Are you able to get into Clockword Recovery?
either via rom manager or by keeping update.zip on your sd card rebooting into recovery and hitting flash update.zip from sd card....
If you can get to the clockwork mod I think it's pretty easy from there if I recall....
BUt the issue was something like if you tried to go to CWM (Clockwork) on the regular stock release w/ root access it wouldn't read the update.zip cause it's unsigned or something? I don't know
How far have you gotten? WHich guide have you tried following? Upon what do you recieve errors?
I don't know that the method I used aug of last year is still advised or not so I don't really want to suggest direction quite yet

Hi, I recently joined the world of root with my Evo 4G. I rooted via the latest unrevoked 3 and also unrevoked forever (s-off). After completing this process I switched my recovery file back to a PC36IMG file and applied the OTA update. It seemingly corrupted my Root until I updated to the new SuperUser zip (2.3.6.1) from Superuser 2.1. Note: I updated to the new Superuser app via sd card recovery flash after ota. All works wonderful.
The problem comes into play when I tried to do the same for my friends phone. The root went well as well as the forever (s-off). In error I updated his superuser app via the same method before applying the ota update, and now the update just fails everytime I try to install. I have tried several fixes via reading different post with similar issues but none have the exact problem. PLEASE HELP!

Well you made two very big rookie mistakes, you used the OTA update and you posted in the Dev section instead of Q&A. You shouldnt ever post anything in the dev section unless it is a ROM or a kernel or something like that, some people here seem to take it personal. Since it's your first post its ok though.
As far as the OTAs, Never flash them. Devs will post them so they can be dissected, and parts of them scavenged, but that is the only thing they are good for. Just wait for someone to post a rooted copy of it and flash that instead.
To fix his phone flash sprint lovers via fastboot/hboot and you should be all set. It contains everything you need.

+1 on this
THX FOR YOUR HELP! It's really good to know you have a community of people willing to help a new guy, I really appreciate it.
The sprint lovers rom looks good. I haven't flashed a rom before and would rather stick with the stock rom for my friends phone for now and just fix my mistake at this moment. Given that I updated my phone successfully I cant seem to understand exactly how I got off track with his. The only difference that I am aware of is the fact that I updated mine with superuser 2.1 installed and attempted to update his phone while 2.3.6.1 was installed.
If that difference is the culprit I've tried to flash back to superuser 2.1 and it seem impossible. What can I do to get back on track. thanks again in advance.
oh I will post in the apropriate area next time
Hi!
I have a Motorola Milestone with Android 2.1 and wanted to upgrade to 2.2 or 2.3.
I installed it a 2GB micro sd card.
So, after googling a lot and watched lots of videos about how to do this upgrade, I was able to root my phone and install Rom Manager. After Rom Manager was installed, I ran the "ClockworkMod Recovery", selected my phone model and it showed that the process was succesful.
After that, the first step I wanted to do prior to upgrading was to backup the current rom using the Rom Manager, but after I hit "Backup current rom", it restarts the phone, shows the exclamation icon along with the phone icon and it sits forever and nothing happens. It shows nothing but the exclamation and phone icon, no messages of what is happening, nothing at all.
I had manually to press the power button in order to reboot it.
(I read in a post that redoing the clockworkmod recovery again would do the trick, but the problem persists).
What could be happening with the rom backup process?
If that issue is solved, I would appreciate if you recommend me which android version would be the best for my specific model: 2.2 or 2.3 and which should be the apropriate guide I would follow in order to upgrade my phone's android.
Thanks in advance!

I do not understand you because there is an official 2.2 update download by Motorola Software Update tool
so why to root etc and about Rom Manager was a bad idea to use it too bad because that's nice device
now use this thread to return to stock rom if this is not working return it to the shop/service
also a collection of roms for Milestone here

Thanks for your reply ruscan.
The phone is still working without problems with Android 2.1. I just wanted to update it to 2.2 or 2.3 to be able to install applications on my SD card since this is not possible with 2.1.
I'll research about updating it with Motorola Software Update tool, but if you recommend me to stay in 2.1 I'll do it
Thanks a lot.

Android 2.2 is first version to include support to move apps to sdcard so update it to official 2.2 also try a custom rom based on Cyanogenmod/ MIUI if you want but if you don't have enough experience with flashing is better to stay on stock rom at this time (I suppose you never flashed a new rom on your phone)
If you want to stay on 2.1 then install an app like app2sd or other from Market
well, to answer your question your first flash/update should be Froyo- it's good enough also this is official update so no risk there ...then experiment others but read a lot about and choose a rom with detailed instructions also use a laptop on battery to upgrade if something is wrong when flashing you are entering a lot of troubles

I recommend that you upgrade to 7.2.0 CyanogenMod ... in this issue "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=941346" and here's a guide on how to do it from your stock rom .. "http://www.mrmuh.com/2012/01/update-a-motorola-milestone-from-motorola-firmware-to-cyanogenmod-7/" ..
Thanks for your replies!
Well, I executed the Motorola Software Update and my Milestone was updated to 2.2.1 and now I'm able to move apps to the SD card.
It is running without any problems, that's great
I'll wait for some days to see how my phone goes with this Android version and decide if I stay there or look forward to upgrade to Cyanogen mod.
Just a last quick question (not related to this original post), this 2.2.1 still has the original apps tab at the bottom of the screen. How can I replace it with the new launcher that Froyo is suppossed to have?
Thanks again for your help!

Hello Everyone,
I have a VK700 and I totally screwed myself up lol.
So I originally had the device rooted, I dont remember how I did it, just that it was rooted a while ago.
So as some of you may know the Lollipop update came out and because I was rooted the update just kept failing at every try.
So after doing some reading I unrooted my device (not my best idea) and tried it again, only to have it fail again.
I was able to download the OTA update to the tablet and save the file to my pc in the hopes that I can somehow extract or make it flashable so that I could possibly root and then sideload or somehow flash it manually.
I have done numerous google searches only to find they don't actually show how to extract the files from the OTA update.
Any help is much appreciated, I would love to get this device running lollipop.
Also I have no clue on how to flash my recovery to TWRP or CWM and ideally I would like to so that I can make this process a lot simpler.
update
So I successfully re-rooted the device with LG One Click Root found on these forums (yay me)
Hi guys, been following this awesome community for a while now. I got a OnePlus One and I managed to unlock/root it thx to a thread on this forums (even if I'm not that "pro" with phones), but now I have my father's Xperia M (which has never been unlocked/rooted/flashed or anything) that is updated to Android 4.3 and I need help on how to proper install a custom ROM on it (I'm interested in the ArchiDroid one in particular). I don't like Sony's stock ROM, it's acting badly on some things (video recording for example) and in general it just sucks imho, so I want to upgrade to a custom Lollipop one (ArchiDroid). Can someone kindly explain me all the initial steps I have to take to, at least, install a custom recovery on the phone (possibly the TWRP since I used it for the OPO aswell)? Do i need to unlock the bootloader or something? Thx a lot!
Yes, u need to unlock your bootloader.U can do it through fastboot mode.Detailed information is available on Official Sony's Developer world page. Then flash custom recovery like cwm or twrp. Finally download the zip file and start flashing it.
Yep I managed to do all the stuff just yesterday, but thx anyway! Although it was not easy AT ALL, took me all day and was just a nightmare lol. The phone went immediately in bootloop after unlocking the bootloader, so I had to flash an appropriate firmware with flashtool, and I even had a problem at the very end of the process while trying to install the ROM itself (I choosed the official stock CM 12.1 nightly btw), because CWM was giving a stupid error. Thank god a guy here on the forums reported that CWM has problems with some SDs and posted a method to solve them all (by doing a total format of the SD with a program called SDFormatter).

yes, cwm recovery for now is not good for daily use. because they still have old commit. i suggest you to change to TWRP recovery, try look at here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61626285&postcount=1 we've got official support for this recovery:laugh:
Hello everyone! Some time ago I rooted my phone + used custom Leedroid ROM. Unfortunately I forgot how did I do that and right now I am expiriencing some problems with my phone. I would love to update my phone. I am considering to change the ROM too. Right now my phone uses android 7.0 so i would like to update that. I have the TWRP recovery installed but probably outdated version.
Could anyone help me please to get through this without my phone getting messed up? I am little bit lost in these kernel, ROM and recovery words.
I can provide any information required about the phone.
Don't open questions in the rom development section, has nothing to do here.
1) update TWRP (plenty of tutorials on how to do this)
2) download ROM of choice
3) flash the ROM in TWRP
Edit: answers in your other thread.
