if i switch from clockwork to amon_ra via ROM manager, will I lose any of my information on my phone?
Nope
sent from my Nike hating synergistic EVO!
Only the ability to restore your Clockwork nandroid backups with Amon Ra, and the ability to use the flashing functions of Rom Manager. Nothing on your rom will be changed.
Once you switch, go ahead and make a backup with Amon Ra. Leave the original three options checked and include wimax as well.
If you don't know how to flash manually there are tons of guides, and it's something you'd definitely benefit from learning.

I'm curious, who uses which and why?
*Amon. Oops
I personally use cw...but many people on this forum swear by amon bc they say it is more reliable... some roms require you to use amon to flash. ...I personally have never had issues flashing with cw...
Bottom line is that we have two good choices if you are a flashaholic

Amon-ra is my preference 0 errors. Clockwork is nice also, has its own app but people have reported a couple of flashing errors. Both are awesome all I can say is try out both see which one you like better.

I was kind of tempted with the features and GUI of Clockwork, but after reading a bit on here, it seems like Amon Ra is the reliable way to go. I'm new to Evo rooting and roms, but when I had my Nexus One, AR was absolutely the way to go. Rock freakin' solid.
Currently if you have a evo with hboot 2.02 or 2.10 the only recovery u can use after rooting is amon ra...just a fyi

Amon by far.
Amon_RA, since CWM doesn't work properly on newer hboots, and because CWM does not properly wipe partitions when you tell it to. Simple as that.

Im currently using CW...This is why I definitely want to use Ra... however when I flash it using rom manager, and then try any functions in Ra recovery is says "no zip files installed ".. any possible solutions??
I use Amon_ra because it backs up the wimax rsa keys. That's the only advantage I saw

The solution is to place your flashable .zip files to the base sdcard directory and not within a subfolder.

Like the person above said, Amon_RA 1.8.0 can only use ZIP files which are on the root of your SD card, not in a sub-folder. Version 2.0 (which Amon_RA has suggested will be coming soon-ish) will have folder navigation.
Amon Ra currently but I have used both. The reasons are clear it backs the RSA keys, and does clear when wiping.
Btw try #grep RSA /sdcard/nandroid/HT065HL*/(name of nandroid file)/wimax.img
You'll see where your RSA keys are stored in your nandroid.
I go back and forth.... I use amon ra for nandroid backups and serious flashes like radio pri nv all that jazz. I like clockwork for ease sometimes. I don't use app2sd. I use titanium to wipe davlik and repeat in either cw or amon ra just to be sure... They both have their good points. and bad

I was affected by CWM when I upgraded to 3.0. I can't flash any ROM's except for Fresh's. I've tried going through Rom Manager, manually downloading ROM, AR recovery. The ROM install will complete but when I reboot I'm still in Fresh's. I don't know what it did to my phone. I've even deleted the rom.zip and downloaded it again thinking it was a bad download. From here on out I'm permanently switching to AR so if you guys can let me know what I should do.
By the way I list my backups. I did have a backup of UD but it won't restore in CWM. Will it work if I copy the backup from CWM and move it to the Amon Ra folder? I don't want to try it and possible make things worse.

Yes I need help on this, too. I wanted to go to Myn's rom and can not at all. And I believe I read backups are not interchangeable between CW and RA.
You need to restore amon_ra 1.8 as your recovery and then reflash your rom. Cwm backups are not compatible with ra.

I tried that. I re-downloaded the ROM's, placed on the root, flashed in Amon Ra and it completes but doesn't boot up. Out hangs at the white htc evo splash screen. The CWM broke my phone.
I'm trying to avoid flashing the stock RUU and rooting again. I'm guessing there may be a file thats conflicting. By the way I deleted ROM manager permanently.

you can do this using cwm(rom manager) , if its greyed out then dl the latest amon_ra1.8 and put on the root of your sd card, then try again thru cwm. thats what worked for me.
But yea the latest cwm update isnt something to get excited about. doesnt play nice on some evo's.
stick with good ole faithful Amon_Ra and start flashing from recovery, not from some app. its always stable and not to mention wipes correctly/easily
Any tips? I need to get my AOSP rom and Sense ROM loaded.

So im runnin Clockwork custom recovery on my EVO and I hav read on several threads that using Amon RA is better. I would like to kno the reasons why and if I decide to change how would I go bout it? Please include any links in getting the Amon RA recovery and or procedures please...thanks!
Open Rom Manager and scroll down to select "Flash Alternate Recovery" clcik RA and thats it. Give it a whirl, you dont like it flash back to clockwork via Rom Manager (at top).
personally I use clockwork, only because it works with rom manager.....
I use amon ra, I had it on my moto cliq, then I had to use clockwork on my vibrant, now amon ra on my evo. I like it better. Its probably just personal preference but I have read that clockwork doesnt always do a good nandroid backup/restore, I never tried it though so im not certain. Like to guy above said, its real easy to switch back and forth though
Amon is easier to read, and its prettier.

Haven't used clock in a while but from what I remember it was more steps to get to certain things and the entire UI was a bit confusing to a new person. Now this is speaking from my hero days, lol so things may have changed!

It's preference, the general consensus that's misunderstood is that ra is better. This for me is only because my dev has nothing to do with clockwork therefore its rendered useless for me.besides updating ra recovery...
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Personally, i have and do use both, and neither is better, as they do the same thing. The 1 advantage to amon_ra is that you can select the elements of your backup, so they can be smaller, where as clockwork backs up everything by default.

You can still download rom from it [if on premium version], flash alternate recovery, and boot into recovery if on amon_ra; the only thing you can't do it automatically backup the rom from there.
OK.
I need some serious help!
I have an EVO that I rooted with UNREVOKED about a month ago
This afternoon, I tried to flash to the new Synergy Rom with the cool Sense UI, BUT!! Dumb me, who was up working all night long was not reading correctly and flashed the INCREDIBLE ROM.
Yeah Yeah I know, dumb thing
I obviously got an error and then tried to restore my Nandroid backups that I had previously made.
These caused errors too..which they never had before.
I pulled the battery and then couldn't even get into clockwork mod.
I was thankfully able to flash Clockwork MOD to at least be able to get into a recovery screen.
I did so, and flashed my Myn 2.2 ROM which thankfully installed.
Tonight, I went back to try to flash the ROM that I had originally wanted to flash and the flash was complete.
HOWEVER, when I rebooted, it just kept going to the white HTC screen, hanging and then rebooting to the white HTC screen over and over.
I tried to start all over but doing a data wipe/factory restore and to wipe the Dalvik Cache..
When I did this, I got an error:
E:Can't mount/dev/block/mmcb1k0p2
File exists.
I was able to get back to my Myn 2.2 but things like Google navigator don't work,
I hope I have explained this well enough for you guys to understand.
If there is anyone out there that can help me, I would appreciate it!!!
Thanks
Mike
You did not brick your device.
Try this out and tell me it works.
Download EVO version of your preferred Rom. Place on SD card.
Search for amon ra supersonic.
Go to the xda link once you search for it.
Download the PC36IMG.zip version of amon ra.
Place on sdcard, but not in any folders.
Make sure the file name is "PC36IMG.zip", it is case sensitive.
Turn off phone.
Reboot into hboot, by holding the volume DOWN key and power button.
Let the hboot find the PC36IMG image.
When it asks whether you want to update/flash...say yes.
It will unload the recovery image into your phone.
It will ask you if you want to reboot, say no.
Then, go to where it says recovery and click to boot into recovery.
Now you should be using amon ra v2.3.3 supersonic.
Go to wipe and wipe everything, factory reset, data, ext, android secure, everything!
If you feel frisky, wipe again!
Now, proceed to flash from zip.
Choose the Rom you downloaded in step one.
That should do the trick. Also...clockwork mod nandroid backups will not work with amon ra backups, and vice versa. Keep this in mind.

Well, when I first purchased my Evo I used clockwork mod for about a day. It caused me issues, personally, which could also be attributed to my lack of knowledge at the time. So I tried amon ra and have always been happy. My issue with cwm was that it did wipe correctly.

I have read that it is possible that you can lose your 4G keys with AMON RA. That makes me nervous...is there anyway to avoid this?
No one can guarantee that you won't lose your WiMax keys with either recovery. I have never used Clockwork on my EVO, but my keys are intact with AMON RA, and it is easy to back them up with AMON RA.
Thank you so much!!!
I have company in town and not a lot of time to play...so it is SAFE to wipe everything?
Is there anything that I shouldn't be wiping?
Android security? What is that? And is it Safe? I am just a bit nervous...but THANK YOU for your help!
Don't wipe your SD card. Yes, wipe android secure.
Android secure is a directory used by Google apps2sd, capable on froyo and above. It is where Google stores your apps once you move them to SD card. You can wipe it.

unfortunately, this did not work. I did everything that you said. I install the amon ra, and deleted everything and wiped everything that you said. I installed the new ram that I thought was a successful install. it booted to the white htc screen, and then turned itself off and right back on it went right back to that same white htc screen. It kept doing this.....other then this being a bad rom can you think of anything else I could be causing this? HELP!

What version of RA do u have? I had a version that have options for clearing a bunch of partitions. I'm pretty sure its there under advanced or something... Clear system partition? Out won't hurt anything, but you have to flash a rom after that or there will be nothing to boot to

sorry I am not rooted right now. I received a replacement phone because of a broken micro USB and it came with 2.3.3. Do you see an option for wipe system partition? or format system partition?
I also think that the mikg rom runs a script during flash that wipes the system. Kind of aamikiam's way of taking the end user mistakes out of the equation I guess...
I am on amon ra 2.3. What are the benefits of updating to the newer(4.1?) recovery?
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
I am like you and am using an older version of Amon ra. I thought about updating to the newer version but since everything works great the way it is I decided to leave well enough alone. What I have does what I want without any problems.
Doc
If you search the development thread, you will find the changelog for ra recovery...I don't remember all of the additions, but the changelog will fill you in and you can decide from there if it is worth staying with something that works, or have something else that works with more options.
i was the same way and thought i would change phones before i needed a recovery different from Amon_ra 2.3. I did make the switch to smelkus and it is very very good. The batch wipes alone are worth the change.
Give it a try, it's not like you can't change back...
The automatic rebooting after backups is nice.
To change to the new amon ra recovery do I just place the new .img file in the root directory and then go to the bootloader to update right?

Easier way is to download the PC36IMG.zip off of smelkus's thread then boot into bootloader, it will read it like it does an ruu and then you hit the volume up button to install. Thats it
Edit: to save you some time, here is the zip from Smelkus's thread, remember to rename the file to PC36IMG
Love Smelkus version. No problems so far.

There's a lot to be said for how trick TWRP is, but...
The second I booted into this I remembered how great AR backups are. Simple, smart, easy on the eyes, easy to use... and yes, I agree, the WIPE menu in this version is so excellent that alone makes it worthwhile.
It would be perfect if the settings ("x"s) in NAND BACKUP held from one backup to the next.
Great work, highly recommended!!
