Recovery question w/new root - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I rooted with revolutionary and am now s-off with su and clockwork recovery. I assume I can recover one of my old cw backups without any issues, correct?

I'm guessing as long as you were s-off when you made the nand it should be all good!

as long as you are on the same exact phone that made the backups in the first place

Now all I need to do is remember which ones are which, I have like 6 backups, 3 in CW and 3 in RA!

Also make sure your MD5's are intact too!

STOP!!!!!!!! Do not restore a Wimax partition from another phone. If you do you will break your 4G. Otherwise yes you can restore a backup from your old phone. Just remove the Wimax image.

fool root what recovery is the stock one?

I have been using the stock recovery since the begining and I keep seeing posts about Ra and Clockwork. I know what they are but why are they better then the stock recovery? Not curious as to which should I use just curious why everyone is using them when my stock recovery has done all thats asked of it thus far.
Never used stock recovery so I don't know what capabilities it has. As for Amon Ra, in addition to flashing custom roms and mods, you can mount your SD card to your computer, partition your SD card, wipe all data and do entire system backups.

I'm pretty sure you can do all of that with Clockwork as well. Or at least with ADB.
Is clockwork the stock recovery then?

if I understand you correctly, it depends how you rooted. For example, if you flashed recovery through Simpleroot OTA, then it flashed clockwork. If you install Rom Manager, it also uses clockwork, but has the option to flash AR instead (although a lot of the functionality of rom manager will be gone)
To calrify, the HTC "STOCK" recovery is unuseable to users like us. It is locked. This is why we root users need a custom recovery image such as Clockwork or Amon_RA. There is a custom one that you get automatically when you root with Toast's method (I think) but now SimpleRoot lets you flash Clockwork or Amon_RA on the 2nd button press of rooting...

Oh, here we go again.
I think I rooted the toast way? I wrote in the command lines and followed the 1st, 2nd and nand unlock method. I didnt load any recovery, what recovery is that? I am guessing its clockwork?

Nand unlock

Ok first off im a root noob. So...be gentle!! First i had stock froyo.no root..then i rooted via unrevoked3. So now im rooted running fresh 3.2.0.0. Love it by the way!
1. To get full nand unlock can i just run simpleroot now or is that only if i did the downgrade root method??
2. Is there a way to unroot after unlocking nand?? (I know i can unroot with just unrevoked3 now)
3. Does baked snack require nand unlocked??
I use the rom manager app for my flashing, backups now.
4. If i switch to amonra recovery in rom manager. Does it still work the same??
5. Are my backups via clockwork still available via amon ra after i switch??
Sorry lots a q's. Thanks forum

1. If you rooted with Unrevoked, use UnrEVOked Forever to NAND Unlock.
2. UnrEVOked has an S-On tool to remove the Nand Unlock(S-Off).
3. Not sure, Thought all roms required Nand unlocked?
4. Rom Manager will NOT work with Amon_RA
5. Clockwork Nandroid Backups are NOT compatible with Amon_RA.

ok for q 3, not all roms need nand unlock because they dont have very many changes to system partition.
for 5, you can pretty easily transfer clockworkmod backups to amon ra. just make a backup with amon and put the clockworkmod backup in the same format as the one you just backed up.
Thanks for the reply. And yes all roms require nand unlocked. But in unrevoked 3 it only unlocks nand long enough just to flash rom then goes back.. i think. But some roms require s-off all the time. This is what ive come to understand. Could be wrong though
Ya sorry I was probably wrong didn't do my research. I was able to use roms after unrevoked 3 without forever so u r right my bad
it is correct that unrevoked 3 allowed nand unlocked jsut long enough to flash a rom. I would look at unrevoked forever which should give you a perm nand unlock.
yuo CAN you rom manager to switch back and forth between amon ra and clockwork. you just have to remember that by default a nand from amon ra wont be seen in clockwork and vice versus. you CAN manually move the recovery but its better to not have to as when you need it you need it. ?I personally use amon ra and i have an old update.zip file that lets me flash to clockwork if i need it. (i can do this through amon ra so really just an extra step if for some reason i feel i need or want to try clockwork.
one last thing you should post questions int he Q&A forum in the future. development is intended to be a place where developers post the things they have developed. i know it can be confusing but best way to figure it out if it is a question on a specific development tool/rom post it int he thread for that tool/rom or post it in the Q&A area if it is a general question always psot it in Q&A.
hope you get everything worked out

[Q] Nandroid restore after OTA - is it possible?

I had my Evo (android 2.2) rooted with unrevoked forever but had to take it in to Sprint. I unrooted with the S-ON zip and then flashed the closest PC36IMG.zip that I could find on the forums. Finally, I did a factory restore and applied the OTA (3.70.651.1).
I've got the phone back now, but ever since the flash my 4G refuses to connect. I suspect I might have messed up my RSA keys.
I have a recent nandroid backup, but I'm afraid to restore it because the PC36IMG.zip updated my radios. My question is: is it safe to restore?
I'm aware that I'll have to re-root and install clockworkmod again.
I'm a long time reader, first time poster, and I appreciate your input
Heck, if you're able to re-root, it wont matter. Once you're S-OFF, simply reflash the radio, PRI, NV & WIMAX that you had before you unrooted and then restore your nandroid backup. You *should* be fine afterwards. By the way, the radios are independent of roms so it's not like your baseband, PRI, NV & HBOOT was backed up when you made your nandroid backup with the WIMAX being the only exception and that is if it was selected to be a part of the backup. Having said that, if you are not able to re-root then I would not attempt to restore a nandroid backup.

Alright, thanks! I won't be able to downgrade the hboot, but I'll give it a try nonetheless. I'm assuming that bricking the phone's unlikely as long as the downgrades themselves are successful. I'd just have to reinstall what I've got now if the backed up ROM is incompatible, right?
Edit: I've got the wimax.img in my nandroid backup
If you have the OTA, and its s-on as you said, you can't root it as of yet.

Do you know which OTA that was? I have a feeling that I didn't get the latest one, since I'm not on Gingerbread.
I did get some strange results after running Unrevoked - I have S-OFF but I get the red triangle/exclamation point when booting into recovery and I don't have root.
If you are S-Off then you just need to reflash the recovery. Once you do that you should be able to reload your nand backup.

It seems like you do not have a custom recovery flashed.
User ROMManager to install Amon or Clockwork.
As long as you are S-Off still, then you will be able to reboot into the recovery of your choice.(Didn't see you didn't have root)
Try rerunning UnrEVOked.

You don't have a recovery; http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19699565/PC36IMG.zip Download that, place on the root of your sd card, boot into the bootloader, apply update, reboot, reboot in recovery, and you'll be on Amon_ra 2.3 recovery.

I've tried UnrEVOked three times, all to no avail. Still the same result.
And yeah, I tried ROMManager + Superuser from the Market but they didn't work. Definitely no root.
I figure that I should be able to push clockworkmod using fastboot from my computer. I'm having a bit of trouble tracking down the right recovery image though.

Ah that one got posted as I was typing... thanks for the upload. I'll try it now.
It worked! Thanks teh roxxorz. Now I'll go ahead and actually get superuser, install CWM, then restore the backup and hope for the best with 4G
Update: I'm done and everything works flawlessly. Including 4G. If anyone has the same question, I can tell you that it's definitely possible to restore to a nandroid backup, provided that the radios are reasonably close to the originals.

[Q] Restoring AR-Recovery backup with CWM?

Hi Guys,
I Rooted my HTC Desire using Unrevoked Here
http://androidforums.com/desire-all...nrevoked-windows-updated-20th-may-2011-a.html
after that I saw AR-Recovery (via recovery-RA-desire-v2.0.1.img) and there I created a Nandroid Backup. After creating a backup I saw Nandroid folder made in my SD card with backup inside.
Last night I S-OFF my HTC desire using AphaRev 1.08 and when it asked to isntall CWM Recovery during process, I replied YES..
Now I have CWM Recovery, when I go to it to restore my ROM, it cant locate and use my Previouis backups created with AR-Recovery.
Any Way I can restore those backups since I had lots of applications and settings done with that and I cant go through the whole process from Zero again....
And If I restore the backups when I created before S-OFF, will that turn my Phone S-ON again?
Well, you can flash AmonRa via Fastboot Commander.
Or with unrevoked V3.21

I dont know why ppl are mad about CWM Recovery?
I would love to flash AmonRA Recovery.. its just amazing... creates and restores backup so quick.. CWM takes so much time... But still I will install CWM recovery because it ahs become universal recovery
Is there any way I can one time Restore my backup restored with AmonRA recov ery without flashing it? Like some Fastboot stuff..?

This issue is intimately tied to the inner workings of the recoveries which are obviously different. I don't believe that it's a good idea to restore backups made with a different recovery.
If you restore an amonra backup with clockworkmod or reverse, you will get an usb brick.

ok I might just flash AmonRa recovery.. can anyone give me a link on how to do that?
EDIT: Found it on youtube.. Thanks all..

custom recovery

when i rooted my evo about a week ago i followed instructions to the t for the ENERGY sense rom. i use revolution-0.4 i think that included clockwork mod for the custom recovery. i was thinking of switching to amon ra recovery. can i jsut download and flash it or will that cause problems? if so what do i need to do prior to switching recovery tools?
All you need to do to switch recoveries is download Amon Ra. Rename it to PC36IMG.zip. Then put it on the root of your sdcard. Boot into bootloader and it will ask you to update, press volume up for "yes" and bam your done. Then delete the PC36IMG.zip. (if it doesn't ask you to update when you boot into the bootloader, start your phone back up and remove the ".zip" from the recovery you renamed.

Remember that if you have any backups with your current recovery, theres a chance the new one will not be able to verify the MD5SUM and restore your current backups.

Theres a strong possibility, they are 2 different recoveries.I know from experience a few times, but then again weirder things have happened, all i can say is you can try.
