[Q] It's truely WILD! Help guys - Wildfire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone.
First of all, I have to apologize for posting a new thread; I still haven't reached 8 posts, so just had to start a new one.
I'm having my Wildfire around a month, and I was really avoiding getting close to Android Technical Stuff or similar things; but it's almost 4 days that I'm trying to Upgrade the phone to move to Gingerbread.
Believe it or not, I've almost downloaded 750 MBs of data! and reading lots of tutorials, but still getting to nowhere. Probably a part is that I'm afraid the phone goes bricked and losing it is a pain in the ass for such a dummy in case of Android!
I'm pretty sure all the driver are correctly installed, nothing with a yellow Triangle (Thanks God!) in DveMan.
------------
When tryin to gain S-OFF using Revolutionary, it shows a message like the attachment down there:
"Your device: buzz with HBOOT 1.01.0002 is not supported this time. Press almost.... "
While I've read it works fine with versions later than 1.01.x. Do I really need to downgrade it? I just need a pro advising me to do that, cause no one likes a damaged phone or help me out if there's another option..
After first trials, I learned to anticipate the methods not working! Now I'm such an Iron Man to the failures BTW, I definitely appreciate your help with this. OQ

You have to downgrade to 1.01.0001 in that case, unfortunately. There is a guide here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132028
Yes, you have to download 140MB again, unfortunately.

"Wildfire Root, S-OFF
Man, was that complete index your work? That's a huge content. Good job, that was really comprehensive.
No problem, I guess I'll have to buy some more gig$ before the internet subscription finishes! I gotta download that.
Thanks a lot.

lol, it turned that huge when I tried to make it as comprehensive as possible, as you stated. I should have reserved 10 posts, so to make 1 point in 1 post, but I guess its too late. (And I didn't reserve posts because it started out as just a Custom ROMs List, nothing else)
Thank you though.

Well, that's much better since scrolling up & down through posts can sometimes be confusing; in case some other users may interrupt the process.
P.s. I gotta get back soon with more questions

OMG I need help upgrading

Ok well I stumbled upon this forum in search of a way to fix my 8525. My problem was that the media player on my phone wont recognize the memory card. I upgraded from the Cingular wireless operating system to the AT&T version. I see that you guys have a WM6 version and hopefully that would solve my problem along with the bugs in WM5.
I had no idea I would be so overwhelmed by technology. I really hope this means Im just out of the loop and not that Im getting old.
I downloaded the file from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=317952
but I dont have a program to decompress it. So I downloaded winrar from download.com and now windows still says it doesnt know what program it is and wont open it.
Can some one please give me a step by step on how to install WM6 for my Cingular 8525. Also, which version should I use? There seems to be many different versions up and they all have their own thread. As long as it will play my mp3s and have support for a 2 or 4gb micro sd
I swear Im really not retarded but I just dont have time to research all this myself.
Thank you so much for your help!

How old are you
Mrvanx guides is what you want do a quick search and you'll find it.
yeah, we don't have time to SEARCH FOR IT FOR YOU either. Sometimes you have to sacrifice.. lol .. that's funny 'I dont have time .. ' lol .. well .. MAKE time or brick your phone.
if you don't have time to read up, then you shouldnt upgrade your phone. since you definately need to read up and do research, start with the wiki.

Thank you for your help. telling me what to search for was a huge help. I had no idea where to start. Im surprised how unhelpful people on this forum are to new guys trying to figure it out. They all say to search but dont give any direction.
By atleast telling me to search for Mrvanx guides I found them and I got it done. I now have Black Satin on my phone. Im not all that happy with the media player and the phone will randomly freeze up using Black Satin. Is there a better OS to use? I also really dont like that it doesnt have voice dial.
Jim
random freeze could be due to application you've installed has issues with WM6. just by wm6 black satin itself, does your phone freeze too?
The best place for you to start is the places below my signature. The WIKI first, since you've a lot a learning to do. Then Mr. Vanx Upgrade Guides; follow the directions carefully, don't take any shortcuts and you'll be flashing ROMs like an expert in no time. If you follow any of these forums for long you'll also see a great deal of frustration from folks who spend a great deal of time answering new threads on old questions that are already answered in the WIKI and just need to be searched (hence, your previous replies....)
Best wishes
Thank you for your help.
I used Mr Vanx upgrade guide to get Black Satin installed. I will read the Hermes WIKI and Wiktionary next time I have a few hours to kill.
The freezing seems to have stoped after a few soft resets but I am really not happy with the Media manager. My main motivation for doing all this was because I really wanted a stellar media player. On my WM5 version media player it stoped regonizing my memory card and the only way I could play music was to go through file explorer and play them each individually. Even the media player in WM6 wont recognize my card. Its a brand new card. grrrrr
I have gotten countless error messages. It will also just randomly stop playing. You name it!
"The titles associated with this playlist no longer exsist" - a new message I just got
its just so fustrating

Bapski;
Was killing some time here at the hospital. My colleagues were really getting me frustrated, so I thought i'd spend some time here at the forum.....don't know it that was a wise decision........
I will say however, that I spent the first several weeks on this forum just reading threads and the WIKI. I was terrified to post, fearful of a flame. What I did learn during that time of observation and reading is that not too many people do it, and I saw how many of the mods got (and continue to get) frustrated at the lack of willingness of new members to take the info that is here in the forum and help themselves. I've just passed 100 posts but I don't think any of them was a request for help. Don't need much help as long as I can read....
Where are you loading your programs too? The mem card or the device itself? I have Satin and no lock up issues but I think the low memory is what is locking your device up. Also you can check Black sating website and he has a file cab with Cybertron Voice dial and also for Cybertron Voice command.
Jimbo69NY;
One thing for sure is that you will need a good deal of time when it comes to upgrading, flashing, etc. Not just the learning process, but the inevitable bugs and stumbles along the way. Especially at the beginning you need to make sure everything is done right (The Upgrade Guides help here as well as having Hard SpL installed). But this process does take time and if you don't have the time to spend, you're risking making your phone a brick. Once you get going it's a lot of fun. I'm flashing more often now than that homeless guy on the corner!
Enjoy!

Help Guide to Root Brand New Evo

Ok. this is the second Evo i got. 2 days ago i got my first one. tried rooting it. got lost n eveyrthing. camera stopped working idk y, took it bak, swapped me to a new one. just got the new one today, running 2.2 obviously.
Now can someone post up exactly which ones i should do to root and can someone point me in the right direction to put the Cyanogenmod 6.1 experimental on?
As much as I can't stand the people who say, "Use the Search Tool!" and then brush you off, I've got to say that after reading your post I can somewhat sympathize with them.
Your question(s) have been answered ad nauseum across these boards and a very quick search could provide the resources you are looking for far quicker than it takes to write a post and wait for an answer. I'm sure you can imagine what these boards would look like if every one of the thousands of people with the same questions as you simply posted them as you did rather than searching and reading. As the single best source for all things android and possibly the largest, it would be 90% posts just like yours and 10% of everything else. It is simply impossible and unreasonable to expect anything different.
But, I digress...
In regards to rooting the EVO... Again, it would be redundant for me or anyone else for that matter to give you step by step instructions since the answers are freely and easily available in the "Android Development" section of the EVO subforum. That said, here are two great places to start:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=787304
and
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765496
The above two links will take you directly to the two threads representing the two different root methods. In sum, the top one is the easiest and the second one is more involved but the end result as far as the phone is concerned is identical. Lots of folks recommend the harder method simply because of the value in what you learn in the process. That said, between those two threads I think you will find all the answers you are looking for and more.
honestly, in the past 5 minutes on the first 2 pages i have seen about 3 different threads titled [GUIDE] and something to do with rooting the evo... i dont think finding a guide should be too difficult for anybody
I'm wondering what the excuse is going to be on next exchange
Make sure you read it through this time.
I purchased my EVO last week and finally found the courage to follow the thread "[TOOL][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02 S-OFF" (created by zikronix). By carefully reading the thread's instructions and all of the Q&A's that followed, I successfully rooted my phone with little difficulty. I would caution, however, that flashing your WIMAX radio can result in your EVO not being able to pick up a 4G signal.
I could be doing something wrong or perhaps I simply haven't yet found an easy fix. All I know is that I'm enjoying my rooted EVO. As for the lost 4G capabilities, I'm not digging that so much. If I'd been aware of the risk of ruining my WIMAX radio, then I probably would have done a bit more research (after days and days of the research that I'd already done) in order to avoid the issue.
I'm not the only person who's encountered the broken WIMAX issue. A number of people have complained about it and there doesn't appear to be any reliable fix.
My intent is not to scare you away from rooting your EVO. I only wish to serve as a cautionary tale.
yea id say a bigger issue is that there may be too many guides... 2 clicks to root, 1 click to root, etc... its a little redundant

Also, you most likely have HW004. That is why your camera is NOT working after you flash any custom rom.

lol THANK YOU! one says intall HTC sync, other says uninstall it, one says use unrevoked 3.21, other says it doesnt work on 2.2. cmon yo. lol make a simple guide line like, (For New Evos(2.2))(Manually Root Process). if its automated, it either works on Win7 or Xp or Mac, or u just dont have Java Version or .net version. etc. i liked it when u just used CMD for eveyrthing. manually inputting the codes and stuff. dat seemd to never fail.
but on the other people who helped. thanks alot. i know too manyy guides get confusing, and if u recommened it, ill take it and give a wack at it. i have hardware version 003 btw to the other guy and never even got to root, neither the less flash a room lol.
thanks again!

The reason why there are multiple root guides is because they all came out at different times for different software versions. Sure there are a bunch for 2.2 but there have already been a couple updates since we got Froyo. You need to check your software version and use the root method that works for it. I'm not on a Sense ROM but I'm pretty sure the path to check is menu > settings > about phone > software information. Considering that you have a new 003 you are probably on 3.29.651.5 and if that's the case I recommend using the Unrevoked 3.21 method to root.

i don't know whether i should root my phone because i am afraid of bricking it, but there are too much limitations with unrooted phone.
It's really up to you, it isn't that risky if you have enough knowledge to do everything exactly according to the guides.

No offense, but you need a little knowledge to root and flash a custom rom. This isn't meant for the average user. It feels like everyone who gets an android phone nowadays (as it's becoming a more popular OS) want's to root and flash a custom rom as soon as they have in their hands without even knowing what it really means. The information to do all this is available here on this forum in form of guides which in most of the cases are quite extensive. If you want to root and flash a custom rom etc, you will have to do some reading on your own.
AFAIK this forum isn't here to hold the hands of android virgins as they try modify their phones without even knowing what a command prompt is. Almost every day someone new wants step by step instructions for this and for that even though there are good instructions out there. This forum is meant for people with some experience and knowledge that want to get the most out of our phones. New members are ofcourse welcome, but please, do some studying on your own too.
I was so scared to root my first phone last week. I sat for three hours reading guides over and over again to make sure I new what I was doing and I havent regretted doing it.
Too often I come across threads like this, if your not sure then you probably don't need to root, yet! If you decide to root read the stickies in the development thread, and don't say you havent got time to read a 100 page thread it'll be a lot quicker than fixing your DHD when it's buggered up

I DIDN'T need to downgrade first and simply followed the video on the bottom of this page.
(Youtube version)
I then simply installed CM7 rom via Rom Manager.
(I am rarely sick but I had been quite ill and in a lot of pain for a few days which was a shock to the system, and when I did get better, I had the mindset that nothing matters at all.) It's not easy for most folk to feel that way. Life is a game. Nothing ventured nothing gained.
Unless you are unhappy or bored with Sense or the performance of your phone - there isn't too much reason to root in my opinion.

There's a lot of changes and benefits if you root your phone and install a custom ROM... First, there are a lot of custom ROMs, for any taste. MIUI imitate the iOS system, with the liberty of Android OS, for example, and RevoHD leave the original SENSE ROM, with improvements of course.
Then, custom ROMs have some interesting tweaks, like zipalign, the ads removing and a better management of the RAM.
To finish, I did it myself (running the MIUI ROM by Rey) and I have no regrets. After reading a few tutorials it was easy as ABC !
Like it was said before It's up to you, I dont intend to convince anyone, but If you wanna do it, go doing some searches. This forum has some tutorials, and anyone, even a noob can understand them.

EASY way to ROOT (JUST ROOT) Droid Incredible?

Hello all, I am looking for an EASY way to root the Incredible. There has to be a better way than this stupid "downgrade this, flash that" bull that I am seeing everywhere. Do any of the one click root methods work anymore? Or can someone give me a guide written in legible ENGLISH (I.E NOT THIS: http://androidforums.com/incredible...ot-unlock-downgrade-achieve-s-off-htcdev.html)
What is your HBOOT version? If it's 1.02 or higher that is the best way and only way I know of. Also in my opinion one click root methods teach you nothing and make troubleshooting difficult.

No interest in learning. HBOOT says 1.07.
Problem with guides like that: They aren't full guides, "i.e use adb devices to see if connected. If its not, install HTC Sync" guess what, HTC Sync didn't change a damn thing.

Well, most people consider root a power, and with great power..... Anyways, this is a developer forum, aimed at developers. I don't have a problem teachinganyone anything (within the realm of my knowledge, of course), but I do have aproblem with those who want their hand held, and refuse to look on their own. Ican pretty much guarantee you, that if you don't learn anything, and wanteverything spelled out, that's all fine and dandy, till you have an issue. Orsomething else doesn't work right, and then you constantly ask questions on howto fix your phone when a little research and a little learning will preventmost of these issues in the first place.

I think what a lot of people forget is that this is not a "make my phone neat & kewl" place.
As implied by the name this is technically a Developers forum/community.
Now what does that mean? Well first off it means that there is an expectation that if you are here then you want to customize your device but rather than just installing something that someone packaged you want to understand how it works and maybe even enhance it yourself.
When I first came here with a Blue Angel it was a different environment. PDA Phones were not embraced by the general public because of the expense and complexity (I paid over $400 for my BA). A $400 phone 4 years ago was expensive, today the Tilt is $300 after rebates but with inflation & the rise in the cost of other devices and the fact that there are other sources out there giving them away for $150 our neat bit of kit has become popular with mainstream users.
Now we have a flood of new users who are asking not "How can I do this myself" but more like "Give me the quick fix" without caring to understand the process. See if you read the threads then you get to experience the learning process, you see how the issues were investigated and confirmed. Then you get to watch the different attempts at resolution and learn why some failed while others worked. That is called Development.
The NooB backlash is coming from users who have walked in the development shoes and is directed mainly at those who don't care for the journey but just want the end result or destination.
As a Development Forum we are just as much (if not more) about the journey. I've read so many comments like "I don't have time to read all of the threads" or "I don't care how it works, just that it does". These very statements are contrary to the heart & soul of XDA-Devs and that is why the backlash is so strong.
Let me be very clear on this: IF YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT UNDERSTANDING THE JOURNEY THEN YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN'T BE HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
XDA-Devs is about developers & hackers helping each other and working together to get the most out of our devices by understanding them better than most.
XDA-Devs is not about helping everyone who wants a "Kewl bit of kit" make their phone better than the guy next to him.
Now do we go kicking users off who never contribute anything, NO. We tolerate it to an extent. Where the toleration ends is when these users start diluting the usefulness of the forum by repeating the same questions over and over again.
You ask us to understand your position. Well if you want to benefit from our experience and time then I think it is only fair that you understand our position.

/end rant.
Sorry about that. You're easiest bet is to use htcdev.com to unlock your bootloader, then flash a recovery through your now unlocked HBOOT, then flash aSuperuser.zip to gain root.
if you knew someone who could root it for you, that would be easiest. maybe you could pay someone to root your phone? you know what we say, only smart people now how to get stuff for free or cheap. and in the realm of 'hacking" what we are definitely doing is value adding to what we have.
but if you learn how to do it, you could be that person helping others!
btw, funny thing about that link-that is the one I used. i found it a little intimidating at first(and looked extensively for an easier way that I never found) but now that I;ve rooted 3 phones, its fairly accurate. unfortunately you do have to go through the steps. there aren;t any shortcuts but it works. and the good thing is that if anything actually goes wrong in the process, atleast you should know where and why and how to fix.

Hello all, I am looking for an EASY way to root the Incredible. There has to be a better way than this stupid "downgrade this, flash that" bull that I am seeing everywhere. Do any of the one click root methods work anymore? Or can someone give me a guide written in legible ENGLISH

You could try Unrevoked (just search it). I have NO idea if it will work with your phone, as that can depend on a number of things. I guess just try some research on that. It's not like a 1-click root on your phone, but sort of like doing all of the ADB stuff from the manual way for you. I can't recall what actual version I used, but I know it installed CWMR and gave me S-Off, so I'm pretty sure I ran Unrevoked3 and/or Unrevoked Forever. You should be able to just use Unrevoked3 if you just want root.
Sorry I can't do more than point you in the right direction.... to give you any idea how long ago it was.... I decided to root because the Incredible was not getting FroYo..... hehe....

FWIW, there was a version of Unrevoked that worked with certain versions of the Dinc's software (that's how I originally rooted my first Dinc), but recent OTA upgrades have made that method very unreliable. If you have HBOOT 1.07, there is no question that the best way to get root is using the guide, and yes, that guide the OP linked is a very good one. Follow it carefully and it will work, every time. You can even stop at step 3 and have a stock, rooted, s-on phone, without the complicated downgrade which is required to get s-off. Which is what the OP wanted, I believe.

LOL @ legible ENGLISH :good: Sometimes I feel the same way.
P.S. Broke out my old HTC INCRED 2. Think I may try rooting it. Got nothing to loose.
Keep the threads alive; -)

[Q] A general advice query from a Noob. (Sorry!)

Ok, for starters i'll apologise for A - Being a noob (We've all got to start somewhere I suppose!) & B - Possibly having put this question in the wrong category. (Hope not,but mistakes do happen!)
OK, i'm running a rooted Wildfire S with Wildchild as a custom ROM, but frankly i'm fed up of the (Even after rooting) lack of memory. Not wanting to commit to a 24 month contract upgrade (& have warranties,etc... to consider), i've found a nicely priced Desire HD i'm toying with buying.
I'm wondering how hard they are to root (A lot of threads here seem to be titled "HELP, PHONE STUCK," & the like & just wanted to gather a few opinions from those more experienced (Everyone on here,by all accounts ) about whether the handset is a good option &/or possible alternatives, before I commit to part with my hard earned in exchange for a possible problem child!!
Cheers & apologies for my noobness.
If you understand this, then you are good to go: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38543349

Thanks for your reply.
I understand most of it. (I tend not to go gung-ho at things, when I rooted & custom ROM'd my Wildfire I took my time & read & re-read guides & suggestions before starting. Most of it is easily remembered!)
Not 100% sure about making a Goldcard, but that's what these forums & Google are for, aren't they?) As such, i'll figure it out & if I can't/don't/get stuck, i'll be back with my SOS flags out shouting "Help" at the top of my voice!!
Cheers for the response. Like I said, i'm a bit of a noob at this. Phones' take me out of my comfort zone, I'm a PC hardware man by & large, but I learn fast. Lol, perhaps one day, i'll be giving the advice, not asking the questions.
Thou art a Gentleman & a scholar. Thank you.

Somewhere around the last so many pages is a script for the GC.
Take it easy.
P.S. Scholar due to my sig? That was mostly team effort. They deserve the credit.

I shall indeed take it easy, step by step & do much reading everything twice or perhaps three times before I attempt anything.
"Gentleman & a Scholar" is a phrase I use in lieu of words like "You're very kind". I find it a more interesting phrase. That said, I doff my cap & raise a glass in salute of you & your team for your scripts. I had a click on your signature; It gave me some food for thought.
Thanks once again.
