Hey Peeps, quick question. Received a notice on my Verizon Incredible 2 today (8/14) saying that an update was coming through. It appeared forced, as there was way to fully cancel it. I was given the choice to defer it, but could only do so for 5 days. 2 questions:
1. Anyone know what this update is? Is Verizon forcing us to update to gb (2.3), or is it something else?
2. How do I permanently avoid the update? I've got no idea if I can choose to defer again after 5 days, and would much rather not have the update, if possible.
My DINC2 is rooted (using AlphaRevX, and the sweet patch packaged on the forums here). Any help would be much appreciated.
You can freeze or delete one of the main processes in charge of ota updates and device management. Com.Smithmicro.something.

Thanks much for the idea. It looks like the process was Com.Smithmicro.dm. I've frozen it with bloatfreezer, and will report back 5 days from now, as to what happens with it. To the positive, when I choose to "install deferred update" from the settings menu, nothing happens now. I'm going to take that as a good sign.
If you had accepted, clockwork would have blocked it.

Yikes! I chose to defer and I have a whole new problem now. When I turn my phone on I get about 5 to 10 seconds t before it says Shutting Down. Then it tries to update automatically. I get stuck on a droid screen with a blue droid, triangle & exclamation point. Remove battery. Repeat. I can still boot into recovery, any help?

If you can boot into recovery, try wiping your cache.
Thanks. I would try that but I decided to re flash the ROM and use titanium backup. So I got it frozen and all my apps restored. Thanks for the response, maybe I will restore and try that just so people can know for trouble shooting.
I just checked and no update. Ever since going to GB my phone has been super buggy. Clock, gmail, freezes, etc. No major problems before that. Hopefully this is a nice patch. Anyone else get an update?

I can confirm the same thing. blue triangle it try to auto update never even game me a conformation prompt to try and decline.
I was using the rmk gingersense debloated ( etc ) rom. Maybe it was just never disabled on that rom. Worst case just flash something else.

k i read about an app called spare parts on here so i figured hey i'll try it out. i did saw what extra setting were there and decided i wasn't gonna use it didn't even change any settings.
after opening the app and then pressing home something wierd happened i saw a white screen with HTC in green in the center for about 3-5 seconds my backround with a loading pop-up and nothing else for about another 3-5 seconds. this is happening every time i press the home button or exit out of an app. it's getting infuriating, i'm also getting wicked bad lagg in sense and lot's of hang up's and force closes. also wicked bad battery life. i don't know what to do to fix it.
i have the OTA and rooted last night with unrevoked method, this morning is when i tried the app around 10 or 11 not sure last couple days is a blur.

get used to it if you intend to use sense, the screen you speak of is sort of like the htc sense/rosie intro. If you dont like it you can go vanilla and use another launcher, like adw froyo, launcherpro, or even the extra launcher thats included....
Sounds like you enabled aggressive handling of apps. Can you get in there to turn it off?

Or just do a factory reset.
also, you are experiencing some isolated problems which leads me to beleive the issue is software related rather than hardware.I have experienced NOT ONE of the issues you speak of. Make sure you update prl. I can vouch for that one. My data was 90% broken till i did. Also try and wipe data, that would prolly fix everything as well.....FYI, i cannot gurantee the problem lies with your hardware OR software. Thats just my diagnosis. Good luck

Heh...I did that once on my hero. I know the feeling.
some versions of spare parts come with a launcher. the problem is that when you press the home button now, it's trying to goof with /system, which is forcing the reboot. even though you may be rooted, you don't have rw privileges in /system while messing with android.
you may be able to get away with accessing /system and erasing your goofy installed spare parts app. you'll have to do that through adb shell, and the custom recovery. do a search for 'remove apps', you should find it easily enough. i think the thread was moved from dev to general, or q and a.
anything that will call a write to /system (i.e. a rooted app that needs access to it to work right) has the potential to cause the phone to reboot. when i installed adfree, it had the same effect. trying to install hosts (which write to /system/etc) caused a reboot. i had to install hosts through recovery with a push after remount.
hope that helps
Hmm I installed autokiller and it appears to work doesn't mess with anything that is
I really dunno a way of testing that its actually working though if you where looking for a way to manage memory
I was using a task killer but read up on stuff and turned it off just keeping it in case I need it for something that wont close and the phone is running great and battery life keeps getting better and better.

People you need to be careful with autokillers!
Make sure that you are not closing down sense items.
Put anything that says htc or sense on ignore.
If not you are shutting down parts of sense. Then sense has to reboot. Witch is why you see the white screen with the htc logo in the middle.
I honestly cannot find the cause of this. I Have tried everything in my power to try to fix this problem but absolutely nothing seems to work. When using my phone regularly (only on froyo) my phone will get very very hot and then start a reboot loop where it keeps rebooting and rebooting and rebooting. I have the official 2.2 update. Currently not rooted but S-OFF. I wanted to see if the root was causing any problems but im still getting the reboots. I Love my Inc. and i love the AMOLED screen. I want to be able to fix this problem so i dont get stuck with a ****ty replacement. PLEEZ HELP MEEZ

I get this problem all of the time and I will tell you it has nothing to do with root. In fact, I'm not sure it is even a software issue. I have done multiple factory resets to try to troubleshoot the problem.
There is a thread at AndroidForums about it that I am currently running, but I can't link to it evidently. Look in the Support section for the Incredible.
How did you update? You're running a 2.xx radio, right?
If your problems are surviving a full wipe + RUU, the most likely culprit is that your hardware is failing.
It's a full wipe stock 2.2 and yes I have the newest radio
I was having the same issue with my phone on Stock 2.1, Stock 2.2, custom ROMs, etc. No software updates/configurations would make the random reboots stop. Anything that taxed the CPU seemed to cause my reboots. The easiest way to reproduce was to just start GPS'ing somewhere. Within minutes, the phone would go into a reboot loop that would usually only stop after a battery pull.
I took the phone into VZW while it was doing a reboot loop, showed it to them, and they put in a replacement order for me. The replacement (yes, it's a refurb) has been rock solid over a few days of heavy use. I read that if you had an AMOLED screen, then you're replacement will also be AMOLED.
tl;dr; - random reboots on stock ROM with no mods is probably a hardware failure. Go with a refurb.
Decided to go to VZW and order a replacement. They told me it would be a new phone and not a refurb but I don't trust them. Anyways it comes Thursday. I shall report back my friends. I still find this problem to be so odd
After the ICS update on my non-rooted phone, the phone seems to be freezing
up and becoming unresponsive. After a while it looks like the radio "resets", all
the icons disappear in the top bar (signal, wifi, data) and it shows no service.
Then slowly one by one they all come back and I can use the phone again.
Sometimes I receive the "System is not responding" dialog box, but not always.
There is not one particular program it is doing this in, it can be something as
simple as pulling down the notification bar that will cause the freeze.
Any suggestions are appreciated, I couldn't find anyone else with the same issue.
Thanks.
Try:
Turn off phone
Take out SIM
Put SIM back
Turn on
I've had my phone act weird with respect to signal, wifi and data when this was the issue. Worth a shot, at the very least.

Thank you for the response.
Tried this and had the system is unresponsive issue right on reboot. If I do a
factory reset, does it reset to the current firmware or what was originally on the
phone (probably a really stupid question). I wonder if some other program isn't
ICS compatible and is doing something in the background. Doesn't look like
anyone else is having this same issue.

If you do a factory reset and it was the standard Kies legit update from Tmo, it won't downgrade your phone - will just re-install a fresh copy of your ICS. Did you do a restore of apps from your last version (gb?) with data? That could cause problems I would think..

Yes I did the legit update on Kies, standard stock phone un-rooted.
Do I need to backup pictures before the reset, its been a while since
I had to do this.
At this point, I think its worth a try to wipe it clean and clear out all the
data.

wipe the dalvik cache and cache then reboot
I did a factory reset and that solved the issue.
Thanks for all the assistance.
I've done a factory reset and wiped the cache more than once already and i still get a force close or unresponsive, enough that its really irritating me now. Any advice? And also, when texting, the typing responds very slow.

Are you letting it sit for like 10 minutes during first boot after factory reset then reboot again before setting up. Its likely that some scripts are running from the initial installation and you need to let it rot until its done..
I did exactly that, thanks for the advice. Hoping that may fix the problem. I wiped the cache and factory reset, then let the phone sit for a good while before going through the play store and re-installing everything.
This issue just resurfaced again. The last 2 days I am getting the freezing, radio reboot and android process not responding.
No one else having this issue?
I think I'm in the same boat. I was stock GB, and just did the mini OTA update (which was great). A few days later ICS became available via Kies from T-Mobile, and I "upgraded".
Since the upgrade my phone is laggy, screen is significantly less responsive and also my battery life is less than before.
I have NOT done a factory reset of my phone yes (plan on doing that today), but even with that I have read that performance does not improve.
Ideally, I would love to return back to the stock tmobile gb firmware. However, even after literally 2 hours of reading I can't find the "how-to" and files I need.
I would appreciate any assistance.
t989 chip lags
ive notice this happen on my tmobile galaxy s2. i think it has to do with the Qualcomm chip on tmobiles stock roms.
When i had sprint i bought my girlfriend a galaxy s2 on the sprint network which runs the samsung exynos chip. She never complained about any lag or freezing whatsoever. I then left sprint because of their garbage network and joined tmobile.
bought 2 galaxy s2s and i noticed the lag almost immediately. The phone has random lag spikes as well as freezing and force closes. It had it on stock gingerbread and it has it on stock ICS too.
My girlfriend complains about freezing all the time so i decided to root her phone too. Right now im testing DarkSides v7 rom and if its pretty good in performance i will flash her phone with it too. So far it has been pretty snappy and everything works.

For the past 4 days my Note 2 has randomly rebooted at least once a day. I wasn't using the device for most of the reboots and just noticed that it rebooted because of battery drops. I don't really know what could be the cause since I don't remember changing anything recently. Is there any way I can diagnose this without root?
How about just flash stock rom? If you dont have lots of apps which you've used, then it should take care of problem without needing titanium backup which needs root. Just save ur data using kies and flash stock rom from sammy.

I'm actually currently on stock and unrooted. I was just wondering if there were ways to find out what caused the reboot such as logs and such? Or if there was an app I could install to keep track of what causes a forced reboot?

You could download alogcat from the marketplace, its free and will save a log of what's going on with your phone.
It might help find out why its happening
for me it happens cause the power button is so easy to press while phone is in pocket.
keep it pressed for some seconds by accident and phone reboots. even if screen is locked.

If your rooted run a logcat and that will tell you what happened right before the reboot, reboots are usually a Kernel Panic meaning something caused a big enough problem that it couldn't be recovered and crashed the core of Androids software "The Kernel".
As others have noted flashing a stock rom ideally via ODIN and then testing your phone may let you know if you had bad software or a hardware issue. Custom roms can have bugs that will cause kernel panic a stock rom should be 100% fine and reboot free
I find mine will sometimes reboot after copying something to the clipboard.

I had reboots on my previous unrooted HTC EVO. The problem was an app. I was able to diagnose the problem by looking at my install/update log. Basically, I uninstalled all apps back to the date I knew it was stable and waited to verify it was stable. Then added back one app only and waited. Repeat. About a week later, I added an app that caused a reboot within hours. I uninstalled it and the phone remained stable.
Here's where I found a chronological listing. If you have multiple devices, it will show all apps for all devices (tablets, vizio, phones, etc)
Google Play> My Android Apps> at the bottom My Orders & Settings.
This gives you a cronilogical listing of app installs and updates.
Mine turned out to be a call recorder app that I had put on the phone 4 weeks previous.
Seems like a Samsung issue:

I've got the same problem worth my note 2. At least I know I'm not alone.

Bad SD cards are also a notorious source for spontaneous reboots. If you have one inserted, it should be easy enough to retract it for a while to test it. ..
Note'd too from my N7100...
I'm also experiencing this issue. I'm using 4.1.1 Brazilian stock ROM here.
Even before flashing CWM (yesterday) I as going through this problem. Most times it happens when the screen is off.
Maybe changing the stock Kernel to a custom one would solve this?

This is just a theory… but give it a shot.
Every time you put it down, sounds like something has come lose inside of it. Has it been dropped at all since you bought it?
Either way, try this, for starters:
I would suspect that your battery might be a little loose. Fold a small little shred of paper up, and wedge it between the “butt end” of the battery (this opposite side of where the connector pins are) and the device. This will effectively push the battery into the pins a little more, and possible keep it from coming loose.
Also, put a small folded piece of paper directly between the battery and the back cover of the device.
The idea here is to keep the battery from moving around. This will rule out the possibility of it coming loose, and resetting.
Also, take your micro SD card out if you have one.
Are you using any custom ROMs or kernels?
Good luck, I’ll keep an eye on this thread.
Well not every time, sometimes, sometimes when I lock the phone it restarts. Yes I have dropped it couple times, and no I'm not rooTed or running custom roms or kernels. K so for now turn off automatic updating and see if the problem goes away.
Also, why are you not rooted? I would recommend doing this. There is no reason not to be at least rooted.
Also, go into your settings>application manager and wipe data on the following system apps...
Google play store
Google play services
Downloads
Then reboot the device.
