hey guys. when trying to download .apk files directly to my phone about 1 out of 5 files download as .htm files and are way smaller than the file size that the .apk should be. I've tried multiple different browsers and download sites. know why this happens?

This has happened to me sometimes, when I tried to download apps from random downloading sites. (megaupload, rapidshare, etc...) I would maybe look for the apk on the developers site and download from there. I think it is more or less likely due to page coding with java.
Pay for your apps in the market and you some have this problem...............

I cant download files from 4Shared or rapidshare. all i get is a small file and if i change the extension to HTML you can see that the file is actually a new page to download the file from with a higher timer.
I tried wiping browser data.
I tried wiping cache/dalvik.
I tried a fresh wipe with the stock rom and no apps installed.
i tried CM6.
i tried different browsers (Opera, xScope, Dolphin)
i tried the download plugin setting in astro and linda file managers.
I tried using the tornado download manager.
just cant think of anything else. this all used to work for me and i'm not sure when exactly it stopped. currently using Fresh 3.2 with the kernel it comes with. this problem doesnt happen on megaupload.
Please help! anyone have any ideas?
I had this happen once... I am assuming you are downloading on your evo. When downloading, make sure the phone stays awake(touching screen), or disable the screen to sleep, and monitor the progress in the notifications dropdown to ensure you are getting the full download.
Yep my screen stays awake. Monitoring it in downloads doesn't help.
Just to be clear this happens on 3g and wifi.

Then I don't have an answer!
Good luck.
possibly an issue with those 2 roms? I've seen people mention that issue before, but I've never had an issue with that on Baked Snack with the stock browser.
Ok just tried baked snack 1.7
No luck.
Wiped everything twice with RA.
Thanks for trying though.

what are you trying to get? Possibly an issue with that specific download? post the link, and I'll try and get it myself at some point tonight and see what happens

This has happened to me on a consistent basis since owning the evo on every rom I've flashed. The only one that worked for me 100% of the time was mediafire.
That so strange. Now its not working for me either. I havent downloaded to my phone in a while, but I specifically remember 4share always worked fine for me. Sorry man - don't know what's going on.

4shared worked a couple times for me today! Maybe it was a problem with the website.
Edit: that one link still doesn't work

If you are using any type of add blocker on your evo... turn it off.... alot of legit redirect links get blocked by these apps.

i would try a diff browser. stock browser has those issues. i personally use opera when dl. never had a issue with opera.
Tried reverting on adfree.
Didn't help.thanks for trying.

Can't use opera. The timer doesn't run once the page loads.

It may have something to do with the browser identifying as mobile. My Samsung Moment did it too when I tried to download other zips and rars using the stock browser. I know what your talking about, it downloads about 5k and says complete. Also it sucks balls wlhaving to wait 180 seconds to download a ROM, at least use mediafire folks!
UAString set to desktop. Mobile view turned off.
Still no luck.

4shared works great for me, but lately when I download something the timer takes ages to finish. If it says your download will be ready in 15 seconds, it could take a minute or so for it to be ready, any ideas?

Some things you can try:
Uninstalling Adobe Reader and reinstalling it in the market
Using another app like VuDroid
Checking to see if your pdf files are corrupt
That made it work and I don't understand why does it happen tho I'm taking the apk from now when I flash another rom thanks

i made another post regarding download issues with my Inc 2 but it has come to my attention that certain browsers now block you from being able to download stuff like .mp3 files. that being the case, I currently use the stock browser, dolphin hd and skyfire. downloads dont seem to work with any of them.
does anyone know of a browser that will allow you to download media?... and to let you know, i can download torrents just fine with adownloader.

Download astro file manager. Go into preferences and check the box to allow browser downloads.
I've had other phones that would not allow me to download anything until this was done.
I have "Download All Files" installed and have been able to use that when email attachments or other downloads fail to make it to my SD for whatever reason. I'm not a big fan of the option to use it popping up almost every time I click a link though...
I've been watching some videos on YouTube to learn how to mod my fire and some of them suggest downloading apk files that are not available on the google market from 4share. Are these apk files safe?
Usually they are but sometimes they can contain viruses and other crap. One thing I do is check what the file size is in the Play store and then check what it is the app you're downloading.
I would just stick with trusted sources though. I don't recommend downloading from other sites.
It depends how dependable the sources are. Try sticking to trusted sites and stores. Try reading other's comments if available.
We can't criticize "apks" as a whole whether its a safe practice or not. It depends on individual apk file. So always check the permissions required while installing the app.
If you notice anything that looks suspicious, it is a nice idea not to install them.
Although far from perfect, keeping antivirus/anti-spyware application may help as they have database of known malicious apps
Nothing is safe.
APK's are as safe as downloading an exe from a third party source on a computer. ITS A SAFE AS THE SITE YOU GET IT FROM. Sketchy site=probs not safe, normal site=probs alright. I havent had a sibgle problem with apks yet, and ive used at least a hundred by now. Generally, they are safe.

Would you consider 4share a safe site?

No.
An APK is the Android equivalent to a .DEB or .RPM for Linux, or a .MSI for Windows. It's an installer package, and it by definition contains executable code. When you open an APK, you're in effect putting your device in the hands of the person that made that APK. Ask yourself, "would it be a good idea to run an MSI or EXE from site XYZ?" The answer is the same for APKs.
Is apktops safe

Apktops is safe but they want you to try out the software before you buy. Keeping the software for more than (24 hrs?) is illegal.

Would running an antivirus app let you know if the apk is bad?

Which sites are trustable?
all then thats needed to know is if there are any sites that can be trusted with the apk files?
if you any please do respond.
APK files are safe if you are downloading from reliable and safe sources. Now there are many well reputed apk sites.
You can use any source to download the apps (apk) but after downloading scan the downloaded apk through VirusTotal to make sure that apk is safe and secure.
I'm having a huge problem downloading rars or zips whether it be on 4g or WIFI or with dolphin browser, stock, or skyfire. I get errors as ssoon as the download starts every time. I can't figure out if this is some sort of block attempt from sprint / Samsung on filesharing/hosting sites or if its just my phone. Anyone have any insight on this? Driving me crazy

Try the app "Download all files" - know that works for me. Usually it's a lack of file association.
Opera mobile works for me.

I have no.idea.why but download.all.files.refuses to assosiate its self with files.until after I download them which is rare and I get the same results on opera.mobile

check the download directory. Dolphin>Settings>More>Settings>Privacy & Personal Data and see if there is something in there. Check you 'download' directory too (sdcard/download).

But it is dowloading now, right? That solves your first problem.
Opening a rar will require an app and there are free ones out there on Play.

No they do not download what so ever on wifi 3g or 4g all browsers will just pop up and say error. I'm really thinking its just sprint blocking filesharing sites or something internally wrong with my phone. Its the same thing for downloading roms, tools for roms, or even music that's contained in rars. It just refuses to downlaod things off of browsers.
Edit: it appears to be a memory problem with the internal storage switched it to external dl location and it started working.I was unaware cuz this was previously my girls phone. Thanks for the responses and help.
