[Q] Why do most file downloads fail?

So you have some files you want to download using the phone... but as soon as the download starts, one of two things happens:
1. It immediately stops and says that it is finished even though you know you didn't just pull 500mb in half a second.
2. It won't download and just says unsuccessful.
This is starting to irritate me. Doesn't matter which browser or user-agent.
Thoughts?
EDIT: It may have been the user agent... didn't think that would matter

Happens to me too...usually like rapidshare or fileserve and other certain sites...but yet megaupload, 4shared, mediafire, and duckload works...havent figured out why

Fileserve didn't work with the Android user-agent, but I changed user agent to Mac Desktop and it worked...

I've always thought it was due to a hiccup in the signal. I know that if I switched from wifi to 3g in the middle of a download, it would fail during the time you have no connection. Maybe it's because the signal is getting interrupted.

Downloading a zip...

Is there a way to download a zip file from the internet on the phone?

Just click on it and it starts the download.

I don't know if the stock android browser supports it, but in Dolphin Browser or Opera you can download any type of file. You can use something like file expert to open the zip file.

OP just stated downloading. Stock browser on EI22 works fine for that. Miren stopped working for some reason though.

i'm with the OP.. i've never had good luck consistently getting .zip files to download. Most the time they'll go to start, hang for a min, then fail. tried stock browser, and a couple others. doesn't seem to matter what rom I'm using either.

This has been working fine for me since EH17 when it got fixed. I download full ROMs with no problem.

I've never experienced any issues downloading any files, let alone zip files, using multiple browsers. I'm currently using a blacked out version of Dolphin mini (ty Starsky's rom) and have yet to have an issue still. I usually use Root Explorer to move the file to the folder of my choice, and I guess roms take a bit longer than most files (size) but never any issues. Good luck!

havnt tried using a diff. browser guess ill have to do that just kind of annoying when u wanna download something and it wont download to my phone so i have to be around a cpu everytime i wanna flash something new... but thanks for the inputs everyone

What ROM are you on?

I think it's the file host some of the rom devs use, or possibly his router. For certain roms, downloading over wifi fails no matter what I do, and I end up using 3G.(unlimited plan, 150mb is nothing)

From a computer or your phone?

Phone....I came from the evo 3d and was able to download any rom off xda on my phone without it failing just seeing what I'm doing wrong g on this one lol

Try to download a different browser like dolphin or Opera browser and see if that helps.

Try download all app from Google Play.

Is your internal memory full? Happened to me before, after I filled my phone up with music. And it wouldn't even tell me memory is full, it just failed downloads. Moved/deleted some files and downloads worked fine after.

Did you buy a used phone? Might be an internal hardware issue.

Firefox or Opera are the only two browsers that work to download anything. Plus while downloading do not exit the app.

Its probably the network.. I noticed running on sprints network whe the phone would go into deep sleep the radio would turn off and download would fail.. My suggestion is to try force roaming with another prl and try to download while roaming.. For some reason when im on sprint prl 60687 using sprints 3g data i have to keep screen on until its finished.. While roaming i can throw it on the charger and come back to a finished download. Or get a browser that will allow you to start/stop the download but this way you might get a bad download.. I wish more devs would use torrents since its way easier to download using adownloader

If you are using stock browser to download I'm pretty sure it's the browser download boatbrowser the only one I'm able to download with... For me it's impossible to download in el29 stock browser

It's because the file type is not compatible with any apps you have. I had the same problem. Download any file explorer from the play store and it'll work

Go into the market and search "Astro". Its a great file explorer and if you go into "Menu"......."Preferences"....and check box that says "Enable Browser Downloads" then reboot. You can now DL anything from any site.

Go to market and download the app called download all files
It works with stock browser... the browser is made to block some stuff not what exactly...

Download stops at 99% and fails!!

Is anyone having issues downloading files on your device? This is a first one for me. I have more than enough memory on both sd cards but my downloads fail at 99%. I've tried different roms to see if maybe it was just the one I was running but they all seem to have the same results. I've been trying to download Jovys Stockorama v2 but it keeps failing. Anyone have an idea of what could be causing this to happen? Thanks in advance guys!

I've had issues in the past downloading large files over mobile connection. With a solid 5-15mbit downstream. Just times out for no reason. One day I can download my CM update, the next day I can't.
Use computer or wifi.

Yeah this is the 1st time is happened to me. Unfortunately my WiFi is down at the moment and I won't get another modem till the end of the week.

Have you tried downloading it with Download Manager? I have had that issue using the stock download app before but it works fine with the Download Manager app.

I didn't even think to do that! I'm going to try it right now and see if it works for me. Will update shortly

I've had this problem when I'd use boat browser, it would always fail at 99%. Wouldn't matter what I'd be downloading. The way i got past it was by installing dolphin browser and use that.

I actually used dolphin too and I had the same errors. I am using download manager right now to see if it works. I had a hard time connecting to the server I think they were having issues. I'm at 50% at the moment. I hope it works!!

I am having the same issue with larger files, usually I just try a different browser until one finally works (ie Chrome, Dolphin, xScope, Next Browser, Lightning, Boat Browser, Firefox, Opera, etc. - Usually one out of two or three will work.)
Question for Aerowinder AND anyone reading this running CM10.1, are you getting hotboots (random reboots without the SGS3 boot logo) on CM10.1? --- I've had this happen a lot when I'm taking the time to download these files on WiFi... I read somewhere that the d2mo CM Team is working on a new kernal to solve such issues, but its a pain when doing such tasks on WiFi...

I tried download manager but it downloaded with errors. It also took twice as long to download. Which app are you using?

I was able to download detmobilized on their dev-host mirror link. I tried other files but was unable to download all the way. Maybe it also depends on the server. This is the 1st time I've had issues.

On stockorama download page, scroll down a little and you can choose a different mirror/server to download from.

If the Download Manager didn't work try Opera... It's useless for most things but when I wanted to download something and nothing else was doing it, opera never failed.

Torrents on note 3

This is ridiculous my phone wont even let me download torrents at all unless I am on wifi which is sorry since I have the truely unlimited plan. I have had nothing but issues with the filter this phone has on me due to knoxx I believe .. helppp please stockkk not rooted

First I would make sure on the torrent app you're using (Bittorrent, Ttorrent, Utorrent etc) isn't the problem.
I remember when I had downloaded Bittorrent it asked me if I only wanted to download torrents while on WiFi and I accidentally hit the "yes" button and it never let me change it back.
So first, go into your applications and clear defaults for your torrent app and make sure you hit "no" when that prompt shows.
If that doesn't help, I would recommend rooting and uninstalling the Knox apps using Titanium Backup.
That's what I did and torrents work fine for me.

Try downloading/starting the torrent on WiFi then switching to 4G for the actual download. My school blocks torrent sites and apps so I do the opposite. I get on 4Glte and find my torrent, start the download, then switch back to school WiFi.

not to hijack the thread but what torrent apps are you guys using on your phones? And is this to download the torrent to your phone or somehow use your phones torrent app to download the torrent at home?

My torrents stopped on the phone also.. Is this due to the kitkat, I used atorrent before with no issues

TTorrent pro, have 64gb SD card plus the SD card fix
My LTE is faster then my home crap internet, I easily hit 30gb on tmobile
For home on rare times
Utorrent remote app

Kickasstorrents off the play store and u torrent work just fine on my stock 4.3 not rooted.

You might try to simply change the download destination, from external sd card to internal, for me it did the trick, even with the fix..

with kickass torrent (download it by goin to the website off the note 3 and a pop up will come up asking to download the app) you can download movies, music and whatever straight from the app....used about 67gb last month :angel:
