Hey guys,
after looking around the interwebz for a few days, this looks like one of the best spots to sit on and learn from. I have had my evo from launch and it is fully updated. Recently, i have heard much talk about full rooting and froyo coming soon officially.
I am new to "hacking" phones. not sure if thats the correct word but i "hack" or have fun (not the bad way) on computers and used to on xbox360.
could someone please point me in the right direction?
The only reason i ask this is because i have seen several rooting tutorials that are not identical so i was curious if one is better than the others.

This is not a q and a forum. There is one butter this is not it. I suggest reading a lot more and then formulating a real question. There isn't a best method that is why there is more then one.

Do toastcfh root part 1 then unlock nand part 2. this is the best and official way to root in my opinion. And its really not that hard. But I think theres a few new ones floating around that are even easier! My honest opinion is to just read, and then read some more. And when your done reading, read even more! Youll be sooo surprised how much you will learn in this forum!

if you've appplied the latest OTA update (1.47.651.1), then you have to wait for dev. to come up with ways to unlock it (root). if you did not update the OTA then using toast method 1 and 2 would work fine....

If you found this site, you are already pointed in the right direction.
Don't take personally, since obvisouly I don't know you, but if you can't follow the guides here you really should not mess with your phone.

I do understand (90% sure) most of the terms and processes for rooting. I do have the latest update (1.47.651.1). So i guess ill have to wait until another root for this version.
Is there a certain time gap between update and root for current update that i should wait to look for. i know people come up with the root so its not exact time gap. im more asking does it usually take closer to a week or like a month. just so i can keep it in the back of my head

What the hell? It seems like suddenly, in the past couple of days, everyone is trying to root their slide with old methods.
The ONLY working method as of now is nbetcher's exploid method. Look through the forum and you'll find it.

You know why that is? Because I didn't make the guides for 5 year olds. I'm sorry, but if you don't understand some implied things (like having to install the Android SDK and make sure your paths to its tools directory are correctly setup, or having the files extracted in the right place when you 'adb push', not to mention typing things correctly) then you probably don't deserve to have a rooted phone. My guide is not intended to allow your 5 year-old child root your phone, it is intended for people who have enough knowledge to understand the concept to complete the root process and potentially learn more.
I'm sure everyone except the elitists will think that I'm an arrogant a*s hole. Truth is you won't learn anything if you don't figure things out for yourself. Plus some people root so they can Wifi tether - a practice that if you do not have enough understanding of technology to root your own phone could lead to you abusing the carrier's network.
Finally, we're here in this forum as developers in order to collaborate together amongst one another about constructing ROMs, developing software, learning, and unlocking the phone's full potential. What we're not here for is: troubleshooting users' phones, making a statement against T-Mobile/HTC by helping every user root their phone, or ridding the world of hunger.
Over the past couple months I have been (very) slowly working on a detailed guide, but the problem is that no matter how simple I make it people will still manage to fsck it up. Making a perfect guide is a long and difficult task. Ideally though we won't need it soon since AlphaRev will be coming out with a utility to S-OFF automatically.

You might try reading the thread with the original slide root method in it. Eugene wrote it I believe -it will show you why the '#' is showing up. You'll be pissed you ever asked this question Though I'm not sure how you got it since that method, from what I've read, doesn't work.

i don't know whether i should root my phone because i am afraid of bricking it, but there are too much limitations with unrooted phone.

It's really up to you, it isn't that risky if you have enough knowledge to do everything exactly according to the guides.

im not sure coz i updated my software directly from htc and idk can it be rooted without any probs. which guide do you recommend?

Tell us your build number. It is in settings-about-software information. Then ppl can tell you what to do next.

No offense, but you need a little knowledge to root and flash a custom rom. This isn't meant for the average user. It feels like everyone who gets an android phone nowadays (as it's becoming a more popular OS) want's to root and flash a custom rom as soon as they have in their hands without even knowing what it really means. The information to do all this is available here on this forum in form of guides which in most of the cases are quite extensive. If you want to root and flash a custom rom etc, you will have to do some reading on your own.
AFAIK this forum isn't here to hold the hands of android virgins as they try modify their phones without even knowing what a command prompt is. Almost every day someone new wants step by step instructions for this and for that even though there are good instructions out there. This forum is meant for people with some experience and knowledge that want to get the most out of our phones. New members are ofcourse welcome, but please, do some studying on your own too.

I was so scared to root my first phone last week. I sat for three hours reading guides over and over again to make sure I new what I was doing and I havent regretted doing it.

Too often I come across threads like this, if your not sure then you probably don't need to root, yet! If you decide to root read the stickies in the development thread, and don't say you havent got time to read a 100 page thread it'll be a lot quicker than fixing your DHD when it's buggered up

I DIDN'T need to downgrade first and simply followed the video on the bottom of this page.
(Youtube version)
I then simply installed CM7 rom via Rom Manager.
(I am rarely sick but I had been quite ill and in a lot of pain for a few days which was a shock to the system, and when I did get better, I had the mindset that nothing matters at all.) It's not easy for most folk to feel that way. Life is a game. Nothing ventured nothing gained.
Unless you are unhappy or bored with Sense or the performance of your phone - there isn't too much reason to root in my opinion.

Best thing i ever did. I had a jailbroken iphone before i got my Desire HD so rooting was the first thing i looked at when i got my HD, getting rid of the branding was the main reason but then i realized how many Roms were out there and now its hard to choose which one to use :

There's a lot of changes and benefits if you root your phone and install a custom ROM... First, there are a lot of custom ROMs, for any taste. MIUI imitate the iOS system, with the liberty of Android OS, for example, and RevoHD leave the original SENSE ROM, with improvements of course.
Then, custom ROMs have some interesting tweaks, like zipalign, the ads removing and a better management of the RAM.
To finish, I did it myself (running the MIUI ROM by Rey) and I have no regrets. After reading a few tutorials it was easy as ABC !
Like it was said before It's up to you, I dont intend to convince anyone, but If you wanna do it, go doing some searches. This forum has some tutorials, and anyone, even a noob can understand them.

Hello all, I am looking for an EASY way to root the Incredible. There has to be a better way than this stupid "downgrade this, flash that" bull that I am seeing everywhere. Do any of the one click root methods work anymore? Or can someone give me a guide written in legible ENGLISH (I.E NOT THIS: http://androidforums.com/incredible...ot-unlock-downgrade-achieve-s-off-htcdev.html)

What is your HBOOT version? If it's 1.02 or higher that is the best way and only way I know of. Also in my opinion one click root methods teach you nothing and make troubleshooting difficult.

No interest in learning. HBOOT says 1.07.
Problem with guides like that: They aren't full guides, "i.e use adb devices to see if connected. If its not, install HTC Sync" guess what, HTC Sync didn't change a damn thing.

Well, most people consider root a power, and with great power..... Anyways,this is a developer forum, aimed at developers. I don't have a problem teachinganyone anything (within the realm of my knowledge, of course), but I do have aproblem with those who want their hand held, and refuse to look on their own. Ican pretty much guarantee you, that if you don't learn anything, and wanteverything spelled out, that's all fine and dandy, till you have an issue. Orsomething else doesn't work right, and then you constantly ask questions on howto fix your phone when a little research and a little learning will preventmost of these issues in the first place.

As implied by the name this is technically a Developers forum/community.

As a Development Forum we are just as much (if not more) about the journey. I've read so many comments like "I don't have time to read all of the threads" or "I don't care how it works, just that it does". These very statements are contrary to the heart & soul of XDA-Devs and that is why the backlash is so strong.
Let me be very clear on this: IF YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT UNDERSTANDING THE JOURNEY THEN YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN'T BE HERE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
XDA-Devs is about developers & hackers helping each other and working together to get the most out of our devices by understanding them better than most.
XDA-Devs is not about helping everyone who wants a "Kewl bit of kit" make their phone better than the guy next to him.
Now do we go kicking users off who never contribute anything, NO. We tolerate it to an extent. Where the toleration ends is when these users start diluting the usefulness of the forum by repeating the same questions over and over again.
You ask us to understand your position. Well if you want to benefit from our experience and time then I think it is only fair that you understand our position.

Sorry about that. You're easiest bet is to use htcdev.com to unlock your bootloader, then flash a recovery through your now unlocked HBOOT, then flash aSuperuser.zip to gain root.

if you knew someone who could root it for you, that would be easiest. maybe you could pay someone to root your phone? you know what we say, only smart people now how to get stuff for free or cheap. and in the realm of 'hacking" what we are definitely doing is value adding to what we have.
but if you learn how to do it, you could be that person helping others!
btw, funny thing about that link-that is the one I used. i found it a little intimidating at first(and looked extensively for an easier way that I never found) but now that I;ve rooted 3 phones, its fairly accurate. unfortunately you do have to go through the steps. there aren;t any shortcuts but it works. and the good thing is that if anything actually goes wrong in the process, atleast you should know where and why and how to fix.

You could try Unrevoked (just search it). I have NO idea if it will work with your phone, as that can depend on a number of things. I guess just try some research on that. It's not like a 1-click root on your phone, but sort of like doing all of the ADB stuff from the manual way for you. I can't recall what actual version I used, but I know it installed CWMR and gave me S-Off, so I'm pretty sure I ran Unrevoked3 and/or Unrevoked Forever. You should be able to just use Unrevoked3 if you just want root.
Sorry I can't do more than point you in the right direction.... to give you any idea how long ago it was.... I decided to root because the Incredible was not getting FroYo..... hehe....

FWIW, there was a version of Unrevoked that worked with certain versions of the Dinc's software (that's how I originally rooted my first Dinc), but recent OTA upgrades have made that method very unreliable. If you have HBOOT 1.07, there is no question that the best way to get root is using the guide, and yes, that guide the OP linked is a very good one. Follow it carefully and it will work, every time. You can even stop at step 3 and have a stock, rooted, s-on phone, without the complicated downgrade which is required to get s-off. Which is what the OP wanted, I believe.

P.S. Broke out my old HTC INCRED 2. Think I may try rooting it. Got nothing to loose.

Is Pixel C Rootable?

Just wanted to make sure it is rootable before I buy. Also, is the rooting process as simple as clicking a button (Like KingRoot/Towelroot) or is it more complex? I want to be crystal clear before I buy the tablet.

Did you even attempt to look around before posting this?? A quick glance in Android Development would have answered your question in a few seconds.

Unfortunately, I'm no Android expert. In fact, I've never had an android device before; this will be my first.

I wasn't able to make too much sense out of it, besides the fact that it's complicated. I just want a straightforward answer; is it possible for me to root the tablet without knowing any form of programming or Android know-how?

Then why do you want to root? You kinda need to be able to understand what you're doing regardless.
But anyway look at the toolkit in original dev section

I have rooted every android device I have ever owned a bout a dozen going back 4-5 years now i guess.
not as difficult as my Oneplus 2 but not a cake walk either.
I wouldn't recommend this device for rooting if you have never done it before.

Bottomline is it doable by someone experienced in iOS jailbreaking?

What is the issue when we already have root? Follow the instructions in the post and you'll have no problems.

We we're all beginners once but laziness is not an acceptable excuse. If you would have even glanced an inch down from General on the Pixel C section of the XDA website you would have clearly seen two out of the only three threads in Android Development talk about root, if you would have looked at the very first thread (Xceed kernel) you would have clearly seen that it IS rootable and how to go about doing it. Also if you even glanced at Original Android Development and took a look at MSkip's thread about his toolkit it is a simple utility that allows you to unlock and root (not sure if he added this in yet) your device with the press of a button. Hell you could have even googled "pixel c root" and been shown various pages that would say that it is rootable. How much more obvious do you want it to be?
Your last sentence is ridiculous, that's like saying "Can I transplant a person's heart without knowing a single thing about medicine?" The answer is yes, but you'll most likely screw something up then come crying to us to fix it for you when your $500 tablet is dead. You seem to know absolutely nothing about Android, yet you know what rooting is (do you actually know what it means, or is it just a term you learned?), if you want to mess around with Android and get your feet wet with rooting and modding, get a Nexus device, they're a lot harder (neigh impossible) to brick. There is very little development for ANY tablet, and this is an especially odd one since it was originally meant to be a ChromeOS device, but at the last second they decided to throw Android on it instead so the bootloader is completely different than your standard Android device, which means the rooting process is different than any other Android device. Rooting and modding Android devices is not a simple "one and done" thing like jailbreaking an iPhone is (I did it years ago to an ex's iPhone 4 and actually found it far more complicated than unlocking a Nexus device, other devices are a different story). You actually have to know what you're doing and how to fix it in the event that something doesn't work correctly. I have rooted friends phones before when they asked me to and had no idea what to do when I gave it back to them so every time something went goofy they would come running to me to fix it for them, then blame me when something doesn't work the way they expected it to.
Read up on how to unlock a Nexus device (It literally takes about 30 seconds and three words you have to type), then how to flash a recovery image (once again, only 4 words and another 30 seconds). Sorry for sounding like an asshole but a lot of us here don't tolerate helpless users and if you keep asking questions like this where there are obvious answers you continually get this type of response. It would be more understandable if this forum section was overloaded with tons of threads and the information buried deep within a 50 page thread in one of the sub sections (I've been guilty of that and I've been here for years), but once again, there are literally like 3 threads in the development sections and the info is in the first page of the first thread.
edit: I just looked at the link you posted and if you can't follow a simple step by step instruction manual which provides you with literally everything you need, don't even attempt it because you obviously have no clue what you're doing and I'm going to assume you're not a techy person because that's actually pretty simple. You should have been here a month ago when we had partially broken root access, you would have been scared to death! Try rooting the old HTC Rezound for Verizon which required a hardware mod, or try to root a Samsung Galaxy device without tripping Knox, or getting rid of it completely, then restoring it to a factory state and make it look like Knox was never removed. If you can't press a few buttons on your device to enable dev mode, then type a few commands to unlock the bootloader you're going to be completely lost later on when it comes to flashing partitions and flashing and learning about kernels. Get the Pixel C, it's a great device, root doesn't add that much functionality for now, but I wouldn't suggest even attempting to root it because you clearly lack the desire to learn anything about the rooting process and just want to do it so you can say "I rooted my Pixel C! Now what do I do with it?" I've seen tons of these types of posts, which makes the user look dumb because they don't even know why they did it in the first place, they just knew it was something "cool" to do.

Your last sentence is ridiculous, that's like saying "Can I transplant a person's heart without knowing a single thing about medicine?" The answer is yes, but you'll most likely screw something up then come crying to us to fix it for you when your $500 tablet is dead. You seem to know absolutely nothing about Android, yet you know what rooting is (do you actually know what it means, or is it just a term you learned?), if you want to mess around with Android and get your feet wet with rooting and modding, get a Nexus device, they're a lot harder (neigh impossible) to brick. There is very little development for ANY tablet, and this is an especially odd one since it was originally meant to be a ChromeOS device, but at the last second they decided to throw Android on it instead so the bootloader is completely different than your standard Android device, which means the rooting process is different than any other Android device. Rooting and modding Android devices is not a simple "one and done" thing like jailbreaking an iPhone is (I did it years ago to an ex's iPhone 4 and actually found it far more complicated than unlocking a Nexus device, other devices are a different story). You actually have to know what you're doing and how to fix it in the event that something doesn't work correctly. I have rooted friends phones before when they asked me to and had no idea what to do when I gave it back to them so every time something went goofy they would come running to me to fix it for them, then blame me when something doesn't work the way they expected it to.
Read up on how to unlock a Nexus device (It literally takes about 30 seconds and three words you have to type), then how to flash a recovery image (once again, only 4 words and another 30 seconds). Sorry for sounding like an asshole but a lot of us here don't tolerate helpless users and if you keep asking questions like this where there are obvious answers you continually get this type of response. It would be more understandable if this forum section was overloaded with tons of threads and the information buried deep within a 50 page thread in one of the sub sections (I've been guilty of that and I've been here for years), but once again, there are literally like 3 threads in the development sections and the info is in the first page of the first thread.
edit: I just looked at the link you posted and if you can't follow a simple step by step instruction manual which provides you with literally everything you need, don't even attempt it because you obviously have no clue what you're doing and I'm going to assume you're not a techy person because that's actually pretty simple. You should have been here a month ago when we had partially broken root access, you would have been scared to death!
