Be sure to thank Necrosan. I have had to pay the $30 a month to use Hotspot for almost a year. His hack allows wired and wireless Hotspot to work for free without having to use another app

Have you rooted your phone yet? If not, I'm assuming that will be step number 1 as I don't think any app will allow you to do this without being rooted, but I cannot say for sure.

Well, you're going to have to root your phone. Then install a new ROM.
Each of the hacks is ROM specific. I can say that SFR1.2 and EH06 are both nice.
Root using the CWM3.1.0.1 purple
SFR needs a kernal flashed after the ROM but before reboot. You may want to use the clean kernel as an easy start. Otherwise any of the EC05 kernels will work.
EH06 has a few nice add-ons avaialble, but no OC/UV kernels (not a big deal, really).
Have fun!

I don't think he would have to install a custom ROM to wifi tether. I mean, if you're going to root, might as well put a custom ROM on there, but if the OP wants to keep it simple and ONLY wifi tether, than he can simply root, install a wifi tether app, and away he goes.

Rooting your device gives you more control over you device than what the manufacturer/carrier allow you.
Idk how to explain roms lol

hello everyone. Sorry to bump this thread back up instead of creating another thread.
Anyways, I am on
Ginerbread EI22
model sph-d700
baseband S700.0.5S.EI22
Kernel: 2.6.35.7
Firmware: 2.3.5
I have been researching and reading as much I can. In order to get the hotspot to work on the epic, I have to root the device. And then upload a rom from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1172576&page=81
Then after, I am good to go?
just a couple of question:
if I root the device, will I lose all my contacts and information that is on the phone?
I know doing this hack give you free wifi/usb tethering but do you have to sign up for any particular service plan?
with the wifi tethering, does anyone know if its infracture or adhoc?
I appreciate any answer or help, thank you very much

1. If you root you won't lose contacts, if you flash a rom it will most likely wipe everything, so after you root, install titanium backup and backup all apps and only certain data. Also you can link your contacts to your gmail so all you have to do is long in your gmail and all your contacts will be there. Or there are a few apps on the market to backup contacts.
2. No signup needed... as its a hacked version of the official one and bypasses the authentication checks, it will just look like you are using a lot of data, they have no way of knowing your tethering unless you show them u r rooted and have that...
3. The hotspot hack is infrastructure and works on 3g/4g and has many security option
Hope that helps and don't forget to hit thanks!

Also i recommend flashing clean GB rom as its as stock as it gets and most stable
awesome thank you for the information. So if I flash the GB rom, I will lose all data until I recover it which shouldn't be a problem. Does the GB rom include the wifi/usb tethering hack?
Davidrules is correct but his recommendation for clean gb is the name of the rom. "CleanGB" by toadlife. You can find it in the developers section, and yes it includes the hack with nothing else needed. Do this: 1-root by watching qbking77's videos in the general section stickey. 2-install and run titanium backup. 3-download CleanGB to your sd card. 4-boot into clockwork (pwr+vol down+camera) and install zip from sd. Choose the cleangb zip file. 5-do a restore from titanium of missing apps and data.
This is an overview but with the videos, you should be good 2 go!

EDIT: I originally said "vol up". Its vol down. Ooops!

Gunther, When you say all Verizon Bloatware has been removed. Does that also include the official Wifi Hotspot app? That's the one thing I actually use from Verizon. It'd be a shame to loose it.
Either way can't wait for root, looks like there are already some great ROMs cooking away.

The free tethering apps are blocked in the market. You can't find them without root. However, they can't block them from being installed if, say, you download it outside of the market and load it on the phone that way.
They may have other dirty tricks implemented on their customized firmware (customized from HTC with bloatware and branding) to block it as well, but I haven't seen evidence of that.
Once rooted and you have a third party firmware, this block shouldn't be applicable anymore.

Hey buddy! Long time no see!
The hack is definitely more than renaming Sprint Hotspot to Wireless Hotspot. I paid for Hotspot starting on launch day of the phone. $30 a month for over 8 months...the would have paid for this phone! Necrosan, I hit you up on G-Talk. If I can be of any help getting the 4G working, let me know

Soooo.. from what I've gathered from this flame fest is that this is better than a simple tether app because it removes checks, meaning sprint won't know you're tethering at all? Or won't care because your phone thinks it should be allowed to? So while something like pdanet makes makes the reports look like you're only accessing things on phone, this will basically say "yea he's tethering to his laptop, but it's all good"?

Yes, its the native Hotspot you use rather than having to add an app. It bypasses the Sprint authorization. Everyone that tried it on the Epic never went back to a tether app.

Hey XDA friends...seriously over my head noob here, I performed the Odin One Click stock root posted on You Tube by QbKing last week. Please help me and i will promise not to ever again take you alls training and long hours learning your craft lighty again! Thx.
Did you keep your data? If so the best way is a totally clean install. Give it another shot.
Thanks

re download the one click, making sure it is ff18 or el29 depending on whether you want gb or ics, then reflash it in odin using the same video as a guide. Weird you lost that status bar though, usually it won't boot if you had a bad download. I suspect with titanium backup you restored a gingerbread launcher on an ics rom or vice versa. Avoid restoring apps from titanium unless you know what you are doing would be my advice.

Thx for that info cuz I was doing just that.... attempting to restore certain back ups, one being the stock launcher. So are you suggesting a complete wipe and then download and reflash the one click? Honestly, the reason I orginally decided on the root option is sorta of dumb I suppose. I was sure that my ex had installed spyware on my phone and saw root as the only viable option for discovery, I actually like the stock rom and initially really liked the stock w/root. Obiviously I have a lot to learn...and express my genuine appreciation for knowlegdeable people such as yourself for helping me pull my head out my ass inch by inch.:

Also if you have access to a wifi connection or good 4g speeds I would recommend downloading all of your apps again and truly starting from scratch. It should take about an hour to do it all assuming you dont have hundreds of apps.
Just sync your phone now, do the one click, after boot update profile and prl then sign into google account and resync then start setting up apps. This is when you decide if you really need all the crap you previously had on your phone.

The link I posted will give you stock rooted ICS. Flashing through odin isn't very dangerous as long as you don't touch your phone while doing it and only flash the file I linked to. And don't restore any titanium backup apps this time unless you can differentiate system apps from store apps.

With restoring your apps. In titanium back up, hit restore missing apps. Then before you hit restore make sure restore only apps not apps+data. This way its only the apps you have downloaded and they are fresh.

It sounds to me like when you used TiBu to move apps to SD you accidently moved system apps including the systemui.apk and dialer and/or contacts possibly. When moving apps to SD thru TiBu never move apks in red, also never restore those apps or their data if you switch to a different rom version

Thanks again for your time....as a father of two teenage boys and too many hobbies, I well appreciate how valuable a commodity time is.
Earlier this week my Sensation 4g died. I bought a Note 2. Little did I know that there were issues with it that I and others have with it, ie: no easy immediate way to do app to sd for instance. Another thing I wanted was to be able to add or take away data from installed apps by connecting the phone to a computer via usb and accessing the files that way, which again doesn't happen without some work.
Since then I have rooted the phone (according to the download mode screen, which says: current binary and system status is custom.
I have left everything stock except for the rooting part and installed Superuser and SuperSU and then tried to run Titanium Backup (free) when it said 'could not access root using \something\something\su command".
I have tried several other apps and methods of trying to do what I want (from the first paragraph) but none have succeeded either due lack of documentation (and I didn't know how to do a certain step or fix something) or it just didn't work.
So where am I at now? I have factory reset my phone and am now honestly not sure where to go or what to do from here. I've Googled and Googled but nothing quite seems to be able to fix what I need and if it does then it has the lack of documentation and can't help me.
Any thoughts or guides or something that anyone could post/link to? Thanks.
I believe this lets you save to SD

If I'm not mistaken but kernels don't deal with being able to save apps to sd. I could be wrong since I don't dabble in android dev. Thanks though.
We need background... 1st of all...
What way did you use to root (Cf_auto_root, Stock-root injected, etc)?
Does your phone still have exynos_exploit or did your phone come with that "OTA Update" pre installed?
What SD card are you using?
What rom/kernal are you trying to run?
Most of the time, in this particular forum, its seems best to just ask what your trying to accomplish within the various rom/kernal thread...
Like lets say im on Stick injected rom/kernal without extsd2internalsd (apps2sd) setup and lets say I want to go to Jedi Master 9.... I would then go to Jedi Master 9 thread and ask for help on how to effectively apply that rom with ExtSd2internalsd support from my current setup, and wait for the OP or seniors to reply... also while "patiently waiting" I would read/search through the hundreds of pages looking for answers/insights to my particular process... if needed might go to my own root process thread and ask for advice on how to get to jedi master 9
Id be more than willing to help you here but need some background on your phones current status and end rom/kernal to provide an answer (to be sure I dont lead you awry

Thanks. I did answer that I am running everything stock at the moment, just rooted, no kernel or rom. I have an 8gb class 4 microsd card. My root method was cf auto root. I also stated what I was hoping to achieve also (in my first paragraph). Hopefully this helps.
Oh, if possible I'd like the easiest way to remove or disable system apps like chat on or some of the tmobile stuff. I tried a couple different methods with that too but couldn't quite get it all to work.
I tried the qtadb app but couldn't get my device to be seen by the program on the computer and i tried that app because I had no idea where to start with regular adb, its been a long time since i've done any of this stuff.
To remove or disable system apps I use root uninstaller, sometimes it won't delete system apps on the first try just exit the app go back and do it again second attemt will do, for your data problem I'll try root browser or root Explorer

I always remove bloatware through Titanium Backup or with a debloated rom

Doesn't that just lead back to my first problem of not being able to get Titanium Backup to run on my phone?
Are you sure your rooted (root checker)? I honestly havent heard of anyone else being unable to install rooted apps (unless they werent rooted (those people generally rerooted to solve that issue)

Well it turns out you can download and install apps requiring root but they just wont run correctly, if at all. I know because after my factory reset, i downloaded and ran 2 root checker apps, both of which said I no longer have root or something. So now I'm just going through the rooting process again.
Edit: I'm not rooted again, as checked by 2 root confirmation apps. Now to try to get TB running and remove bloatware.
Edit 2: Great success! I got TB to work, bought PRO and have just frozen everything i dont need or dont use.

Hi all,
i rooted succesfully my device following this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2364980 in his first istance and today i do everything again with new version:
Odin_v3.09.zip (if don't have it already)
recovery-clockwork-6.0.3.7-serranoltexx.tar.zip
GT-I9195_RootKit_v2.zip
Rooting is OK but still no WiFi Tethering (both version): the net is visible but when try to access the devices go in waiting for minutes without connection (tried with other android phone, ipad and win7 pc).
Thanks in advance to the beneficent guy who want to answer me
Hi, i have rooted it that way too. And mine teethering works.
Sorry there must be another Problem. not rooting itselve
My tethering works too. Just used it to download a massive 1.5gb file over 4G.
Try wiping your cache and flashing the latest nightly?

Sorry for the noob question but what's "nightly"?
Oops my bad. Thought you mentioned that you flashed the custom ROM. The nightlies are of the custom ROM currently being developed by arco68, CM10.1.
Referring to the this post in first version there was some wifi issues, i guessed also in second.
Any other have save problem?
I have to repair my phone? :crying:

The link you pasted is for rooting. The nightlies is a cm10.1 custom rom thats being updated 'nightly' or atleast once a day. Your problem however is based on your firmware and not because of root access. Try to flash to CM10.1 (26-08-2013 version) and see of your problem still occurs.
You can find it over at the 'GS4 mini Android development' section. (sorry cant link you atm because of xda app.)

I'm not sure If you will lose data. Since I don't know if it'll format the cache /data folder and dalvik in the process.
If I for instance update my CM to a newer CM i will not lose my personal data (I do that through CWM recovery without wiping cache or dalvik), not sure if thats the same for stock to stock flashing (which you do through odin), but I believe you're safe.
Last but not least you can always flash back to the prerooted stock rom If ofc you have the firmware (with backup) or do the rooting process yourself which is fairly easy.
Or like whosat mentioned before, flash to cm10.1 (which imho is better than Samsung stock roms).

Yeah those could be the cause of the problem... Definitely not the apps that come from the Play Store though (Yahoo!, Google Play, Chrome).

I see now, perhaps mentioning debloating in your first post would be great!
The AllShare apps is the cause of your problem, like most AllShare plugins it uses the sharing functions of the phone like Wifi tethering and the other Samsung connectivities of which most of them is considered bloatware. Removing them on stock firmware will cause some programs to not work propertly as the system still thinks the application is installed (integrated into os) while you've deleted the system/app apk from your device.

Many thanks for this input, i'm trying to restore that 2 app with ES file manager but with no fortune:
- ControlShare Service was installed like a 3rd part app in /data/app
- FileShare Service return me "impossible to install"
I've also tried to brutally copy the 2 files in /system/app but it wants work (i noticed that in system/app there's a file named "AllshareFileShare.odex")
Can u plz tell me where r this 2 apk in your rom?
Thx

I know this is the most secure way but not the fastest flash, root, remove (and i don't know if every set and every data stay in its own place).
So if someone can spend 2 minutes for me i'll be very graceful
Solved!
re-flashed stock rom, re-rooted, re-debloated (this time keeping Allshare apps ).
What a mess...

GJ, that was the only way im afraid. Simply reinstalling system apps wont do the job. Good that eventually things worked out well for you.

I WAS WRONG!
Now i controlled every step and the guilty is the rooting procedure:
flashing stock rom -> ok
flashing rootkit -> ko
nothing else in the middle.
How it's possible this is a only mine problem?
Finally (after tens of attempts) i understood:
the smoked gun is in the right hand of avast (its firewall), even using white list method and (obviusly) not blocking any system app.
Is this a notorius fact?
