Good news everyone, Google buys Motorola! Let's hope we get more frequent OS updates now!

Love they did it just to make everyone step up their game.

Wow. This costs more than the nortel patents, but it actually gives google something concrete, not just ammunition against patent trolls. The big change this shows though is google stepping into the hardware side. The questions are:
1: will motorola phones become the new android standard? No more samsung or HTC nexus phones?
2: will google customer service improve? I haven't dealt with motorola before so I dunno how they handle customers.
Yada yada tapped
Blimey, lets hope they appreciate the Defy and not forget about it.

I wouldn't count on them supporting such an "old" device. I guess it would only be noticable on future devices. Does this move turn them automatically in GEDs?

I'm sure, they want to have only Android running on their phones, and opening up the bootloaders, also lets you install other operating systems :/
But, as i already said, i hope they still unlock the bootloaders.

Yeah - I'm hoping it's that they strip Blur out. In the absence of that, at least replace the components with leaner services from The Goog.
Let's just hope they don't decide to make Blur into an Android-wide "feature".

Called HTC today. Gentleman said that google has not released 2.2 to HTC yet for development so it definitely won't be released on 23rd (today). He said when they have it, there will be a schedule released on the front page of htc.com/www/

I don't want to use words like other people about lack of google's informations about any release date, unprofessionnal support, htc support etc... I'm sure they would better hire some of you guys to help them! You are the one which are giving us what we need, not google nor htc. I'm sorry, but feeling like moving to another OS, being iOS or WM7... too disappointed, sorry.
The only people you should be disappointed in are the rumourmongerers who got you thinking that some official source had promised to get you FroYo on 23 June.

You're right jstegeman... Even by myself trusting and hoping these. But I had hope in Google as well and not having any fix release date look to me unprofessionnal... the term "shortly" used by them can mean days, weeks, months... Is it so difficult to say the release date will be the xx of xx year xx and keep that date?
Sorry but this might come from my Swiss habits, having the clock's at the right time, no improvisation, organization... I hate "not knowing" and am quite impatient lol

Do you really think that Google lets HTC wait for release like the rest of us? They have been working on 2.2 from early stages too, they must if they want to release timely 2.2 devices.
Secondly, they would never ever release a froyo build before google.

Sorry Swissman,
but a new release of a OS is NOT a FIX as you defined it.
There have been fixes available on the air, and - afaik - no other os-manufacturer does release on-the-air fixes like Google does.
Moreover, you bought a mobile phone with a working os, and - always afaik - you cannot blame Google in being supposedly in delay for a new release of an OS.
What should you think then about Microsoft for Windows 7 or Apple for OS 4????? Not to talk about Meego or else.....
Please have a cup of tea and try and have a different opiniono about "unprofessionality"....

I think that Motorola wants to unlock it because bad reviews from devs.

Not to mention the bad PR they received when that schmuck handling their YouTube account posted that users should "look elsewhere because they will continue to do what works for them".
Can you believe that?! Motorola's an ungrateful b*tch! If it weren't for us, they'd have closed operations a long time ago. It's us, their Android users, that are saving their *sses!
Leaving alone that customization becomes a topic more and more important to the "technically apt" customers and a locked bootloader makes them "look elsewhere".
Maybe they also realize sometime that devs normally influence a large number of people in their consumer behavior, be it by their dev work or in their direct social environment.
Wait and see...
And hope it's retroactive and not just a new more open bootloader for new phones.
They starting to ask about bootloader!!
Lest keep asking Motorola!!

Exactly.
1. If I buy my phone from retail store (not unusual here), then there's no *partner* to concern with. So, give me an unlocked bootloader *now*?
2. They may only offer it for certain models, or certain SIM-locked models from certain operators.
I'll believe it when I see it.

ROM 2.2 works well, but do you think there will be a Android2.3 Rom for Defy? I like flashing new roms
with bootloader locked?
Simply and definitly NO...
With a unlocked bootloader, maybe
If you're talking about an official update it is hard to say...
As you can see, although there are already a few 2.3 phones around, Motorola still delays Defy 2.2 for most of the world.
So... Personally I don't think they're doing this because they wanna jump to 2.3 directly, but because they're concentrating on other things (like Atrix).
So I would rather expect an unofficial 2.3.
Cheers!

yeah maybe you are right, official update is hopeless.
Yeah very stupid for moto to tight things up. Just let advanced users playing around, and novice users bricking their phones. They won't get bad rep and would most likely get some extra sales.
Well we could use Froyo Kernel for Gingerbread, Gingbread to Froyo ist not that difference!

Hey you are chinese, then why dont you follow that thread on porting 2.3 on defy at goapk forum and let us know what is happening at the development?
a true one? probably not unless moto unlocks the bootloader, or it releases one itself (maybe, maybe not, moto ahs a bad reputation on tihs).
the current 2.2 roms are rocking 2.6.32 kernels and official 2.3 should be rocking 2.6.35 kernels.
that being said, one can run a hackish 2.3 rom with 2.6.32 kernels, i *think* it can be done but then it won't be truly 2.3
I don't think they will release official 2.3ROM because they didn't released a final 2.2. I hope, that Moto will officially unlocks the Bootloader to give us more possibilities...
I really hope that there will be a Gingerbread ROM some time in the future, preferably with the bootloader unlocked rather than the hacks for which I cannot prise the authors enough.
However, the Defy is still a great phone, also with 'just' 2.2 and that is what counts most to me. Who knows what kind of phone € 300 buys you in a year from now

Not yet
2.2 upgrade was allways announced for Q2 2011, so they're in the planning.
After that, who knows. They may offer 2.3 after 6 month or more (when 2.4 is release on they high-end phone) But I really don't expect for that today.
For me the Defy will stay on 2.2 for Motorola. The only hope it an unlocked bootlooader (officially or not)
Same here, Defy is a 2.2 device, period. A bootloader unlock would let us use 2.3 or higher but I doubt Motorola will spend more money on a new official update. Let's hope they will actually release a 2.2 ROM in a few months (the South American market should get its froYo within a month according to their schedule).
Well after the editorial of chris ziegler of engadget about motoblur they better off kill motoblur.

Lazy journalism, pointing out the obvious.
The fact he once thought Blur was good says it all IMO.
Anyway, if Motorola haven't listened to feedback from their customers, why would one blogger's opinion sway them?

On the other hand, I did speak with tmous yesterday and they said the 2.2 which is supposed to be release 'real soon' is going to be a higher end 2.2 version...whatever that means, not even the rep had a clue what that meant but I suppose that is what they are told to say.

Sounds like a large pile of BS to me.
Froyo is Froyo, Motorola aren't going to roll out some superior version of it - in fact, with Blur, if anything it's an inferior version...
i really do believe that 2.2 froyo update will come .. but 2.3 gingerbread ? nah i dont think so ... motorola is not really known for it's updates ..but if it comes my defy will be very happy to grab it ...
Motorola has already announced a Froyo update soon and I cant wait for that. Moto's history with updates and the locked bootloader doesn't give us much to hope for, but let's keep our fingers crossed! It would be amazing though!
HTC Confirms 2.3 Desire Plans
Bit of a news flash here, sorry if it's in the wrong section but this is more of an anser to an un-asked question, y'get me?
Anyway, HTC confirmed yesterday that they WILL be updating the current Desire range upto 2.3. This includes the Desire, the Z and the HD. Hope this helps with the concerns that HTC were ditching the Desire for the Desire S.
For the rest of the information, check out this page.
The link goes to CNET
*It's likely that rather than being 2.3, the Desire will be getting 2.4, which is the latest release from Google. This is no different from 2.3 but contains some very minor bugfixes.
Nice! A bit long to wait though.

no problem, I was randomly searching the Internet for any articles that could shed any light on the current Desire situation we are all going through, and I just happened to find that neat post that was only put on there today. Alas the Desire lives on, I guess with it being so popular HTC decided to make it, however I'm not expert but from a Market view of things, I seriously doubt Honeycomb will be coming to the Desire range, as none boast dual processors and with the update coming so late, it would be a large Market downside for HTC, why develop Honeycomb for a device that's waited 6 months for a 2.4 update... Anyway I'm just glad that within my first few days of being at XDA that I have been able to help people with the Desire information, I know I only sourced it, but this stops a lot of peoples worries, and it looks promising that we WILL be getting the new sense time for a beer I think xD
We re starting to feel just like the Xperia X10 users and their updates it all goes according to HTC's plan. Nevertheless its good to know we'll be getting the new sense and and Android.

I think that the reaosn why it's taking so long really lies with Google. If they hadn't of had the 2.3 exclusivity with the Nexus S, then the chances are we would have our update much quicker. However HTC should be concentrating on Software just as much as new Products. Existing customers are just as important as potentially new Customers, and at the moment it looks like they are focusing their business on creating new products, and not updating the current ones. Not a good business plan at all.

That's one of the benefits of De-branding. My HTC Desire came branded with the Orange software (which left me with 100MB of free space) I de-braded, updated to Froyo 2.2 and had something like 143MB of free space left, and whenever HTC release an update I immidiatley recieve it. My HTC has Orange logo's on it and everything, but it's de-branded.

The more of us that contact them and ask the question the better chance we have of seeing an Android L release of the stock software.

Just tell them you represent XDA!
When I was contacting LG support for SD card bug, I asked if they are planning for android L, their response was that they will patch SD bug, but do not plan to upgrade android version...but who knows, we must believe. And if not, custom ROM will work
The Google Play Edition will ( or should) be upgraded, as the upgrade will fall into the respective timeframe that they allow for the support of gpe devices. Guess we'll see.
