Hello all - searched but apologize if this is a double post!
Searched this forum about a solution to low memory but everything is always rooting...
This is very easy and works with HTC Gingerbread 2.3.3! Apparently there are no downsides so it's a win win situation! ;-)
Enjoy on your own responsibility...

As far as I know, this is NO magic new solution. It's been around longer, and just tells your phone to install all new apps to SD card (if the app supports it) in the default Android 2.2 (Froyo) and 2.3 (gingerbread) apps2sd fashion. It just automated what you could otherwise do manually from Settings/Applications menu.
It is true that apps2sd does work better in 2.3 than in 2.2. Supposedly it also moves lib/*.so files now

Definately an improvement over stock HTC Gingerbread 2.3.3! You are now able to move apps to SD that were not possible before... Exg Flashlight and Handsent sms. So it is absolutely worth a try if you don't want to root but still need some more space...
New or not - It's still good... ;-)

I somehow thought Froyo would resolve the issue - but it's far from the case. I'm still regularly seeing the out of storage space message, and it's highly frustrating. It's just ruins a near impeccable phone!
If I was to root it, would I be able to use the rooted move to SD cards app to force the non-movable apps? I read that the ADB method of forcing apps to move can corrupt the memory card? Either way - are there any solutions to this??
If you root and s-off, you can also modify the mtd partitions on you device, increasing the size of the data partition .......

Sounds like hard work. If I was to root, can I use an app2sd app to force all my apps to SD? is this the same as the ADB froyo method?
If you rooted you could use apps2sd+ you would defo reclaim some space over the native froyo move to sd but i dont know how much, might not be an awfull lot.

Like other dude said s-off and mtd partition, its not that hard but its worth it if you have alot of apps.

Actually, it is an awful lot if you root and use apps2sd+.
I initially rooted just to use Market Enabler. But I took the plunge and installed LeeDroid's ROM which uses apps2sd.
With my usual number of apps, I used to have about 30 or 40 MB free in internal memory. Now, I have between 90 to 100 MB free.
Because of this, I install more apps than I need and I still have over 60 MB free.
With A2SD+, youll only lose internal storage with the data from apps (Google Earth, HTC Sense Contacts storage) and until you fill your ext partition obviously. Its ridiculously easy to root these days anyway.

We could do with a dummies guide to mtd partitioning. It ought to become the norm but right now it's a bit intimidating. If I get time to read up I will give it a go.
I've been struggling with this issue many times. I used the ADB method to avoid rooting, and it works good. But it's still not unlimited.
Recently I did a factory reset. Now I'm installing the apps I really need (with adb method) and I have 95 MB free. But i'm expecting the same problems in a few months when apps are building up.
I want to root only for Apps2SD(+), but I think the easiest way is flashing a ROM with APPS2SD already cooked in?
can Apps2SD+ not be installed on an existing rooted rom? there are a few threads about sd crads becoming corrupt with the method. has that been resolved yet?
Yes it can be added on with a mod. And yes the issues with sd card corruption have now been fully fixed.
Phil
I recently unbricked my Desire and upgraded to Froyo, but now whenever I try to install some apps my device reboots when it gets to the "Installing" phase. I have figured out that this is due to the fact that the SDK requires apps which need access to system resources to be installed on the device rather than on the SD card which is the Froyo default.
It seems this is a problem with rooted Droid X variants as well, but it is solved by installing a new ROM. Is that the easiest way to fix this, and can anyone point me to a stable Sense ROM which has the WiFi hotspot capability?
Thanks
Every sense rom has hotspot, there is a nice sticky in development with all the roms listed. Look for yourself what you like.

To resolve Desire's memory issue and enable the upgrade to Gingerbread, we will cut select apps from the release. Look for status updates starting next week. We apologize for any confusion.

I'm afraid we have heaps of these threads already
our suggestion is to cut the crap (like quick office) and other stuff that is available on the market, and i'd suggest pushing stuff like stocks to htc hub so its optional not forced
Hmmm...
1. Just remove all apps, which available in Android market, we can download them for ourselves.
2. Several live wallpapers can be also removed, for example waveform, spectrum,VU meter, Many, etc.

Moving HTC apps to the Hub is a very good idea and one that HTC should really think of themselves
Any update is good, devs just need the base, im sure we will make some uber ROMS off their "release"

gets rid of the junk that the average joe or jane doesn't want too...
live wallpapers can be moved there too and installed when you wish (they could of course leave one default one perhaps)
flahplayer plugin its pretty big as well, not needed anymore.
Guys, are you giving advices to htc devs that reading here? lol
i posted my thoughts on the fb page and tweeted but i still doubt they read...
i think the problem will be what can they remove without the majority of people noticing and/or confusing the really basic of users.
like they won't be able to remove facebook without another outcry (some people probably don't know how to use market?)
OTA Update After Rooting
I just Rooted my Desire now I am running GingerVillan 2.5.
I enabled A2SD making ext3 partition of 512 MB and 32 MB Swap on SD card.
However as now the news just came out that There will be gingerbread for Desire
so as I made Full System Image using Nandroid backup, will it be safe to restore that Image and get OTA update when it is available.
They should show a dialog windows after the first reboot following the update and ask if the user want download from the market the missing app, flash player, facebook, maps, youtube...selecting the apps to download..like cyanogenmod does after the first installation
the problem is that in some country some apps are not avalilable in their market..
but..i don't think they will do this..because after removing and restalling that apps will lost its data, setting, preferences ecc..So probably they will just remove some of their app, wallpapers, weather animation, ecc (separate download on htc hub for example, in case of sense 2.1 )

personally I'd say just run the RUU of either the Froyo or wait for the GB RUU to come out and run that to get the update, and/or wait for a pre-rooted GB image and flash that...

Seriously, spare yourself the hassle and stay on the custom ROM. The stock Gingerbread won't be a revolution anyway and a2sd will come more handy like you have it now. If there will be any updated libs, ROM devs here will integrate them anyway, so you'll just flash a updated GingerVillan.
Apparently I can't post this in the development forums cause I have less than 10 posts
Anyways, I've S-offed my desire, partitioned my SD card, flashed the newest Leedroid Sense Rom, and after installing Handscent (the only app I've installed so far) I am un-able to install anything else as my phone gives me an out of space error. This Rom came with a whole bunch of apps I didn't use before (switched from Oxygen because I wanted the new sense)
How can I move all those apps to the SD card?
Also, anyone know where I can get the Sense 3.0 dock with the ring? I love that!
Thank you!
P.S Please don't flog me! lol. I did so much reading my eyes are square now and it's possible I may have missed this being asked and answered

don't worry there is a lot to read, can be very
1. Have you tried clearing the cache and data of Market in Manage Applications? I've found sometimes deleting data of 'Download Manager' and 'Updater' works too, basically anything linked with market. Keep trying until the Market decides to download again.
2. Apps should be installed to the SD card by default if you partitioned your card directly. Use Quick System Info PRO (free) to check, assuming your market is working by then, it'll show how much space is being used on each partition. Keep the apps "on the phone", no need to manually "move to SD", as they are fooled into being installed on the ext partition. App data will still take up internal memory, the FAQ linked below explains it very well.
3. Install the Sense 3.0 addon pack on the first page, flash via recovery. I've not tried it myself as I read that it can cause the phone to be very laggy.
Hope this helps. There's a very good FAQ and mod thread linked on every page of the Leedroid thread if you need more help, i've found them the most useful.
I have finally found some time to root my desire. After rooting will use the device for a while then will think about custom ROM.
I wanted to know,
1) What are the immediate things to do after rooting my HTC Desire?
I was thinking...
- remove google maps app
- remove gmail app
- remove facebook app
- remove youtube app
- .... .... .....
don't know what are the bloatware on Desire... just need to remove and cleanse it
Edit:
Also wanted to know, what apps can be installed to use after rooting which will enhance usage of my HTC Desire.
i remember only one app - Titanium Backup
2) Need suggestions for more apps ??
Glad to hear your intentions too many people run into trouble after not reading the info on here after rooting...........I was one
I think the purpose of rooting a phone is to install custom rom.. you can also play with stock rom, but that doesn't give you a lot of "fun" yet !
Sad to see only 2 replies which were non informative
I finally rooted my desire.
The unrevoked tutorial helped but, i never got the 5th option of Hboot USB. So had to read some threads and gave it a go by installing the USB drivers and then running the unrevoked.
after rooting, i installed few apps
Titanium Backup
SystemAppRemover
My Backup Pro
Adfree
Then, took backups using Titanium and My Backup.
Next used Adfree, though it says it blocks the ads... it doesnt... anyone want to give inputs for this ?
regarding apps to remove, i need inputs so that i can remove only apps which will not cause issues. My primary criteria is to free up phone memory as much as i can.
regarding the ROM, i have a 4 GB SD card, i was planning to go for a 8 GB and then install ROM. Can anyone tell me with 8 GB is the a drop of performance ?
