Hello XDA community,
I have the following problem. I bought an unbranded HTC Desire HD but when the Gingerbread update was released and I did not receive it and got curious what was going on.
Using CID Getter, I found out that the CID of my phone is T-MOB101 whereas it should be HTC_001 on an unbranded phone. The software information on my phone is as follows:
Android: 2.2.1
Software number: 1.72.405.3
Using the search function in this forum, I found out that the T-MOB101 CID only exists with the software number 1.32. As far as I know this means that the phone I bought was a branded phone which was overwritten with another stock rom with the software version 1.72. That means I can wait until kingdom comes regarding the Gingerbread update.
I'd really like to update to Gingerbread and fix my phone in this respect. Having conducted some research, I found out that (1) changing the CID requires to downgrade to 1.32 because I'd need to root the phone and that is not possible with 1.72. If I wanted to back up my phone, e.g. with Titanium Backup, (2) I'd need to root it as well and, thus, downgrade to 1.32. Also, if I wanted to backup my current ROM with ROM Manager, I'd need the required privilidges and root and, therefore before, downgrade the phone.
If I have to go through this trouble, I think, I could install a custom rom as well (e.g. Virtuous Unity as I'd like to have Sense 3.0). I've found out that I always have to downgrade no matter which option I choose because I need to be able to root the phone and, apparently, that's not possible with 1.72. - Is all of the above concluded correctly?
In fact, I'd just like to install a custom rom with sense 3.0 now and be able to flash back to the stock rom, just in case I'd ever need to meet the requirements for warranty, and backup the files I need to backup (except for data which I can synchronize from the Google server, of course).
Does anyone have an optimal procedure of solution at hand? - I'd be very grateful. - Thank you very much in advance.
Cheers,
B-Ball
ok...if you say you're phone is branded you need to create a goldcard first to downgrade and i believe it already exists a thread for downgrading...just do a search
Well, I am not sure if you can still call my phone a "branded" one due to the above facts. I assume it was branded and then an unbranded stock rom with the software version 1.72 was installed but the CID was not changed.
However, do you think there is a way for me to be able to install a custom rom with sense 3.0 and be able to flash back to a strock rom at a later point if I have to downgrade first in order to get root rights?
Yes you will have to downgrade first to be able to get root rights and change the CID.
To get back to stock you have to use a RUU. These are official HTC utilities that wipe out all the changes (just about) that you made to your phone and make it stock. There is a thread somewhere for these. I think in Development.

You need the official RUU to go back to stock and if you want to change the CID you still need to root your device

Hello Guys
Just bought my Desire - but it was pre-installed with the 2.2, is there any easy solution for rooting this?
Downgrade then use unrevoked
Hi Numsefis,
you need to downgrade your phones HBOOT. Read this: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=745903
DaCe
okay.. that's great, but hoped that there would be an easier solution, for the HBOOT 0,92.. But i'll root it and install new firmware... Will you prefer the OpenDesire or Stock ROM?
you will loose your ROM and all settings. The .zip contains a Stock 2.1 ROM. After the downgrade you need to unrevoke and flash a new one.
I'm using this: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=741775
very nice, will it be possible to make a backup with the HTC function before root, and then restore when rooted?
What's the Radio package for?
The Backup only stores personal Data. Your ROM will be gone. After unrevoking your phone you will have the Nandroid BackUp.
Basically, the radio rom is the firmware that runs the phone, wireless and blutooth portions of the phone. Newer versions are likly to improve performance or fix bugs.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=687464
OK thanks....
Then i root the phone, install 2,2 then make a nandroid backup when the phone is configured... And also install the radio fix...
Hopefully i can get paid apps in my market
downgrade -> unrevoke -> radio -> rom -> enjoy

ps: sry for double post
Thx alot for the info, but my phone was running HBOOT 0,92, so i think it's okay
from my link
Q. What is the difference between HBOOT 0.83 and 0.92?
A. 0.92 is installed if you apply the official OTA froyo update. If you care about rooting and custom ROMs, you want to avoid the OTA update currently.
Q. How do I downgrade to HBOOT 0.80?
A. Don't - there is no reason to. If you want to root or use a custom ROM or debrand there is no need to. If you have an SLCD screen, the current method for downgrading will break your screen.
Q. Can I debrand my phone with HBOOT 0.83?
A. Yes. If your software version is 1.21.405.2 or lower (for example, branded O2 phones), you can simply use this RUU with a goldcard to debrand and install stock 1.21.405.2. You can then upgrade to OTA froyo if you wish to. This RUU will also flash your HBOOT to 0.83.

have you installed the USB Driver like the html document says?
Yep, got it working, the guide i read, missed a step, that the ADB driver should be installed under Restore....
Now i got my phone rooted, and installed the Market fix... BUT i can't see that the market is unlocked for all programs???
hello,
i bought HTC Desire A8181 (from carphonewarehouse, UK), it came with 2.1-update 1, now it is 2.2 (2.29.405.5). i want to play with custom ROM. the following questions came to my mind. if I want to go back to untouched ROM? [i have not flashed my fone with custom ROM yet, but I want to. I want to understand the options. its a precautionary step I am taking]
1. how do I identify the RUU number for HTC A8181?
2. what is signed RUU?
3. if rooted with unrevoked3 but not flashed custom ROM can i receive HTC OTA updates?
5. what really changes when i root with unrevoked3?
sorry if my quarries sounds stupid, i am new to android, and learning the way of android.
tanx a lot
RUU = ROM Upgrade Utility
You match it to the version on your phone (2.29.405.5) - simple!!

Once rooted you CAN'T get OTA updates as it'll screw things up

1) An RUU doesn't have a 'number' I am aware of, generally they are region or network provider specific. So being in England I would use the stock O2, Vodafone, Orange etc, RUU, or use any non-specific WWE (World Wide English) RUU.
2) A signed RUU is one that hasn't been modified and will run on any stock phone, the phone will only let you install a non modified RUU by default, I believe. (My definition maybe a little off here)
3) If you have changed nothing on the phone from stock, you can still recieve OTA updates, yes. Installing a custom ROM will stop you being able to use the OTA update feature.
5, lol) And to quote binary visions from AndroidForums
Rooting it doesn't fundamentally change the phone (it only provides the ability to fundamentally change the phone)

Essentially it's just an app in the app drawer than enables you to have administrative control over your phone. If you never use a program that requires 'root' access as it's known, It'll do nothing. If a program requires 'root' access, it'll just give you the ability to run it. Kinda like a school that locks the Control Panel on Windows from the school kids, stopping them from changing screen resolution and messing about with the PC.

Eddy, is this ruu rootable ? what hboot does it give you, please ? can it be s-offed with alpharev 1.8 ?
1. Yes
2. HBOOT 0.93
3. Yes
re
thanks EddyOS and Kalavere.
I m feeling a bit confidant now.
but......................................
what is the meaning
[Kalavere] "If you have changed nothing on the phone from stock, you can still recieve OTA updates" (no custom rom)
and
[EddyOS] "Once rooted you CAN'T get OTA updates as it'll screw things up"
another stupid question - if i install any custom rom will it change IMEI no?
if i install RUU after, will it change IMEI no. (will any device specific number change)?
tanxa lot
IMEI can't be changed as it's hardcoded onto the phone
Once rooted it's not recommended to accept an OTA update, it'll remove root but not be 100% unrooted and cause more issues than it's worth so don't do it
Hi,
I recently received my DHD branded to '3' and all i wanted to do was revet to the official htc unbranded version.
After reading up on the subject i created a gold card and downgraded to 1.31.405.6 which seeems to have done the trick with regard to unbranding.
The question i have is do i need to go through all the other steps i keep reading about (s-off, radio-off etc.) if i just want the phone to stay unbranded, or can i now carry on using the phone as normal?
If i am able to carry on, am i ok to upgrade to the latest htc unbranded version (via OTA or through htc sync) or will that cause me problems?
Thanks
If you followed the guide, you are currently using 1.32.405.6. The 1.31.405.6 is just to fool the device
You can use it normally, no problem. You can change the CID to HTC__001 (unbranded) using Radio S-OFF Tool, but you do not have to do Radio S-OFF if you do not want to. Just use the Stock CID option. You only need Visionary temproot. CID = carrier ID. Radio Tool can also Sim Unlock your device if it is locked.
Ok So i need to install visionary and do the temp root (i take it i don't need to permaroot after this?)
Then open easy radio tool and change the CID to htc_001.
After this is done is my phone in a completely unbranded state (as if i has bought it that way)? If so am i safe to update the phone via official htc methods?
Also what would i have to do in order to restore the phone to branded (in the event i needed to send it back)? Has the gold card/downgrade prcedure i followed made a back up of the branded software?
Sorry for all the questions, it's just i want to be clear before i carry it all out!
You do not need to permroot. After you set CID to HTC_001, you can use WWE HTC RUUs normally, but you cannot receive OTAs due to stupid "dual" CID in branded phones.
When you want to return to branded, just get stock RUU from XDA, change your CID to stock (you can find it [stock] out via terminal emulator, type "getprop ro.cid") and run the RUU. Downgrade method does not back up your stock ROM, it is unfortunately not possible to make a backup at that point.
Ok i have used visionary to temproot and the used easy radio tool's stock cid option to change it to HTC_001.
How do i go about updating to the latest htc unbranded firmware now? i assumed i could go through the phone now it is unbranded but it came back saying the phone was up to date with 1.32.405.6 on it! Also you have stated below i am unable to update in this way.
All is i want is the latest official firmware and the ability to easily update when any future releases come out
Thanks for your help so far - really appreciated!
There is no newer ROM available, HTC pulled the update due to bugs and problems.
You can however use 1.72.405.3 RUU to update, get that from the dev subforum.

is 1.72.405.3 the version you said was pulled by htc?
I want to change from 1.32.707.5 to 1.32.405.6 since I couldn't get some needed apps like Google Maps 5.1 from market due to the region my phone came from Asia, can I just
temproot to achieve this or it requires permroot using visionary to do this task

Yes, it was out there for a couple of weeks maybe, but then it just disappeared.
Hi I would like to know if there would be a problem if I flash the official rue of an Asian desire z with a european version or vice versa?
I bought my phone second hand and I decided to flash the 1.34.707.1 version into my originally 1.72 desire z. Now my phone cannot find updates. It keeps telling me that there is no update even if check manually.
I know that I can flash a higher version by downloading a higher rue version but what I wanted to find out if I can no longer receive ota updates because of what I did.
Since when I was in 1.72 my phone did not notify me of the 1.82 update too...
I don't know what's wrong.. Please help. Thank you.
I think if you are SuperCID and S-Off, it would work. Otherwise, it won't let you flash the ROM from another region.
Also, if you flash an official ROM, you will lose root, and you can't get it back on any ROM version higher than 1.34. For this reason, if you downgraded to 1.34 for purposes of rooting, you don't want the OTA updates, anyway.
If you're rooted and S-Off, and you want a more updated ROM version, just flash the Virtuous custom ROM. Its mostly stock 1.85, but rooted, and with a few cool added features and some optimizations.
Hi, the thing is I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to rooting. I read the posts here specifically in the wii section and I don't think I have the skills to pull it off and risk bricking my phone.
I think my phone is not rooted or it was before but not anymore, since as mentioned I flashed an official ruu.
So basically, I should still be able to receive OTA's from HTC right? I was wondering why my phone keeps telling me there's no update when the software number is 1.34 stock and not rooted. Shouldn't it notify me that there's an update at least regardless of whether I want to or not?
If you are not rooted, why did you downgrade to 1.34?
I also don't understand why you want to flash the RUU from a different region. If you aren't SuperCID and S-Off it won't work. Why not just flash the latest official RUU for your phone versions/region if you want to be updated and don't care about root?
I'm not sure why your OTA's don't work. I'm still on 1.34 (well, back to it), and I still get notifications to update.

@redpoint73
I bought the phone from a friend of mine. I noticed that it had eng hboot and had s-off.
I have zero knowledge about rooting. When the gingerbread test rom for the desire z came out, I flashed the pc10img.zip via the bootloader, however since it was very buggy and laggy, I decided to flash stock desire z rom.
Having no knowledge about rooting I read some of the threads in this forum and learned that flashing an official rom i.e. the RUU would be the easiest way to return back to stock.
It worked, I am using stock rom. I experimented and found out that I can flash any of the RUU, so I chose any of the WWE release. I decided to flash an older firmware version specifically, the 1.34.707.1.
Now the problem is my phone doesn't prompt me with an update, even after checking in about phone > check for update.
I still have s-off but eng hboot is gone. To clarify I was not the one who rooted the phone, so I have no idea what to do.
Is it possible that the previous owner tweaked something in the phone that would absolutely prevent it from receiving OTA?
I am just worried since I have a feeling that the gingerbread OTA will be released in a few weeks since the update for the Desire HD is already out.
Please help and thank you again. I extremely as a NOOB!

I wouldn't worry about getting the official Gingerbread ROM OTA. It will probably be posted here or at shipped-roms.com long before you would get it OTA.
Hello, i have just had the 2.3.5 update with 3.0 sense and i wish to go back to what i had previously.
This was 2.3.3 i believe. I was up to date before receiving the above update.
I have an ORANGE branded device with all security in place. I don't wish to de-brand or s-off etc... I'm hoping that i can simply download a .exe file of the older ROM and install, overwrite, then smile.
Will it be that simple? I've looked high and low for Genuine Orange roms but can not find any. Could someone point me in the right direction please?
Many thanks.
Unfortunately you will have to root and s-off your phone, then install the earlier rom, then un-root and s-on your phone. I might be wrong but look for the wwe version of the orange rom
I could not just install the older genuine rom over the newer genuine rom?
No, only updates can be applied as far as I know. It doesn't take long to root and s-off tho, then you can out your older rom on
