[Q] Need help since I'm new to Sammy - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

Earlier this week my Sensation 4g died. I bought a Note 2. Little did I know that there were issues with it that I and others have with it, ie: no easy immediate way to do app to sd for instance. Another thing I wanted was to be able to add or take away data from installed apps by connecting the phone to a computer via usb and accessing the files that way, which again doesn't happen without some work.
Since then I have rooted the phone (according to the download mode screen, which says: current binary and system status is custom.
I have left everything stock except for the rooting part and installed Superuser and SuperSU and then tried to run Titanium Backup (free) when it said 'could not access root using \something\something\su command".
I have tried several other apps and methods of trying to do what I want (from the first paragraph) but none have succeeded either due lack of documentation (and I didn't know how to do a certain step or fix something) or it just didn't work.
So where am I at now? I have factory reset my phone and am now honestly not sure where to go or what to do from here. I've Googled and Googled but nothing quite seems to be able to fix what I need and if it does then it has the lack of documentation and can't help me.
Any thoughts or guides or something that anyone could post/link to? Thanks.

If I'm not mistaken but kernels don't deal with being able to save apps to sd. I could be wrong since I don't dabble in android dev. Thanks though.

We need background... 1st of all...
What way did you use to root (Cf_auto_root, Stock-root injected, etc)?
Does your phone still have exynos_exploit or did your phone come with that "OTA Update" pre installed?
What SD card are you using?
What rom/kernal are you trying to run?
Most of the time, in this particular forum, its seems best to just ask what your trying to accomplish within the various rom/kernal thread...
Like lets say im on Stick injected rom/kernal without extsd2internalsd (apps2sd) setup and lets say I want to go to Jedi Master 9.... I would then go to Jedi Master 9 thread and ask for help on how to effectively apply that rom with ExtSd2internalsd support from my current setup, and wait for the OP or seniors to reply... also while "patiently waiting" I would read/search through the hundreds of pages looking for answers/insights to my particular process... if needed might go to my own root process thread and ask for advice on how to get to jedi master 9
Id be more than willing to help you here but need some background on your phones current status and end rom/kernal to provide an answer (to be sure I dont lead you awry

Thanks. I did answer that I am running everything stock at the moment, just rooted, no kernel or rom. I have an 8gb class 4 microsd card. My root method was cf auto root. I also stated what I was hoping to achieve also (in my first paragraph). Hopefully this helps.

Oh, if possible I'd like the easiest way to remove or disable system apps like chat on or some of the tmobile stuff. I tried a couple different methods with that too but couldn't quite get it all to work.
I tried the qtadb app but couldn't get my device to be seen by the program on the computer and i tried that app because I had no idea where to start with regular adb, its been a long time since i've done any of this stuff.

To remove or disable system apps I use root uninstaller, sometimes it won't delete system apps on the first try just exit the app go back and do it again second attemt will do, for your data problem I'll try root browser or root Explorer

Well it turns out you can download and install apps requiring root but they just wont run correctly, if at all. I know because after my factory reset, i downloaded and ran 2 root checker apps, both of which said I no longer have root or something. So now I'm just going through the rooting process again.
Edit: I'm not rooted again, as checked by 2 root confirmation apps. Now to try to get TB running and remove bloatware.
Edit 2: Great success! I got TB to work, bought PRO and have just frozen everything i dont need or dont use.

I've seen people mention using titanium backup to freeze the device manager or updater app. Something to that effect.

thanks but i don't have a clue what that means.
i installed Kies on my pc to try and find the download and "push" it through with Odin, but Kies tells me my firmware is good.
i have NO idea where to dl the newest OTA from T-Mobile and then i'd have NO idea how to push it with Odin.
help, someone????
Titanium backup is an app from the market. With it you can uninstall system apps, or simply "freeze" them, meaning they are still there but no longer allowed to run.
"Device management" is the system app that's notifying you of the available ota update.
So, to answer your original question, download titanium backup and use it to freeze device management in order to get rid of the ota notification.
All this assumes of course that you are rooted and running a custom ROM. If you aren't on a custom ROM, then I wouldn't understand your wanting to avoid the update, as it appears it doesn't affect your ability to root, and may not even unroot your device.

i wasn't trying to avoid it, i was originally trying to install it, but Clockwork wouldn't let me; a couple people in here tried to offer 'halfway' help, but stopped answering my questions, so i mainly just wanted to get rid of the nag, since the mod i flashed got me to 2.3.6 anyway.
turns out that Perfect Backup let me clear the Device Mgmt data, and that got rid of the nag. so i didn't have to pay for Titanium Backup (can't freeze stuff unless you pay for it).
so the resolution is that once i'd flashed to 2.3.6 the OTA was just in some kind of cache, i guess, and all i had to do was clear it.

i just went through the exact same problem. go get Deodexed KL1 (i think it's a stock ROM) and it'll do what the new update is going to do, flash you to 2.3.6.
flash the modem, too, with Odin (KL1 modem) and then find your Device Management 10.* and Clear the Data using Perfect Backup (free).
i was unable to get rid of that nag/notification until i did that.
there may be other ways of Clearing the Data for Device Mgmt - maybe in App Manager. In any case, when i cleared the data the nag was gone.

Flash Mr X's deodexed stock rom. the rom your device downloaded is designed to work with your phones stock recovery and not with clockwork mod. X's rom works with CWM.

[Q] Stop OTA for Samsung GS 2 on T-Mobile
Hello!
My wife has a rooted GS 2 with the stock ROM from TMO. I am concerned that the new OTA (T989VUVKL1)might break her root functionality, cause repeated update notification, or cause her phone to no longer work. Does anyone know the app or file I need to freeze or delete to stop the OTA from happening? At this point she is also getting the notification to update (eek!) At some point I will want to upgrade the ROM to the newest one assuming I can keep root access. Thank you for all your help and support!

"S-On?"

I rooted my Note2 and have root access, but I think I'm missing something... I reset my phone and the system apps reset themselves. On my Glacier you had to turn security off to keep it from happening, and I was wondering what needs to be done to prevent it on this device.
All I did was root, install cwm, then install Su. Does it have to do with deodexing? I'm unfimiliar with what it means and would appreciate some guidance in the right direction.

There is no such thing as S-on and S-off on Samsung devices as they already ship with an unlocked bootloader. If you are doing a factory reset on any phone, all of the system apps should be wiped as well, so I don't really understand your question.

Don't worry, I understand what you're talking about.
Started happening with the Galaxy S3 on T-Mobile as well since the most recent JB update
You "freeze" an app in Titanium Backup, and it freezes just fine, but after the very next reboot that app is back in action and active in the background. Very frustrating, I know.
The two apps I noticed this with were T-Mobile's My Account app and Zynga games (really??)
Here's the solution - uninstall the offending apps. That'll teach em!
Uninstalling works just fine, but for example when I install the older version of YouTube (which I prefer over the new) and restart my phone, the version it ships with is reinstalled.
Also, when I flash a zip that installs the apk into the system app folder, it gets wiped after a reboot.
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda app-developers app
I know that there were two files you had to remove to prevent reboots from reflashing stock recovery, I would imagine this is the same thing - problem is, I don't know what files to remove (I don't have the Note 2 yet so I can't go poking around to look for them)
But I am sure you can find/remove them.
This is why I stick with CM10, I can't stand the control T-Mobile and Samsung try to maintain on our devices
I can't find the info! BTW, the search function on the mobile app is not very good. Haha

ROOTing my phone, want to make sure a few things

Hello,
I'm thinking about rooting my phone (HTC One X 4.1.1, CID_102) and I want to make sure a few things:
1. I'm going to use this tutorial: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069904
Exactly as it says there.
Is it ok?
2. When a new update is released, how can I update my device with the root? I will keep using the stock rom, only with ROOT.
3. How can I backup all of my data? Including pics, SMS, whatsapp, app settings and information and etc.
4. Is there an option that when I start my device again after it was formated, it will download all of the previous apps? if not, then I need to make a list of all of my apps.. about 35 but still.
Thanks!
1. Great choice!
2. You need to flash stock recovery. And restore any system apps you've deleted.
Then update normally and you won't lose root.
3. Do a backup in ClockWorkMod recovery or whatever recovery you use. Transfer it to your PC afterwards for safe storage.
4. Download titanium backup and back up all your apps. Then transfer the backup to PC.

Thank you, I guess I will ask about it when there is a new update.
Can you help me with questions 3 and 4?
Well the steps are :
Unlock the bootloader
Flash a custom recovery
In that custom recovery is an option backup and restore, when you press backup it runs a complete nand backup of everything on the phone except the sdcard.
If you want to just backup parts like sms, whatsapp etc etc....then you can use titanium backup like TT said or another program called carbon. These apps allows you to backup just parts that you wantnto backup and restore after an update.
I always start with a clean install of all apps and stuff, it "feels" better to me. But that is a personal opinion

1. Freedom is an application that lets you (with root) to get stuff from applications that costs money (in-app purchase).
2. No, the CM10 has the latinme (if I'm ont mistaken) keyboard, that Android 4.2 has as stock, and it has swipe feature. In CM10 they put swipe in more langauges so I want to use it.
I think that if I'll install the GAPPS from CM10 then it will install this keyboard also. In order to do that, I just need to put the .ZIP file in my phone, and from the recovery install it like I installed SU?
Can I delete it later? and the gapps will update also from market (and not blocked like a pirated application)

This is just a warning.
Any app that allows you to download a paid app for free is classed as warez on XDA and is not allowed. You can not upload any app on XDA that is a paid app. The warez policy also includes trying to get around in-app purchases.
ok, sorry.
TT, I installed what you sent me, but for some reason the keyboard doesn't appear on Language & keyboard menu.
EDIT:
Didn't notice, it was installed but it doesn't swipe in my language, but in CM10's keyboard (at least for the Galaxy Nexus) it is.
Is there a way to put their keyboard on my phone?

Rooted my phone successfully through the procedure described by Chainfire, worked flawlessly, got SU installed. The purpose of the rooting was to get rid of bloatware that took a lot of memory, battery and space. Deleted all prescribed programs, restarted my note and that is where problems started. Obviously, I accidentally deleted something that is related to contacts, messaging and keypad to dial phone numbers. Tried to manually dial the number on the keypad, I got it frozen after inputting 3 numbers (area code) and then black screen appears with the error *Unfortunately, Contacts has stopped* and it goes to home screen. Same happening with messaging. Basically, I lost 2 of the most abilities of the phone to call out/in and send texts in/out. As recommended on some forums here, I cleaned data in Contacts and Contact storage, but it did not help.
I am brand new to this rooting stuff, but it went OK, I screwed somewhere on the step of deleting bloatware from the phone. Lost any idea and hope what to do...My phone is pretty useless now...
Phone data (if it is needed to get an idea what happened and how to fix it) :
Samsung Galaxy Note II SGH-T889VVLBMA3
Jelly Bean 4.1.2
Kernel 3.031-861899
Stock ROM
Device status - modified
Please, please, please HELP!!!
THANK You and Grateful!
Do you happen to know what apps you deleted? Actually it would be easier if you just get a log cat of the fc. An app like cat log will do the trick

You most likely deleted one of the contact system apps. It's usually better to freeze an app first (I use titanium backup) to see if there are any problems. If you have a custom recovery twrp or cwm you can flash a custom stock based rom that are usually already debloated. If not use odin and go back to stock and start over. Make sure to backup your essential files/pics first. If you odin back to stock everything on your internal storage will be lost.

I recall majority of Google apps like maps, search, earth, learning hub, movie, music, google+, chrome, news, yahoo news, chokoEURoe, magazines etc. I will try to run catlog and post the results here.
Thank You very much for replying to me!

I backed up everything to google servers through my gmail account, but it did not work, tried to restore it from there but it showed nothing was backed...I do not have custom recovery, so I am going with odin option then? Do I need something else in addition to odin, like original rom T889VVLBMA3? I backed up all my files to the computer HD, hopefully this time I will find files.
In odin does it matter what signature is showing in the top left corner of the screen - I saw T889V, Galaxy SIII , I3171. Do they indicate to which version of Galaxy this odin version was developed? My sorry for these obvious questions, but its better be safe than sorry (for me now). Also, I read on this forum that in addition to restore to stock rom it needs to be cache and factory reset done to get the phone back to *normal* mode and *official*. Do I need to do these as well?
Thank You a lot for providing guidance to me! Very much grateful!

Update 1.
Tried to download and install Catlog from google play, the download stuck at running line for about 10 minutes and then showed *Cannot download due to an error (927)* I guess need to go for a complete restore. What is your opinion?
THANK YOU!
Update 2. So I decided to go for a full recovery to original stock ROM T889_MTC_VVLBMA3 through Odin option v.3.07 It took about 8 minutes, but, Thanks God, it worked flawlessly and now I back to my factory shipped condition Note II
Thank You very much for participation and your advises, much appreciated!
Now I am debating with myself one question - do I need to go for another try of rooting? Major concern is that phone has too many stock applications that I do not like and will never use in m life. What would be your opinion on that matter?
Also, can you point me in right direction how to do it right way? Previously, I used Chainfire method and it worked nicely, should I go with it or there are another ways to do it (I just looking for rooting)?
And one more : there is a description how to root phone by technique from Mr. Robinson and there are links to files to be used with Odin (root66...), but any link that I used for downloading provided me me corrupted 7z archive. Do you know any other rights links to these files?
Thank you aain and best of luck to everyone!
Cheers!
I would recommend a custom rom. Jedimaster and tweaked are very popular here. Both are based off of the stock rom and are debloated. I would download goo manager and use the option to install custom recovery. This will install twrp recovery. Read up on how to use twrp. Its easy once you get familiar with it. In twrp you can make nandroids (backups) of your current rom and install others. Now that you know how to use odin and go back stock everything else should come easy. As far as root I always use odin. Checkout galaxynote2root.com there are great tutorials there and links needed for root and just about everything else.

INSTALL CUSTOM RECOVERY after you root the phone. Then - reboot and you'll see how it works. You should read upon the very basics of rooting/installing custom roms. Fundamental stuff. Jedi are good custorm roms, I prefer AOSP but you have to use gapps for those.
Download Jedi .zip file and put it on the external card (over 1G) navigate through custome rec, wipe cache/dalvik cashe /system; go back to main menu/install click on .zip file wherever you put it on your external card (preferred to internal) and you're done. I used exynos exploit one click root, and TWRP recovery. It's actually quite simple once go over this first time.
