maps and other apps keep launching in the background?!

Im puzzled why maps and other apps keep autostarting in the background?
and eat battery... maps alone can eat up to 10% of my battery in the duration of a day, even if I dont use it...

Get a task killer app and set it to always kill maps, and set a schedule for pruning (like every 30 mins). It's not supposed to start by itself. If you haven't rooted/flashed a custom ROM on it, call HTC. If you have, unroot and go back to stock for a day and see if the problem persists. If it doesn't, it's the ROM's fault.

its not rooted, so if I understand you correctly its a bug?

Either a software bug or an application issue. Have you reset to factory settings (full wipe)?

Okay, serious answer. All data on the phone, but not SD card too (on the off chance that something goes wrong, just copy/paste everything on your SD card to your PC, so you can restore)

Don't think it touches software version, but it might. I suggest you backup either with MyBackup (30 day free trial) or TitaniumBackup first.

i have the same issue, everytime i check my task manager i see apps like maps launched even though i never use them, sucks more battery for no reason, i hope froyo sheds some light

Please check one of the many battery/task manager threads. Cached applications don't use anything if they aren't somehow active. Also you could have lots of applications open at startup which must initialize something or cache themselves.
I also have maps and many other launched at startup, and my battery life is more than good.

well its claimed that they dont use any ressources.... but the reality is that something like maps eat 10% of my battery in the course of a day even if i dont use it...
if i regularely kill off unused tasks I have plenty of battery for a whole day including wifi
but if I dont Im down to the wire..
apps like maps, gallery etc. alll runs on bootup, and maps at least restarts every ... minutes..

That aside, I do share your frustrations regarding the energy applications waste. If you go on to the Marketplace (market) and search for the application task killer, you should find an application enabling you to close down applications you do not need on a regular basis. Task killers, full wipes, uninstallation...
...People could you calm down?
OP, could you check you don't have Latitude enabled in your Maps app? I found this too and it was because I set Maps to report my location. If it's not thats a good start. Now go to your settings and select Location. If you want turn off the use of wireless for location acquiring.
Ensure you're not using any widgets that need mapping data, or the Maps live wallpaper (that's a REAL juice hog)
You'll find a service running called FriendsAppWidget or such. Not sure what it does, but it's the only Map service I know that runs as long as the phone is on. You can kill it if you want, but I'm getting about 16 hrs use with it running all this time and no task killers.

From some searching is seems quite a few 3rd party apps plug into this service. Foursquare, Buzz, Twitter etc... Also , run maps and turn off any location aware features you may have enabled in the Labs section.
Basically seek out any apps you use that are dependant on getting your location to work. Even your weather widget might be the culprit.

Menu > Add > Shortcuts > Settings > Battery Use. Charge it to full, use it til it's running out of battery, then open Battery Use and tell us if there are any apps that you didn't open once (like maps) that use, say, 10% of your battery.
Sounds to me like they're just background services (which consume 0 resources)

well maps for sure, it seems its the single most powersucking app...
when Im down to orange/red on the battery from full charge its rated at 7-10%

Are you using Foursquare/Facebook/Twitter/geotagging photos & snapping a lot of them/etc? All of those use Maps, to a certain extent. If not, and you're on a stock ROM, call HTC and *****.

I do use geotagging and some facebook, but that ... in my opinion does not excuse maps not quitting after its done what it has to do...

I am trying to prevent certain apps from automatically starting up without me requesting them to. For example, Shopkick, Amazon App Store, Pulse, to name a few. Can someone help me with this? I still want to use these I just don't want them running all the time (Shopkick esp since they activate the mic and record certain words/patterns to market to you).

Get the app called Autostarts and selectr the ones you want to stop.

Easiest way to prevent this is to Back out of programs or use the exit button. If the app stil does't behave, notify the creator. All Android programs should permanently close if you use those methods.

That's not the issue, the big issue is them starting when I don't request it to start (i.i. Amazon App Store starts at random)

Use any of the myriad of start-up process editor apps or freeze unwanted apps/services with Titanium backup.

Yes, it means sometime you didn't close it out properly. I've never had Amazon App store reopen because I always close it out right.

At startup they load a piece into memory. If you check with Advanced Task Killer for Froyo you can see how many apps load into memory at bootup. If you load the task manager and clear memory you will see it closing apps that you had no idea were running. Amazon App store is one of them, Qik, Tango, Google Nav loads Maps, Telenav loads a similiar process.

LBE Safeguard,......you can shut em down, and bring em back when you want to use them.

No, it doesn't on an HTC Droid Incredible. I have a problem where Music Beta (the Android app which supports Google Music Beta) autostarts whenever it senses a BT audio connection that isn't being used, sometimes right over other apps which *are* streaming BT.
I was looking for an app that would prevent it from automatically starting up, but Autostarts couldn't even see that event as a triggering event for the app. (And, no, it's not a function of the "headset" setting on the app.)
I am still searching for the app that will do that.

Isn't there a bluetooth function in Autostarts? I know there are a ton of settings. If not just get bloat freezer or paid Titanium and freeze it until you actually want to use it. If I use Pandora with my Bluetooth, the next time I use the Bluetooth a piece of Pandora is loaded into memory. If I freeze it for a connection or two it doesn't do it again.

I seem to recall that there are many self-starting apps. Things that want to collect data or monitor usage. I saw these when using one of the autostart apps to kill these. There were several apps that came up as self starters. Meaning that as many times as the autostart program would kill them, they would automatically restart themselves. Its true.

I am using a Samsung Galaxy S2 for T-Mobile and I have the same issue.
I am using a start up cleaner app, start up manager, 1tap cleaner, TaskManager, Super Tool as well as My Data Manager apps to monitor my Phone. The data manager is showing me apps that are using my DATA when I don't want them running. Aside from uninstalling some apps, Some I can't, what can I do? I don't want them running unless I turn them on myself. My task Manager app shows me apps I never use that are running, such as, Social Hub,CK Zombies-a game I rarely use, My Account, Voice Command,Books, Maps and a few others.
Is what I want to do, run only what I want to run and not everything else, possible?

I've used Gemini App Manager to do this. Launch Under Menu->Settings->Expert Mode, click on the Filter. Go down to "Can Auto Run", and see what can auto-start. You can also filter by "Is Running" to see what is running now.
In Gemini, click on an app, and go down to "Config Autorun (root)". There you will see a list of when the app may autorun, and you can adjust accordingly.

Ok, I'll check this out...I failed to mention, I don't have my phone Rooted...yet...Not sure if I plan on it yet either. But will this work on a non-Rooted Phone?

Unfortunately, you need root access to be able to modify that about a program. That's the reason for the "Config Autorun (root)".

Task manager/running services

Ok most of us other than the few lucky ones are having high android os battery usage. Back to my HTC Hero days I never used a task manager and I know they are bad and all that. But what is the difference between the task manager on the phone when u kill the 1, 2 whatever apps are running like internet you always have to kill it in the task manager, but whats the difference between that and the running services? I have been using that for over a yr now with my Evo, Evo 3D, and now this. In the task manager nothing is going but I go into running services and Facebook, media hub, others like that are always running and I always force close. I know the voicemail, maps, and a few others is always running but on other phones I have never seen system updates running and each time I close it, it starts right back up Could there be something along those lines causing the high android os usage.

[Q] What's the deal with Google Maps services running all the time?

Epic 4G Touch (GB 2.3.6.) I've rooted it and dumped all the bloat like Social Hub, Media Hub and such.
Yesterday, in "Running Services" I had the basics plus Email (I assume that's needed for grabbing SMS?), Swype, and such.
After 7 hrs of light/average use (4G on and off a few times, dloaded an app, BT on and off a few times, 15 mins of gaming, etc), my battery was at 87%. That was roughly my pattern for the last few days- great battery life for this device, I think.
Then yesterday afternoon, I played with Google Maps, turning GPS on and off, opening and closing the "Traffic" widget (do people actually use that??), etc, then shutting it all down, turning off location, etc.
I then see Google Maps has three processes running:
"NetworkInitiatedService"
"NetworkLocationService"
"FriendsAppWidgetUpdate"
that can't be shut down (when you do, they pop back up a moment later). I left it alone, though, figuring it was filling its cache or whatever- I don't get too worked up about apps doing their thing if they can do it then shut down.
So today, after charging it last night, those processes are still running and my battery is now at 88% after three hours. Google Maps seems to be killing my battery for no apparent benefit- I have no widget running that uses it, either (I have the Accuweather widget running, but it's not set to use current location).
I guess my questions are:
Is this normal- does everyone else see this behavior? Is there any way to shut Maps down that I can't find?

GPS has been off the whole time (except as noted above), I'm not signed in to Latitude (never have been), and Settings --> Location and Security --> Use wireless networks and use GPS satellites are both unchecked.

Guess time: Do you have Location services enabled? That might be the issue. Disable them and see if this goes away.

That's the first thing I thought of, but
Settings --> Location and Security --> "Use wireless networks" and "Use GPS satellites"
are both unchecked and always have been.
Is there another place I should be looking?

Is it cached or running in the foreground?

Erm, Google Maps is 'closed' (or at least I back out of it every time- I assume that 'closes' it), and in Cache Settings, Automatic Caching is set to "Wi-Fi Only".

Update:
I just went in to:
Settings --> Applications --> Manage Applications
And hit "Clear Data" on the Maps app and it stopped all the services running.
Happy, but I didn't expect that. In fact, I might have expected the opposite.
Why would clearing its data stop it from running??

Also, it only shuts them down when you "Clear Data" from the system settings, not from Titanium Backup.

Open Google Maps again and see if those services get started back up. They do on my phone (LocationFriendService and MapsBackgroundService)

Autostarts!

That's why I always delete it and grab it from Market when I need it. Google+ does too I believe

what works best for me is titanium backup pro....(only pro version) i personally dont like to keep uninstalling apps so with pro you can keep the apps that run all the time and than just freeze them and than they wont run any more and when you need them you just go back to titanium and defrost them !!!!!!!

Freezing is definitely a great alternative to uninstalling. I just use those apps so little that I figure uninstall. JRummy's Ultimate Backup is great too. It is also a feature in ROM Toolbox Pro if you long press on an app in App Manager. You can freeze there as well

My G3 (D855) keeps hanging up and generally being slow if I don't restart it every single day. Problem is, I don't even have that many apps installed on it. How can I fix this issue? Please help me out! Just in case it helps, here are the apps I have installed on my phone (All other stock apps I have disabled) (My phone is stock, Unrooted)

First thing that stands out is Flightradar24. Next is Infinite Flight. Both are GPS hogs. Do you have location set to GPS precise? Are these apps constantly running?

Hi! I quit both these apps right after I finish with them. Plus, Infinite flight does not use GPS. (It's a flight sim game). And I turn off my GPS after using these apps.

Use process of elimination. Remove downloaded apps. See if p is slow. If not slow reinstall one app. Run app. If app makes phone slow, you found the offending app. If not slow, reinstall one other app. Run app. Get the point? It's a lengthy process, but is required to find which app(s) cause(es) the phone to slow and hang.
