[Q] Hardware - Soft keys do not work - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Evo (rooted, stock rom) just recently started acting weird. The permanent soft keys (home, menu, back, seach) stopped responding to touch intermittently. I tried going back to a previous nandroid but no go. the back lights do light up but do not respond to touch. Right now, though, they seem to be working properly
Is there a connection loose inside the phone? Has anyone come across/solved this?

[Q] HTC Incredible Home button glitching out

I've seen similar threads on other devices but I'm not 100% sure this is the same problem...
My girlfriend's phone has been glitching out massively lately. By glitching out, I mean that it appears as if some invisible force is pressing and holding down the Home button. You can feel the phone vibrate in your hand as if you're pressing the buttons and it brings up the Recently Used Applications menu. If you try to press any other button to escape out of it, the phone doesn't do anything until it finishes with its seizure. Usually if you power it off for a few seconds, it will resolve the issue.
She is running non-rooted and stock. I can't say for sure what version of Android or Sense she's running right now, however I can provide that information when I can receive it from her. She recently dropped her phone that resulted in a shattered screen. I replaced the glass on Saturday and noticed the glitch myself afterwards (which makes me worried that the ribbon cable that controls those buttons was damaged or not properly set), however she tells me that the phone was doing this before she dropped it.
She's not running an application killer (I read that this might be the cause of this problem) and I'm hoping that installing a custom ROM on it will fix the problem. Does anyone else have this problem or know a solution?
Thanks,
KoolKris

[Q] Touch buttons problems

Hi guys, I have a strange problem since yesterday morning: Touch buttons don't work anymore. When I press them it's like i press the bottom of the screen, for example if I'm in the home screen, pressing the "home" button will open the menu, and if I press the "search" button the phone opens the personalize menĂ¹. The phone didn't dropped (not recently as well) and the previous evening it functioned without problems, I played with games and all buttons worked. I've tried doing a factory reset, but it didn't solve the problem and it made the boot of the phone impossible (it stucked on the ROM splash screen endlessy) so I flashed another ROM through recovery but with no results, the phone works well in all of its functionality except for the touch buttons.
Can you help me with this problem? My phone is rooted so I'd like to not sending it to HTC for warranty reparation...

Click to collapse
I'm afraid but that's the only option left for you to send to HTC because if it is a hardware problem and you waste all of your time trying to get the buttons working and you miss the warranty time then you'll just have to throw your phone in the bin

[Q] Need help with unresponsive capacative buttons

I'll try to be as thorough as I can describing my problem in hopes that some of the smarter people here can help me find some kind of solution or workaround:
I've recently gotten a used Desire Z. The few obvious things when I first got it were:
-Phone had obviously been opened at some point, and not put back together all that well.
-From certain hints I assume the touch screen has been replaced.
-It seemed to have a completely stock (stock HTC, that is) bootloader and ROM, Gingerbread.
-The screen response was mirrored in portrait (left touch gave response to the right). A Hard Reset fixed this.
-The capacitive buttons did not respond. No vibration either.
-The optical trackpad responded normally.
In an attempt to fix things, I went through downgrading and permarooting, then installed Gen.Y VisionX B4. No problems, everything went fine and according to the guides. I performed a full wipe before installing.
The ROM runs quite smoothly on my DZ.
However, I still don't have working capacative buttons. After remapping the trackpad-click to "Back" (just to be able to use it at all), I've tried to figure out how to get them working again.
I've seen mention of a fix in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=847824 , but the file is no longer available on multiupload.
I've tried installing Enhanced_Keymaps_r3-Andromadus_Audacity.zip, which did not make the buttons work.
I've tried changing build.prop to show the Nexus-like software keys on the bottom of the screen (qemu.hw.mainkeys=0) but this didn't produce any effect at all (is this because of htc sense?).
In other words, I have a Desire Z that is hampered by the capacitive buttons not working, and no real idea how to fix it.
I've opened the screen portion of the phone and checked the cable connections, but they all seem fine.
I am at a loss.
Hopefully, someone here will laugh at my n00bness and point me to a simple solution.
Anyone? Please?
it is very possible it is hardware, if the digitizer is new and working all besides the soft keys then my best guess is the ribbion or the keypad is bad, if your familiar opening it up, as it appears you are its a simple fix and cost about 15$ on ebay or amazon.
it is possible the main flex is bad, but my bet is the keypad

Thanks guys, that's the kind of info I was hoping for.
What feels strange is that the entire touchscreen is working otherwise (to the point where touching the soft buttons will activate the function directly above it on the screen) and if the flex for the buttons where shot, I can't understand why the optical trackpad is working, as it is on the same flex...
But I guess it's possible to keep guessing forever.
Does anyone know why the on-screen softkeys that come with ICS won't work? Does sense override that?

[Q] Issues with capacitive buttons FI27

Hello Everyone,
I was wondering if anyone else is having issues with the capacitive buttons on the E4GT? I just got a new device and am currently running FI27 stock rooted. The problem I'm having is that my capacitive buttons seem to just stop working for a few seconds and then light up and start working again.
Thanks,
FallenSB
Yup happens to me on any rom I'm on, usually a lock and unlock fix it, so it's not to bothersome for me.

[Q] Soft Keys and Home Button

Hi
I have a problem with the soft keys and home button on my Note 8. They will work find responsing to both finger and s-pen touch. They then stop responding to finger touch althoug the menu and back buttons continue to respond to the s-pen. The problem is real intermittent because after a while they will start responding to finger touch again. I was on the Flex ROM and thought that this might be a problem so reverted to stock. This did not fix the problem. Has anyone had a similar issue? I thought it might be a hardware issue but when I boot into recovery the soft keys work fine.
Cheers
Richard
