NEED HELP FAST! Messed up the wife's EVO 4 G - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well now that root is available for the new Evo 4G and the wife wanted the Sprint bloatware removed I decided to root it. The rooting went fine, got SOFF, and was going to flash a new ROM. Added Titanium Backup and did a full backup, the put a new ROM on the SD card, and went into the bootloader, wipe everything and flashed the new ROM. Trouble is I can't reboot the phone, it just keeps going back to the boot loader screen. What do I do? She wants her phone and now I can't get it back to being a phone. I really need some help fast!

Run an RUU of the 4.24 software in PC36IMG, that will unroot it, set it back to stock, then re-root it.

How do I do that?

Seems the SD card is messed up. I took it out and neither my laptop or PC will read it and it had my Titanium backup on it. I have a bad feeling I'm really screwed. I was lucky, rooted my daughter's Evo 4G, no problem, and rooted my Evo 3D, no problem. But now I hose the wife's phone, I am so in the dog house, If I get this thing back to being a phone, I am not touching it again.

here is the ruu i bumped the thread lol was a ***** to find just fyi idk what you did sounds like you failed to flash the rom though... once you root you need to go to recovery to flash the rom not the bootloader also i suggest mikg great rom.
PS to get to recovery you need to go to bootloader scrool to recovery and hit power then you should be there

Thanks Guys! I've got her phone back!

I used toasts method back on the july 4th 1.47 full nand unlock and root through ADB, the proper way, anyway my volume buttons are broken, i am on ava v9 and would LOVE v10 but i cant update or do anything because if i do get into recovery through usb debugging i cant navigate bc my buttons are broken on the motherboard. I am looking to sell this phone in a few months and i cant sell it with a beta version rom you know what i mean. Anyway i would love to be able to flash roms without volume button use.
you could still use rom manager. to flash roms but why don't the buttons work did you drop it?
I don't know why you wouldn't be able to reroot and take your device back. get a new one and start over.

1. Not in warranty
2. I opened my phone numerous times and replaced the whole entire housing front and back, it's a brand new phone excpet for the battery and mobo.
3. How can i flash roms without recovery, i never trusted rom manager so i never put any interest into looking at it. I always used Amons....

okay, now after i do that ill be stock and everything, from that point! can i flash roms at all without the use of my volume up and down buttons or no
nope. rom manager or bust. i only trust amon, but you gotta do what you gotta do right?
yeah same here...okay, so with rom manager, i flash a rom how, and when i do if i want to flash another i have to keep taking the sprint update and then reroot and then flash the rom i want, lol im so confused right now, rom manager i dled and i have to install clockwork and im not a fan of it as i have never used it and dont know how
Relax. ROM manager is pretty good now.
1. Flash clockwork recovery
2. Put update rooted Rom of choice on root of SD card.
3. Install Rom from SD ( its an option)
4. When prompted make backup of current Rom. Then wipe data and cash.
5. Restore with titanium.
It's not hard. And its better than when it first came out. You can also flash amon ra if you prefer.
I have never had a problem.
Can you fix the button?
im not sure, i saw in the previous post to flash roms with rom manager bc its gotten better, this is able to be done without the volume buttons??? And also how can i use amon without volume like you mentioned
No buttons working? Well you are gonna have to use clockwork. There are many video tutorials. Good luck but I gotta say if you rooted via toast this is no problem.

yeah i defff did the right root not that unrevoked shiiit, i have full root and nand unlock via toast, so i just have to deal with clockwork instead of amon thats my only downside oh yeah and having to manually change volume in settings lol
I used unrevoked 321 forever. It's completely nand unlocked. S off also. Everyone should relax on the whole toast vs unrevoked argument. The only thing I read that worried me was losing my wimax keys. I did a nandroid just to be safe. Not really sure what you would have to flash to lose those? Maybe radios but ill stick with the one I got.

[Q] UnRoot successful... Except for Market

Good morning all. I unRooted my phone by running the RUU file on my computer with HTC Sync running, and it worked just fine. The only problem that I have now is that my Market does not work. I will try to download an app, new or previously purchased, and it will not download them. It says "Starting Download" and a few seconds later it will pop up in my Notification Bar that the download was unsuccessful.
I used the RUU posted in *OFFICIAL* RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.29.651.5_Radio_2.15. 00.09.01_NV_1.77_CNV_rel by Whosdaman.
Am I missing something? Should I try it again with an older RUU file?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I posted in the wrong forum, please let me know. I figured it was relevant here, as it has to do with unRooting and such. LOL
settings - applications - market
then clear cache
I tried that trick already. Also, when I unRooted, I had the 1.8ish version of the Market. I tried all the tricks to get the updater to automatically update the Market, but it never did. I resorted to finding a vending.apk and doing it myself. I'm not sure what this does, but I also did the dialing of ##786#.
Sorry for leaving that out of the OP, it's been a long night at work and I'm ready for sleepy time. I try my hardest to figure things out beforehand, because I don't want to bother y'all with piddly little questions. I just couldn't find the answer for myself this time.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a noob. How do you do ##data#? Do I dial ##3282#?
strange that i just did the same thing and my market works
That's not strange, it sucks! LOL! Well, I'm glad to hear that it worked out for you brother. Hopefully we can get mine fixed, as I have to take it into the Sprint Store on Monday. They already know that my phone was rooted, so they told me if I had to bring it in again just to unRoot it. It's gonna look funny that I've had a phone since June, and it's not personalized in any way? LOL
reinstall gapps
I can't post a link as its proprietary.
but search google gapps .apk you'll find it.
Then clear the cache again if that don't work.
If that don't work, then your out of options.
LOL! I'll try it out. I appreciate all the help y'all.
Hello IAmTheTrueUI, I have a question for you. What method did you use to root your EVO and using this RUU did you get s-on in your hboot screen? I rooted using unrevoked 3.2.1 and it gave me the permanent s-off. I also used the RUU to unroot(just want to be able to in case I need to take it into Sprint) and everything was stock except I still had s-off. I've been reading about the s-on tool from unrevoked, but it says you may lose root forever and I don't want to try it if I won't be able to root again.
This is for anyone that would like to answer: If I use the son tool from unrevoked can I get root back? Has anyone tried it and been successful in rerooting their phone? Thanks all and much appreciated.

yes i have mutiple times after you flash the son tool you can just run unrevoked again and gain root once again
EDIT: this is what it says verbatim on the unrevoked wiki "Once your phone is S-ON, you may lose root permanently if you install an official update "
I used the unrEVOked 3.2.1 as well. Loved being rooted. Can't wait to fix this, take it back to the store real quick, then come back home and root again. LOL

you did flash the s-on tool right?
No, no I did not. I didn't think I had to unless I used the unrEVOked Forever method. Am I still able to do this if need be?
I just unrooted yesterday using the s-on tool and PC36IMG to bring to stock and it worked great with no issues. I just decided to go stock for a while until the new update rolls out. As matter of fact that was my second time using that method because I wanted to be sure it would work if I ever had to bring my phone in to Sprint. Good luck getting it fixed!
I truly hate to ask, but could you explain that method to me? I'm about ready to Root my phone again and just flash a ROM that just looks like a stock ROM.

Don't worry about the market. They're not going to use it for anything in the store and you can always reroot and get it back into working order.
It's actually good that you leave it look not personalized. Just last week I walked in with my phone overheating and rebooting. After their guy spent an hour looking at my phone, he said he could hold onto it even longer and "probably fix it" by doing a factory data reset. You'll be able to sidestep this by just telling them that you already did and that's why it looks like it does now. In fact, you could actually try that now to see if it makes your market problem go away.

I used the method in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780141
There is a method there if you did not use Unrevoked but what I did was just download both of the files listed there to the root of my SD card>booted into recovery and flashed the s-on zip>used the power off option then booted into hboot and saw it said s-on>allowed it to load the 2.2 PC36IMG and it was done. I ran the lasted update after it was completed. I'm no expert so I hope this was helpful for you.

[Q] Has rooting changed at all?

Ever since I first rooted my Evo back in June or so, I havn't paid much attention to the instructions for rooting. Back then, I went through it using adb and a different RUU, etc. Now, with programs like Unrevoked, it seems like a much easier and faster process.
I'm thinking about taking my phone back to Sprint to get the speaker replaced. I know how to fully UN-root, but just wondering if when I get the phone back home, can I get full root again with nand unlocked just by using something like Unrevoked?
Like I said, I hadn't been paying much attention to rooting, and the last issue I really read about was when (froyo?) first came out and you had to root by using some Adobe program, which seemed like a bit of a hassle.
Unrevoked does it all.

Yea, you can. It couldn't be easier.
Unrevoked is so simple!!
Alright, thank you guys very much!
The reason I had asked was, I knew on the Moment, apps like the 1-click root method didnt fully root the phone, so some roms couldn't be flashed properly. Just wondering if that was the case for the Evo also.

Menu>Settings>SD & Phone Storage>Factory Reset
let me repeat my question, and get more specific. I need to wipe all data off my phone, everything.
Then I need to get the OS back on it.
Can someone tell me if you can do this without root, I need to completely clear all partitions AFAIK and then get a new CLEAN UNHACKED OS onto my phone.
Factory reset is not enough
RUU is not enough (alone anyway)
I need to get the flashable regions of my phone totally clear of malicious code.
bump for edit for previous
I don't think you have any options without root...only other option without root is boot into bootloader and clear storage.
For curiousity, what did you do that you need to undo and how could you have pushed "malicious code" onto other partitions without root?
unless you work for HTC or know somone that does, i thnk you are pretty boned, even contacting them directly all ive gotten is the usual "it cant be done" line so ....just wait for the hboot to get hacked and do it then i suppose..
What Android version are you on and your phone is currently rooted correct?
He stated in original post that it is NOT rooted.
4.24 gb EVO
hacked as hell
i think it was rooted before not to my knowledge, and flashed. also calendar exploited via google, I hope i can get some help outside the dev forum, because I i know they dont like questions there, thats why im posting here instead.
cant clean it now that i have OTA'd to GB.
I am finding alot of cool app engines along my trials and tribulations. makes me wish I had not stopped working in security several years back.
Someone gonna give a guy a hand? I am as trustworthy as they come if you are worried about anything getting out and about.
If it was rooted before, go into the bootloader and check if it says S-ON or S-OFF. If it's S-OFF, you can flash a recovery and now you're rooted again.
If it's S-ON, no, you can't do anything right now.
yeah im screwed
i just love it when my camera and speaker come on and monitor me all day and night long.

Sigh...ok...I'll bite. Why do you think your phone is doing this? What evidence?
And does the tin foil mess up your hair?
i watch the logs, i see the mic and or cameras come on, i see the filesys filling where I cant go see it because im not root, i see the traffic as it xmits it from local host to local host, i see the traces of the encryption keys and stunnels. This is only one instance.
I hope there is someone around here who has something more to offer than the people outside the dev forums, im getting killed following the rules.
So let me get this straight and my apologizies for sounding confuzed becasue every reply has been all over the place and has been of no real help to you yet..
Your on GB version 4.24 correct? Previously Rooted without you knowing? Your trying to get back too 100% stock as well? I hope I'm following this so far.
1st, the easiest way, download Root Checker from the Market and that will tell you right off the bat if your rooted or not. If thats not possible, enter bootloader as stated before and verify S-Off at top of screen. If so, flash Amon_Ra Recovery (rename to PC36IMG.zip if not already and place on root of SD Card). Enter bootloader and let it scan, apply update and from there you can do what you need to do. If it says S-On but you know your rooted, go to xHausx Auto Root guide, download the Froyo 3.70.651 Stock rom and place on Root of Sd Card named PC36IMG.zip, enter bootloader, let it scan and apply update, that will take you too 100% stock Froyo with hBoot 2.10 and you can apply GB update if desired or root with whatever method of your choice.
Once again, sorry if this is not what you were wanting but its irritating when you get the run around and people talk about tin foil hats and ridiculous stuff...and agreed, very hard to follow rules when most replies are worthless.

Read 1 post below yours, only way to figue out how to help is to know the details. Good 2 cents though.
I will give it a go, after I upgraded OTA it made me s-on, so i think im just screwed now.
I tried the ruu to go back but as you know it says too old files etc
i imagine this will do the same but i will try anything once, the guys at sprint gave me the go ahead to do whateever i need to do to try to backrev this thing, and if i brick it they will replace it so im up for ANYTHING PEOPLE
If you were originally s-off, the ota shouldn't have updated hboot. It can't turn you s-on, unless you reverse it yourself first..
Which means you were always s-on, and currently there is no way to assist you.
lets start over. are u S-OFF or S-ON? that will determine what ur options are.

There isn't anything that can be done for you at the moment. You said your s-on which means your not rooted which in turn means your bootloader is locked and you can't install a recovery and install the files you need to fix your problem. So I would call Sprint and tell em your device is being defective.

If you have a card reader you can flash a ruu through the bootloader also why would you want to unroot completely? Based on your info you wouldn't be able to root if you unrooted because Unrevoked requires usb connectivity

You can definitely just unroot it and leave it S-OFF by doing what evo4gnoob said. Copy a stock ROM PC36IMG.zip file to the root of your sdcard using a card reader connected to your PC (If you go to the 1st link under "My Links" in my signature, there are 3 you can use at the bottom of that post) and rename the file to just "PC36IMG.zip". Put the card back into your device, and boot into Bootloader mode (hold volume down while pressing the Power button), and it should read the stock ROM. Then choose to install the update, and the device will be fully reset and back to stock.
By the way - unless you cancel your service first, the device will still be linked to your account. If you want to get rid of that information, you'll have to do a full data reset using an EPST code. There should be a thread around here somewhere that will give you the proper code (you'll need your MSL code).

MSL Reader from the Market will tell you what it is, but you need root to use it, so you'll have to flash Superuser, if you really want to get rid of your phone info (which is probably a good idea).

But if you let the phone reboot and re-activate, it'll just link back to your number, so if you don't want it to do that, you'll have to turn it off and cancel the service to it.
thanks again!
