over relevant folders/files onto my PC, format the card in the new phone, and then copy over those folders/files back onto the sd card?
Also, other than media files such as music and photos, what else can I continue to use on the new phone? I don't want to mess anything up. Specifically, can I use the LauncherProPlus backup and instantly recreate the homescreen setup on my old phone? Also, can I keep the titanium backup folder and hold onto it until root is achieved?
And a little off topic but anyone else get their phone this late in the day from Wirefly? I called the number to activate the phone (it's an upgrade and not a new line) and the lady stated that I had to wait until Monday to activate it because their activation group is gone for the day. Wtf!?
It won't ask to format.

I activated mine on the sprint website just entered the DEX number and restarted the phone activated on its own from there.
Formatting only affects the file system, so any FAT32 formatted card will be recognized in any Android phone without having to reformat. Just pop it in and you're good to go.
-NO, you will not be asked to format your sd card, so NO, u do not have to move files to/from computer
-YES, you can keep the backup of launcherpro on there, it will replace all your homescreens (except widgets, widgets do not get restored)
-YES, you can keep your titanium backup files on the sdcard, BUT i recommend you install es file explorer, and cut n paste the titanium backup folder from ur sd card to the phones internal memory... (install titanium backup first (it will not work), and a new folder will be automatically created in internal memory labeled titanium backup), just merge the two folders, 1 from sd card, 1 just created in internal memory

[Q] Titanium Backup.zip question

When I save a Titanium Backup.zip, is that backing everything including the programs and data NOT on the SD card? In otherwords, if I want to make a back up of just the sd card contents if I want to change/upgrade my card, do I just copy the entire sd card to my PC and after formatting the new card just copy everything back? If I use the Titanium Backup.zip won't that wipe over everything and not just the sd card right?

Are you talking about creating an 'update.zip' from Titanium Backup? Assuming this is what you're referring to, though I've never done it, I think all it does is enables you to install TB from CWM directly. I wish most ROMs would just include TB, but since not everyone uses it I understand why they don't.
I don't think this makes a backup of anything really, but I could be wrong. If you want to back everything up, that's where you can nandroid. If you want to backup everything on your SD card, then the steps you stated about copying to a PC are probably your best bet.
Just backup your sd card on a PC, format the new card in the phone (for best compatibility). Then restore everything back onto it from the PC.

Yeah, it starts out as an "Update.zip" but I choose the "Titanium Backup.zip" option. Huh! I did't know that it was only making a backup of Titanium Backup.

I'm not 100% on that, but based on what I read in that option, that's what it sounds like to me. The purpose would be a way for you to restore all your apps if you're lacking a data connection when you flash something new or wipe anything. Chances are slim, but I reckon they're there. If you don't have a data connection, there is no way to download TB and use it to restore anything else...
EDIT: I guess one way to find out would be to make that zip and see how big the file is. If it's only a few megs, then it's just TB. If it's more than that, like over 80ish, then you know it's quite a bit more than just the one app.
